4 DIRECTORY Introduction by Coun Sue Allsop D RONFIELD, in North East Derbyshire, is a town of around 23,000 inhabitants. It has a long history, being in existence before 1086, when the Domesday Book was produced. The Grade I listed Parish Church of St John the Baptist dates from the 13th Century, although it has had many additions and alterations in the last 800 years. For those interested in church architecture, it has a very fine chancel with some remaining ancient, carved choir stalls. It is also unusual in that there is an upper room, above the Vicar s Vestry, which was probably originally used as accommodation for a member of the clergy. On the High Street is the iconic Peel Monument, built in 1854, as a tribute to Sir Robert Peel, and to mark the repeal of the Corn Laws in Previously the site was occupied by the Market Cross and Stocks. Dronfield has its own Town Council, which meets at 7.30pm on the first Monday of every month, except August, and the local authority welcomes views from residents at its meetings. Amongst its responsibilities are the town s parks, and the Council is continuing to update the children s play equipment within these. Within the town itself, there is a wide range of voluntary groups, suitable for all ages and interests, and new members and volunteers are always welcome. Dronfield is twinned with the town of Sindelfingen, in Baden- Wurttemberg, Germany, and there is a very active Town-Twinning Association. There are excellent schools in the town, and places of worship, catering for many religious denominations. We also have an excellent sporting facility at Gosforth Fields and a modern Sports Centre in the Civic Centre. ELCOME to the fantastic 2015 Dronfield Directory. Whether you re thinking of taking up a new hobby or you re looking for somewhere nice to have a meal, you ll find it in this very special edition of Dronfield Eye. And with so many organisations and groups based in and around the area, it s no surprise that this is a bumper magazine. In Dronfield, we really are spoilt for choice. From water polo to women s groups and cricket to charities, there is something for everyone. If your New Year s resolution is to get fit, browse the sports section. Need a little pick me up after the festive season? Book an appointment at one of the beauty salons. The array of clubs - and the volunteers who put their time and effort into keeping them going - make Dronfield the fantastic place it is. It s one of the reasons why the town is so full of community spirit and why people love living here so much. We particularly have to remember the dozens of volunteers who give up their time and energy to set up and run these groups. None of it would be possible without them and it s important that we support them whenever we can. Thank you to everyone who makes Dronfield such a great place to live. I hope you all have a great 2015! 4 Town Mayor of Dronfield Dronfield has modern health care facilities, and three care homes, catering for those in need of residential and nursing care. It is well supplied with shops, public houses and restaurants, and has hotel accommodation available within the town. Dronfield was first granted a market by Charles II, in 1662, and although not held continually since then, there is now a thriving market, each Thursday, in the Civic Centre. The Peak District is close by, with all its beautiful and varied scenery, and great houses such as Hardwick Hall, Haddon Hall and Chatsworth are within easy reach. Dronfield is a pleasant, clean and safe town, with its own identity, separate from its larger neighbours. It enjoys low crime rates, and the local police and Town Council work together to keep it that way. I am sure, whether you live in the Coun Sue Allsop town, or are just visiting, you will find this Directory, which is published by Dronfield Eye, in collaboration with the Town Council, an invaluable source of information, which will allow you to access the best that Dronfield has to offer. Introduction by Natascha Engel MP for NE Derbyshire W Dronfield Directory 2015 Natascha Engel MP with Dronfield Eye commercial manager, Liza Justice This guide to the S18 district is produced by Heron Publications Ltd, publishers of Dronfield Eye, with the support of Dronfield Town Council.

