12 RESTAURANT GUIDE There was a time when fine dining in the West meant an inch-thick slab of Prime Rib covering two-thirds of the plate, with a slathered-up baked potato, a leafy green side salad, and a fresh roll taking up what little room remained. And, when the occasion demands a fine cut of beef, the Black Hills still have many restaurants ready to serve up mouthwatering steaks that top the competition. But these days, there s much more on the restaurant range than just a juicy steak. Visitors are sure to be pleasantly surprised by the variety of cuisines available throughout the Black Hills. Cultural traditions represented by area restaurants include Chinese, Mexican, Korean, German, Italian, French, Lakota, Thai, Indian, Japanese, Vietnamese, and much more. Chefs trained in the world s great classic food traditions from French to Szechwan to the American South are creating culinary masterpieces in bistros and eateries throughout the Black Hills. Area restaurants are reeling in local ingredients in an effort to provide guests with inventive dishes that showcase the region s native bounty. Throughout the state, chefs have invented delectable entrées utilizing buffalo, elk, pheasant, walleye, and rainbow trout each providing a uniquely South Dakota flavor. MURDO Prairie Berry Winery Follow up any meal with an order of kuchen South Dakota s official state dessert. First introduced by German immigrants in the late nineteenth century, traditional recipes of this cake-based dessert call for lightly sweetened yeast dough with a custard and fresh fruit filling. Whether you choose from one of the dozens of casual dining eateries or prefer a more upscale fine-dining atmosphere, the area offers an outstanding variety of restaurants, cafés, bistros, chuckwagons, and supper clubs. And because the Black Hills is a vacation destination, the dining ambience is casual and informal even a new Black Hills souvenir t-shirt will fit right in with the locals. Bon appétit! u HILL CITY 10

18 THE BADLANDS Badlands National Park 16 Ready to deepen your appreciation of the very essence of nature? Welcome to Badlands National Park. It s wide open and wild a place where you can look for miles and see no sign of civilization. A meadowlark piping in the cool morning air and the darting pronghorns seem company enough. Here there are no obstructions to mar the horizon. The land appears to unfold unceasingly until it meets the sky. This place encompasses so much beauty that more than 160 square miles of it have been reserved for inclusion and protection in our National Parks System. Visually, the Badlands are most picturesque early or late in the day when deep shadows define the formations. The play of light and color on the buttes, spires, and valleys gives way to world-class photography opportunities. If you are thoroughly smitten by the Badlands, consider a hike on one of the eight marked hiking trails, ranging from to 10-mile round-trip hikes, with most rated easy to moderate. Horseback riding is also permitted anywhere in the Park except on marked trails, roads, and highways. For an even more intimate experience, choose to spend a few nights camping under the starry skies of the Badlands. There are several campground and cabin options to suit your needs, including primitive campsites at Sage Creek Campground. At the Ben Reifel Visitor Center, educational exhibits, colorful photos, and life-size models illustrate the geology and paleontology of the Badlands. Another area features a fascinating oral history film by local residents. A seven-day park pass costs $20 per vehicle or $10 per motorcycle. A Badlands National Park annual pass is available for $40. u

Many more can be found crisscrossing the Black Hills National Forest, the Black Hills of Wyoming, as well as through Badlands National Park. Your trail options are truly endless. Throughout the region, there are a number of outfitters that offer horseback trail riding excursions. All you need is a pair of closed-toe shoes and your camera! With nearly all of the Forest Service roads and trails open to horses, there is a lifetime worth of horseback riding to be had in the Black Hills and Badlands. All State Park Horse-Camps (as well as some private camps), require certified weed-free hay. You may bring certified weed-free hay from home. A few may offer it for purchase on-site and most feed stores in the area offer it. It s wise to shoe your horses (at least the front) as terrain changes abruptly and can be quite rocky. Always bring a jacket/slicker, snacks and water. While trails are usually well-marked, you can get lost and the weather can change quickly! Don t have your own horse, but want to ride? 46 HOT SPRINGS Historic Evans building 44 For hundreds of years, the area of Hot Springs was particularly prized by Native American tribes for its numerous warm water springs that served as an inviting refuge. This warm water had much to do with how the town developed and the role it serves today, both as a vacation destination and a growing regional arts mecca and historical center. The Mammoth Site, the largest in situ (bones left as found) mammoth site dig in the world, can be found in Hot Springs. This American Alliance of Museums (AAM) accredited site is the resting place for large Columbian and woolly mammoths (61 discovered and counting) that became trapped after sliding into a sinkhole approximately 150,000 years ago. The Mammoth Site also offers summer programs for youth interested in paleontology. Pioneer businessman Fred Evans was among the first to see the potential in the therapeutic waters. In 1890, he erected a building enclosing the largest indoor natural warm water pool today known as Evans Plunge Mineral Springs. Open year round, the 87-degree mineral waters still make it a preeminent attraction in Hot Springs. Evans also spearheaded construction of many of the town s distinctive downtown sandstone edifices with sandstone from quarries just outside Hot Springs itself. Today, Hot Springs entire downtown district is comprised of more than 35 Victorian-era sandstone structures with remarkable architecture, all of which can be explored through the Chamber of Commerce s self-guided Digital Walking Tour at Hot Springs downtown is home to a vast array of specialty shops and boutiques, must-try restaurants like Big Time Pizza, lounges, and plenty of art galleries and museums such as the Morris Grand Gallery and A Museum of Childhood.

