Our Community BALD HEAD ISLAND Once a favorite stopping site for pirates such as Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet, Bald Head Island is now a refuge for those who enjoy the true meaning of getting away from it all. As your passenger ferry departs the mainland from Deep Point Marina in Southport, magically so do your worries. Bald Head has 14 miles of unspoiled beaches, 12,000 acres of stunning salt marshes, tidal creek and maritime forest preserve. A secluded resort community with a sense of Cape Cod, but in a warmer climate, Bald Head Island offers first class accommodations and amenities. The main attractions on the island are the Old Baldy Lighthouse & Smith Island Museum and the many programs and activities provided by the Bald Head Island Conservancy. In the absence of automobiles on the island, transportation options include bicycles, electric golf carts or walking. BOILING SPRING LAKES Boiling Spring Lakes is named for a natural spring, its 16,000 acres of land was incorporated in Drayton Hastie, the original developer, began Boiling Spring Lakes to bring a semblance of the natural beauty of the lush Carolina country setting within the reach of the average family man, retired or otherwise. The wildlife and floriculture abound in this serene community as families and retirees peacefully co-exist with the shy fox squirrel or the protected cockaded woodpecker. Taking a walk through the Nature Preserve Trail, located adjacent the City s Community Building, you will be astonished at the variety of plant life which includes tall pines, oaks, sweet gums and flowers such as azaleas, camellias, and the rare and protected Venus flytrap. One of over 50 natural and man-made lakes, The Big Lake, a 275-acre lake is 2 1 /2 miles long with 10 miles of shoreline, and is the centerpiece for the city. Residents and visitors alike may enjoy golf at The Lakes Golf & Country Club, swimming, boating, water skiing, picnicking, tennis, and some good freshwater fishing. The City has a growing commercial district and a Community Building equipped with meeting rooms that double as classrooms for recreational programs and a fully equipped fitness room. BOLIVIA Bolivia is the County seat and the location of the County Government Complex and Courthouse. The county was formed in 1764 from parts of Bladen and New Hanover counties. During incorporation in 1911, the town submitted several names for the town which were denied. Locals chose the name Bolivia, taken from bags of fertilizer and boxes of tar and turpentine that were transported overseas to South America. The name was then adopted. The Town of Bolivia has easy access to Highway 17. Today it has a small commercial district with a bank, school, restaurant, convenience store and many home based businesses offering services to the residents in the rural section of the county and the government complex. The opening of the second bridge to Oak Island has positioned Bolivia and the Midway Road areas to take a lead in commercial development in the South Brunswick area of the County.

3 CASWELL BEACH Caswell Beach is a unique blend of year-round and summer homes creating an excellent environment for a great family vacation. The town takes its name from Fort Caswell, which was built by the Army in 1826 on the eastern tip of the island at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Fort Caswell is now owned by the North Carolina Baptist Assembly and welcomes thousands of visitors of all denominations each year. Also at the eastern tip of Caswell Beach are the U.S. Coast Guard Station and the Oak Island Lighthouse. The U.S. Coast Guard Station has been in operation at this location since the 1930 s; prior to that it was a U.S. Life Saving Station. In 2004, the lighthouse, surrounding property and adjacent beachfront property were deeded to the Town of Caswell Beach. Tours of the lighthouse are available on a limited basis (see attractions for more information). Caswell Beach shares the Oak Island Golf & Country Club with its neighbor Oak Island. The unique location of the course makes for exceptionally beautiful building lots with spectacular views of the ocean, marsh, fairways and wooded area. OAK ISLAND In 1999, the Towns of Long Beach & Yaupon Beach merged to create the Town of Oak Island, one of the most populated towns in Brunswick County. Oak Island is best described as a family-oriented year round community at the beach. There is not a significant seasonal business closing or breaks in municipal service. The year-round residents are excellent hosts and will make visitors feel welcome in their home... Oak Island. Oak Island is not a barrier island. It was once connected to the mainland until the Corps of Engineers cut the Intracoastal Waterway. For this reason you will find a variety and quantity of trees on the island, like the majestic live oak and the yaupon tree. With ten miles of beach on one side, the Intracoastal Waterway on the other and the Davis Canal winding its way up