3 Notes from the Editor Do you feel the urge to make notes whenever your spot wildlife? For me, I think this stems from keeping a Nature Diary at primary school. Our first task of each school day at Dennington Primary, we were compelled to find something interesting to write about for Mrs Williams. If it was interesting enough, we were asked to re-write it in a hardbacked book - a great privilege! When she was having a clear-out, Mrs Williams gave me the diary from 1983/84. The first entry is written by Clare Bostock-Smith age 9 who had returned from the Summer holidays with the news that there was a hornet s nest next door. Graham Foster age 8 had been counting crane flies. Carolyn Parmenter described a spiders web, sparkling with dew. Mark Firth was studying ash trees while his brother Daniel had seen a pheasant in their garden. It took two weeks before I had anything interesting to write up in the Nature Diary - I had seen a Daddy Long Legs on the Village Hall door when I went to Youth Club. Meanwhile, Selwyn Moyse had seen a stoat - I bet he made that up! If we have any budding nature diarists in the village, feel free to send me your sightings. I would like to report that this week in Badingham I have seen a yellow hammer, two linnets and three red deer! You ll see from the Diary on the left that there s lots going on in the village this Summer, so please give the organisers your support. Best wishes, Tish The ECHO is produced for the villagers of Badingham by the Badingham Community Council Registered Charity No The Editor s decision on whether or where to place material is final. While every effort is made to check information published, the BCC does not endorse the accuracy or reliability of any article or advert within the magazine. E.O.E. 3

4 BADINGHAM In April, Gerry met with an electrician and asbestos assessor at the Village Hall and fortunately no problems were found. Now we are waiting for a response to the reports filed with the Co-op and hoping an installation date for our defibrillator is not too distant. It was a warm, sunny morning when Rita, Sonja and Tish joined the children on their Easter Egg Hunt. Just four Badingham children were joined by grandchildren of people from the village lots of eggs to go round! Rob Welham has done a marvelous job clearing and tidying the Pocket Park; the BCC send their thanks for his hard work. We re looking forward for a fine afternoon for this year s fete remember last year s wind and rain! We re back at the White Horse with thanks to Lisa and Mark and attractions will include a BBQ and Bar, Bouncy Castle, Live Music and Carpet Bowls. 13 BADINGHAM NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH Sonja Russell, Head Co-Ordinator Tel: As many will have heard, there are moves to merge the Suffolk and Norfolk Emergency Police Control Rooms into a Centre at Wymondham, Norfolk which will jeopardise front line policing. I think this is a short-sighted proposal. Norfolk Police would have no knowledge of out County, with all its nooks and crannies and sometimes difficult to pronounce village names. 13 places names are duplicated in Suffolk and Norfolk, a real recipe for confusion. Why is it always Suffolk which loses out? We have lost both our local Fire Control Room and our Ambulance Control Room, now having to fight hard to keep our Police Control Room. Police Control Room Staff and Police Officers are against it - there should be other ways to reduce costs. I have been campaigning against this for our village and beyond; voicing my opinions at Police Meetings. We need YOUR SUPPORT to campaign to keep Suffolk s front line. Police Crime Commissioner s website or write to Tim Passmore at Martlesham Police Headquarters. There is a Police Meeting at the Market Hall, Saxmundham, IP17 1AF on Mon 21st July, 2014 at 6.30pm. I look forward to seeing some of you there. BURGLARIES - cash, including 100 euros, was stolen from Dennington on Mon 24th March, between 9.10am pm. A light coloured - possibly white - car was seen parked outside around 12.30pm and 3 males in their mid 20s all of slim build, wearing grey hooded tops were seen in the area at that time. Officers believe this burglary may be linked to another in Badingham Road, Framlingham between 9am and 3.20pm. If you saw either the vehicle or the young men, or have any information, please contact Suffolk Coastal CID by dialling quoting Ref No. LE/14/276. BADINGHAM OIL THEFT Around 1,000 litres of domestic heating oil was stolen from a tank at a home in Mill Road, between 10pm Wednesday 12th and 8am on Thursday 13th March. Police are asking you to report any suspicious behaviour to PC Tim Green dialling 101 quote Ref LE/14/245. PEASENHALL P.O. BURGLARY We are celebrating good news - the burglars who broke in on Sunday 23 rd June 2013 have been caught and jailed for 14 years. The three men were part of an organised crime group, who carried out a spate of burglaries at business premises across East Anglia. 13

