3 Dear Friends, It s a great pleasure to send you our 2017 brochure and we very much hope that you will be tempted by some of the great locations and beautiful cottages we have to offer. Our biggest news is that Auchenvhin at Rockcliffe will be available from spring. It s one of the Trust s finest smaller houses, in a breathtaking location overlooking Rough Island in the Solway Firth. The extensive grounds drop down to the water s edge and the views to the west are stunning. The house sleeps up to 10 guests in five bedrooms, one of which is on the ground floor with an accessible bathroom. The kitchen has a large dining table and an Aga, and there is also a formal dining room that doubles as a games room. Those who wish to be quieter can retire to the sitting room and enjoy the open fire. There really is something for everyone in this perfect location. Following extensive refurbishment, the cottages at Balmacara got the thumbs up from our customers in East Cottage at Hill of Tarvit, finished in July 2016, also had a great season. Hill of Tarvit has been a popular choice for guests travelling with other families and friends as we now have three cottages and a flat in the main house, allowing parties to spend time together whilst having their own space too. Short breaks are very popular over the winter and at our larger properties throughout the year many of our guests are keen to take several holidays a year and we are just delighted to help! We wish you all the very best for The Holidays team The National Trust for Scotland For bookings call or visit 1

17 FALKLAND PALACE With stories that include a murderous duke, an imprisoned king, several changes of ownership and some of Mary, Queen of Scots happiest days, Falkland Palace is a treasure trove of history, brought to life by exquisitely restored display rooms. The current palace was built between c1450 and 1541, and served as the hunting residence of the Stuart kings and queens. The tapestry corridor containing 17th-century Flemish masterpieces is unmissable, as are the gardens which contain the oldest real (or royal) tennis court in Britain, built for James V. ABOUT THE AREA History runs deep in the village of Falkland, a former royal burgh inhabited since the mid-12th century. The Falkland hunting estate was given to Duncan Macduff, 6th Earl of Fife in 1160 and served as a base for royalty and aristocracy right up until the 20th century. Falkland also found fortune as a weaving town, and in 1792 an estimated third of the village s population were weavers. Cobbled wynds, an old horse market and many listed buildings all add to the village s historical charm. There are restaurants and traditional pubs in the village, as well as a small supermarket with a post office. THINGS TO DO Some of the best examples of the Trust s conservatation work can be seen in the palace. Talk to our guides about the recently restored carvings, paintings and stained glass. Scale the summit of East Lomond, a 434m hill looming over the village. For the brave, its wooded slopes also have a series of downhill mountain biking tracks. Soak up Edwardian elegance at Hill of Tarvit (NTS). A classic mansion house remodelled in 1906, there are upstairs and downstairs rooms to explore as well as a rose and kitchen garden. 22 LAMB S HOUSE PROPERTY 10 THE PAVILION 6 Lamb s House, a 5-storey A-listed building in the heart of Leith, is one of Edinburgh s most interesting buildings and is just a stone s throw from the historic port of Leith. Built around 1610, it is thought to have been the home for a merchant and his family. There were once booths on the ground floor that were used to trade the goods that had been brought up from the pier on the Shore. The top floor housed a warehouse for good quality produce. ABOUT THE AREA Leith sits to the north of Edinburgh on the shore of the Firth of Forth and has served as the city s port for hundreds of years. It was once a hub of manufacturing and commercial activity, including whaling, shipbuilding and Scotland s largest leadworks. 23 GUNSGREEN HOUSE Gunsgreen House was designed by John Adam, the older brother of Robert, as a lavish smuggling palace for the notorious Nisbet brothers. Special requirements included cellars that led directly to the sea, and a tea chute running through the house where the leaves from smuggled tea were kept dry. Gunsgreen s ground and lower ground floors now house a museum. The property is under the ownership of the Gunsgreen House Trust. ABOUT THE AREA Eyemouth lies in the estuary of Eye Water, a natural harbour with pristine sandy beaches, 8 miles north of the Scotland/England border. The garden s texture, fragrance and colour change throughout the year, making it a place to return to again and again. ABOUT THE AREA Melrose s history dates back to the Bronze Age. 85 PROPERTY 61 THE PEND SILVER 4 PROPERTY 62 THE PRECINCT HOUSE SILVER 3 History is built into the walls of this 16th-century lime-washed gatehouse to the Priory. A magnificent dark wood four-poster bed rests at the centre of its master bedroom, 17th-century windows open out onto the street, and a smoking peat fire warms the lounge. The Priory next door once housed the relics of St Ninian, a local missionary, bishop and mystic healer who died, according to tradition, around AD 431. Two centuries younger than its neighbour The Pend, Precinct House dates back to a time when Whithorn s medieval streets were being refashioned in the Scottish Georgian vernacular style. The house is made up of two buildings joined together by a glass atrium, perfect for sunny indoor dining. The name refers to an early monastic precinct, which was divided up to make the gardens of later houses. Period fire grates, Georgian furniture and a magnificent four-poster bed create a faithful reconstruction of the house as it originally stood. 