ARRIVING INTO THE UK: IMMIGRATION AND LANDING CARD Upon arrival into the United Kingdom, you must pass through UK Border Control (immigration) and customs before you are permitted to enter the country. As procedure, all non-eu and Swiss nationals are required to complete a landing card. They will be made available from cabin attendants on international flights prior to landing or before reaching immigration. If you do not receive a landing card on your flight, blank ones will also be available for you to complete at immigration. The card asks for the following information: Family and given Names Sex Date of Birth Town and Country of Birth Nationality Occupation Passport Number (and place of issue) Full Contact Address in the UK Length of Stay in the UK Port of Last Departure Arrival Flight Signature Your full contact address in the UK is: University of Cambridge Magdalene College Cambridge, CB3 0AG Your length of Stay in the UK refers to the expiry date on your visa or the date of your departure flight. 1

2 CURRENCY EXCHANGE Please note that local banks in Cambridge may accept only select international currencies (Euros, U.S. dollars, Chinese Renminbi) for currency exchanges into sterling. You are highly advised to make all currency exchanges at the airport or prior to your arrival into the UK to minimise any potential problems upon arrival. Please note that if you wish to withdraw cash from ATMS/Cash Machines, in addition to conversion fees, it is possible that you may also incur additional transaction fees. All major credit and debit cards are accepted in the UK but it is recommended that you inform your bank at home prior to departure of your travel plans, so that your transactions abroad are not affected. PERSONAL EXPENSES You will be provided with a meal allowance on a weekly basis, which is intended to help you cover the cost of meals when the participants of the Summer School do not dine together. This allowance cannot be used for other expenses, and can only be used towards daily sustenance. You will be asked to itemise all expenses that you incur as part of your meal allowance. You are therefore strongly advised to allocate enough personal funds to cover other costs (such as toiletries, clothing, personal travel, etc.) that you may incur for the duration of your stay. REIMBURSEMENT Expense forms will be distributed to all participants upon arrival. Please bring your international bank details and all receipts with you so that these expenses can be processed while you are in Cambridge. If you do not know your bank details for an international transfer of funds, please enquire with you bank ahead of time so that you will have this information available upon your arrival. GETTING TO CAMBRIDGE The most convenient way to get to Cambridge from London Heathrow Airport is via the National Express Coach service. Upon passing through immigration and collection of your bags from baggage carousel area, please exit and follow the signs to the Central Bus Station. The central bus station is located between Terminals 1, 2 and 3 is open 24 hours and is well sign posted. It is a few minutes walk from the terminals via underground walkways. From Terminal 4 and 5 you can catch a free Heathrow Connect of Heathrow Express service to the Central Bus Station. The travel centre at the central bus station opens from 06:00 to 22:30 and provides full details of all services. Coach: National Express The journey time from London Heathrow Airport to Cambridge is approximately three and half hours. Please ask to get off at Drummer Street, as your stop. You can purchase your ticket directly from the driver or pre-book your ticket online at: Depending on the time of the day, a single journey ticket costs between 20 and 35. 3 Terminals 1 and 3 Depart from the Central Bus Station which is only a 5 minute walk from the terminal buildings via the lift, escalators and travelators. Terminal 4 Bay areas 13 and 14 right outside the terminal building at arrivals level. Free transfers to the Central Bus Station and Terminal 5 can be made at stop 7 outside arrivals. Also available: Cambridge (787) Bay 13 For additional information about arrival into London Heathrow Airport, please visit: ARRIVING INTO CAMBRIDGE: MAGDALENE COLLEGE Magdalene (pronounced: maud-lin ) College is one of thirty-one colleges that make up the University of Cambridge. Upon arrival to Cambridge, please make your way to the porter s lodge of Magdalene College (map attached). From Drummer Street, Magdalene College is a short ten minute walk to the college and the area around the colleges is largely pedestrian. The Porter s Lodge is responsible for overseeing the college grounds and ensuring the safety and well being of all members of the college. They are also there to respond to any enquires you may have and direct you around the college and university grounds. They do not carry bags! Upon arrival to the college, the porter on duty will direct you to your room. If you have any queries about your room, please enquire with the porter. ATTIRE Recommended attire is informal/nice casual: The Summer School is informal and we want you to be comfortable. Trousers/jeans, shorts, t-shirts and dresses are adequate for most days. However, you may wish to bring nicer clothes (long trousers and a jacket, nice slacks or a casual dress) for some dinners in the evenings. The weather in the UK can be unpredictable in the summer months, so it may be cold and damp in the mornings and evenings. Expect highs to be around 17 to low 20s celsius with regular wind and rain; lows are expected to be between 12 and 15 degrees. You are advised to bring an umbrella, a jacket, or some heavier outerwear if the weather turns colder. Cambridge is an old city and many of the streets are still cobblestoned or uneven. Comfortable walking shoes are therefore highly advised. 3

4 ITEMS TO BRING Acceptance Letter You may be asked to present this at UK Border Control when you submit your passport and landing card for entry into the UK. Mobile The UK is on a 3G system. Most mobiles that have been unlocked will be compatible in the UK with the purchase of a pay-as-you go SIM card from any of the mobile shops in town. Voltage Please note that the UK is on a 240K voltage. Whilst adapters are available for purchase, they are not readily available, especially from Asia to the UK, so if possible, you are advised to bring these from your home countries. Internet Wireless connection is only available in select locations within the college and university buildings. Wired internet, via an Ethernet cord, will be available in all study bedrooms where you will be accommodated. You are advised to bring an Ethernet cord, although they are also available for purchase from the local shops. SCHEDULE Attached, please find a revised schedule please note that the schedule may be subject to change. WORKING DRAFTS AND PRESENTATIONS All participants will be asked to present and share their research with other participants in the Summer School and the Cambridge academic community on Friday, 12 th July. You will also be expected to produce a written abstract or working draft (of at least 2,500 words) of your research by the conclusion of the Summer School. MEET & GREET An informal Meet & Greet dinner will take place on Wednesday, 26 th June. Please meet at 6.30pm in the Porter s Lodge of Magdalene College. Please note that this is optional but for reservation purposes, please get in touch with me of your intent. ORIENTATION All participants will meet formally for the first time at 9.30am in the Porter s Lodge of Magdalene College on Thursday, 27 th June for a general orientation, which will be followed by lunch. 4
