3 Notes from the Editor Is New Year a good time for tough resolutions and deprivations? No, far better to start 2016 by giving yourself a pat on the back. Thanks to everyone who has given their time and/or muscle to support our community. There are lots of ways you can lend a hand - you will find contact details throughout this magazine. A team of people give their time to put the Echo together and deliver it to your door. Thanks too to the regular contributors who help fill the pages of the Echo. If you have a memories, recommendations or a story you think our readers might like to share, please get in touch. Good luck to the team as they open the doors of the new Pop-Up Shop and Café - I look forward to visiting soon. The Church Christmas Coffee Morning was a good chance for a catch-up with neighbours - and I came home with a beautifully wrapped Tombola prize ready to open on Christmas Day! At the Village Hall AGM plans were presented to extend and partition the Hall to provide a dedicated area for Playschool, making the main Hall available for other groups during the week. Much fundraising will be needed - your ideas will be welcomed. Hope to see you on one of the events listed in our Diary - Best Wishes and Good Health for 2016, Tish The ECHO is produced for the villagers of Badingham by the Badingham Community Council Registered Charity No The Editor s decision on whether or where to place material is final. While every effort is made to check information published, the BCC does not endorse the accuracy or reliability of any article or advert within the magazine. E.O.E. 3

4 BADINGHAM How this year seems to be flying by! Senior Citizens Lunches The BCC funded a lunch at the White Horse Pub for our more senior residents of Badingham. The first in September was attended by 27 people and in October 13 people came. There was a great deal of chatter, laughter and meeting of friends, old and new. The BCC were thrilled at the response to this new initiative. Many, many thanks to Mark & Lisa who provided fantastic food on both occasions. The BCC have received many words of thanks such as: an excellent meal in good company ~ a generous gesture ~ delicious lunch ~ a much appreciated lunch with fellow locals in such a friendly, informal occasion ~ we appreciate the effort you (the BCC) give to keep us pensioners happy it s working Seasonal Gifts The BCC will be delivering Gifts to all who have let me know they are these gifts are always greatly appreciated by the recipients. If you ve just had a birthday, it s not too late to be added to the list - just give me a call. Annual Meeting On Thu 12th Nov the BCC held their AGM in the Village Hall. This year the meeting was well attended. Ideas, suggestions and questions were put to the BCC - some could be addressed at the meeting, others the BCC will take on board and discuss at future committee meetings. Thank you to everyone who attended - the meeting ended with wine and nibbles. 5 Send us your news, thanks and anything you want to get off your chest! Regarding the dog mess in the area, I live down Mill Road and we are still seeing dog mess on the grass verges and also on the footpaths through the fields. We have two dogs and are worried that all dog walkers will be thought of as letting their dogs mess anywhere. Debbie & Duncan, Millmead House Geoff James has asked me to thank all the people who lent a hand to move him about the pub at the BCC Lunch THE MAYPOLE CLUB - BIRTHDAY PARTY A Great Big Thank you to Gillian and Mandy, for such enjoyable evening with fun and laughter with the Sizewell Gap members. The dancing proved exhausting and muddles at times, everyone got there in the end! Thank you to all the Members for the lovely food. Love Sonja xx Yesteryear memories Tanya is looking for photos of Badingham shops from days gone by. Can you help? Rita has passed on a photo of the last shop which closed - the one by the church. Tanya also has a photo of Watson s shop beside the Village Hall. Does anyone any have photos of other shops - up at the Bowling Green and by Pound Corner? What are your memories of the shops? Speaking for myself, I was always more than a little scared of Mrs Desborough! 5