5 Visit our showroom for great deals Open Mon-Sat 10am-5pm The designs were brilliant Space saving design was key to David and Debra Mottishaw s project at their Dronfield home and they were delighted with the result. Said David: Everyone involved was throughout and on the ball and it was never the case that you have to call them, they call you. The experience was stress-free and we re absolutely delighted with the finished job. Everything I had imagined... and more The team created a stunning, high-gloss finish kitchen for Holly Webster and her young family, at their new home. My new kitchen is everything I d imagined and more. I really love what Sheffield Kitchen Interiors have done, said Holly. The Heart of your home Family-run Sheffield Kitchen Interiors, at Meadowhead, was established five years ago by Paul Fish to create fantastic kitchens, bedrooms and home offices at affordable prices. The experienced team will look after every element of transforming a kitchen if required, including plumbing and plastering. The company prides itself on offering a friendly, personal service and first-class workmanship utilising the latest technology. Wonderful bedrooms too! Sheffield Kitchen Interiors creates stylish bedrooms as well as kitchens and the team created a romantic haven for Darren and Kay Wheelhouse, of Sheffield 5, paid for with money given to them by guests at their wedding. Darren said: We d definitely recommend Sheffield Kitchen Interiors to others. We wanted something to show for what we were given for our wedding and that s what we ve got. Susan s island paradise Susan Wragg, of High Green, chose contrasting sage and cream painted solid wood shaker doors for the dream kitchen she d always wanted. I m just so happy with everything Sheffield Kitchen Interiors did. I love how much easier things are when I m cooking. Everything went smoothly, from start to finish, and they made sure I got exactly what I wanted, she commented. 9 Just fabulous for the family F OR one of their latest projects, the experts at H2O Bathroom Solutions have created an impressive bathroom with a family feel at a home in Greenhill. Designer Martin Price worked with the clients - parents of two young children - to turn their own ideas for the space into reality. The old, traditional suite and lack-lustre electric shower was pulled out and the room stripped back to the brickwork to make way for a luxury new bathroom. Its features include a spacious walk-in shower, boasting both a rainfall and body shower, and the latest slateeffect resin tray, which allows for seamless integration with the textured, anti-slip porcelain floor tiles - perfect for easy maintenance. Another eye-catching fitting is the vanity unit along the back wall, housing an impressive double wash station. The entire upgrade was overseen by H2O Bathroom Solutions and completed by the fitting team within three weeks - in time for Christmas as the family wanted. The client, who called in H2O on the recommendation of friends, said: We were keen to see our old bathroom go and didn t realise that we had so much space in the bathroom until it was opened out. The shower itself is magnificent and once you get in there, you don t want to get out again! H2O were very good; they did the work to the time-scale they provided and there were no surprises in terms of budget. When the work was completed, Martin came back to make sure we were happy that everything had been done correctly. Open seven days a week, with out-of-hours appointments also available by request, visit H2O Bathroom Solutions at Chesterfield Road, Meersbrook, Sheffield S8 0RN, or call for more information CHESTERFIELD ROAD SHEFFIELD S8 0RN T F

19 contemporary traditional modern Fresh new look When Donna and Mick Merrill moved into their detached house in Totley at the end of last year, upgrading its four bedrooms was a priority. But the couple, both company directors, immediately knew which business to call in to do the bespok e work Supafit Bedrooms & Kitchens. Supafit had undertaken an impressive project at their previous home back in The speed at which Supafit could car ry out the design and installation work met the Merrills needs too. Within just a few weeks of their move-in date, work on the bedrooms was underway and the entire contract was completed in about three weeks. The master bedroom, rooms belonging to Donna and Mick s sons Ben, 20, and Jacob, 17, and the guest bedroom have all been given a fresh, luxurious look by Supafit. Each boasts co-ordinated bed bases, head boards, fitted wardrobes and other furniture. The impact is immediate and worthy of the house s stunning aspect with majestic views of Abbeydale and Ecclesall. Donna said: When we moved in, things were a bit chaotic and we had no bedroom furniture. I could have looked around but I went to Supafit as they had done such a good job for us before. It was a good deal and I liked the speed at which the work was done from the order going in. Supafit s Martin Backhouse designed some of the rooms around furniture transferred from the Merrills former home, which they wanted to keep. For the master bedroom, he incorporated Donna s request for a high-gloss black panel to run acr oss the middle of the wood-effect furniture. I wanted something different and I m pleased with the result, said Donna. Donna had particular praise for Chris, who carried out the fitting work in the main room. He was quick, cleaned up after himself and a nice, friendly lad. Of Supafit, Donna added: I d recommend them to anyone. They are a pleasure to work with. Supafit Bedrooms & Kitchens, run by Martin and his wife Jayne, has been designing, producing and fitting made-to-measure bedrooms for over 20 years with a reputation for high quality products and exacting customer service at a competitive price. The high gloss black panel requested by Donna makes a striking feature of the furniture in the master bedroom Unit 5, Heeley Business Centre, Guernsey Road, Sheffield S2 4HG Beech Works, Wreakes Lane, Dronfield S18 1PN Designed, manufactured & fitted to your own personal requirements

