1 Cedar Valley Woodworkers Cedar Valley Woodworkers Association Volume XX Issue { January 2019 Steve Presidents Corner.Views from a nearly new member: My involvement started several years ago over some Village Inn coffee and pie, with Jim Waring and his wife, Fran. Jim and I exchanged stories about wood working projects. His were recent. Mine were from the past, due to my then work load. Jim invited me to the next meeting and I came and joined as a spectator during my first year. Retirement in 2016 has allowed more time for involvement. Here are a few observations: CVWA is a formal organization, with a very informal structure. Steve Crouse patterns, tool reviews Visits to outside businesses: saw mills, Jerald Sulky, Tech Works (Makers Space), etc. An internal network to buy/sell used tools and excess wood An opportunity to borrow tools As I reviewed past newsletters, I believe the CVWA is 20 years old. During that time it has grown from a few members to now ~103 members. There are few local organizations that can claim such growth. I find I have joined a great organization and it is a great place to expand my circle of friends. Being involved with the Cedar Valley Woodworkers Association adds to the quality of my life. 3 Page 3. CVWA- Christmas Party (2018) Report Show (over all categories) was presented to Milo Mead, a new member in 2018, for his fretwork of a Cathedral (and his many other creations). It took many hands to bring about a very successful and joyful Christmas Party for Decorations and setup-was principally executed by Dennis & Sarah Gilroy, along with extensive help from Jerry & JoEllen Krug, assisted by Gene Knief. Dave Turner and Reed Craft set up the tool table display. D. Gilroy, J. Krug & D. Turner set up, arranged & displayed (assembled) the center pieces. Gene Knief made the arrangements for ordering the poinsettia, delivering them safe & unharmed by the weather in time for the Party. A special thanks goes to Terry Duckworth. He made the free-standing carved nativity gifts to spouses, with the help of Dave Regenold s professional finishing. Bob Hewlitt was charged with collating the various tickets, based on attendance, program participation making sure everyone had the correct number raffle tickets. Terry Burds headed up the poinsettia table, sign-in for spouses and significant other. Reed craft, treasurer, received early membership due s payments, as well as organizing the Show-n- Tells eight Category display sections & signage. Dave Turner made sure all Show-n-Tell projects were displayed in the appropriate category, given a number ( # ) secretly identifying the owner of the wood project to be voted on by members and spouses. Don Gurney (ever faithful and never spills a drop) made sure there was coffee, while Barb Gurney kicked off the Sign-up Sheet for Treats for Behind the scenes, Steve Robb, Secretary, assisted by D. Turner made sure letters to the spouse and significant other were sent out inviting them to the Christmas Party. Steve Crouse collected pictures from John Hix, the Club s photographer, & put them into a loop to be shown on the overhead throughout the evening, showcasing the projects and other happenings throughout the past years. Contained within the eight Categories were 35 projects registered to be voted on (There were many more objects, but were lumped together as one unit.). One new category was added to include machined carving. Historically, the seven categories have included, Furniture, Scroll Saw (fretwork), Intarsia, Turning, Carving, Toys, and Misc. All Categories had an entry. Tabulating the ballots was accomplished by Reed Craft, Gene Knief and Dave Turner The traveling Plaque (for the year) winner of Best-of- New in the Bring a new project to Show-n-Tell Encouragement drawing went to Pete Cullum. Designed as a raffle drawing, a number of tickets was entered into a drawing based on the numbers of projects brought to the Club s Show-n-Tell throughout the year. A Gift Card was presented to the winner of the drawing. President Jack Ackerman designed and funded the initiative. Again, behind the scene, Secretary Steve Robb tracked the total of the participants in this new endeavor. A plaque was presented to the Club s outgoing president, Jack Ackerman, by the incoming president, Steve Crouse. The plaque was made by Terry Duckworth. President Jack Ackerman lead the charge for the evening, with recognition by thanking the many Board members for their help in making the Christmas Event come together. Finally, the number in attendance, both members and their spouses or significant other, came to one hundred thirteen people. The room was filled, as were all of the serving tables, packed with food of infinite variety.
