DG LARRY S NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2017 The official handover from DG Malcolm Baldwin was an informal affair on board the Lake Windermere steamer MV Tern on Sunday 25 June. A total of 89 Rotarians, members of Inner Wheel and guests joined us for a 2 hour cruise and buffet in sunny, but breezy weather, entertained by the High Society Jazz Band. Following a short handover speech, DG Malcolm handed over the chain of office and was subsequently presented with his Past District Governor jewel. Incoming Secretary. Linda Lambson and incoming Treasurer Arthur Jones both from the Rotary Club of Carnforth were presented with their jewels of office. Due to annual work commitments at East of England showground in Peterborough, I am unable to commence my club visit programme until Monday 21 st August when the first visit will be at lunchtime to Kendal. Thereafter I will be out most nights and in some cases visiting two clubs per day. During my club visits, it is my intention to give clubs a brief overview of the latest news and initiatives from RI, RIBI and District. Thereafter, I am particularly keen for clubs to give me an informal update of their club activities, membership recruitment and any issues that they want to discuss. The link to my events diary is which is also posted on the District website. I was unable to attend Whitehaven s Charter in early July, where the District was represented by DGE, Mary Bradley. I attended Furness Rotary Club s 26 th Charter at the Lisdoonie Hotel in Barrow-in-Furness on Friday 21 st July and would like to extend my thanks to President Gordon Turner and his team. It is up to every one of us in District 1190 to ensure that we as Rotarians make a difference! We need to actively reinvigorate our clubs and strive to ensure that our clubs represent the diverse nature of the local community, and are attractive to new members. The District team is here to support and strengthen clubs. In early June we ran a Public Image and Web Design course. On 19 th August I have arranged for Chris Sweeney from the Rotary Club of Conwy to run a workshop at Garstang in the use of the RIBI Club web template which he designed. We will be running two workshops on Social Media at venues in the northern and southern parts of the District early in the new calendar year. It is essential that Rotary Clubs in the District use every means possible to inform their communities about the project work they undertake both locally and internationally. One very effective method is via the newly revamped Rotary Club Central (RCC) and the Rotary Showcase where clubs can input project goals. Clubs will have a record of what they have achieved over the Rotary year, and can track progress on money raised and man hours spent on each project.
The Presidential Citations will be awarded automatically if each of the required goals is achieved and entered onto RCC. Instruction on how to use RCC can be given on an individual basis via telephone and web link District Conference: Preparations continue to go well with the new format one-day Conference at the North Lakes Hotel, Penrith on Saturday 17 th March. Registration for the Conference is 25, which includes bacon butties on arrival, mid-morning tea/coffee and a buffet lunch. Delegates are encouraged to stay overnight. On Friday evening we have arranged a Cumbrian themed dinner and to celebrate St Patrick s Day on the Saturday evening we will have an Irish themed dinner with dancing to the all-girl vocal trio, the BlueBirds. Conference Secretary, Mary Bradley has negotiated the special rate of 125 per room per night (based on two people sharing) inclusive of bed, breakfast and the themed dinner. This rate is only available until 30 September, so if you intend to stay overnight, book your room direct (Tel: ) with the North Lakes Hotel - NOW! Please quote Rotary when booking! For those who just want to come for the dinner, the cost is 30 per head for dinner on each night.
Launch of Rotary 2: RIBI President Denis Spiller recently sent a letter to every Club President announcing the launch of Rotary 2 where us reiterated that our number one service goal, is the eradication of polio. This year we hope to see the final case ever of wild polio, although immunisation must continue for 3-5 years, so it is essential that we keep supporting the Purple for Polio campaign. Our number one operational priority is to grow our membership. The latest growth initiative seeks to form 250 brand new Rotary groups across Great Britain and Ireland, This programme will generate opportunities for like-minded adults and People of Action to join one of many new and flexible Rotary groups. These groups will meet and deliver Rotary in a less traditional style and in line with lifestyles we know have changed over the past decade. Many of you are already in such a club and many other clubs will follow suit. RI Presidents Peace Building Conference: RI President Ian Riseley has requested that a Peacebuilding Conference be held in the UK. This will take place at the Ricoh Arena, Judds Lane, Longford, Coventry, CV6 6AQ Coventry on Saturday 24 th February 2018 and will be the first time that we have had a Presidential Conference in England. The Conference will start at 9.30 on 24 th and speakers already booked are President Ian Riseley, Lord Mayor of Coventry Councillor Tony Skipper and Professor Joseph Valadez who is chair of international public health at the Liverpool school of tropical medicine and Prof Mike Hardy from Cov University. Arrival and refreshments from 09:00am; sessions start at 09:30am and will finish at approximately 17:30pm the same day. Registration Package includes Teas/coffee & pastries on arrival, buffet lunch, teas/coffee during breaks. Wi- Fi and car parking. Should you wish to book accommodation Rooms have been reserved at the onsite Double Tree by Hilton Hotel at the following rates single and double occupancy, including full English breakfast/vat. Four breakout sessions will be held these will centre on discussions following the speakers on Disease Prevention and Treatment, and Peace. The day will conclude with a RI President s Peacebuilding Dinner. In today s world peace is not just about warring countries but also at home, Pre-teens are carrying out gangland executions, latest is the use of acid which causes torture without having to get too close. 13 year olds use the number of times they ve been stabbed as a trophy. Self-harm and suicide are the main killers of young people across the world, in the UK, 17 people commit suicide every day. The young people attending will have their own breakout sessions taken by young people from Peace Advocates and PeaceJam, these will be led by Jean Best and Caroline Millman.