32 DIRECTORY Favourite places Where is your favourite place in the Dronfield area? Is it a vantage point that takes your breath away, a building that holds special significance in your life or perhaps you re happiest in your own back garden? Dronfield Eye s Deborah Wain posed the question to a group of local people and here s what they told us basis. The little ones get so much from this and have loads of fun while gaining knowledge of bible stories. My Christian beliefs keep me strong and give me hope for a better future for us all, not only in Dronfield but in the world in which we live in. We need to take care of what God has given us for future generations to enjoy and cherish. Eleanor Bennett, pupil at Henry Fanshawe School and Dronfield Eye columnist Alan Powell, chairman of Dronfield Musical Theatre Group SINCE appearing in a school play, I ve been hooked on The smell of the greasepaint and the roar of the crowd. So my choice of a favourite S18 location is an easy one: the left-hand dressing room behind the stage of the Civic Hall. Why? Because it means I m involved in a production and donning make-up and costume ready to go on stage. The room is simple enough with work surfaces a bit like a kitchen; mirrors round the walls; a costume rail in the middle, chairs and a sink. But it is the atmosphere that gives the buzz. The noise of people checking their lines; the smell of the Leichner five and nine make-up sticks and the nervous excitement waiting for the loudspeaker announcement of Beginners, Act One. Tracey Ellin, District Commissioner for Girlguiding in Dronfield THIS is tricky for me as my time is given mostly to two special places. I do Brownies and Guides at Guideacre, featured recently in the Dronfield Eye, when we had completed the refurbishment due to large amounts of fundraising. It s a peaceful place and we re tucked away down a little lane, so the girls can play out safely on our field. We have fires and cook outside. The building looks out over field and, in the past, we ve seen lots of different birds, spotted wild flowers and done bug hunts. My second favourite place is St John's Parish Church. I love the history of the church and I never tire of the beautiful stained-glass windows. I enjoy listening to the choir as I can't sing myself - even the girls laugh with me when we sing camp songs! I take an active role within the church and I m a member of St John s District Church Council. At St John's, we have many groups with many different ages. Before life became very hectic for me as District Commissioner, I really enjoyed spending time with the Chattabox group who meet on a weekly 32 Tracey Ellin FOR me, a place that has special significance in S18 is Frith Wood, between Coal Aston and Dronfield. It s at the bottom of my grandparents road and so, when I was younger, on the days they looked after me, we would sometimes go walking there. Now, I still love going to the woods, particularly in the summer when the trees keep the wood shaded (if there s any sun) and my black Labrador, Boo, also enjoys himself quite a lot. However, he isn t too keen on waiting for all of the mud to be washed off him afterwards. My brother and I went sledging there when it snowed heavily a couple of years ago and I don t think I ll ever forget the look on the seven-yearold s face when he saw the steep slope and exclaimed, people have died going down there!. Thankfully, the consequence wasn t quite as severe but my friend and I did end up colliding with a bush, which hurt quite a lot!

33 DIRECTORY Summer or winter, the gardens at Ramshaw Lodge, Unstone, always look spectacular Jill Bethell, former GP and local charity champion ANYONE who knows me will immediately guess my favourite corner in S18, and know that it must be our garden at Ramshaw Lodge! It is the site of the old Unstone Collery from , when it was full of coal dust and grime, workers young and old, with the coal trains passing through taking Unstone coal and coke to London. Who could ever have imagined the beauty and tranquil peace in the same place 100 years later? My favourite time of year here is very early spring with the snowdrops in the grass, along the river banks, in the woodland garden, then the celandines, followed by the small Lakeland daffodils in the drive lawns, and the daffodils lining the paths through the woodlands. The sound of the Siscar Brook, joining the River Drone, and the waterfall all join the chorus of birdsong often so loud that I can t hear myself think. By April and into May, rhododendrons and azalias flourish, and are at their most dramatic and the Edwardian Rock Garden is at its best. The large lawn, once a grass tennis court, comes into its own in May and June, and is the perfect place for its annual charity events - open gardens, then the Rotary Club of the Drone Valley s jazz lunch followed by our annual garden party. September and October bring the wonderful warm soft autumn colours, with the red oaks, yellow maples, silver birches and bright azalia leaves and, finally winter comes with the sparkling white of the hoar frost and the snow, outlining every branch and twig, on the trees and shrubs. The