the middle, breathtaking waterfront views are plentiful. For the sun, sand and sea enthusiast, Oak Island s unique south facing beach make for gentle surf, moderate tides, spectacular sunrises and sunsets. Oak Island retains remarkable public access with more than 60 public beach accesses, one ocean pier, two waterway piers, three marinas, six boat/canoe ramps, two dog parks, numerous picnic areas, bike paths, walking and canoe trails and an extensive sidewalk system and raised walkways over the creeks and marsh. A very active parks & recreation program, the Town of Oak Island operates an executive golf course, Community Center, Skate Park, Environmental Education Center, fitness center and sporting fields with combined amenities including tennis courts, playgrounds, and playing fields for sports such as disc golf, soccer, baseball, basketball, and volleyball. Any given season you will observe youth and adult athletic leagues facing off on these fields. Growth has prompted the Town of Oak Island to expand its town limits to include the commercial district on the mainland approaching the G.V. Barbee Bridge on Highway 133 and the Swain s Cut Bridge on Middleton Avenue leading to 211/Midway Road. Oak Island s business district consists of varied retail stores, amusements, medical facilities, library, golf courses, marinas, professional offices, restaurants, churches and the Cape Fear Regional Jetport. ST. JAMES The Town of St. James is nestled against the Intracoastal Waterway and the Swain s Cut Bridge corridor on the mainland off Highway 211. Incorporated as a municipality in 1999, St. James is in a prime location convenient to schools, local shopping, restaurants, entertainment, beaches, and golf courses. The Town of St. James Conference Center hosts many local events and wedding receptions throughout the year. SOUTHPORT Happiest Seaside Town In America From the pirate ships of yesterday to the recreational vessels of today, Southport s protected harbor has long been noted for its salubrious breezes and hospitality. Located at the mouth of the Cape Fear River, the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean the view from Southport s Waterfront is extraordinary. Take a walk beneath the huge sprawling oak trees that line the avenues leading to striking historic homes and it won t take you long to figure out why Southport remains a highly desirable place to live. But don t let that laidback, sleepy facade fool you. Southport is a bustling city with a thriving commercial district of specialty shops, cafés, restaurants, professional offices, varied service providers, physician offices, marina, motels, bed & breakfast inns, churches, art galleries, museums, meeting facilities, and Dosher Memorial Hospital. Southport s green space is plentiful with many parks and recreational areas. Franklin Square Park is home to the N.C. 4th of July Festival Arts & Crafts, Southport Spring Festival, movies, and musical & theatrical performances by numerous local community groups. The Indian Trail Tree, estimated to be over 800 years old majestically oversees Keziah Park where visitors and residents enjoy a quiet area to relax. Waterfront Park is the best place to watch large transoceanic ships pass on their way up the Cape Fear River to the NC State Ports, creating remarkable photographic opportunities. Fort Johnston Garrison Lawn, is used by the community for numerous gatherings including the Waterfront Market and the N.C. 4th of July Festival Naturalization Ceremony. Riverwalk, a sidewalk around the river front through the Old Yacht Basin to the Southport Marina with many opportunities along the way to sit a spell on a bench or swing and take in the sights and sounds of this serene village. Southport is also highly ranked as a desirable place to retire. The climate is moderate, and the area offers virtually year round golf, boating and fishing seasons. Folklore suggests that anyone who drinks from the water pump located in Franklin Square Park is destined to return. We hope you will drink in our heritage and hospitality and return, if not, just for a visit, for a lifetime. SUNSET HARBOR Sunset Harbor, tucked away on the Lockwood Folly River is a serene, wildlife friendly community. A place where deer and fox live beside their human neighbors in complete harmony. Where an angler can cast a line over oyster beds and catch their limit of drum and trout. Where the country store has everything from homegrown vegetables to fuel. The peacefulness of this area is appealing to those that love the country. The sunsets are the most striking you will see. A number of new housing developments have increased the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful scenery along the tidal creeks, salt marshes, and Lockwood Folly River in Sunset Harbor. Brunswick Town, a colonial site dating from served as a Cape Fear River Port that was the major export of naval stores and the location of the Stamp Act Rebellion. Fort Anderson was a Confederate