North Central Area Matters Pride of Place Winning entry Grange Woodbine, Raheny Representatives from Grange Woodbine, Dublin City, receive their award in the Neighbourhoods/ Villages with a population of category of the competition. Included are Dr Christopher Moran, Chairman Co-operation Ireland; Tom Dowling, Chairperson, Pride of Place, Michael McGreal, Vice Chair IPB Insurance and Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Councillor Gerry McMonagle.

IPB Pride of Place Winners Grange Woodbine Raheny Simply superb! The winners of the IPB Pride of Place Awards in association with Co-operation Ireland were announced in December at a gala awards ceremony in Letterkenny. The awards acknowledge the achievements and the invaluable work undertaken by volunteers and those involved in local community development. Grange Woodbine, Raheny, took top prize in Category 2 of the Cities Competition - Urban Neighbourhoods / Villages with a population of A delighted group of representatives from Grange Woodbine, Raheny, at the awards. Remarking on the entry, the judges said they considered this community to be a quality example of what is possible to achieve when people of vision dedicate themselves to improving the quality of life for all residents. As a result of concerted efforts over 50 years, this closely-knit community has amazing infrastructure and sporting facilities. The self-supporting community centre currently caters for three generations of users. The judges heard from a wide range of community activists, all working under the direction of an executive committee. This was a superb entry in this year s pride of place. The management & staff of the North Central Area Office are delighted to congratulate the group on an outstanding achievement & to thank them all most sincerely, for their continued contribution to the North Central Area. 2

Public Realm Issues I m dreaming of a white..march? Members of Dublin City Council s Park s Department hard at work clearing paths in Raheny The management & staff of the North Central Area Office would like to extend our sincere thanks to our crews on the ground, who have done trojan work in getting the area moving again, both during & after the recent inclement weather. We would also like to thank members of the public for their contribution & continued patience as our services endeavour to return to normal. If you have access to Twitter, check out our tweets on Twitter Fire Brigade and Ambulance: 999 or 112 Dangerous Buildings: (01) All Other Services: (01)

Public Realm Issues R139, what a difference a day makes! As the saying goes, you never get a second chance to make a good first impression. Here in North Central, we are particularly aware of this, being the gateway to the city from the North. We do our best to show case the area & make it as welcoming as we can. Our Public Domain team continuously monitor all routes that could be used by airport & tourist traffic to ensure that they are kept clean & graffiti free, giving visitors the very best first impression of our city possible. However, we need your help to keep our city clean. We would like to remind motorists that it is an offence to drop litter from your car & is subject to a fixed penalty fine of 150. We had some issues along the R139 but as you can see the thoroughfare is now sparkling! If you have access to utube, click here to see a video of the before & after. 4

Public Realm Issues Village & Area Enhancements The Public Domain team is eager to work with Community Groups & local Businesses in North Central to improve the aesthetics of the area. We are delighted with the engagement thus far. New signage & beautiful planters have been placed in various locations throughout North Central, with For further details, contact: Community Groups & Businesses taking ownership of their area & agreeing to maintain them. Indeed, Coolock Village in particular is looking wonderful, having had considerable investment from the Council in terms of new paving with granite kerbing, additional lighting & seating, as well as the signage & planters. According to the Irish Times, Coolock is a highly sought after place to live. The team also works closely with our Waste Management division & can offer a street washing service which includes power jetting of footpaths, bins and lamp posts which are in need of cleansing in areas of high footfall, such as local shops & shopping areas. Environmental Liaison Officer Catherine Brophy Walsh ( ) 5

Public Realm Issues Village & Area Enhancements Daring us to hope that a brighter tomorrow is on the way, nothing heralds the onset of spring quite as triumphantly as the stately daffodil, bringing us golden good cheer & banishing the long dark days of winter. As part of our village & area enhancement programme, Dublin City Council has planted at least 150,000 spring bulbs throughout North Central, with a staggering total of 1 million bulbs planted citywide. I wandered lonely as a cloud, that floats on high o er vales & hills, when all at once I saw a crowd, a host of golden daffodils William Wordsworth The daffs on the central median on the Coolock Village end of the Malahide Road, are just coming into flower now. Further planting has taken place on the Oscar Traynor Road & the roundabout at the Abbey in Donaghmede. The junction of Howth Road & Watermill Road in Raheny, will have a spectacular display this year, with all sorts of spring bulbs from snowdrops to hyacinths, alliums to tulips, not forgetting the daffs. We know that Mother s Day is on the way, but we ask that you respect these displays & not allow little fingers to pick them, as they are for the enjoyment of all. Besides, Mammies would much rather see them growing naturally than cut in a vase! 6

Public Realm Issues Graffiti Removal Circa 7,000sqm of graffiti was removed from the North Central Area in 2017, on foot of notifications by civic minded residents in the area and observations made by the Public Domain Team, who carry out regular inspections. Anti Graffiti measures such as the Art on Utility Box Project, have worked really well in the area, with the number of decorated boxes by art groups, increasing year on year. Each box has an appropriate theme for the area they are in. Pictured is a nautical theme for a box located on the Clontarf Road near the sea. We are delighted to report that out of 20 boxes decorated in the area, only one of them has been tagged. If you know an art group in your area that would be interested in participating in the project, contact: Environmental Liaison Officer Catherine Brophy Walsh ( ) 7

