1 MCEP Washington DC Trip May 18 to 22, 2016 MCEP has created a tour that meets individual needs in a group setting. What is included: Air by Delta Hotel and breakfast Accompanied Guide Entrance fees where needed Complementary parking at MCEP Office and transportation to and from Metro airport What is not included: Transportation in DC will be by Metro, cab, bus and walking. Participants should be able to walk and maneuver subways or be willing to take a cab and meet the group. What is not included: Food We will have planned restaurants but your menu choice or if you join us is your decision. DC transit We do have a planned route to our destination and will use the above mentioned transit modes but you may meet us by using a different mode if desired. Housing The group will stay together but if you would rather find your own accommodation you may just join us just for the tour. Our suggested hotel costs will be deducted from your bill. What to wear. We will be very causal. Dress comfortably according to the weather. Good walking shoes. You may meet us directly at the airport if that is more convenient. Check-in for tours is in the Robert H. Smith Visitor Education Center, the first building on the left after you enter Eagle Gate. Entrance: Visitors to President Lincoln s Cottage are required to enter the campus through Eagle Gate, located at the intersection of Rock Creek Church Road NW and Upshur Street NW. The street address is approximately 140 Rock Creek Church Road, NW, Washington D.C NOTE: The 3700 North Capitol Street address is for mailing purposes only and is not an entrance. Dinner Monuments at Night World War II, Vietnam, Lincoln, Korea, King, FDR and Jefferson. This is a walking tour that the group or individuals can decide to do all of or pick the ones they wish. You can decide that day, with consideration to weather, how you are feeling what you will do. There are modes of transit to limit walking.

Arrive 11:30 am 12:45 pm Delta #2788 for Detroit 2:22 pm Arrive Detroit Meet by MCEP van for return to MCEP Office Background on spots Lincoln Cottage The historic Cottage, built in the Gothic revival style, was constructed from 1842 to 1843 as the home of George Washington Riggs, who went on to establish the Riggs National Bank in Washington, D.C. Lincoln lived in the cottage June to November 1862 through 1864 and during the first summer living there, Lincoln drafted the preliminary draft of the Emancipation Proclamation. Mary Todd Lincoln fondly recalled the campus; in 1865, she wrote, "How dearly I loved the Soldiers' Home." Poet Walt Whitman, who was living on Vermont Avenue near the White House in 1863, often saw the president riding to or from Soldiers' Home. He wrote in The New York Times, "Mr. LINCOLN generally rides a good-sized easy-going gray horse, is dressed in plain black, somewhat rusty and dusty; wears a black stiff hat, and looks about as ordinary in attire, &c., as the commonest man...i saw very plainly the President's dark brown face, with the deep cut lines, the eyes, &c., always to me with a deep latent sadness in the

Whitman quoted this article in his 1876 book Memoranda During the War, adding the phrase: "We have got so that we always exchange bows, and very cordial ones."[2] President Abraham Lincoln and family resided seasonally on the grounds of the Soldiers' Home to escape the heat and political pressure of downtown Washington, as did President James Buchanan ( ) before him. President Lincoln's Cottage also served as the Summer White House for Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes ( ) and Chester A. Arthur ( ).[1] Frederick Douglas House The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site Administered by the National Park Service, is located at 1411 W St., SE in Anacostia, a neighborhood east of the Anacostia River in Southeast Washington, D.C.. Established in 1988 as a National Historic Site, the site preserves the home and estate of Frederick Douglass, one of the most prominent African Americans of the 19th century. Douglass lived in this house, which he named Cedar Hill, from 1877 until his death in Perched high on a hilltop, the site also offers a sweeping view of the U.S. Capitol and the Washington D.C. skyline. Arlington House The Robert E. Lee Memorial honors Lee's military and public leadership in pre- and post-civil War America. Congress designated the memorial to recognize that "the desire and hope of Robert E. Lee for peace and unity within our Nation has come to pass." From the portico you can contemplate our nation's fate as you gaze across the river that once divided us. Folger Shakespeare Library The Folger Shakespeare Library is an independent research library on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., in the United States. It has the world's largest collection of the printed works of William Shakespeare, and is a primary repository for rare materials from the early modern period ( ). The library was established by Henry Clay Folger in association with his wife, Emily Jordan Folger. It opened in 1932, two years after his death. The library offers advanced scholarly programs and national outreach to K 12 classroom teachers on Shakespeare education. Other performances and events at the Folger include the award-winning Folger Theatre, which produces Shakespeare-inspired theater; Folger Consort, the early-music ensemble-in-residence; the O.B. Hardison Poetry Series; the PEN/Faulkner Reading Series; and numerous other exhibits, seminars, talks and lectures, and family programs. It also has several publications, including the Folger Library editions of Shakespeare's plays, the journal Shakespeare Quarterly, the teacher resource books Shakespeare Set Free, and catalogs of exhibitions. The Folger is also a leader in methods of preserving rare materials. The library is privately endowed and administered by the Trustees of Amherst College. The library building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

5 Pan American Union Building The Pan American Union Building is the headquarters for the Organization of American States. It is located at 17th Street N.W. between C Street N.W. and Constitution Avenue, Northwest, Washington, D.C.[1] The cornerstone was laid on May 11, 1908, by Theodore Roosevelt, Elihu Root, and Andrew Carnegie,[2] and the building was dedicated on April 26, 1910.[3] In 1919, the initial meeting of the International Labour Organization was held in the building,[4] and in 1921, the Washington Naval Conference was held there. In 1969, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
