1 NEWS this issue YETTON TOGETHER - WINNERS OF EXAMINER COMMUNITY PROJECT AWARD 2016 SEE PAGE 2 ISSUE 15 SUMMER 2016 Library on the move! Kirkheaton library has moved! But panic not! It s only across the corridor in the community centre into what was the Community Room. The move has been necessary due to Kirklees withdrawing all funding for the library rent. This means that YT has had to maximise the space in the building to increase its revenue. Freeing up the larger space previously occupied by the library will allow existing classes to expand and encourage other users thus enabling YT to subsidise the library space. Otherwise the library would have had to close as has happened at Lepton. YT is determined to keep this important facility in the Your FREE MAGAZINE for Kirkheaton, Upper Heaton, Gawthorpe, Bog Green, Briggate, Houses Hill, Wellhouse & Lascelles Hall village and will do it upmost to ensure its long term future. We wish to thank KBPC for financially supporting YT in this aim. Visitors to the library over the past month will have noticed other changes. A new self-issuing machine has been installed and free Wi-Fi is now available. Sadly we had also to say goodbye at the end of April to Pam, our staff member, whose enthusiasm breathed new life into the library. (See Library Chatter p5) Due to Pam s departure volunteers have agreed to operate the library on Thursday and Friday on their own until September when the planned reduction in staffed hours comes into force.

The citation states: The two women, alongside a dedicated band of volunteers, have given Kirkheaton a real sense of cohesion and community They have saved the library and the community centre which now runs a massive range of activities. Bev commented It s amazing to win. We re very proud of how far we ve come. Well done and a huge thank you to all the volunteers who have played their part in winning the award. 50 artists make Kirkheaton s 10th Arts Festival a great success Nearly 800 people visited Kirkheaton s 10th Arts Festival over the May Bank Holiday weekend, 28th - 30th May, held in the parish church. We had a fantastic selection of work on show, from more than 50 artists says the Rector, the Revd Richard Steel, including a young girl from the village who was exhibiting photographs for the first time and some material from an artist who has been invited to America to show her unusual string sculptures. And we had so many children in over the weekend that the volunteer doing craft with them had to bring in extra stocks - and so many people overall that we almost ran out of cake! 2

3 KIRKHEATON SCOUTS & GUIDES & COMMUNITY GALA WEEKEND What a great success! The Kirkheaton Scouts & Guides, Yetton Together and the combined churches worked together to bring about a wonderful weekend of activities. On Saturday you could visit two beautiful open gardens at 22 (Eric Simpson) and 28 Lane Side (Sarah & Ray Brown). At 28 the smell of cooking sausages and beef burgers lingered in the air to draw you to the centre of a most wonderful garden - complete with summer house, swing, and children s games amongst trailing wisteria. At 22 you could enjoy outstanding views and enjoy cake and coffee. Saturday afternoon saw the United Reform Church hosting a tea party for the more senior of our community. They enjoyed traditional sandwiches, cream scones and even a birthday cake especially for her Majesty. Candles were blown out by two of the most senior both 99 years young. Flags were waved as everyone sang the old favourites Keith Durkin s rendition of Danny Boy brought tears to many an eye. In the evening people enjoyed the ceilidh hosted by St John s with a live band and hot beef sandwiches (sop supper). Sunday saw an early start with lots of hard work setting up the Gala Field, but when the parade arrived and the community entered the field it was all worthwhile. The parade led by Vic, the Town Crier, followed by the Gala Queen Millie arrived with Copyright markflynnphotography.com her three attendants, Melisa, Guide; Bella, Brownie; Ella, Rainbow in a vintage car kindly loaned by Cartwright s Cars. Crowning of the Gala Queen was by Wendy Gill, Assistant County Commissioner who was presented with a bouquet by two cubs. Yetty s Cafe inside the community centre was very busy and the library volunteers and staff helped children to do craft activities within the library. Even though the weather was not kind to us we believe that people really enjoyed the spirit of the Gala. They were entertained throughout the day by Huddersfield Crusaders Majorettes; Huddersfield Rock Choir and Grange Moor Brass Band. Thanks to Richard Tree, the volunteer DJ who kept the proceedings going. A big thank you to all the leaders, sponsors, volunteers and stallholders and a great big thank you to the Gala Committee for such a wonderful achievement and for the great support, as always, that our small village give to us. Death Cafe is an international movement aimed at helping break what it pretty much the last taboo subject these days, death. The idea is to provide an informal and easy atmosphere - which with the cakes and hot drinks provided by Yetty s it certainly was - and allow people to share