garden seems to have everything partly formal, partly natural. There are many seats, many hidden peaceful corners, to sit and just enjoy your thoughts and the peace and beauty all around. As the saying goes You are nearer God s heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth, and I agree. Elaine Ward, active community member and fund-raiser for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) I D have to say my favourite corner of S18 is The Peel Centre. It s where I meet every Monday afternoon with The Dronfield Singers and where I get together with The Quilting Bees every month. It s where I ve seen such wonderful exhibitions by the Photographic Society and heard the stimulating Dronfield Lectures. It s where we had our first Children s Craft Taster Day for arts@s18. It s where we warmed the mulled wine for the first Christmas at The Barn. I could also have said my favourite place is St Andrew s where my WI meets, where the Jubilate Singers practice and where we rehearsed The Armed Man which we put on at the Civic Hall on Remembrance Sunday I could have said the Civic Hall where, with my friends at Dronfield Twinning, we put on a quiz once a year in February and hold a craft fair in November. I could have said Hallowes Golf Club where Dronfield Inner Wheel meets. It was because of them that I was able to organise for CRY to screen 100 youngsters at Gosforth Fields in July, 2014, for undiagnosed heart problems. I could have said St John s Church where the community within a community supported me and my family after my son Neil collapsed and died in 1992, but I ve also had special times there singing with the Jubilate Singers and Friends of the Choir. My favourite places are where the very special people of Dronfield come together. I wouldn t be anywhere else. William Eardley, Vicar of Holmesfield IT may sound cheesy, but I suppose my favourite spot in S18 has to be the church in Holmesfield. Its location is stunning, on the ridge that overlooks Sheffield to the north and Chesterfield to the south. It s believed that there has been a place of worship here for over 1,200 years. The broken preaching cross in the churchyard is evidence that monks from Lindisfarne passed this way more than a thousand years ago. The present building, built in 1826, overlooks the green in Totley where England was united. The church s name of St Swithin, is after the Bishop of Winchester, who was the teacher to the King of Mercia and who signed the agreement with the King of Northumberland in Totley. This ancient division between Mercia and Northumberland still exists in the provinces of Canterbury and York within the Church of England. The view from the tower of the church is spectacular. On a good day, it s said that Lincoln Cathedral can be seen. When one looks to the west in late summer one can see the purple heather on the moors which is a magnificent sight. Many in Holmesfield have said that when the wind blows from the east in winter it feels as though it has come St Swithin s Church at Holmesfield straight from Russia. It s actually a fact that if one were able to travel due east at the same height as the church you would not encounter anything in your way until you reached a spot just south of Moscow, a distance of about 1,500 miles. It s said that the air in Holmesfield is always moving and may be the reason why many past residents have lived into their 90s and more! Looking south over the Cordwell Valley, one finds it hard to imagine that just over 300 years ago there were lead smelters in that valley. Looking north is the city of Sheffield and beyond. Holmesfield is not a traditional village as one might expect, but is made up of seven hamlets and the parish itself covers a very large area. It s blessed with several woods and numerous bridal paths and walking trails. It s in the countryside, just. Close enough to the city and town centres that surround it and also a gateway to the Peak District. I feel particularly blessed to have spent the past 15 years living in Holmesfield and can t really think of any place more pleasant to be. 33

38 DIRECTORY Give some of your time Dronfield Eye s teenage correspondent, Eleanor Bennett, a student at Henry Fanshawe School, suggests volunteering could be something to consider in 2015 I N the UK, around 28% of year-olds and 52% of year-olds volunteer each year. This can be anything from assisting at an out-of-school club to helping in a charity shop. There are many benefits to volunteering at all ages, however, in particular, young people can greatly benefit. Obviously, the main one is being able to help out a worthy cause, yet there are also many other benefits; some of these include a fantastic experience to put on your CV, an opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills and to use spare time beneficially. Also, volunteering is usually flexible and so fits in well around school work. I have volunteered on numerous occasions, including weekly volunteering at a charity shop and the library during summer. From this, I have met some fantastic people and had many opportunities. I asked another teenager, Amy Bakewell, 13, what her experiences of volunteering were like. She told me: Volunteering has pushed me to get out of my comfort zone and become more confident. It s a great way to get some work experience while having fun and meeting new people. Volunteering may also lead to paid work at a later time. For example, Katie Scarlett, 18, started volunteering aged 16 and now has a paid Eleanor Bennett: It s an opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills and to use spare time beneficially part-time position in the charity shop in which she works. Many teenagers say that they feel too young to volunteer and fear they will not be accepted, however, many charities and organisations will be extremely welcoming of any help although some organisations may only accept over 16s - this could be due to using cash tills. It is always worth asking if you feel volunteering is something you would like to try. I have found my experiences volunteering have all been highly rewarding and no matter if you volunteer for a day or weekly, you will be helping both yourself and others. Perhaps it is something to try for 2015! Do you need family law advice? 