1 NEWS ISSUE 8 SPRING 2014 Your FREE MAGAZINE for Kirkheaton, Upper Heaton, Gawthorpe, Bog Green, Briggate, Houses Hill, Wellhouse & Lascelles Hall Kirkheaton Church - open all hours (well, nearly!) this issue SPOTLIGHT ON... Raymond Berry - ex-butcher extraordinaire YT S YOUNGEST FUND RAISERS GUIDE BAKING CHAMPION & MUCH MORE! After six months of hard work, the largest development of the building since the 1830s is now finished. Visitors comments include how bright, open and welcoming it looks and how its heritage has been preserved while still creating a flexible contemporary space. Rector, the Revd Richard Steel commented We are absolutely delighted, as this is just what we set out to do. We have already welcomed Kirkheaton and Dalton schools, history researchers and other churches seeking inspiration for developing their own buildings, along with visitors to our first Christmas Tree Festival. We feel we are really living out our new Vision statement - Bringing God s love into the heart of the Community. He added From the small scale new Knit and Natter group on a Monday afternoon, to the Arts Festival in May, we want to see more people making the most of our excellent new facilities. And one of the best things? Being able to point people towards our toilets! One man told me he has not been able to come to church for years because of the fear caused by his medical condition. That is the kind of down to earth issue our work has sought to solve. Well over 700 people attended the Christmas Tree Festival where 33 local groups and businesses brought themed, decorated trees including Chippy Booth s ( real fish and chips) and Walker s garage (cars and tools) alongside nearly 40 from the pupils of Kirkheaton School. Holme Valley Singers and the school choir gave concerts. The festival was supported by Casey Pro-Environment, Flowers by Glen at Rockwood Garden Centre and Radcliffe Funeral Services. The church is open from 8 am - 4 pm most days. Go and have a look. Fresh tea and coffee always available. Longer versions of this and other articles can be viewed at yettontogether.org

Girls aged 5-18, had to complete a series of activities including designing and marketing their own chocolate bars, bread tasting, baking etc for a place in the local semi-finals. Emily Baker, Lauren Cargill and Imogen Cargill from Kirkheaton Guides baked their way to success winning the Huddersfield Ramsden Division semi-final in October. They then spent a fun-filled day at Shelley College in November alongside 134 other finalists competing to win the Great County Bake Off title in a spectacular finale. Imogen Cargill, from Kirkheaton Guides, won the year old category and badge design competition, I couldn t believe I d won! The atmosphere was incredible, it was really scary at first but then we got baking and it was so much fun. I made owl cupcakes for the technical challenge and a Lemon and Poppy seed sponge with mascarpone topping for the final showstopper. I really love guides because I get to do things like this and experience new opportunities whilst making new friends. Girlguiding offers girls and young women the chance to have fun, build friendships, gain valuable life skills and be themselves in a safe, girl-only space. The proposal to upgrade the PO and re locate it to Select and Save on Bankfield Lane has been shelved for the foreseeable future due to unforeseen circumstances. 2

3 Spotlight On... Raymond Berry, Master Butcher, President of North West Riding of Yorkshire Council of Butchers Association , producer, actor, chorister, dancer, drummer, major fund raiser, all-round good citizen. Born 1929 at grandma s house in Workhouse Lane (now Moorside Road), Raymond wasn t expected to survive his difficult birth, but his will to live brought him through this first of life s many challenges. His grandparents lived on a 10 acre farm with chickens, pigs and calves sounds an ideal childhood but there was much hard work for all. The horse and cart was used to cut the grass at the cricket field and to transport equipment to away matches. Raymond left school at 14 to work for his Uncle George at his butcher s shop in Grange Moor, earning 12s 6d (around 62p). He recalls towards the end of the war a Doodlebug (flying missile) exploded in the fields at the back of his uncle s shop. All the windows in Grange Moor were smashed and the hen house was reduced to matchsticks. It was a while before the surviving hens started to lay again! At 18 Raymond was called up for National Service and joined the Catering Corps. He served 18 months in Egypt at one point cooking for 125 men which was no easy task without gas or electric. He improvised with a petrol burner! In 1956 Raymond secured his butcher s shop in Kirkheaton. Today we talk about the provenance of food, but Raymond was doing this then sourcing his food from local farms. Uncle 3 George, in a reversal of roles, worked part time for him and he got a lot more than 12s 6d! commented Raymond. One day Raymond was taking some pigs to the slaughter house. Usually caged in the back of the van; one pig escaped and appeared on the passenger seat next to him. It did enjoy its last ride but it was particularly difficult to carry out the inevitable after that! Many know of Raymond s enthusiasm for anything theatrical. He produced and acted in the first pantomime at the United Reform Church in Dick Whittington. On one occasion whilst playing Wishee-Washee in Aladdin at Moldgreen, during his rendition of Happiness (Ken Dodd s hit) chuckles rapidly grew to hilarious laughter - Raymond was quite unaware his trousers were gradually falling down! As well as a producer and actor, Raymond has a good singing voice and has taken part in many light operatic productions such as The Student Prince and Rose Marie. He can also dance and play the drums. He recalls having lessons in drumming for 12 months at 15 per hour. When told that further sessions would cost 18 he said Forget it, I think I know enough now! Over the years, Raymond has raised thousands of pounds for many causes such as the building of Kirkheaton Scout and Guides Headquarters. In 2013 alone he raised over 6,700 in poppy sales a fantastic achievement. When asked would he change anything in his colourful life, he replied that he would have loved to have been a comedian. We think he could give Sir Bruce Forsyth a run for his money any day! Read the full version and more photos at yettontogether.org