thoughts and ask questions. And that s what people did. Several people shared very moving stories of tragedies from the past or how they were facing their own death, some with terminal diagnoses. And one of how he was planning to be buried in his own garden in a home-made coffin! Nothing was out of bounds. Although it was organised by the parish church and local undertaker s, Radcliffes, and staff from the hospice were there to answer questions, it was a completely open-ended and agendafree evening. The main thing was to get people talking, to realise how talking about death, what the future hold and what plans you might want to make, frees you to get more out of life. Kirkheaton s got talent! Local photographer Stephanie Carlin s work was showcased at the Dean Clough gallery last month at the Batley School of Art photographic exhibition. The talented student is studying for her BA (Hons) in Contemporary Photography and has already won the student category of the Yorkshire region competition run by the British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP) with her image Black Swan, inspired by the film of the same name. This image has been also been selected by the BIPP to appear in other exhibitions around the country. Stephanie, who was educated at King James s and lives in Kirkheaton, specialises mainly in cosmetic products and hair and beauty portrait photography. Besides completing her degree course she is currently working on a Disney inspired fashion photo book which will take at least two years to complete. 5 WI renamed At the beginning of the year Kirkheaton W.I. changed its name to THE CROFT HOUSE COOKIES W.I. Since moving to Croft House in Upper Hopton they have increased their membership threefold. This resulted in them being given an award by the West Yorkshire Federation of W.I.s at their Spring Conference for recruiting the most new members this year. Details of some of their forthcoming events can be seen in What s On p12. Library Chatter We are sorry to say Pam Kaur, our lively librarian has left the library service. Pam has been the king or should I say queen pin of Kirkheaton library for the last three years. During that time she has worked tirelessly with the volunteers to ensure the library remains in the village. Her enthusiasm and welcoming approach has greatly enhanced the number of people visiting the library at a time when other local libraries have seen a decline in visitors. She will be greatly missed by us all but we wish her well in her new job and she has promised to keep in touch. However on a positive note we welcome a number of new volunteers, the new selfissuing machine is now in use and free Wi-Fi is available. Laneside Landfill Site Update Landfill Updates: Awaiting planning decision by Kirklees in regard of extending time limit. Construction of landfill cell ongoing with a view to start domestic waste landfill later in the year. A habitat suitability index assessment was completed in May which involved the review of all ponds and an egg search for evidence of breeding great crested newts. An annual inspection/review of the site including an inspection of the hibernacula, existing woodland and grassland habitats is to be undertaken - to be completed in late summer/autumn Would you know what to do in an emergency? 6 COMMUNITY BANKFIELD LANE FOOTPATH At long last the footpath fronting the businesses and extending to Kirkheaton Engineering has now been resurfaced after complaints about the hazardous condition caused by excavations of utility works. Roundabout flower bed changes This year the bed in front of the surgery is a work in progress. In previous years we have been able to buy our bedding plants (over 1500) cheaply from Kirklees Nursery. Due to it no longer growing plants, we are having to re-think the space as it will be too expensive to bed out. The plan is to replant with some perennial plants and bushes and add seasonal colour with bulbs and a smaller number of bedding plants. Watch this space! 16 Westgate Honley, Holmfirth HD9 6AA The Lindens New Road, Kirkheaton HD5 0JB BELLSTRING LANE/ LILEY LANE ROAD IMPROVEMENTS The winter months saw an increase in accidents along Bellstring Lane and Liley Lane. Vehicles leaving the road caused damage to boundary walls and resulted in emergency services having to respond. Consultations between the highways agency, residents and Councillors prompted an investigation into the possible causes. It was identified that mud transfer from the quarry and landfill sites, the road surface itself and possible speeding may be factors in the sudden increase of accidents along this stretch of road. During April several measures were undertaken which included deep cleaning, partial resurfacing with extra white lining and studs, along with improved signage. Quarry owners do have wheel washing facilities which, if used correctly, are designed to limit mud transfer onto the roads. Hopefully the above measures will help all users to be aware of the potential hazards on these unlit roads and reduce accidents significantly. 