50 MOUNT RUSHMORE Mount Rushmore National Memorial 48 Between October 4, 1927, and October 31, 1941, Gutzon Borglum and 400 workers sculpted the colossal faces of US presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln to represent the first 150 years of the great experiment in democracy that is America. But Borglum faced monumental obstacles in pursuit of his dream. Harsh winters and inadequate funding often stalled progress. In fact, Mount Rushmore National Memorial stands not only as a rock-solid reminder of our national pride, but as a monument to the patriotism and stubborn determination of a sculptor and the local crew of miners he guided in carving a mountain into one of the greatest wonders of the world. As is often the case, Borglum s vision was considered an unrealistic fantasy by many of his contemporaries. Although the original concept of a large sculpture came from the well-respected SD State Historian Doane Robinson in 1923, when Borglum announced plans a few years later to actually begin the monument, the local citizens were not particularly supportive. But by the time the monument was completed, the naysayers skepticism had been transformed into the wonder and amazement that continues to this day. Upon arriving at the Memorial, everyone is awed by the size of the sculpture. The 60-foot faces of the four presidents tower 5,500 feet above sea level and are scaled to men who would stand 465 feet tall. Next, visitors see it as a work of art. Borglum s artistic genius is apparent in the placement of the faces, as the sun s passage creates ever-changing shadows that bring mobility and fluidity to the monument. Today s visitors come away with a patriotic appreciation as well as a thorough understanding of the monument from its nuts and bolts construction methods to its iconic place in America s heritage. After parking your vehicle (parking fee applies), stop by the Information Center to check out times of special