8 Enterprise Badingham - End of Year Report Pop Up Community Shop Huge thank you to every one for donating items and time towards the setting up of the Pop Up Community Shop, at Carters Lodge, Low Street. Karen, Sue and myself were delighted with such great offers and support. It s been such a pleasure to meet new villagers and get busy together on what we hope will be a useful and helpful asset for our village community. We have had fun and games getting the Pop Up ready for the 17th November and by the time villagers read this article we would have completed the trial Pop Up. We very much hope to be in a position to start developing the permanent shop with the view to open in the New Year. We are delighted to announce that the shop has been selected for being supported by our Local Councillor s (Carol Poulter) Community Enabling Grant. Carol came along to listen and learn more about our ideas for the Community Shop and has been of great encouragement to us. This we are very grateful for and having some of the grant will enable this project to get off the ground. I hope that as many villagers as possible have visited the shop and all had a chance to offer suggestions for the permanent shop and had a chance to try some of the delights on offer. Please do keep an eye on the web site and further leaflets through your doors for news on the opening of the permanent shop. Macmillan Coffee Morning We are delighted to say we raised over the morning, thank you to all that came along and supported this very worthwhile charity. A great morning eating cakes, drinking tea and coffee and having a go at the raffle! We hope to have the next one in 2016 at Badingham Community Shop, at Carters Lodge. Rix Oil Syndicate We are delighted to say this raised this year which has directly put into assisting in developing the Community Shop. Big thank you to all that take part in buying their fuel this way. Badingham Community Gardens Well, this has been a blooming good year! With half a freezer full of blackcurrants, plenty of raspberries and vegetables. The blackcurrants are being turned into jam and sold to raise funds for the shop start up. The rosehips from the edible hedge turned into syrup. Plenty of fun has been had with plenty of families and individuals enjoying the peace and pleasures of gardening in these gardens. We even managed to get some of the flowers in the cut flowers boarders into our Church this year! If any villager wishes to join us, we still have space to create a few more plots and you would be very welcome. 8

9 Badingham Bees The bees are happy, we have sold some honey this year! The bees have been busy, we are building up the colonies and hoping to increase production next year and supply the village community shop. Hoping that 2016 will see the Shop up and running on a regular bases and that our community continues going from strength to strength. Now darker nights are upon us we would like to encourage everyone to think about simple measures of deterring crime. Please help yourselves by not advertising that your homes are empty and open to light fingers (thieves). Don t leave your home in darkness use lights and radios on timers, or just leave lights on. 25 Montpellier to Hillman on Foot by Brian Garratt Continuing Brian Garratt s memoir of his walk (aged 67) across France in 2004 in an attempt to reach Hillman - a German fortification captured by the Suffolk Regiment on D-Day - for the 60th anniversary. Day 7 Started walking at 9.00 with the prospect of an easy walk ahead, the day off had helped enormously so in spite of the patching up, things were looking good again. Reached Grand Combe at a nice enough little town but because of the name you expect so much more. Unfortunately there was no campsite so it was another hotel. Day 8 Started walking at 8.00 through nice countryside and reached Genolhac at 2.00, only to find the campsite not yet open, so why are all the signs up! I do not need an unnecessary detour. I go to a hotel and am given a one room annexe which looks fine. I later find that I have never encountered such a cold bed - and I am used to camping on the ground! I woke up at 2.00 in the morning, shivering from head to foot. I bet no one had used this bed since the previous holiday season and it had never been aired. I climbed out, put all my clothes on and climbed back in. Why did I not get my sleeping bag out of the rucksack and lay it on the top? I guess my brain must still have been asleep. Day 9 At 7.00 I walked across to the hotel only to find it shut. Now when anything in France is shut it is not just shut, it is also shuttered, barred and bolted at every door and window - a sort of Fort Knox mentality. So, standing in the telephone kiosk opposite, I rang the number plastered across the front of this hotel, and rang and rang. My passport was in there, and having lost one once on a trip to Amsterdam I was not prepared to lose a second one. At 8.30 someone sauntered up to the hotel and opened the door and I was away - reaching Villefort at for a large 'plat de jour'. This is great walking country all round here and is certainly worth a couple of weeks holiday by itself. I walked on, high above the lake to reach Prevencheres at Another campsite not yet open - pity, so it s more B and B. Day 10 Started walking at 8.30 climbing very steeply, it begins to snow as I get higher, this carries on for the rest of the day. I am aiming for a place 18 km away, reaching this at only to find a very rundown village. The only person in sight was a woman standing in the doorway of a dilapidated hotel, I ask the way 25