7 UPDATES KIRKHEATON FUTURE MOVING FORWARD Permission was received from both KBPC and Kirklees Planning to produce the Neighbourhood Plan in March. On 21st April a meeting was held with the authorities to reach a Service Level Agreement, which is now in place. Step 2 of the Project Plan-Plan Preparation has been completed and work commenced in May on Step 3, which is to identify our community vision, prioritise issues and develop objectives. Two meetings were held at the community centre on the 1st and 2nd June for village feedback. A questionnaire was presented to KBPC at the beginning of June for approval and by the end of June the Group hope to be ready to draft the Plan (Step 4). During September the draft Plan will be assessed (Step 5) followed by consultation and publicity in October and November (Step 6). The aim is to submit the completed Neighbourhood Plan to the authorities for examination during December. The Yetton Together website will continue to provide ongoing information. 200 Club Help us to make it a truly 200 Club! Enclosed with the magazine is an application form for next season s 200 Club. It will start in September to bring it in line with all YT s other accounts so there will be no draws in July and August. The concept of the club is simple. You buy a numbered share (for 12 per year) which is put into a monthly draw with 3 chances to win. This gives the shareholder 36 chances of winning some money up to 50* per month over the year. Half the money raised is given back to shareholders in prizes and the rest is used to buy additional hanging baskets for the village. This year the cost has gone up considerably as we have had to find a new supplier. Each basket costs approximately 60 each (includes a watering contract) so we have had to reduce the number from 20 to 18 which will still cost over See more at: org/yetton-together-2/200-club/ * dependent on number of subscribers Coach Travel Services Free places for 2 year olds (subject to local authority criteria) Registered for Nursery Education Funding Quality childcare from 0-8 years Transport to School for Wakefield Girls High, Queen Elizabeth Grammar, Crossley Heath Grammar and Huddersfield Grammar. 9 now we have advocacy, clientcooked lunches, we cater events (including for the Kirkheaton WI), English classes, trips to the opera, play activities for children, fresh food to take home once a week, a monthly restaurant meal... the list is endless. Best of all, last year 21 of our clients got leave to remain. When someone gets the paper we have a cake with candles, a symbol of hope, and loan them money against when their benefits will come - the loan almost always comes back on the day the benefits arrive, which shows it s good to put your trust in people. The displays moved on into the 70 s and 80 s with the ZX80 then the ZX81 being the first domestic computers. The 90 s and Noughties saw the dramatic rise of the internet and mobile phone which have greatly impacted on all our lives. The exhibition also had a display from the Broadhead and Graves group displaying old photos of the mill and the terrible fire in 1964 when all the pattern books were lost. Dances were a favourite pastime at the mill and there were a number of group photos of young ladies having a good time. On the following Saturday the group organised a tour of the church graveyard. Participants were encouraged to walk around the graveyard using the guide provided, learning about the rich history and stories represented by the graves. 10

11 Rector moving to pastures new We are sad to report that Richard Steel, Rector of Kirkheaton and his wife, Jan, will be leaving Kirkheaton at the end of June. Richard has been appointed Mission Team Leader for the diocese of Lincoln and will lead a strategy for the development of church growth and evangelism there. I am very excited about this new role... but it will be very hard to leave, he says. There are so many lovely people in the churches and community who have become good friends. We feel we have learnt so much and will take a lot with us. During his eleven years in the parish Richard has been very active in the church and the wider community. He has led the parish church through a major redevelopment programme and helped establish many new initiatives such as the Christmas Tree and Arts Festivals, Community Bonfire and Fireworks and Christingle. In 2010 he led the development of the Kirkheaton Community Plan and became founder Chair of Yetton Together. He has also supported the development of a Community Association at Grange Moor and chaired the Laneside Landfill Liaison Group for a number of years. He comments We ve particularly appreciated working with the great group of people who have given so much time and energy to form Yetton Together, and all that is now happening because of this. Most recently he has become known, internationally, as the Vicar who gave 10 notes away when he used the story of the Parable of the Talents as one fundraising initiative. He will be greatly missed for his drive and initiatives which have enhanced life in the wider community as well as within the church. We will be very sad to see both Richard and Jan leave. Nevertheless we wish them well in their new venture. Our loss is Lincoln s gain as we are sure they will make their mark there as they have done here.