fortification, which was part of the Cape Fear Defense System until the Civil War engagement of February Self-guided tour of the archaeological remains, onsite visitor center, and picnic area. Houses a collection of memorabilia pertaining to the vast nautical history of the Lower Cape Fear and southeastern North Carolina. View a 2,000 year-old 54 Indian canoe fragment; read Gentleman Pirate Stede Bonnet s touching pleas for clemency, before he was hanged, peer through the eye-piece of the 35 periscope, enjoy the extensive collection of delicate ship models, including those built by the late Col. Herbert Franck, see the shipwreck City of Houston display which will bring back memories of great-grandmother s home of 1878; learn about hurricanes and listen to the weather forecast on marine radio and more. Free ncmaritimemuseums.com OLD BRUNSWICK COUNTY JAIL MUSEUM Corner of Nash & Rhett Streets across from the Olde Smithville Burying Ground, a must see for history buffs. The Jail was built in Southport in 1904 for a low bid of $6,738. It is a two story brick building laid in 1:6 bond. The jail has two cells and a runabout on the second floor. Each cell was designed with four bunks, a commode and a wash basin. Still visible upstairs is graffiti drawn by prisoners. The most notorious criminal to be booked in the facility was movie actress Sissy Spacek. Some of her scenes were filmed in the Old Jail during the summer of 1986 and may be seen in the movie Crimes of the Heart. Learn interesting facts about the landmarks and homes in the City then take a leisurely walk along the Riverwalk. The summer of 2012 was very busy year for filming in the Southport-Oak Island area. Iron Man III shot a scene on Oak Island s beaches and at the Cape Fear Regional Jetport; HBO Films Presentation Mary & Martha with Hilary Swank and Safe Haven with Josh

7 Duhamel, Julianne Hough, David Lyons & Cobie Smulders brought Southport to life on the silver screen. The Stephen King based TV series Under the Dome filmed in Southport. 8 Activities & Attractions Bald Head Island Limited LOCAL LIGHTHOUSES 8 OLD BALDY LIGHTHOUSE & SMITH ISLAND MUSEUM Celebrating 200 years, built in 1817, is North Carolina s oldest lighthouse. During her 86 years of service she guided many ships safely into the mouth of the Cape Fear River. She was retired in She is open to the public for tours. Open: Monday-Saturday 9am-5pm and Sunday 11am- 5pm (Memorial Day September). Tuesday-Saturday 10:00am- 4:00pm and Sunday 11am-4pm (Spring & Fall). Admission Price: $6 Adults (13 & over); $3.00 Child (3-12); Free Children under 2. Historic Tour: Depart Deep Point Marina on the 10am ferry upon arrival you will visit a civil war fort, hear stories of pirates, river pilots, and life saving crewmen, and climb to the top of Old Baldy. Groups of 12 & more oldbaldy.org OAK ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE 300 Caswell Beach Road, Caswell Beach - adjacent to the U.S. Coast Guard Station Oak Island. The Oak Island Lighthouse was completed in 1958 at a total cost of $110, The structure stands 153 feet, but because it stands on a slight rise the light is 169 feet above the water. The light is two banks of four, 1,000-watt, 125-volt GE Halogen lamps in a canister type housings with highly polished mirror to reflect the light out in a powerful beam. The top bank of four lights is used for normal operation; the lower bank is for backup. Each light has its own signature flash pattern. Oak Island Lighthouse characteristic light flash pattern is four-1 second flashes followed by 6 seconds of blank for a 10 second rotation. It can be seen 24 nautical miles offshore. There is no spiral staircase but instead a series of ships ladders with a total 131 steps to the gallery level. In 2004, the lighthouse and the surrounding property were deeded to the Town of Caswell Beach, along with adjacent beach front property, as part of the Federal Land to Parks program. The U.S. Coast Guard continues to maintain the light as an active aid to navigation. The lighthouse grounds are open year round for viewing. 30 minute parking provided at the base of the tower is open sunrise to sunset. Public tours for anyone 7 years of age or older to the second level (12 ships ladder steps) are available on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am 2pm Memorial Day to Labor Day. Tours to the top for anyone 9 years or older are available year round and require prior reservations. Top tours must be scheduled at least 2 weeks in advance on the Friends of the Oak Island Lighthouse website. Make sure to wear sneakers. Free. oakislandlighthouse.org PRICE S CREEK LIGHTHOUSE is 20 feet tall with a red brick exterior. It was built in The lighthouse, although not operational, is the only one still standing of eight lighthouses built along the Cape Fear River between Oak island and Wilmington. It is located on private property but visible from the Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry as you leave the Southport dock.