26 to the campsite and the woman without seemingly moving a muscle replies there is no campsite. Is the hotel open? No. A cup of coffee? No. A glass of water? The woman shrugs. This is the only movement she has made. I walk on, the name of this place - Luc! On reaching Langogne, after another 12 km, there are hotels on each side of the road with 'For sale' notices on them. I walk to the centre and get the best hotel in town, possibly not the best economic choice, but I don't care. Day 11 Buy a thicker shirt at the market as I am now at a much higher altitude. Start walking at 9.30 and reach a fishing lodge at Chapearoux This I had booked by telephone 25 km ahead complete with ETA, all in French of course, pretty clever I thought! Later, dinner consisted of five courses; a tasty soup to start with, followed by a very good mushroom pie on a bed of salad, but I was not prepared for what came next: I have never seen such an awful piece of meat, it looked like something that had been squashed on the road and then scraped up and carefully placed in the centre of my plate, I nibbled at the vegetables around the outside before they became soaked in blood but to have eaten any of the rest would have brought a good meal straight up again. Day 12 I had some high remote countryside ahead today, my landlady sent me off with a delicious packed lunch. She had been so kind and helpful throughout and thankfully had not been upset by my rejection of the main course at the previous evening s meal. I am sure this had been a special delicacy and should have been treated as such. Setting off at 8.30 on another very steep climb, I reached the high ground after an hour or so with distant views in all directions. Very good walking country again, arriving at Saugues at Day 13 Another Monday. Heaven help anyone who needs anything today. France is shut on Mondays, in fact I don't believe anyone even gets up - I am sure they all sleep through until Tuesday. Started walking at 8.30, a nice stop at St. Arcons d Allier, reaching Langeac at Camping again - that's better! Orderly green shoots are a great sight a diversion from gloomy news as farm prices continue to tumble. Christmas is on hold! One load of field beans has been sold for human consumption which gives a premium over the other which will go for animal feed. One field had a much better start and was less under attack from the pheasants, pigeons and rooks. You may notice all the beans, knocked out when we tried to harvest, coming up in that field of wheat and how the birds are not in the slightest bit interested in eating them now! We have some new chickens but only two have decided to start laying. We thought they were hasty starters but, three weeks on, the others are still dragging their feet The older ones were very excited when they had the remains of the pumpkin at Halloween. Now they are eating the peelings from the windfall apples. Their mash must be tasty, because the dogs are always trying to stick their heads in the bucket, but the hens do like something different to peck at - just like those pesky pheasants. 29

32 Dr Dan Poulter MP Member of Parliament for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich Should we legalise cannabis? Over the last few months, a new system has been introduced to allow members of the public to petition Parliament by e-petition. Under this new system a petition with more than 100,000 electronic signatures may be put forward for debate in the House of Commons and I was recently pleased to have the opportunity to contribute to one of these debates on the controversial subject of the legalisation of cannabis. As an NHS doctor working in mental health, I am unable to support the legalisation of cannabis not only because of my medical experience but also on the evidence evaluated by the Royal College of Psychiatrists which outlines both the mental and physical health problems associated with cannabis use. Although there is currently a de facto decriminalisation of the possession of cannabis in many parts of the country, the legalisation of cannabis is a very different matter to decriminalisation as legalisation would provide a legitimacy to the supply of a substance which we know to be physically and mentally harmful. The Royal College of Psychiatrists has made clear the strong link between cannabis use and poor mental health, especially in young people. A study of 1600 Australian schoolchildren aged 14 to 15 found that children who use cannabis regularly have a significantly higher risk of depression than nonusers. Adolescents who used cannabis daily were five times more likely to develop depression and anxiety in later life. Contact me on or 32 There is also growing evidence of a link between cannabis and physical health problems. New research has found that the cannabis plant contains cancer causing materials that can damage peoples lungs. In this country we have long taken measures to discourage cigarette smoking and it would be inconsistent to legalise the supply of cannabis given the increasing evidence of the harm it causes to physical health. However, an important issue that I raised in the debate is the growing evidence from around the world which supports the use of cannabis and cannabis products in the treatment of people with chronic pain and its medicinal use for palliative care. I believe that there is a case to review the law to better facilitate the research and use of cannabis for medicinal purposes, but this is quite a different matter to supporting the legalisation of the drug. I valued the opportunity to bring my medical knowledge and experience to bear in this important Parliamentary debate, and it is important to remember that most countries in the world have not legalised cannabis. I remain unconvinced that l egalising the supply of, and access to, a substance that is harmful to both physical and mental health would be a good thing for people in Suffolk or for this country. I should like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a happy Christmas and a harmonious and healthy New Year. daniel.poulter.mp@parliament.uk
