The opportunity developed after contacting them about their ability to make toys for hospitalized children. I updated my power point and presented my stairway material lift. Many of you saw that at our August 2017 meeting. Wayne Watson (Vice President of the SLWG) and his wife, hosted Theresa and me for 4 nights. In addition to presenting, we saw some of the sights in St. Louis. Those included the Gateway Arch, the historic courthouse and of course the Budweiser Brewery tour. We also learned about the SLWG. Here are some details. They have approximately 300 members About 100 attended the 21 March meeting. SLWG WORK SHOP We were able to visit their woodworking shop. It is located in the Faust Park, located at Olive Blvd, Chesterfield, MO. The shop is located in a renovated farm building (it was a large stucco chicken house Steve Crouse now park property). It was originally a part of a large estate. St. Louis County Parks Departments, let the SLWG, renovate the building. The park also supplies electricity, etc., in trade for maintenance / construction, by the SLWG. While we were there, they had copied a antique wooden commode, and made a clone for public display in another house in the park s historic village. Selected club members volunteer to open the club shop on scheduled times. They also have training sessions, but the shop size limits training to about 6 students. Tools in the shop are a combination of club purchased or donated. The shop offers, social opportunities, as well as access to larger and specialized tools. CLUB STRUCTURE AND MEETINGS Basic membership to the club is $40 annually. Membership with access to the woodshop is $75. The monthly Thursday night club meeting has some similarity to ours. The member meetings are held at the Moolah Shrine, located at Fee Fee Rd, St. Louis, MO During the March meeting, they were recruiting new board members, and nominated members will be voted on in May. Board meetings are held at a restaurant. They also have an annual club picnic. They pay to have a special guest speaker once per year. Sorry it was not me. This is a famous woodworker person. The SLWG has a library of books, that

2 Page 2 are kept at the meeting location. The boxes of books are placed on tables and can be checked out by members. They do not do displays of member projects at every meeting.

This meeting had none. April was to be a member project display night. No treats or beverages were offered. Announcements: Stephen Crouse: Next Board Meeting is 19 March 2019 at Dave Turner s home, 430 Prospect Blvd., Waterloo, IA at 7 PM. All members are welcome to attend. Presented Kevin Gade with his Best Turning Award that he won at the 2018 Christmas Party. Free Wood that Dave Turner brought from Wood Components Technology. Pete Murphy has a 26 band saw for sale. Please pay your dues haven t been paid. The CVWA Newsletter is online at cedarvalleywoodworkers.com/newsletters/ Jim Wikle is the person who writes our newsletter and to encourage all of us to read the newsletter, he has is going to place a clue somewhere in the newsletter. If you find it, when you check-in at the next meeting there will be a bucket, along with sheets of paper for you to write down your name and the clue. A winner s name will be drawn from the bucket and awarded a prize. Dave Turner: Discounts, with some restrictions, are available to our membership from our sponsors. Some of the sponsors, i.e. Hartville Tool and Klingspore need to have a listing of our membership to be able to give you the discount. We will be passing around a listing with your names on It and if you agree to give those companies permission to send you their catalogs and give you the discount on your order, place your initials behind your name. Motion to approve the Minutes was made by Dave Turner. 2 nd by Dennis Gilroy. Approved. Reed also reported that he spoke with the director of the Waterloo Center for the Arts and was told that they are planning to go back from a calendar year to a physical year and that he will make sure that a new contract, for the 1 st half of the year, is sent shortly. Reed also said that in July, we will another contract for the upcoming year. Reed submitted an invoice for ink and postage, total of $ Motion to approve was made by Jim Wikle. 2 nd by Steve Robb. Approved. Reed then reported that he has mailed in our Annual Report.

Meeting Programs: April: Pyrography by Joan (Joni) Overhouse of Dubuque, IA, Midwest Wood Art, Due to distance from home, Joni s presentation will be at the beginning of the meeting. Motion to pay $40 for gas was made by Dave Turner. 2 nd by Steve Robb. Approved. At that point, the new member will be allowed to sell their tools &/or wood to the general membership for the balance of the year. They goods will be listed in the monthly CVWA newsletter and a mass will be sent out to the general membership. 2 nd by Jim Wikle. Approved. Membership We have 86 paid members and members that currently have not paid their 2019 dues. Dave Turner will telephone the 17 members and pull their nametags from the nametag board. Old Business: Prize for Clue drawing Sanding block & Tape Measurer Newsletter Deadline: 27 March 2019 Motion to Adjourn: 7:55 PM Respectfully Submitted, Steve Robb, Secretary Members, I have arranged a Tour for the month of May (Two shops!). 1.The Tour will be a trip to Dubuque, IA to the shop of Lyndal Anthony. You may recall he presented our March Program, highlighting his turnings using a lathe. It was both informative and educational. From tool positioning and angle of cut, to gouge and knife sharpening angles, he offered a plethora of hints for safety and time savings. He teaches classes to other Wood Clubs. 2. We will tour Joan Overhouse s shop Our April Program speaker. Her artistic focus is a specialty known as Pyrography wood burning She creates 'silhouettes' on wood.
