Great Rivers Country covers 33 counties on the western part of Illinois and like the name suggests, it s home to some really great rivers, including the Mississippi, Illinois, Ohio, Rock, and Kaskaskia Rivers. These are 5 of the 6 longest Rivers in Illinois! In Great Rivers Country you can see wildlife, like bald eagles, learn about farming and agriculture, and discover the history and cultural heritage of our great state. This coloring book is going to take you on a tour of just a few of the attractions in Great Rivers Country. We hope you enjoy your visit to Great Rivers Country! Graphic Artist: Beth Clothier
Located in Elizabeth, Apple River Fort was the location of a battle between approximately 200 Sauk and Fox warriors and local settlers in the Black Hawk War in 1832.
Every year in early May the town of Fulton celebrates its Dutch heritage. During Dutch Days you can watch a parade, view various arts and crafts, take a tour of an authentic Dutch windmill, and see people in traditional Dutch dress.
Ryan s Round Barn can be found north of Kewanee. A highlight of Johnson-Sauk Trail State Recreation Area, the barn was built in 1910 and is 80 feet tall and 85 feet in diameter.
Visit the Quad City Botanical Center and see the Garden Train Railway, Scrambled Alphabet Garden, a natural prairie like those that used to cover much of Illinois, and the Butterfly Habitat where you can see hundreds of butterflies each fall.
Running along the Illinois River, Peoria and Peoria s RiverFront is full of shopping, museums, restaurants, and entertainment opportunities. Peoria is also home to Caterpillar Inc., which manufactures a large variety of engines and equipment.
Stop by the Galesburg Railroad Museum while traveling in Great Rivers Country. Tour a 1930s engine, mail car, Pullman car, and caboose.
Come visit Macomb, home of Western Illinois University and the annual Macomb Balloon Rally. You can watch the hot air balloons lift off in the morning and watch the balloon glow in the evening.
Alphabet Game Be the first person to find all the letters in the alphabet, in order, using only the first letter of any word in signs or license plates. A word can only be used once. Make it easier: Use any letter on signs or license plates. I Spy One person looks around the car and picks an item. Then they say, I spy with my little eye, something beginning with the letter. The other people in the car ask yes or no questions to try to find out what it is. Make it harder: Use items inside and outside the car. License Plate Game Write down the names of all 50 states and as you are driving check off each state s license plate you see. Cow Game Pick 5 animals and assign them points. For instance: Cow = 1, Horse = 2, Dog = 5, Sheep = 10, Cat = 100. Try to be the first person to get a score of 100 points from all the animals on your side of the car. If a person on the other side of the car calls out an animal on your side of the car before you do, you subtract that animal s score from your total. If you pass a cemetery on your side of the road, go back to 0. Once Upon A Time Each player takes turns telling a story, one sentence at a time. Try to time your story so it ends at the same time you reach your destination. License Plate Name Game Find a license plate around you and try to turn the letters in the license plate into words using the letters in the order they are on the plate. One point is earned for each letter in the word. The first person to 100 wins. Make it easier: Use the letters in any order. Name That Tune Using the radio or a mix CD, play only a few seconds of a song and then stop. The first person to guess the name of the song wins. The winner gets to decide if you listen to the whole song or move on to the next song. Scavenger Hunt Before you set off on your trip, put together a list of 25 items. The first person to find all 25 items on their side of the car wins. If no one finds all 25 items, the person who finds the most items wins. Haiku A haiku is a short poem containing 17 syllables: 5 in the first phrase, 7 in the second, and 5 in the third. One person looks at signs or license plates outside the car and picks words having a total of 17 syllables. The other person has to make a haiku out of those words. Make it easier: Pick 17 words instead of words containing 17 syllables.
In Warsaw, you can see the Fort Edwards State Memorial. The obelisk, located on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River, is a monument to Fort Edwards built in 1814 and abandoned in 1824.
Towns throughout Greene County celebrate Greene County Days each fall. One of the largest events of Greene County Days is a Civil War reenactment held at the James J. Eldred House. Learn about life during the Civil War and watch the crew reenact a battle.
Stop by Mt. Sterling for the Brown County Fair. Events include a tractor pull, demolition derby, harness racing, and Kid s Day with carnival rides, games, and prizes.
The Schuyler County Courthouse, in Rushville, was built in Using photographs, the courthouse interior has been restored to its original appearance.
The Lewis and Clark expedition was the first expedition to the Pacific Ocean by the United States. Departing from Camp River Dubois, near the present day town of Hartford, they traveled in 3 boats, one of which was a keelboat that could be powered by oars, wind, poles or cordelling.
The remains of the most advanced native civilization in the United States lie at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, located a few miles west of Collinsville. At the peak of their civilization, there were between 10,000 and 20,000 inhabitants.
While in Southern Illinois, visit the Shawnee National Forest. You can go biking, hiking, boating, camping, fishing, rock climbing, horseback riding, or take a ride on a zip line. You can also see interesting rock formations and an abundance of wildlife.
Visit the southernmost point in Illinois to see Fort Defiance Park and go camping at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers.
