6 Williamsport and Lycoming County s modern history dates back to the early 1700s when the Susquehanna River valley was being settled by those moving west to explore and settle new opportunities during that time. The city of Williamsport prospered during the mid to late 1800s due to the growth of the lumber industry. The pine and hemlock trees that covered the forest for several hundred miles north and west of Lycoming County were harvested and initially sent by river and later rail to the lumber mills situated in Williamsport. The boards from these mills were sent to various locations throughout the United States to help a growing nation during this period of history. A walk down Williamsport s West Fourth Street in what is now the Millionaires Row National Historic District will provide you with an appreciation of the considerable wealth that was generated from the lumber industry. Millionaires Row features Victorian homes built during the mid to late 1800s and is part of a collection of homes that Victorian Homes Magazine referred to as one of the best depictions of Victorian architecture in Pennsylvania. Williamsport s Historic District is also home to three museums: The Rowley House, Peter Herdic Transportation and Thomas T. Taber Museums. There is also rich history to be found in neighboring communities of Muncy and Montoursville. Lycoming County offers a variety of activities in addition to its rich historical assets. We have a number of sports and outdoor recreation venues in the area. Williamsport is the birthplace and neighboring South Williamsport is the home to Little League Baseball and the annual Little League World Series. Beyond the baseball diamonds, youth sports reach in many different directions including football, soccer and lacrosse.

7 New to Williamsport is the Liberty Sports Arena and Fly World Trampoline Park. The Liberty Arena is an 81,000 square foot, state of the art sports facility located in the business district in the heart of downtown Williamsport, Pennsylvania. It has both turf and solid surfaces offering a variety of sporting activities. Fly World Trampoline Park is the one and only destination for high flying fun! Fly World is a 10,000 square foot complex adjacent to the Liberty Sports Arena that provides you with the ability to come and jump on their main court or try your slam dunk skills on their basketball lanes or to play a game of dodge-ball on one of their two courts Williamsport and all of Lycoming County, offers great hiking and biking options including the Susquehanna River Walk (Williamsport/ South Williamsport/Loyalsock), Pine Creek Trail (north of Jersey Shore) and Old Loggers Path (north of Montoursville). One can also go out to almost any forest or stream to find fishing and hunting opportunities. Those who enjoy their experiences indoors can take advantage of shopping in an array of specialty boutiques, antique shops, handcrafted jewelry and quaint country stores. There s also shopping at the Lycoming Mall with over 100 stores in nearby Muncy. The first ever Little League game was played on June 6, 1939 in Williamsport. From its humble beginnings in 1939 to today, Little League has become the world s largest organized youth sports program. The greater Williamsport and Lycoming County area is teaming with skilled artist and artisans. Downtown Williamsport highlights this monthly with First Friday, now well into its second decade. The performing arts are represented locally through the Community Theatre League and on a larger stage at the Community Arts Center. On the dining side, Lycoming County is host to a wide-array of restaurants offering food samplings to satisfying many different palates. Taber Museum of the Lycoming County Historical Society, the Peter Herdic Transportation Museum and the Rowley House Museum, all full of fun and interesting facts on the history of Lycoming County. You ll also find local museums in communities such as Muncy, Montoursville and Balls Mills. The Sones Farm and Home Museum in Muncy offers the opportunity to experience farming life over the last two centuries. ATTRACTIONS arts, culture and history 2016 Catch a ride on the Hiawatha Paddlewheel Riverboat for a cruise along the Susquehanna River. The Hiawatha offers public cruises, dinner and concert cruises and family night activities. The Hiawatha is a definite must-do when visiting. If theatre and the arts are more your interests, we have you covered there too. The Community Arts Center (CAC) is bound to have a show for you and the whole family. In the past, the CAC has welcomed such artists as Jerry Seinfeld, Jeff Dunham, Goo Goo Dolls, Trace Adkins and Larry the Cable Guy. We have had many Broadway

9 shows too Mama Mia, Spamalot, Beauty & the Beast just to name a few. The CAC is also home to the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra. The Community Theatre League offers visitors the opportunity to see outstanding productions with our local talent. The Pajama Factory is a great place to meet some friends and check the art scene. Our year-round calendar of events is sure to have something you will enjoy. Springtime is blooming with activities like the start of First Fridays in Williamsport, Ways Garden Art Show, the new exhibits at Clyde Peeling s Reptiland and start of another season of the Hiawatha. The summer brings the Billtown Blues Festival, Lycoming County Fair, Grand Slam Parade, Little League World Series and Crosscutters baseball. Fall is sure to appeal with the Apple Butter Festival, Iron Cross Mountain Bike Race, Great The Pajama Factory is a complex of historic factory buildings built between 1883 and It was used as a model for the 1950s Broadway play, and later the movie, The Pajama Game. 12 The sound of a bat and ball are synonymous with baseball and what better form of baseball is there than that played by Little Leaguers. Williamsport is the home and birthplace of Little League Baseball. Every year we celebrate this heritage in late August with the Little League World Series. Enthusiasts from all over the world make their annual trek to enjoy America s pastime at its purist. Year round those who are passionate about Little League have the opportunity to learn more about sports & OUTDOORS Outdoor Recreation its history by visiting the World of Little League Museum. Get up to date information by liking them on Facebook Can t get enough baseball? We re also home to the Williamsport Crosscutters, a shortseason class A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, who play in the New York-Penn League. Their 38 game schedule runs from mid- June through the beginning of September with all of their home games being played at BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field. A bit of history on Bowman Field is that it is the second oldest minor league ball park in the country and has seen the likes of players including Nolan Ryan, Bill Mazeroski and Jim Rice. Like to get outdoors? Experience some of the most picturesque portions of the northeast US here in Lycoming County. Enjoy the Susquehanna River and any one of its many tributaries like the Pine, Loyalsock or Muncy Creeks. You can fish, canoe, kayak, swim or just skip a stone in any one of the bodies of water in our area.

Hiking, hunting, skiing (cross country and downhill), snowmobiling, biking, running or just sitting outside and enjoying the clean fresh air are just some of the things you can enjoy while visiting Lycoming County. These activities can be done in our state parks and forests (5 total in the county), along the river (Susquehanna River Walk in Williamsport), or an area stream (Pine Creek Trail).
