1 1667 The English acquire New Amsterdam under the Treaty of Breda - rename it New York French & Indian Wars American Revolution Andros Patent, A History of Glen Cove Robert Williams acquires East Island - land that will one day become part of Glen Cove May 24th of this year is noted as the official founding of the community called Musquito Cove Plantations (today s Glen Cove); Joseph Carpenter and four partners obtain title to the land from the indians of the Matinecock Chieftancy The first Grist Mill is established at Musquito Cove New York s Governor Edmund Andros grants the proprietors of the Musquito Cove Plantation official recognition via the Andros Patent Nicholas Simkins purchases West Island; it is not part of the Musquito Cove Plantations, but becomes part of the future Dosoris parcel and later, of Glen Cove 1736 Woolsey Homestead at Dosoris The Reverend Benjamin Woolsey marries Abigail Taylor and retires to the land she inherited from her father, which Woolsey names Dosoris, a corruption of the Latin dos uxuris for wife s dowry 1783 The first district school house is located on the west side of School Street (at the time, still an extension of Glen Street) The hamlet s first United States Post Office is established, and the community s name officially becomes MUSQUITO COVE; Jacob Titus is the first Postmaster The Dutch settle Lower Manhattan and name it New Amsterdam Settlement of Oyster Bay Joseph Carpenter and partners Abia Carpenter, Nathaniel Coles, Robert Coles, and Thomas Townsend are the initial 5 settlers of Musquito Cove ( musketa in the Algonquin Indian language means place of rushes ) In November, Abia Carpenter s interest is transferred to Daniel Coles, and Townsend s interest is transferred to Nicholas Simkins. The settlers build their homes on The Place - the first street The population of Musquito Cove is estimated to be about 250.

2 1837 1st Commercial Use of the Electric Telegraph American Civil War Long Island Sound Steamer GLEN COVE 1829 Steamboat service begins between Glen Cove and New York City with the first steamer, LINNAEUS, operating on the route Pavilion Hotel Residents vote to change the village s name to GLEN COVE William Weeks Pavilion Hotel opens at The Landing in today s Morgan Park; it attracts visitors from New York City The Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department (2nd oldest in Nassau County) is formed, with William M. Weeks as its first Chief Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department Glen Cove Starch Manufacturing Co Glen Cove Starch Manufacturing Co. is established by the Duryea family, becoming the largest business of its kind in the world; it is later renamed the Duryea Cornstarch Manufacturing Company 1861 Glen Cove RR Station at Glen Street 1867 The Long Island Railroad extends tracks from Glen Head to Glen Cove; the first train to depart for Mineola leaves the Glen Cove Station on Glen Street at 6:30 am 1872 At the start of the Civil War a Liberty Pole is raised at the intersection of Cottage Row and School Street (known as Union Square) Historical Marker at Vinny s Island Telegraph service is established between Glen Cove and New York City Glen Cove s Bi-Centennial is celebrated; the village s population is estimated to be Charles A. Dana, Editor of the New York Sun newspaper, purchases West Island in 1873 and builds his summer home there in 1875; the estate-building boom that follows establishes the Gold Coast on Long Island s North Shore.

Ladew & Company on Glen Cove Creek The Fayerweather-Ladew Leatherworks manufacturing opens to make machine belts; its name will be changed to E. R. Ladew & Company in Glen Cove Trolley Glen Cove Railroad Line electric trolley begins operations, running from the steamboat landing to downtown Glen Cove, and on to the Glen Street and Sea Cliff RR stations; it ran until The first City Council is inaugurated at the 1907 Justices Court building Glen Cove becomes a City - Mayor James E. Burns is sworn in along with four new Commissioners The Glen Cove Police Department is formed The permanent Charter of the Glen Cove Public Library was granted The last census shows that Glen Cove has a population of 10,000, making it the largest community in the Town of Oyster Bay; the Glen Cove Echo newspaper promotes incorporation of Glen Cove as a city. The Glen Cove Record-Pilot traces its roots to the City Record The City Charter was approved by the NYS Legislature, and Glen Cove was incorporated as a city and separated from the Town of Oyster Bay. A local referendum, held after the Charter approval, favored becoming a city by a vote of 720 to 713.

Morgan, Jr., Glen Cove s most prominent citizen, dies of a heart attack while vacationing in Boca Grande, Florida The September 1944 hurricane hammered Glen Cove and the North Shore, and sank the USS WARRINGTON, with the loss of crewmember and Glen Cove resident Howard T.