The Festival takes place over the Bank Holiday weekend, 24th-26th May, 2-5 pm. In the past it has featured painting, photography, sculpture, quilts, sugarcraft, jewelry and embroidery, alongside work from Kirkwood Hospice and Kirkheaton school. There will be live music, a chance to hear and see bell ringing at first hand, and get quilting lessons, and more. And it s all completely free - including refreshments and creative activities for children. Some of the artworks are for sale, also cards and jewelry. The Yetton Rant Funfair will also be held from Friday, 23rd - Monday, 26th May. So come along and support them both. If you are interested in exhibiting please contact Claire in the Parish Office, , or call in to the church. Taxi office application A planning application is being considered by Kirklees Council to change the use of 5 Heaton Moor Road from a food takeaway [Pizza Verona] to a taxi office. The proposal is for a private hire office staffed by 2 people controlling up to 6 cars. Staff parking will be at the rear and parking for taxis will be on the forecourt. The application also asserts that vehicles will not be based at the premises on a permanent basis, nor will they be at the premises waiting for fares. Drivers will only visit the office to carry out administration tasks and collect wages etc. The Environment Officer reports due to the proximity of dwellings it is recommended that a temporary permission is granted for one year. Consultations have ended and a decision is due in Spring. 5 Laneside Landfill Site Update Newt mitigation is virtually complete and the company have now access to all areas of the site with more newt ponds to be built around the perimeter. Replanting of native species along the western boundary of the site ie nearest to Orchard Road, is to be undertaken in preparation for the construction of a bridle way and footpath as well as the diversion of the stream that cuts the site in half. Casey s have agreed in principle to Thursday s Healthy Walks group request for the development of permissive paths across the site. Non-hazardous waste [including domestic] landfill is scheduled to start 12 months after the commencement of the monitoring of the gases and ground water which has not yet begun. Library Chatter Thursday 6-7pm Informal family/local history group welcomes new members who can be given help in how to trace their ancestors. As this year is the centenary of the start of The Great War they are also hoping to investigate the role of Kirkheaton residents in the conflict so bring along any family memorabilia you have. Free access to the internet and various family history sites are available. Visit the library to find out more or contact Roger on or armitage@ rogerthomas336.orangehome.co.uk Thursdays 2 pm-4pm Knit & Natter, Craft n Chatter group meets. Come along to learn a craft or just to socialise Friday 2pm Toddlers story and craft sessions. Just turn up Plans are afoot to run a community coffee shop during some library opening hours starting in March. Coffee, teas and homemade cakes etc available. Please support it as any profits will help towards ensuring library and community facilities remain open. There is a meeting at the library for anyone interested in coffee shop volunteering on Tuesday 11th March at 7:30pm Spotlight On... We are sad to report that Elsie Armitage nee Oakes, who featured in Spotlight On... in our last issue, died in early January at the age of 91. 6 COMMUNITY P Take a break Thank you to Kirkburton Parish Council who at YT s request have placed a seat at Houses Hill so walkers can sit awhile and admire the view. KIRKHEATON ROADSIGN At last - we are soon to be on the map! For too long visitors have not known when they have entered the village but now at YT s request, Kirklees have agreed to erect a village sign at the mini roundabout at the bottom of School Lane. The sign should be in place during the near future. Apology - Due to circumstances beyond our control we were unable to decorate the Community Centre in October. WINTER BULB PLANTING for spring This has been taking place around the village by our dedicated Gardening Club team and volunteers. As well as the bus terminus roundabout, the grass verges on Heaton Moor Road and the seating area on Lascelles Hall Road have been planted with two varieties of daffodils to provide seasonal colour. These have been generously donated by Kirklees. YOUTH Chol Theatre s project The Yetton Trail, took place during February half term which was too late to be included in this issue but look on the website for photos and updates. Yetton Together is also supporting Leeds based charity Pavilion s project which will involve local young people and adults in research work on the Capability Brown landscape at Whitley Willows over the next 12 months. Activities will include site visits, archive trips, oral history and photography workshops. Kirklees Adventurous Activity team are keen to provide a outdoor skateboard event for our young people but funding will need to be found so it is unlikely to start before the summer holidays. 7 LAN UPDATES The Transport Group met with Council Representatives in November to discuss the four key areas identified by the Community Plan. The Council was provided with results of speeding and parking surveys carried by Yetton Together and PCSO s, along with a request to review our bus service to improve links to other areas and maintain our current service. Councillor Peter McBride chaired a follow up meeting in January with Kirklees Area Working and Safety Operational Manager, Kirklees Investment and Regeneration Operational Manager and a representative from Metro. BUSES A YT representative is to attend the regular operational planning meetings at the Town Hall where negotiations regarding our concerns on routes and timings can continue. It was pointed out that Huddersfield no longer has direct links with South Yorkshire and Route 262 is the only bus to service Kirkwood Hospice. PARKING The results of a postal and electronic survey were presented on time limited parking to alleviate the problems at the hazardous junction of Bankfield Lane, New Road and Town Road. This will now TRAFFIC & TRANSPORT be handed over to the Council s local issues review and YT will report their findings in due course. PEDESTRIAN SAFETY & CROSSINGS It was agreed that there are no formal facilities in the village and various difficult crossing locations were identified. Most desired crossing points i.e. around the shop areas, are in places where it would not be possible to position zebra crossings due to the existing road layout, line of sight and lack of off-road parking. However an assisted crossing point in Heaton Moor Road to provide access to the shops, bus stops and Doctors Surgery will be investigated. SPEEDING Due to the lack of any reported casualty statistics in Kirkheaton and the high cost of implementing, maintaining and enforcing speed restrictions, e.g Speed Indicator Devices, these cannot at present be deployed. Kirklees policy is that the 20 s Plenty Scheme will not be universally rolled out but treated on a case by case basis. Their guidance is that we work with our Neighbourhood Police Team with residents reporting inappropriate parking, speeding infringements and unwarranted heavy goods vehicle access. SCHOOL PARKING CAUSES SWIMMERS TO WALK In the past Kirkheaton school has had to request Police visits for incidents involving inappropriate parking. On Monday, 6th January the coach returning to school after the swimming lesson found Meadow Park impassable due to parents parking both sides preventing the driver from reaching New Road to drop off the children safely at the designated barriered entrance. Staff had to be called out and walk the children back to school. Acting Head, Mrs Barbara Robson, urges parents/carers to park responsibly. A survey carried out by our Neighbourhood Police Team and school children in November highlighted parking on double yellow lines, across drives/school entrance and verbal abuse. Details on our website, click on Archives, November 2013.