New in 2018, a multimedia tour that includes audio, video, and a Junior Ranger Program will also be available for rent. Stroll up to the Avenue of Flags, where it s fun to take a photo of your state s flag, then admire the magnificent sculpture on the Grand View Terrace. 52 MOUNT RUSHMORE CONTINUED FROM PAGE point. Beautiful forest surroundings welcome visitors to the closest viewpoints of the faces as it loops through the woods and among the blast fragments at the base of the monument. Stop by the Lakota, Nakota, and Dakota Heritage Village along the trail and learn about the culture of the American Indians, indigenous to the Black Hills. Though it will be undergoing construction in 2018, the Sculptor s Studio, where Borglum s original models of the four presidents are on display, is located at the end of the trail. As you climb the steps back up, stop in the Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center, at the top of the amphitheater. Inside is a museum, bookstore, and the film Mount Rushmore, The Shrine, describing the history of the carving, the carving process, and why Borglum chose those four presidents. Exhibits that feature the carving process, the workers, and the history of the Memorial are also on display. Developing an appetite while you stroll around the Memorial? Carvers Marketplace, with seating for 300, offers visitors a delicious array of food selections, served with a commanding view of the presidential sculptures. And don t leave without sampling some of Thomas Jefferson s famous vanilla ice cream! By far, the most spectacular program at Mount Rushmore is the Evening Lighting Ceremony, held in the Amphitheater at 9 p.m. during the summer season. Following a 20-minute film about Mount Rushmore, huge banks of LED lights dramatically reveal the four presidential faces, stark white against the black, starry South Dakota sky. That s when hearts swell with patriotism and a renewed dedication to our nation and its founding principles: democracy, freedom, and the pursuit of happiness. u 2-HR ZIPLINE JOURNEY WITH MAJESTIC VIEWS OF MT. 75 SPEARFISH CANYON Unique and unparalleled elsewhere in our country. Those were the words used by America s greatest architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, when he visited Spearfish Canyon in September Wright s journey through the canyon was made along a particularly rugged trail that followed a railroad track that had been abandoned by the Burlington Railroad. By 1950, the trail had been transformed into a smoothly paved roadway, and today, Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway (US Hwy 14A) offers its spectacular views to the driving public year-round. Spearfish Canyon has it all rugged cliffs, sparkling Spearfish Creek, a rich landscape dominated by pine, spruce, aspen, and birch stands, and three waterfalls. Emerge yourself in the beauty with a stay at one of the canyon s multiple lodge or cabin accommodations. To experience a historic stay in the canyon, plan a night or two in a log cabin at either Rim Rock Lodge, one of the oldest resorts in the Northern Black Hills, or Wickiup Village Cabins, nestled on the banks of Spearfish Creek. Spearfish Canyon Lodge offers comfortable accommodations year-round. Located in the middle of the scenic byway, it s an ideal stay for those who want to explore the many nearby trails either by foot, or in the snowy months, by snowmobile. They provide on-site rentals of snowmobiles and UTVs to maximize your stay. For dining, enjoy a meal at the Latchstring Inn Restaurant. 78 DEVILS TOWER Devils Tower National Monument 76 Two geologic features protrude out of the rolling prairie that surrounds the Black Hills region. Both of the sites are considered sacred places to the Lakota and other tribes that have a connection to the Black Hills and surrounding area. One Lakota legend connects Devils Tower in Wyoming and Bear Butte in South Dakota. It tells of two Sioux children who wandered far from their village. Mato the bear, a huge creature with claws the size of tipi poles, spotted them and wanted to eat them. He was almost upon them when the children prayed to Wakan Tanka, the Creator, to help them. They rose up on a huge rock, while Mato tried to get up from every side, leaving huge scratch marks as he did. Finally, he sauntered off. The bear came to rest northeast of the Black Hills at what is now known as Bear Butte. Wanblee, the eagle, helped the children off the rock and back to their village. At the Devils Tower Visitor Center, a painting depicting this Cheyenne legend hangs over the fireplace. Today, both landmarks are national treasures, and both retain their spiritual significance to the region s Native American tribes. Visitors can easily visit each site during a day s journey in the Northern Hills. The drive through the Belle Fourche River Valley is particularly beautiful, no matter the season. As one approaches the town of Hulett, glimpses of Devils Tower come tantalizingly into view. Larger and larger it looms, until the dramatic pillar, rising 1,267 feet above the surrounding terrain, fills the horizon. DEVILS TOWER CONTINUED ON PAGE 78 44

86 SKIS, SHOES & BOARDS Skiing throughout the Black Hills 84 With elevations in the 7,000-foot range, the Black Hills may not be the Rockies, but the view from atop Terry Peak Ski Area located near the historic gold mining towns of Lead and Deadwood rivals the scenic vantage points of the renowned range to the west. To the south are the rolls and swells of the Black Hills. To the east, the boundless prairie horizon is jolted by the massive hump of Bear Butte, standing in solitary splendor. At 1,100 feet, Terry Peak can boast of the highest vertical drops this side of the Rockies, and offers a full slate of services and amenities along with a neighborly ambiance. And you won t find Rocky Mountain high prices here either. Skiers and boarders of all persuasions find these to be quality slopes with easy access to all the lodging, dining, and entertainment amenities that make a ski vacation a winter necessity for thousands of Black Hills visitors each year. Along with the stunning scenery, the northern Black Hills average nearly 150 inches of fresh powder every year. All in all, it s a magnificent setting for the region s best downhill ski and snowboard resort. If you re looking to combine a healthy activity with a first-hand encounter of rich landscapes, untouched beauty, and fresh Black Hills air, consider snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. While snowshoeing started thousands of years ago as a mode of transportation, it has evolved into a popular winter activity for recreation and fitness. Snowshoeing

87 Snow capped trees at Terry Peak is a very easy and enjoyable way to get outside during the snowy winter days. If you do not have your own snowshoes, you can borrow them from Custer State Park or the Mickelson Trail Office. Both provide snowshoe rentals that are free to check out for a day or weekend for anyone from youth to adult. As for cross-country skiing, nearly 6,000 miles of abandoned railroad grades, logging roads, and fire trails ensure that the path is always open and uncrowded. The moderate elevations and temperatures, combined with fresh, powdery snow, make for great cross-country ski outings throughout the Black Hills. u BlackHillsBadlands.com 85