42 DIRECTORY Aid from 17th century fund The legacy of a Dronfield blacksmith, keen to give the poor of his town a step up, is still having a positive impact, more than 300 years after his death. Deborah Wain reports H UNDREDS of young Dronfield people starting out in their careers have benefitted from funds bequeathed by blacksmith Thomas Taylor, who died in The Thomas Taylor Foundation has recently given out its latest annual round of awards totalling 1,700 to 18 applicants. Although the scheme was originally set up to support apprentices, today it also helps young people meet the cost of study. The charity s chairman, Coun Graham Baxter, said: Recipients might only get a small amount but it can be a real help during an expensive time by helping them to buy books or equipment. It s great to think that young people are still benefitting all these years after Thomas Taylor left the funds. Thomas s blacksmith s shop was near to the corner of Church Street and High Street, where Taylor s Buildings now stand. In his will, the tradesman directed that all his property in Dronfield 42 Society targets environmental issues in 2015 A NOTHER busy year is in store for Dronfield Civic Society as it continues projects to protect and improve both the area s natural and man-made environments. The group has unveiled its five priorities for the future after celebrating its 25th anniversary in They are: Engaging young people with its work, especially through working with schools. Challenging activities which spoil the look of the town, including litter, fly-tipping, fly-posting and graffiti. Working and campaigning to protect the green belt and heritage assets and continuing to support sustainable and appropriate development in the town. Campaigning to improve the street scene and to make the area more pedestrianfriendly. Continuing to work with and support partner organisations and authorities to make the Dronfield area a pleasant and safe place in which to live. The Civic Society, initiated by Dronfield Rotary Club in 1989, has had only three chairs during its quarter-century Maureen Green, Bob Clough, and John Harvey - supported by a small committee, some of whom have served for many years. The group lists its five greatest achievements over the years as follows: Undertaking practical projects bulb and tree planting, installation of public seats, litter-picking, stream and river clearance, enhancing the townscape, including installation and maintenance of the ladles at the entrances to the town and cleaning Snape Hill steps. Monitoring and commenting on local plans and planning applications and campaigning against encroachment of the Green Belt as well as maintaining appropriate standards in conservation areas. Working with local authorities to improve road safety and traffic calming measures and supporting resident groups with particular safety issues. Participated with the County Council in a national decluttering campaign to reduce redundant signage around the town. Working in co-operation with other voluntary groups in the town, such as the Leabrook Valley Project, the Old Dronfield Society, the Friends of Dronfield Station, Dronfield in Bloom and the Community Payback Team of the Probation Service Promoting high standards in architectural design and townscape through the annual John Robert Clough Awards, for a significantly improved or new building, shop frontage or community project. Encouraging excellence in young people through the annual Young Achiever Award at Henry Fanshawe School. should go to the son and daughter of a kinsman of his in London and then to his brother James. The 4 rent for the property was to be paid yearly to James at the Market Cross in Dronfield. After the deaths of named heirs, Thomas Taylor asked that their inheritance should go to the overseers of the poor in Dronfield and their successors. The profits from it were to be used to fit out poor children of the town as apprentices to any lawful trade or trades in any place or places within the Kingdom of England. Awards are made using only the interest on the original funds and the amount recipients receive depends on the number of applicants. Applicants must be 21 or under at the time of the first grant but trustees have the power to continue the grant until they reach the age of 24. Applications should be made to the Trust via Dronfield Town Council. Coun Baxter said that, although in recent years there have been more young people receiving assistance with their education beyond school, the charity was seeing a resurgence in applications from apprentices. He added that numerous grateful recipients had written to thank trustees over the years. One recipient sent back the grant that they had received so someone else could benefit, he added. Have you received support from the Thomas Taylor charity and, if so, how did it help you with your chosen career? your story to deborah@heronpublications.co.uk or ring Dronfield Hall Barn opening T HE next 12 months are going to be the most momentous year for Dronfield Hall Barn on High Street since builders first moved in to construct it on That s because 21st century builders are on site again to restore the medieval structure to its former glory and at the same time build an extension sympathetic the original timber-frame structure. And towards the end of the year, Dronfield Hall Barn will again open its doors to the Dronfield community as it becomes the town s hub for a programme of arts, heritage and natural history activities. Food and drink will be served all day in the ground floor heritage suite and courtyards, whilst the main medieval gallery room is designed for meetings, dining and special occasion functions. The historic grounds will also be available for larger events and festivals. 