9 A Reason For Every Season On "THE REEF" Anglers from across the nation flock to the waters off the Southport- Oak Island area to enjoy fishing on the many artificial reef sites built and maintained by the Long Bay Artificial Reef Association. In cooperation with the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries, this non-profit organization launched an artificial fishing reef building campaign and has established nine artificial reef sites. If you are looking for a testament to the reef sites success, just ask any angler in U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament where they caught their winning fish, just possibly it will have been on The Reef. So pack up the family, hook up the boat, and come on down. Southport Oak Island Boiling Spring Lakes St. James Caswell Beach Bald Head Island Eastern Brunswick County Brunswick By Lee Hinnant Staff Writer The Brunswick County Fire Commission rolled out draft performance standards last Thursday and has given local chiefs two weeks to respond with concerns or questions before reconsidering the matter at a meeting scheduled for February 13. The commission, composed of first-responders, elected officials and residents, is attempting to bring some sense of shared expectations among 18 departments stretched across a county encompassing more than 830 square miles. While some departments have full-time career staff, most rely heavily on volunteers. Funding for the various departments also varies, and the county directly subsidizes some departments with the smallest budgets. At the meeting that included county commissioners Mike Forte and Pat Sykes and county manager Ann Hardy, county leaders spoke of the need to set some minimum level of expectation and then figure out ways to help pay for improvements, where called for. We will not impose requirements on a department without making sure there are means to meet it, said Carolina Shores Mayor Joyce Dunn. The idea is a uniform level of service and working on ways to make that happen, said committee chairman Walt Eccard, mayor of Shallotte. Minimum suggested standards for single responses within primary coverage areas include: n Providing four responders to all structure fires. n Providing two responders 90-percent of the time for fires and hazardous conditions other than structure fires. n Responding to medical calls within nine minutes 90-percent of the time. n Bringing at least two responders to medical calls, except vehicle crashes, 90-percent of the time. Finance director David Hatten praised staff for a property tax collection rate of 99.7-percent, which he called very, very good. Hatten said the town would spend more than planned on new water taps, but that was because growth on the island had exceeded expectations. Town manager David Kelly See Oak Island, page 7A By Renee Spencer Staff Writer Brunswick County school officials say the state school calendar law has them handcuffed as they look for options to make up days missed during the recent winter storm. Associate Supt. Jerry Oates discussed a make-up day proposal with members of the school board during committee meetings Tuesday afternoon. Oates said staff came up with a proposal after hearing feedback from the district s teacher advisory council. Students missed a total of four days during the storm January 3, 4 and 5, and January 8. Students made up one of the days this week on January 23, which initially was scheduled as a required teacher workday. The teacher advisory council advised school officials against taking the make-up days from spring break scheduled from March 23 through March 30 or holding school on Saturdays, because many families have already planned trips and students are involved in activities on the weekends. Oates noted that the district was also prevented from adding days to the end of the school year due to the state calendar law, which requires that school end no later than the Friday closest to June 11. Staff proposed having students make up one of the additional days on the next designated workday February 19 and forgiving the other two days. Oates explained that because the original calendar had 1,060 instructional hours built-in, the district would still meet the 1,025 hours required by the state. Board members John Thompson and Ed Lemon were reluctant to agree to the proposal.