9 YETTON RANT MEMORIES Our local fair started in the 1890 s and is held every Springbank holiday weekend in the fields next to the Beaumont Arms on Church Lane. Its name was taken from the Anglo Saxon for Kirkheaton and an old word meaning Wild Revel. Childhood memories from the 1950 s include swingboats, the carousel, roll-a-penny, along with the smell of the candy floss making machine and brandy snap which were not readily available in shops. The 1960 s saw rock and roll records, not steam powered organ music, being blasted in our ears as we span round on the waltzer. The fair is organised by Mrs Alexandra Moran. She currently lives in Normanton and has been involved since a child following in her family s footsteps. It had been held continuously until 2010 when it had to be cancelled due to poor attendance the previous year. However the fair returned in Traditionally attendees of Kirkheaton Church and Sunday School would look forward to the Whit Tuesday Walk around the village and end the day with a visit to Yetton Rant. YT s youngest fund raisers Recently YT s youngest fund raisers efforts raised a magnificent total of for the community. The 6 girls, all pupils at Kirkheaton Primary School, sold homemade biscuits, cakes and gifts at the school s Christmas fair alongside their second hand toys. They presented the money to YT at its December Forum. A brilliant effort! It s good to see younger residents taking action for our community Pictured, left to right. Eve Ahmad, Imogen Aust, Holly Baker and Hannah Ahmad. Abigail Aust and Emily Baker also helped to organise things. Never had a better Andrew Heaton has recently published a book Never had a better telling the story of his family s history over 1000 years. It explores how the family fortunes fluctuated from the heights of influence as medieval knights to the depths of life in the workhouse and their involvement with Kirkheaton. Copies can be ordered and collected from Kirkheaton Church Parish Centre price or contact the author peelpark@btinternet.com A donation from each book goes to Kirkheaton Parish Church. 10

11 KIRKHEATON THEN & NOW Did you know... Field Head Co-operative Society [now Select & Save] existed before Rochdale Cooperative Society which claimed to be the first! It was founded in 1834 when 10 local people pooled their money to become the first shareholders. Until recently each member of the society had a personal co-op number which entitled them to receive a share of the profits [divi] based on how much they had spent in the shop. The society also owned 17 acres of land for the benefit of the members. Footpaths decisions Low Fold (Bankfield Lane to St Paul s Road), Kirkheaton Shop Lane to St Pauls Road, Kirkheaton In November 2013 Kirklees Council decided that on the balance of probability the two above footpaths were public rights of way and issued orders to add them to the definitive map. Any objections to these decisions had to be lodged by February 7th and forwarded to the Planning Inspectorate which will decide the outcome in the near future.