2 storeys Sleeps 4 1 double and 1 twin bedroom with 6ft box-beds Large sitting/dining room with working fireplace (bag of fuel provided) Kitchen Family TV room Bathroom with bath and hand-held shower attachment Underfloor oil-fired central heating Internet access in adjacent Visitor Centre Small paved courtyard with garden furniture and barbecue Off-road parking is available 7 Jan 1 Apr Apr 24 Jun Jun 2 Sep Sep 28 Oct Oct 16 Dec 350 Christmas/New Year 655 Short breaks (Nov Mar) Midweek (Mon Fri) 235 Weekend (Fri Mon) 290 This property is privately owned. THINGS TO DO The Galloway Forest Park is home to the UK s first Dark Sky Park, a hotspot for stargazing, due to its pitch-black, non-light-polluted skies. Whithorn is a 10- to 15-minute drive away. Follow in the footsteps of Robert the Bruce, King James IV, Mary, Queen of Scots and a long line of royal visitors who travelled to the now-ruined 12th-century monastery that housed the relics of St Ninian. Visit the salty seaport at the Isle of Whithorn and watch the scallop boats coming home in the evenings, while relaxing at the quayside pub. The 1973 cult film The Wicker Man was filmed in this vicinity. GETTING THERE Faldarroch Farm is 2 miles from Port William and 6 miles from Wigtown. This beautifully preserved Victorian farm cottage forms the centrepiece among outbuildings, a byre, steading and calf shed. The open-plan kitchen is warmed by an original working range; a Victorian iron four-poster bed lies at the centre of the master bedroom; and outdoors, red squirrels abound. The property has a large garden with a stream running through, and a large wildlife pond is located in the gated paddock. Families will need to supervise young children. Faldarroch is also now part of the Walkers and Cyclists Welcome Schemes and has a drying room for wet clothes and storage for bikes, outdoor boots and clothing. 87 BROUGHTON HOUSE PROPERTY 64 BLUE DOOR SILVER 7 At the heart of Kirkcudbright stands the peachy-pink 18th-century Broughton House & Garden, home to Glasgow Boy artist E A Hornel from 1901 to As well as Hornel s Japanese-influenced paintings, the museum houses a major Robert Burns collection. The enchanting garden is truly one of Kirkcudbright s hidden gems. ABOUT THE AREA Dorothy L Sayers once said that In Kirkcudbright one either fishes or paints and there is still plenty of scope to enjoy both. The royal burgh, established in 1455, lies on an estuary of the River Dee. Fresh fish is available Tuesday to Saturday from the fresh fish shop just off the Harbour Square. The town is filled with galleries and shops showcasing local works. Close by, Dhoon s sandy beach is a lovely place for children to paddle. THINGS TO DO Don t miss a visit to Broughton House a fabulous time capsule of the Edwardian art scene. Rockcliffe (NTS) is just over 20 miles away. Here you will find a swathe of pebbled coastline, a bird sanctuary and the Mote of Mark, the ruined trading post of a Dark Age chieftain. A visit to nearby Threave Garden (NTS) will keep you busy for the whole day. The Scottish Baronial house has its own sculpture garden and nature reserve, a hotspot for bats. GETTING THERE Kirkcudbright is located off the A711 and A755. Dumfries is 28 miles away and Castle Douglas 9 miles. Beamed ceilings and pale walls set off this cosy artists retreat, which stands on the cobbled wynd where stained-glass artist E A Taylor and his wife, illustrator Jessie M King, used to live. Kirkcudbright is known as The Artists Town, having hosted generations of painters, craft makers and artisans a culture that still thrives today. 88 Lighthouse Accommodation The National Trust for Scotland is delighted to offer lighthouse accommodation at North Ronaldsay (the most northerly of the Orkney islands) and also at Covesea, near Lossiemouth on the Moray coast. The properties are ex-lighthouse keepers homes and have been fully refurbished to provide all modern conveniences inside. 86 The National Trust for Scotland Holiday Accommodation 2017 Lighthouse Accommodation