89 ICE FISHING Ice Fishing in the Black Hills If winter days are beginning to seem a bit dreary, then head out to the lake. You re likely to find the sun brightly shining on a brilliant expanse of lake ice, the sky open and blue, and the temperature surprisingly mild. Sheridan Lake, southwest of Rapid City, usually freezes solid in January and stays that way through the end of February. Here you ll find a varied population of trout, perch, and some northern pike. The big trout reign at Deerfield Lake, high on the alpine plains northwest of Hill City, with record-breaking specimens taking the bait some years. Pactola, a cold and deep reservoir just west of Rapid City, holds mostly rainbows, a few cutthroat trout, and some wild browns. Center, Legion, and Stockade lakes in Custer State Park are good for crappies and trout. Stockade, along with Bismarck Lake, produces more lunkers in winter than in any other season. Walleye, smallmouth bass, channel catfish, perch, and largemouth bass make Angostura Reservoir very popular for ice fishing. You ll also find great ice-fishing opportunities on the Belle Fourche Reservoir. Wherever you decide to go, stock up on fishing licenses, handbooks, fishing guides, and maps at any of the SD Game, Fish & Park offices or local tackle shops. u Ice Fishing in the Black Hills BlackHillsBadlands.com 87

90 FATBIKING Fatbiking through the Black Hills 88 If you ve been in the market for a new bike, you may have come across an unusual style of bikes that have been rapidly growing in popularity: the fatbike. Even though the style has been around for several decades, fatbikes or snow bikes have begun to appeal to the masses. Today, some bike shops are even recommending fatbikes over more traditional models of bikes because of their added versatility, which allows a fatbike to roll with ease over a wide variety of terrain. Besides rolling through snow, fatbikes can be ridden on almost any trail, year round, which can drastically extend a cycling enthusiast s outdoor season. Plus, they re just plain fun! For those unfamiliar, it s a combination of wide rims, extra-large tires, and weirdly dimensioned frames that all fit together to define a fatbike a relatively new cycling subcategory that is garnering a serious following right here in the Black Hills. With an average of four-inch wide tires, fatbiking removes some of the technical skills required of its mountain biking counterpart. And local recreation groups have certainly taken note of the growing sport. Several competitive winter races are now offered, including Snow Jam, a series of events hosted by the Northern Hills Recreation Association, and the 28 Below Fatbike Races, which consist of 25-mile and 30-mile rides that are held in mid-march through picturesque Spearfish Canyon. The functionality of a fatbike gives new feeling to

91 familiar trails, but they do require a little more thought if you want to be comfortable throughout your ride. Appropriate dress is a must for this sport. A good rule of thumb is that you should feel slightly cold when you first begin your ride. If you re already warm and toasty, you could run the risk of overheating as soon as you start pedaling. With that in mind, you also don t want to be shivering or going numb. While there may not be a perfect way to dress, be sure to listen to your body and wear layers so that you can either add a layer or shed one depending on your body s needs. Bring along a backpack where you can stash some sunblock, lip balm, water, and snacks. It s also a smart idea to pack at least a minimal tool kit and spare tube. Once you ve settled on your apparel and gear choices, just swing a leg over the frame of your fatbike and descend out into the wide-open world ahead of you. Fatbiking in the Black Hills is the perfect winter blend of mental and physical rejuvenation. The added beauty of fatbiking is that you can ride on any Black Hills trail where mountain biking is permitted meaning endless promises for adrenaline rushes and wintertime fun. u Fatbiking grows in popularity BlackHillsBadlands.com 89

92 WILDLIFE VIEWING Wildlife in Badlands National Park 90 Buffalo roam the snowy prairie Once autumn dissolves into the powdery white of winter, it s time for snowshoeing, cross country skiing, ice fishing, and peaceful hikes in the snow. Winter also draws the wildlife to the lower meadows an excellent time to view area bison, elk, deer, and bighorn sheep. You re likely to see a variety of wildlife on any drive you take in western South Dakota. While roads in the higher parts of Custer State Park are not maintained in the winter, a drive along the Wildlife Loop in the southern part of the park allows you to enjoy the animal antics right from the seat of your car. The most leisurely and scenic route to Custer State Park is on Hwy 385, the main thoroughfare that runs the entire length of the Black Hills from the southernmost tip near

93 Hot Springs all the way to Deadwood on the northern edge. You ll see heavy forest as well as open meadows until you arrive in Custer, the gateway to the western entrance of Custer State Park. A winter drive through Badlands National Park will have you deepening your appreciation of the very essence of nature. With the receding tide of summer tourism, the rhythms of life in the Badlands come to the fore. The park s myriad of wildlife buffalo, bighorn sheep, pronghorns, deer, and coyotes have this vast rangeland all to themselves. They can be easily spotted along the roadway or near the turnouts as they return to areas earlier overtaken by human visitors. Discover for yourself how captivating winter in the Badlands can be! u 91 BlackHillsBadlands.com