Public Realm Issues Clanmoyle Flood Alleviation Residents of Clanmoyle Road, Donnycarney can now look forward to an aesthetically pleasing green space, in addition to the peace of mind that the flood alleviation scheme has afforded. The horror of potential flooding is well behind them, now that the mechanical and electrical element of the alleviation scheme has been successfully completed. A detailed landscape design has been prepared by the City Council s Parks & Landscaping Department to improve the appearance of the new inlet chamber within the green area in the centre of Clanmoyle Road. We are currently in the process of procuring a contractor to carry out these works. It is envisaged that the installation could commence during the current years planting season & possibly as early as March For further details, contact john.mccooey@dublincity.ie 8

Public Realm Issues Oscar Traynor Lands Update The Oscar Traynor site development tender was published on 10th February and has been widely welcomed. Construction is expected to start in the first quarter of For more information click here. 9

Public Realm Issues New Astro Pitch at Trinity Sports The Clongriffin/ Donaghmede area now has a brand new all weather soccer pitch to add to it s portfolio of great facilities. Having identified a need in the area, Dublin City Council s North Central Area Office (in conjunction with our Parks Department) opened the pitch at Trinity Sports and Leisure in late Autumn Since then, use of the pitch is in full swing, with 6 clubs booking full time use for training every evening and playing games at the weekend. Open to all clubs, 3 local schools currently use the facility during the day for their school matches. Dublin City Council are also using the facility for community events such as active schools week, European week of Sports and other such activities. 10

Public Realm Issues Rockfield Park It s love all at Rockfield Park! Revamping works are well underway. The old surfaces have been removed and the courts now benefit from a new surface water drainage system, to deal with periodic flooding to nearby residents. A new sustainable urban drainage system was also installed. All the courts have been resurfaced; the upper courts with tarmac and the middle and lower courts now benefit from new synthetic and artificial clay resurfacing respectively. Other improvements include a new all-weather soccer training pitch with new enclosure fencing and the installation of LED floodlighting to illuminate the playing surfaces of both the soccer pitch and the courts. Further floodlighting and a synthetic surface will be installed on the upper courts as part of the next phase of works associated with the new tennis pavilion. It is anticipated that these works will commence in So it s game, set and match to Rockfield Park! 11

Housing Issues Rebuilding Ireland Home Loan The Rebuilding Ireland Home Loan is a new Government-backed mortgage for first-time buyers. It will be available nationwide from local authorities from Thursday, 1 February The loan can be used both for new and second-hand properties, or to build your own home. For further details of the scheme click here. To download an application form, click here. 12

Community Issues Drug Prevention Programme Sadly, there are few Irish families whose lives (or the lives of someone they know) haven't been affected by an addiction of some kind, often with devastating consequences. A number of stakeholders in our communities are working to help, but some are doing so in isolation & without much success. It is very difficult to reduce the use of substances available, but a more cohesive approach between our communities, young people & agencies, working together for the common good, may be more effective in achieving this goal long term. The National Drug Strategy encourages young people to stay fit, strong and healthy through sport..and especially football! To this end, the Dublin North East Drugs & Alcohol Task Force, the FAI & Dublin City Council, have joined forces to deliver a family based Drug Prevention and Education programme through Sport, aimed at children, parents & sports coaches. Collectively, the agencies believe that this is a great opportunity to promote an awareness of the harm that drugs can cause & is the beginning of a new path to combating the problem of substance abuse among our young people, in a healthy setting. The programme will be officially launched in the coming weeks at the Oscar Traynor Football Club & will ultimately be available to schools & all coaches in every sporting organisation, starting with Soccer. If you are on face book click here to hear interview with Say No Madeleine Ebbs

Community Issues Stardust Walkers take to the gym! North Central Area s Senior Community Officer Madeleine Ebbs is delighted with the uptake of the Stardust Walkers Group, which has proved highly successful. Building on the group s increased capacity, Madeleine & David Knowles (owner and manager of Evolutis Family Gym in Coolock) joined forces to offer the walkers (& other active age groups in the area) a 6 week free trial session in the gym on Thursday mornings and they are loving it! Our sincere thanks to David for affording the group the opportunity. For further details contact: Madeleine Ebbs

NCA Sports Issues Change for Life Programme We were delighted to the response we had to the North Central Area s Change for Life Programme which ran throughout January and February. We had 62 people sign up to the programme and approximately 35 people attending the group exercise classes on Monday s and Wednesdays. Some of the group exercising in Darndale Sports Centre For further details on this and our other sports programmes in the area contact: Jason Brady Dan Russell Niall Mc Donald Jason.brady@dublincity.ie Daniel.russell@dublincity.ie niall.mcdonald@dublincity.ie 15

NCA Sports Issues The Raheny Way! Launched to coincide with the Operation Transformation walk that took place in Raheny in January, the Raheny Way is a new booklet which outlines beautiful walks in our very own Raheny. A collaboration between Claire O Sullivan (Raheny Tidy Village Group) & our Sports Officer Dan Russell, this little booklet comes complete with historical content as well as a detailed map guiding walkers through three unique routes: the coast walk, the beach walk & the Raheny Way. So now, there really is no excuse not to play the tourist, getting fit & healthy in the process! Maps are available from Raheny Library & from the North Central Area Office in Bunratty Road. Alternatively, you can download them here.