45 DIRECTORY Doreen s a centenarian If you want to live a long and healthy life, Epsom Salts and an occasional tot of whisky are recommended by Doreen Wilson. She talks to Dronfield Eye s Deborah Wain A DRONFIELD resident born during the first Christmas of World War One has celebrated her 100th birthday. Although tumultuous events were taking place when she came into the world, Doreen Wilson feels she has enjoyed the best of times during her lifetime. Doreen was born the eldest of seven children in Sheffield, and spent much of her life in the city until moving to Dronfield Woodhouse nine years ago. She has one surviving brother, who lives in Cornwall. Doreen met her late husband, Gordon, a maintenance engineer, during an outing to the cinema and they went on to marry in Children are driving force for Fairtrade T Doreen has a son, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren who were among the guests at a party in her honour at Gosforth Sports Ground. While Doreen has sworn by Epsom Salts and an occasional tot of whisky over the years, she puts her longevity down to enjoying life. She loved to dance and played bowls until she was in her 80s. She is still a member of the Welcome Club. She said: I ve been lucky because I had a good husband and a decent life and never had much to worry about. I take everything as it comes. Of all the changes she s seen in her lifetime, it s the difference in the cost of living that has been most dramatic. She remembers her first factory job paid just six shillings (30 pence) a week! For her birthday on Christmas Eve, Doreen received a telegram from the Queen, many cards and flowers, and gifts including a hamper from Henry Fanshawe School. HE year 2015 will be Dronfield s fifth as a Fairtrade town and volunteers will be trying to encourage more businesses to back the campaign. Fairtrade status means that the community has made a commitment to supporting Fairtrade, and through it to support disadvantaged farmers and workers in developing countries. During Fairtrade Fortnight, which takes place from 23rd February to 8th March, the Dronfield Fairtrade Steering Group will be asking local firms to support the initiative by stocking or providing Fairtrade products. Meanwhile, volunteers continue to work with several local schools and two of them - Northfield and Holmesdale - have now achieved Fairtrade status by meeting a number of criteria. The group s Mike Heap said: Children are our main drivers in terms of awareness as they point out Fairtrade products to their parents when shopping. The resurfacing was funded with a grant from Landfill Tax Credits by Viridor Credits, an environmental body and independent charity. Every tonne of waste that is collected by landfill operators is subject to Landfill Tax. This came into effect in 1996 as a way to encourage local authorities and landfill operators to reuse, reprocess or recycle as much waste as possible before it reaches landfill. Included in the Landfill Tax Act was the Landfill Communities Fund, a scheme that allows landfill operators to donate a percentage of their Landfill Tax liability to an enrolled environmental body. This funding is used to support a wide range of community, heritage and environmental projects in the vicinity of landfill sites. Since its inception in 1996, over 1 billion has been spent on more than 32,000 projects across the UK. 50 DIRECTORY Return River Drone to its former glory 50 Dear Dronfield Eye, CAN I ask the residents of Dronfield if they would be willing to join the Wild Trout Trust s Trout in the Town project? I like to walk down the banks of the River Drone in Dronfield and think it s a shame that some residents use the river as a dumping ground. I think if we joined together we could return the river to its former glory with trout and grayling swimming in the river as it flows through the town Trout in the Town is the Wild Trout Trust s programme that helps urban communities engage with and care for their local stream or river. Trout in the Town is looking for unloved streams and we want to help as many people as we can to restore and protect the wildlife haven corridors that run through the areas that we, as a society, have built on, in and over. More details at: Craig Mason Dear Dronfield Eye, I WOULD like to make comment on the failure of the gritting service we pay for on the evenings of 26th and 27th December. Snow was forecast well in advance, so no excuses - gritting should have been plentiful after last year. Bus route Cemetery Road and Hallowes Lane and the fire station on that road saw no gritters. On the 27th, a double-decker bus was stuck on Hallowes Lane; thank goodness for our firemen who came to the rescue. We are one of the highest rated places in NE Derbyshire but in bad weather ignored! Many thanks to the young man seen clearing the top of