Tree Planting Challenge: RI President 2017/8 Riseley has challenged every Rotarian throughout the world to plant a tree between 1 st July 2017 and 22 April 2018 (World Earth Day). If successful, that would mean 1,200,000 new trees being planted to reduce the world s carbon emissions. There are several schemes currently on offer, or clubs can choose their own project. Amanda O Garrow (aogarrow1965@gmail.com) from Carnforth Rotary Club has been appointed the Tree Planting Liaison Officer for District Club Presidents are requested to notify Amanda of their chosen tree planting project, location and the quantity of trees planted. RIBI, through the generosity of the Rodney Huggins Family Trust a special one-off award of 250 is being offered to the Club who best carries out this task. There will also be a trophy, as the original Rodney Huggins Award Trophy, thought to be lost and then replaced, has suddenly appeared! Entries for the competition should be sent to Terry Knowles on TERUNA2@aol.com by 30 April 2018 including:- a) Photographic evidence of the tree planting. b) Their location c) The number and ages of the people involved d) The types of tree planted e) The size of trees planted f) The number of trees planted g) The date(s) when the planting was done Other criteria taken into consideration is the originality of any tree planting scheme carried out. GUIDE TO PLANTING AND WHAT TO PLANT This falls into three main categories: 1/ Planting at home 2/ Donating money for planting by others on a site in the U.K. 3/ Donating money for planting abroad. PLANTING AT HOME This can be anything from an individual planting a tree in their own garden such as a fruit tree, to the Club arranging through their Local Authority Parks Department to plant in a woodland or park in their own area. Of course you can always plant more than one tree per Rotarian! It also opens up the possibility of involving others to help, especially young people. If your Club does not have enough able people to dig holes, there may be a local organisation, perhaps involving disabled, who are more than willing to help. Do not forget to get permission from the Council if planting on their land, and also Risk Assessment if involving members of the public, especially children. Our insurance should cover most things but refer to them if at all in doubt. Local Environment Groups often look after areas where trees are much needed. You can source your trees locally but the Woodland Trust offer FREE trees through their community scheme. These vary from packs 30 to 420 trees with spirals and canes. There are certain criteria which have to be met so please have a look at their web site. Orders for November planting have to be in no later than the first week of September and for March by the first week in January, but the earlier you order the better as
stock can run out at any time. Details are available on Donations towards the cost of these trees will be welcomed by the Trust. For sites where trees need more protection, a limited number of packs of 45 trees for 60 (though they cost 150) are available and come with stakes and JT2 tubes, but these will only be on sale from October through the Woodland Trust Shop About 300 packs will be available both to us and the general public on a first come basis. The Woodland Trust will let me know when orders can be taken, so please contact teruna2@aol.com if you are interested and as soon as they have been put on sale I can let you know. These trees come with a compost root ball, so they can be planted at any convenient time as long as they are kept watered and frost free. A wide variety of individual trees and packs are also available from single trees up to 420 in the shop with free delivery for orders over 50. There will be a special Rotary identification box on the order form which will enable us to see how many trees have been acquired and by which Clubs. You may wish to work together with other Clubs in your area when ordering trees giving greater flexibility and a wider selection of tree types, as often Tree Nurseries prefer to sell packs of 25 trees of each variety and for the Woodland Trust their special offer of 45 trees will contain 3 packs 15 trees giving a choice of three types. Money for Madagascar: For clubs looking to support an overseas tree planting project, Rotarian Amanda O Garrow with the support of Carnforth Rotary Club has an established contact with the charity Money for Madagascar (Charity Registration Number ). In support of this project, I have recently written and received support from the Rotary District 9220 Governor for a tree planting project in partnership with our District. Amanda has already received offers of support from 2 clubs in Madagascar. There is nowhere quite as extraordinary as Madagascar! It is an island bursting with life; home to a range of weird and wonderful plants and creatures: from the world s only lemur populations to tiny chameleons the size of your finger tip. 90% of the plants and animals found on the island are unique to Madagascar. New plant and animal species are being discovered all the time, including medicinal plants to treat conditions like cancer. Yet this rich biodiversity is under threat! Despite its natural wealth, Madagascar is economically poor. Extreme human poverty is putting enormous pressure on Madagascar s unique habitats, resulting in mass deforestation and the risk of extinction for thousands of species. What Can you do? Help replant the rainforest: This year the aim is to plant 10,000 new rainforest trees in deforested areas around Andasibe. 10 can pay for 20 rainforest trees to be replanted and looked after. Help offer an alternative to slash and burn agriculture: Planting fruit trees is one of the ways that families around the Betampona Rainforest Reserve can improve nutrition and income. 20 can pay for a family to plant and maintain 4 fruit trees. Offset your CARBON FOOTPRINT: The average person in the UK is responsible for releasing 10 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere each year. Planting trees in Madagascar is a simple and effective way to neutralise these emissions, protect vulnerable habitats and improve livelihoods. 100 can pay for the planting and aftercare of 200 indigenous trees; offsetting 10 tonnes of CO2.
