2 ABOUT THE VALENTINE For more than 100 years, the Valen ne has told the story of Richmond through exhibi ons, city tours, special events, research opportuni es, interac ve history programs and guided tours of the 1812 Wickham House. With a renowned costume and tex le collec on, thousands of objects and more than one million photographs, the Valen ne is commi ed to preserving Richmond s history and serving as a resource for visitors and residents. Hours Tuesday-Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Closed on Mondays and the following holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year s Day, Mar n Luther King, Jr. Day and Presidents Day. Open on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day. Admission Prices* Admission includes self-guided access to exhibi on galleries and the Edward V. Valen ne Sculpture Studio, as well as a guided tour of the 1812 Wickham House. 3 CURRENT AND UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS This is Richmond, Virginia What defines a city? Physical boundaries? People? Economy? Government? Shared beliefs? Richmond is defined by all of these concepts. Together, they create this unique place we call Richmond, Virginia. Richmond is also defined by ar facts, which convey meaning and tell stories. Collec vely these ar facts help to document the community s larger history through five themes Wickham House A Na onal Historic Landmark, the home allows guests to explore aspects of life in the early 19th century. The property was purchased by Mann S. Valen ne II and in 1898 became the first home of the Valen ne Museum. A guided tour of the 1812 Wickham House is included with admission. Edward V. Valen ne Sculpture Studio A prominent sculptor, Valen ne s works include the Recumbent Lee statue and the statue of Thomas Jefferson at The Jefferson Hotel. A visit to his restored studio offers a glimpse into the mind of the ar st. Crea ng History: The Valen ne Family and the Crea on of a Museum This exhibi on explores the Valen ne family s ar fact collec ng, the Valen ne s Meat Juice business, and the ways in which interpreta on of Richmond s history has evolved. Signs of the Times The Valen ne s collec on of neon signs from Richmond businesses illustrates commercial growth and adver sing trends. We encourage you to come by a er dusk to see them lit up! The Valen ne First Freedom Center The Valen ne First Freedom Center and monument sit where the Virginia General Assembly adopted Thomas Jefferson s Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom on January 16, 1786 and then signed it into law on January 19. The statute was the first law of absolute religious freedom enacted by the United States and served as a template for the religion clauses of the First Amendment. Located at 14 South 14th Street in historic Shockoe Bo om. One Love: LGBT Families December 1, 2016 September 4, 2017 This exhibi on ques ons the tradi onal defini on of a family through portraits of LGBT families in the Richmond region. Our Hearts On Our Sleeves April 28, January 28, 2018 The fashion and fiber arts play an important role in Richmond s crea ve community, enlivening Richmond s streets, shops, galleries, museums, and performance spaces. Drawing on the Valen ne s extensive collec on of historic and contemporary costume and tex les, Our Hearts On Our Sleeves celebrates Richmond s devo on to crea ve expression. Nuestras Historias: La nos in Richmond July 27, 2017 April 15, 2018 There are approximately 100,000 La nos in the Richmond metropolitan area who represent a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. As La nos immigrate to Richmond, they establish permanent es to their new home and begin to transform its culture. Virginia Jazz: The Early Years September 19, 2017 April 30, 2018 This exhibi on created by Richmond Jazz Society illuminates Virginians who made significant contribu ons to the development of Jazz as an American art form from the early rhythms of the music s birth at the turn of the 20th century to the mul faceted vibra ons leading to the music s modern sound. 6 CITY CENTER WALKS The Valen ne presents a walking tour of downtown Richmond, including the Virginia State Capitol grounds and Court End neighborhood. Discover Richmond s history from its beginnings to present day, exploring St. Paul s Episcopal Church, Old City Hall, the Egyp an Building and the White House of the Confederacy. This season our tour includes an exclusive look inside historic Monumental Church! Tours begin at the Richmond Visitor Center at 405 North 3rd Street and end at the Valen ne, 1015 East Clay Street. Established in 1889 as an early streetcar suburb, Barton Heights originally was part of Henrico County and is now a part of the City of Richmond. 14 SEPTEMBER JACKSON WARD In the years following the Civil War, Jackson Ward became the largest African- American community in Richmond and a na onally-important center of African-American economic and cultural ac vity. Join us to celebrate the rich history of this Richmond neighborhood.