Palmer Crescent on his own. I hope the residents thanked him and gave him some Christmas cheer. Ann, Dronfield Dear Dronfield Eye, I HAVE recently received my copy of Dronfield Eye and am disgusted to see that some organisations want to make the Remembrance Day service shorter. It should not matter how long this service takes, just that we remember them. The organisations shouldn't be laying wreathes if this is how they feel. David, Dronfield Dear Dronfield Eye, I HAVE just read the latest edition of Dronfield Eye and I am disgusted with the request to speed up the Remembrance Day service. If the Scouts and other organisations cannot spare a few minutes once a year to remember those who sacrificed their lives for us, they shouldn't be laying wreaths. Well done the Town Council for continuing the remembrance service traditions. Shame on the people who requested this. Daniel Holmes, Dronfield What ideas do you have for the future use of these telephone boxes at Eckington Road in Coal Aston (left) and Oakhill Road? Ideas sought for phone boxes Moves are afoot to keep these two call boxes as part of the S18 landscape... but how would you like to see them used in future? T HE red phone box is one of Britain s most instantly recognisable icons but the rise of mobiles has left them unused and neglected. Communities have come up with some imaginative new functions for obselete kiosks under a 1 adoption scheme, including local information points and mini art galleries. Now Dronfield Civic Society is planning to take over two dilapidated local boxes and wants to hear your ideas. Committee member David Hallam said the boxes - in Coal Aston and at the junction of Dronfield s Oakhill Road and Falcon Road - are a quintessential part of British heritage. He said: Technically known as K6 kiosks, they were designed by Sir Giles Scott to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of King George V, in In order to retain these kiosks as heritage structures, Dronfield Civic Society is proposing to adopt them. BT will disconnect them, provide a repainting kit and any glazing required, and Dronfield Scouts and Guides are keen to help with the repainting. On completion, they could be made available for community use - a book swap immediately springs to mind - but we want to hear residents own ideas. 53 Is paying for care fair? How to fund care for our aging population is a problem politicians are yet to solve. Nichola Carmichael, a wills and probate specialist at Dronfield solicitors Taylor&Emmet LLP, advises about forthcoming changes A S individuals, we are becoming increasingly aware that residential support may be necessary at some point and how to finance it is a major concern for those planning their future. The Government is introducing changes in April, aimed at streamlining the care system for the elderly and making the funding criteria fairer. Nichola Carmichael, a wills and probate specialist at Taylor&Emmet LLP, said: People are under the impression that the local authority will take their property to pay for residential care. This is not actually what happens, but the reality is most homeowners do have to sell up in the end. At the moment, anyone with capital exceeding 23,250 is required to pay for the cost of their own residential care. If you have assets of between 14,250 and 23,250, you will be asked for a contribution to the cost and those with less than 14,250 are funded by the state. From April, those Nichola Carmichael who need residential care, but have no capital other than the equity in their property, will be offered a Deferred Payment Agreement. This means the fees can be borrowed from the local authority and repaid from the resident s estate after death. The government is also introducing a cap on care costs, although it will not come into force until The upper and lower limits will increase to 118,000 and 17,000 respectively, with the intention that no one will have to pay more than 72,000 for care if they are of state pensionable age. However, certain expenses will not be included in the cap and residents will be expected to contribute towards daily living and any support not provided by their standard package. Nichola concluded: The care system is very complex and despite attempts to simplify the law, it is imperative people obtain legal advice when planning their estate and managing those of loved ones. This is a really special place and a true learning community with shared values. The community is made up of our wonderful children, their families, our parishes and our committed team of staff. We are incredibly excited to be extending our age range as we are opening a nursery in September 2015 for three and four year old children. Our school was recently judged by Ofsted to be Outstanding in all areas, including our Early Years Foundation Stage, where inspectors found that children make rapid and outstanding progress and enter Year 1 with development often higher than expected of children of the same age. Ofsted also confirmed that teaching across the school is outstanding because it is innovative, imaginative and inspires pupils to learn and expectations are very high and inspiring learning experiences support pupils to progress to a higher level. As headmaster of the school and a parent myself, I recognise that choosing a school for your child is one of the most important decisions that you will ever make. I would warmly encourage you to visit our school to see the high quality education we provide the children with and to experience our very special Catholic ethos. 