3 Admissions and Visa process 1 When you apply to study for an English course with us at Anglia Ruskin there are a number of conditions you will need to meet. This section explains all of these conditions as well as the visa application process. We would advise that you read this section very carefully to ensure you follow the right process so you can attend your English language course. Once you have met all the conditions for your offer you will then be able to book your accommodation. We strongly recommend that you organise your accommodation before you arrive in the UK. Admissions - Your Offer When you apply to study an English Language programme at Anglia Ruskin you will initially be made a conditional offer. This means we have a place for you to study English with us but we still require some further documents and the payment of a deposit from you. It is important that you send these documents so we can issue you with an unconditional offer. Once you have been made an unconditional offer we will be able to issue your CAS to enable you to apply for your visa and reserve your university accommodation. Visa Information Pre-sessional English course If you are an international student coming to study in the UK and have applied to do a pre-sessional English course at Anglia Ruskin you will be required to enter the UK under the Tier 4 - (General) Student immigration route. Please note: We do not recommend that you apply for a short term study visa to enter onto a pre-sessional course. Although it may cover the length of your first course, you will not be able to renew this visa or switch to Tier 4 (General) Student in the UK and this could cause problems for transfer onto a future course. English with University Studies (EUS) If you are applying for an EUS course you will be able to apply for a short term study visa. However if you intend to remain in the UK to continue your academic studies it may be advisable to enter the UK under the Tier 4 - (General) Student immigration route. If you are an EU national (citizen) or from Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland or Switzerland you can enter the UK freely and you will have no restrictions on the length of time you can stay in the UK. You will need to produce a valid passport, national identity card or travel document at immigration control at the port, airport or at the Eurostar station. Provided that your documents are in order you should pass through with ease; your passport will not be stamped. If you are from any other region, we would advise you to check with your local British High Commission or Embassy on whether you need a visa. Applying for a Visa Tier 4 (General) Student visa Once you have met the conditions of your offer to study at Anglia Ruskin, your offer will be made unconditional and you will be issued with a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). Your CAS will only be issued to you once you have satisfied the 2

4 Admissions and Visa process 1 conditions both academic and financial in your conditional offer . Please note your CAS number is valid for six months only. You cannot apply for your Tier 4 visa more than three months before your course is due to start. Depending on which country you come from you may also need to take a TB test before you apply. Please see the website for more information As part of the Tier 4 (General) application: you are also required to provide your biometrics (your facial photograph and fingerprints) and you may be required to attend an interview to discuss your chosen studies in the UK. Preparing to apply for your visa It is important that you have all the relevant documents to enter the UK. Please check that you have a valid passport. Once you have been issued a CAS it is very important keep this document safe as you will need to submit it with your visa application to study in the UK. As part of your visa application you will be expected to show that you are able fund your living and studying expenses, whilst in the UK. The amount you need to cover your studying and living expenses will be included in the unconditional offer we send you. More importantly you need to make sure that you apply for your visa as early as possible as the visa application can take up to four weeks or more in some countries. Important Tips for applying for Tier 4 Please check you have: An up-to -date passport Keep your CAS safe Check you have the available funds for your pre-sessional and academic course Apply early for your visa Check if you need to take a TB test Important Please make sure you know when your visa is due to expire. It is important that you plan to renew your visa in plenty of time. If you do not renew in time you will face great difficulties and it is unlikely we will be able to help. Need more help applying for a Tier 4 visa? You can download a Tier 4 Visa Guide and view a short video presentation at: Collecting your Biometric Residency Permit (BRP) Card The UK Government has changed the way that it issues permission for people to come to the UK from abroad for more than six months. The vignette in your passport will be issued with a validity of 30 days and you will be required to collect a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), also known as a Biometric Immigration Document (BID), on arrival in the UK. We are pleased to advise that Anglia Ruskin University has been allocated as an 'Alternative Collection Location' (ACL) for your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) when you reach the UK. To ensure your smooth registration process we would advise that you enter the ACL code shown below when you make your visa application on Visa4UK to ensure your BRP is sent to your study location. Chelmsford code: 2HE569 Cambridge code: 2HE574 Your BRP Card will be ready for you to collect on the orientation day of your course. Short Term Study Visa From 24 April 2015 the student visitor visa route has been replaced with a new route known as the short term study visa. This route will allow you to come to the UK if you are 18 years or older, and want to enter: for up to 6 months to study a short course for up to 11 months to study an English language course Extending your visa If you need to extend your Tier 4 General Student Visa while you are in the UK, our International Student Advice Team are here to help you. During your studies we ll run regular workshops to provide you with information on how to renew your visa. Our team will be able to send your visa application on your behalf to a section of the Home Office which specializes in Student Visas. The process should take less time 3

5 Admissions and Visa process 1 than if you post it yourself and we will also deal with any queries on your behalf. If you need a faster decision then you may choose to make an appointment to go in person to a Visa Premium Service Centre. Whichever method you choose, we can usually give advice and check your visa application forms. If you have a short term study visa, you will need to return to your country in order to apply for a Tier 4 General Student visa to continue your studies. Class Attendance and PBS Monitoring Class Attendance This is an intensive programme and at the Language Service Unit (LSU) we expect 100% attendance and 100% completion of all study tasks assigned to you. Points Based System (PBS) for UK Visas From 22nd February 2010, UK universities acting as sponsors of visa applicants under Tier 4 have responsibilities to monitor and report on student attendance on their chosen course. As a student with a TIER 4 visa, you will have also some responsibilities which you must abide by. Responsibility of Anglia Ruskin As a UK university acting as a sponsor we have to; Notify the UKVI of any changes in your course of study and/or study status that impact on your course end date or mode of attendance, ie, periods of absence, withdrawal or continuation beyond normal maximum programme duration Monitor programme engagement/attendance Report non-engagement/attendance to the UKVI As a student with a TIER 4 visa, you are required to: Register at Anglia Ruskin on the course and date specified on your CAS Ensure that your contact information including UK address, and mobile phone records are up-to-date via the evision portal Notify your department of any non-attendance in an appropriate time frame Explain any periods of absence, and submit evidence to support absences Report any relevant changes in circumstances that would be likely to affect your visa situation Provide amended or updated passport and visa documentation Monitoring and Reporting Attendance of students on short courses of less than 12 weeks duration will be monitored weekly; for courses longer than 12 weeks, attendance will be monitored monthly. The University is then required by the UKVI to report to them if: Students fail to register within the time frame of the registration period Students miss a series of engagement points within the reporting period for their course. (Before any student is reported for non-attendance, the department will attempt to contact the student by through their Anglia Ruskin account. However, continued non-attendance would result in students being reported to the UKVI).