14 ANGLERS NEED A LICENCE- Anglers face a court summons and fines of 2,500 if they are caught fishing without a licence. You must have a rod licence if you fish, there is no getting away with it says Lesley Robertson, Environment Agency Environmental Crime Team Leader. Water courses are monitored all year round, including weekends and Bank Holidays. Annual licences start at 27, or 5 for juniors and 18 for the over-65s and Blue Badge holders. Get one now at the Post Office or online. BUZZARDS - It is illegal to shoot these beautiful common birds of prey, they are protected. We ourselves are very lucky to have them breeding on Colston Farm. Anyone who should shoot them will be reported to PC Mark Bryant at Suffolk Police 101. MICRO-CHIP YOUR DOGS - There have been many dogs stolen in Suffolk over the past few years. To help recover dogs to their rightful owners, take clear photos, front and side views, and micro-chip your dogs. Any animal found by the police or dog warden will be scanned for a chip. The unique number will be registered to your address, helping to reunite you and your beloved pet. Vets can microchip or Lindsay Mclusky (Badingham) or Martlesham Animal Centre. POLICE APPEAL - CAR THEFTS Recent thefts from cars and vans have led to police warning all drivers not to leave valuable items in their vehicles! In early April thieves targeted vehicles in Rushmere and Woodbridge taking a sat-nav, camcorder, cash, cards and cigarettes. 14 REPLICA GUN Officers on patrol arrested a 17 year old boy on suspicion of possession of cannabis with intent to supply and possession of an imitation firearm. His rucksack contained a replica gun, a knife and a quantity of cannabis. Another rucksack, found later, contained several bags of cannabis, a wallet, grinder, electric scales, phones and weapons. Please do not carry replica guns! CRATFIELD PARCEL THEFT a parcel (containing toothpaste) was stolen from a wooden mail box outside a home at Bell Green at around 11am on April 7th, Police want to trace a slim, white man mid 30s - 40s, around 5'9" tall with short dark hair with a floppy fringe with white grey streak in it. He called at an address around that time claiming to be a meter reader. If anyone was passing please call PC893 Warne at Suffolk Police 101 quote LE/14/ MILLION FRAUD Two Suffolk men, amongst a gang of 5, defrauded 17,300 victims across the UK by running a network of bogus companies, duping people into signing up for nonexistent escort work or fake debt elimination schemes. Colin Samuels, 62 of Redgrave, was jailed for 5 ½ yrs and ordered to pay back 37,000 to fraud victims... good news for once! Finally, I would like to thank my two grandsons on giving me a wonderful description of a man behaving suspiciously in Badingham! Police were most impressed when I phoned them they were out looking for the man on 22nd April, Sonja

23 THE JOHNSTONE TWINS & MRS DORIS ZINKEISEN Reading the Feb-March Echo brought back happy memories of the "The Artists", thank you Karen for the write up. The Johnstone Twins always supported the village in many ways, we were grateful for their support and enjoyed having them in our midst and were much loved by everyone. Many of our Badingham residents will remember how the village celebrated the Queen s Silver Jubilee on the 26th July 1978, at the Old Rectory Park (by kind permission of General and the Hon. Mrs Miller). This was a great celebration. We had a large marquee, hired for the entertainment with a hard floor for dancing. Back then we all joined in - bingo for the senior citizens, games for the children including best decorated bicycle. A wonderfully yummy hog roast (full size pig) was cooked on a spit with people taking turns on the cooking. Roast turkey and chicken were also served; all supplied and cooked by the villagers. During the afternoon a big cake made by Janet and Anne (the Johnstone Twins) was served. It was beautifully cooked and iced with the Union Flag... I can see it now! The day ended with a beacon lit in the park and fireworks. Now to their Mother, a very quiet and unassuming lady who too was a great artist and exhibited her paintings all over the place. You may not know that Doris illustrated the first "Medical Books" for Students - my brother-in-law, Dr John Powley told me he still has one, which he treasures. One can go on about this remarkable family and how lucky we were to have had them in of our midst of our big happy family of Badingham.