56 DIRECTORY Busy year ahead for CRY screenings A HEART screening campaign begun by a Dronfield woman following the death of her son will see hundreds more young people undergo checks in Retired teacher Elaine Ward has been raising money to fund tests on young people aged between 14 and 35 in a bid to detect any heart problems. The programme has been organised through charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) with funds raised for the Neil Ward Memorial Fund. Neil, a sixth-former at Henry Fanshawe School, died suddenly in 1992, aged 17. Elaine set up the fund in 2013 while president of Dronfield Inner Wheel Club. Since then, with the help of husband Ian, and supporters, Elaine has raised 19,000 to pay for a mobile cardiac unit to visit the area. A hundred young people were tested in Dronfield last year. This year, another 300 people will be screened at Chesterfield Football Club, on 11th July, at Gosforth Fields on 12th July and at Sheffield United Football Club, on 6th August. It s also hoped an event will be held in Rotherham. Undiagnosed heart problems cause the sudden deaths of at least 12 apparently fit and healthy people each week in the UK. Tests can identify problems, sometimes many years in advance of issues emerging. Elaine said there had been huge support for her campaign in Dronfield, including backing from local MP Natascha Engle. Elaine and Ian recently joined Natascha at a CRY Parliamentary reception in the House of Commons. Elaine said: The support I m getting for CRY in Dronfield is amazing. People really seem to identify with what I m trying to do and quite a few local organisations now have CRY as their charity of the year. I just want to get as many young people screened as possible as I think it's so important. Dronfield Women s Institute, among the groups to adopt CRY as their annual charity, recently presented Elaine with a cheque for the proceeds of a raffle at a soup and sweet lunch. Matt Sanderson, owner of Woodlands Fitness Centre in Dronfield, helps people see through the quick fix solutions I S 2015 the year you take control? At Woodlands, we have never been fans the quick fix or latest restricting diet that you always see at this time of year; they promise amazing results but leave you back at square one by the end of January. For some time, Woodlands has been working on a different method, one that combines the benefits of bespoke exercise and nutrition, focusing on getting results and re-educating. This is based on the real science behind what we believe to be a healthier way of doing things. Our six-week Fast Track programme gives you the perfect opportunity to start 2015 on the right foot and get results, but more importantly it continues to do so throughout the upcoming weeks, months and years! When Woodlands began promoting Fast Track, we knew it would work and we knew people would benefit from it. However, we didn t really know how successful it would be. These are a couple of comments we have received: Six weeks later and one stone lighter, what more can I say? The nutritional knowledge I ve gained means I won t touch another low-fat or diet product again, safe in the knowledge I keep losing weight and will continue to do so. The results really do speak for themselves. The best part is that when you make the changes they stick, they become part of your life - no matter how busy it may be - and you have the ability to see through the quick fix or diet that make all the promises but often fall short, long term. Check out what previous Fast Trackers have to say about it all at For more information please feel free to call on or info@woodlandsfitnesscentre.co.uk

Revellers took along picnic hampers, tables and chairs and had a fantastic time. The money raised was shared between Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, Sheffield Children s Hospital and the Mayor s of Dronfield s Charity. Delighted recipients are pictured, from left: Gemma Bower, community fund-raiser at Sheffield Children s Hospital, Town Mayor Coun Sue Allsop and Lucy King, community fund-raiser at Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity 58 The performance of Rule The World goes down rather well at the 2014 Party in the Park D RONFIELD S fifth summer Party in the Park promises to be a particularly lively event, with 70s rockers Showaddywaddy guaranteed to get everyone on their feet with their string of memorable chart hits. The midlanders, who were an almost ever-present act on Top of the Pops from 1974 onwards, are sure to delight the Cliffe Park audience with Under The Moon of Love, Hey Rock n Roll, Three Steps to Heaven, Heartbeat, When, You Got What It Takes, Dancin Party, Pretty Little Angel Eyes... and many others. Even better news is that, following their massive success last summer, the hugely talented Take That tribute band, Rule The World, have accepted an invitation to return to Dronfield for a repeat performance on Saturday, July 11th. They have performed far and wide since wowing last summer s Party in the Park audience - women in particular - and recently appeared on TV on The Graham Norton Show. The bill will also feature Planet Abba, a colourful, highly rated tribute act celebrating one of Sweden s greatest ever exports.a fourth act has still to be confirmed. Tickets for the 2015 picnic-style show are already selling well and are available either from the Dronfield Town Council office in the Civic Hall or from the GoLocalExtra outlet at Chesterfield Road. Prices are ( 25 on the day) and 5 for children under 12. Main charity beneficiary will be Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. Further details on or check out Dronfield Party in the Park on Facebook.