89 NORTH RONALDSAY S LIGHTHOUSES PROPERTY 65/66 NORTH RONALDSAY LIGHTHOUSE KEEPERS COTTAGES 1 & 2 4 After a tragic shipwreck in 1740, North Ronaldsay was given one of the first four lighthouses in Scotland. The original Old Beacon was built and first lit in 1789, and shone until 1809 when it was considered redundant. After some years it was again decided that the island s perilous rocks did necessitate their own lighthouse. In 1852 Alan Stevenson recommended builder William Kinghorn of Leith to the Lighthouse Commissioners and the soaring red brick tower you see today was erected, the tallest land-based lighthouse in the British Isles. ABOUT THE AREA Further north than the southern tip of Norway, North Ronaldsay s remoteness has helped to preserve its traditional ways of life. Common grazing on the seashore is still the custom and the local lambs feed off seaweed, giving their meat a rare flavour highly prized by chefs. The vibrant local community (who made possible the restoration of the Stevenson lighthouse, cottages and mill) make guests extremely welcome and should your visit coincide with one of the many concerts, dances and social gatherings that take place here, it is not to be missed. Bird-watching tours, island tours and trips up the lighthouse can also be arranged. THINGS TO DO Just 20 metres away from the cottages, the Lighthouse Keeper s Office is a great place to learn about North Ronaldsay s maritime history. Dine out at the bird observatory and join in with the bird log that takes place every night. You might spot arctic terns, red-throated divers, red-backed shrikes and rosefinches. Felted and knitted crafts are available from the island s mill, where wool from the local sheep is processed. GETTING THERE Ferocious seas and windswept headlands give these remote lighthouse keepers cottages their wonderful romantic feel. It s easy to imagine the shipwrecks, treasure troves, rescues and skilful seamanship of Robert Louis Stevenson s tales while on North Ronaldsay. Indeed, the lighthouse adjacent to the cottages was designed by his uncle, Alan Stevenson, and opened in Inside the cottages you will find a warm welcome with an open fire. They are all on one level and designed to be comfortable and accessible for less mobile visitors. A 15-minute flight three times a day from Kirkwall is operated by Loganair or a 3-hour ferry trip (also from Kirkwall) is operated by Orkney Ferries. The ferry runs on a Friday, and therefore both properties are available Friday to Friday, although short breaks in the winter will be flexible on arrival and departure days. Please note that, during the winter months, guests are advised to fly to the island instead of sailing as sailings can be disrupted. Food orders can be taken (please give us two weeks notice) and will be delivered to your fridge for your arrival. This could include local lamb as well as general groceries. 90 COVESEA Following the loss of 16 ships during a storm in the Moray Firth in November 1826, many applications were made for lighthouses to be established at Tarbat Ness (near Portmahomack on the Dornoch Firth) and Covesea Skerries to mark the wide entrance to the firth and its confusing series of inlets. Following a lengthy process, approval was finally received for the building of the lighthouse on Craighead and a beacon on the dangerous Halliman s Scars. Robert Louis Stevenson s uncle, Alan, designed the new Covesea Skerries lighthouse and beacon. The iron beacon was completed in 1845 and the lighthouse followed in Egyptian influences can be seen in the entrance to the tower, the chimneys of the cottages and the arches at the top of the lighthouse tower beneath the balcony. The lighthouse once worked by a clockwork mechanism that turned the lenses, and the keepers had to climb to the top and raise the weights. It was manned until 1984, when automation meant that the keepers were no longer required as the switching on and off of the lamp could be done remotely. With the advent of new technology, the addition of a north cardinal buoy next to the Halliman Skerries allowed the lamp to be switched off in Covesea is located just opposite the Halliman Skerries, a reef of rocks that are covered at high tide. The lighthouse and cottages were purchased in 2013 by the Covesea Lighthouse Community Company Limited. ABOUT THE AREA Visitors can enjoy two superb nearby beaches. One of these, West Bay, stretches for 3 miles to the west beyond the headland housing Covesea Lighthouse. The coastal town of Lossiemouth is just over a mile away to the east and can be reached by walking along the lovely beach. It offers the visitor a range of facilities including sea angling, two 18-hole golf courses, an excellent range of shopping, and quality restaurants and cafés, all making the most of the plentiful supply of fresh seafood. The Silver Sands Holiday Park is just 5 minutes walk from the lighthouse and here you will find a play area for children, shop, café and bar. THINGS TO DO Spend a day at the Scottish Dolphin Centre at Spey Bay for some land-based dolphin watching. The largest bottlenose dolphins in the world have been seen here. There are over 50 whisky distilleries in the nearby area, with the Glen Moray distillery in Elgin offering a tour and a tasting. There are numerous buildings of historic interest and architectural beauty in the area, surrounded by breathtaking scenery and exhilarating walks. Brodie Castle (NTS) is just half an hour s drive away. GETTING THERE Covesea is 1 mile from Lossiemouth, on the A941 from Elgin (7 miles). 88 The National Trust for Scotland Holiday Accommodation 2017 Lighthouse Accommodation
