NOC GEM & MINERAL SOCIETY NEWS Vol. 32 No, 8 October 2013 President s Message by Nancy Bird Hi All There have been a lot of changes happening to our club. Earlier in the year, Susan Hansen resigned being Secretary due to health reasons and we had to officially appoint Teri Heuer to the post to satisfy the State. So we were short one officer. This summer, Carolyn Coleman and then Ofelia Warthen both resigned from the Board. I asked Frank Winn to come onto the Board, and he was at the last scheduled meeting. During the meeting there was a dust-up (I still don t know exactly what happened) and Loretta Ogden resigned from the club all together. We continued the meeting and got a lot accomplished, one being that we will be voting on appointing Susan Hansen as a life member. Another is that we will continue to use the November auction money to offset our Holiday Dinner and not have it be added into the Scholarship Fund. Don Warthern has also resigned from many of his posts, but is still our Treasurer. Since I am the Dealer Chair for the show in 2014, I can do the whole job and Armando Perdoza will learn some of the ropes. Teri will be doing the Donation Awards. I need someone to be in charge of cases and probably a million other things. Teri Heuer will also be taking over the Federation Director s position. We need 2 people to come onto the Board, and one to be either the 2 st. V.P. or Secretary, some people to sit on a various committees-education, Scholarship, Show, and City and Chamber rep. We need someone to do the monthly raffle at our meetings, and someone to be in charge of refreshments. Please sign up for the Holiday dinner at Portofino s Dec. 10. I will get a list of choices by the next meeting. Either we go forward or we close. It s up to all of us. Thanks for the support many of you have given. 4 California Earthquakes by Don Ogden Southern California has not experienced any of the following weather conditions this year: 1. Floods 2. Hurricanes 3. Snow ball size hail 4. Tornados 5. Tsunamis Are we in Southern California in line for a major earthquake the big one because of this? Let s take a look at the plate tectonic theory, the San Andreas Fault, and California earthquake s to see what lies ahead. Plate Tectonic Theory According to the plate tectonic theory, the earth s surface is broken into eight major and several minor crustal plates, which are constantly in motion. Boundaries between these plates are the location of active, long-term tectonic activity. As the plates move in relation to each other along the faults, they do one of three things: 1. They converge (bump into each other). 2. They diverge (pull away from each other). 3. They slip (move laterally past each other) The slip (3) movement is the situation along most of California s west coast. The Pacific Plate includes a slice of California s west coast (including the Monterey Bay area, San Luis Obispo, the Santa Barbara coast, La Habra, the Los Angles basin, and San Diego) and Baja California. The North American plate includes the rest of California, North America and the western half of the Atlantic Ocean. These plates slip past each other laterally for the most part. The plane on which most of the motion occurs in California is the San Andreas fault system. The fault is one of the best exposed tetonic-plate boundaries in the world. Plates move a few inches a year, or about feet a century. This may not seem like much, but a 65-year-old native of La Habra now lives about six feet closer to San Francisco than he did at the time of his birth because of the horizontal movements along the Pacific and North American plate boundaries. The plates move lateraly past each other. When the plates get stuck or locked together, stress occurs. The stress builds up until it snaps, and produces a sudden movment along the weakest point of the fault. The snap sends out the shock waves that we call earthquakes. California is part of the circum-pacific seismic belt (Ring of Fire) that is responsible for about 80% of the world s earthquakes and volcanic activity. 4 News - October 2013

San Andreas Fault The San Andreas fault separates the Pacific and North American plates. The fault is in California and extends more than 835 miles fom the Salton Sea to Cape Mendocino. It is the best-exposed strike-slip fault in the world. The San Andreas fault and most north-west trending faults are right-lateral strike-slip faults. If you stand on one side of the fault and look across it, the movement of the opposite side is always to the right (like car traffic in England). There are hundreds of other active faults in California. However, only a few others faults ( including the Garlock) are left-lateral strike-slip. If you stand on one side of the fault and look across it, the movement of the opposite side is always to the left (like car traffic in USA). The San Andreas fault also includes two volcanoes: Mt. Lassen, which erupted in 1914, and Mt. Shasta. The San Andreas fault zone ranges in width from less than a hundred yards to several miles, and extends to depts of at least 15 miles, and probably as much as 60 miles. The line of most recent activity within the zone is quite narrow, and sometimes can be reconized as a single break between different rock types. As long as there are fault movements, there will be earthquakes. Identifying fault features The three most common fault features are: 1. Scarps - steep cliffs or ridges formed by surface rupture. 2. Offset Streams - streams that cross the fault and turn at right angle follow the fault movement and then go down stream. 3. Sag Ponds - are enclosed, undrained areas within the fault zone. Sag ponds can be seen all along the fault. NOC NEWS - October

San Andreas fault crosses Hwy 15 in Cajon Pass and is visable on the way to Las Vegas. If you want to view it: 1. Exit Hwy15 at Kenwood turnoff. 2. Go left under Hwy Go right on old Route 66 past the blue cut marker. 4. You will see a scarp, the Lost Lake sag pond, and an offset steam that identifies the San Andreas fault. 5. You also will leave the Pacific Plate and enter the North American plate as shown by the Bronco below. Lost Lake Sag Pond Scarp Stream Offset Faul 6 News - October 2013

California Earthquakes Every year California has thousands of shocks. Five hundred strong enough to be felt by a significant number of residents. As of 9/23/2013 Southern California has had: earthquakes today (September 23, 2013) earthquakes in the past 7 days (week) earthquakes in the past month (Sep.) earthquakes in the past year (2013) List of Significant California Earthquakes San Diego Santa Barbara Channel Wrightwood Hayward San Francisco Penensula Colorado River Fort Tejon Hayward Lone Pine Crescent City San Diego County California Mexican Border Gilroy Mare Island Hemit Eureka Parkfield San Francisco Inyo County Coyote Eureka San Jacinto Eureka Cape Mendocino Santa Barbara Lompoc Long Beach El Centro Cape Mendocino Fish Creek Mountain Desert Hot Springs Kern County Eureka Borrego Mountains Santa Rosa San Fernando Oroville Imperial Valley Humboldt County Coalinga Morgan Hill Whittier Narrows Superstition Hills Loma Prieta Cape Medocino Landers Northridge Hector Mine San Simeon Alum Rock Chino Hills Eureka Borrego Springs Between 1800 and 2010, in 210 years - 53 significant earthquakes occured for a 4 year average interval San Fernando Orville Imperial Valley Humboldt County Coalinga Morgan Hills Whittier Narrows Superstition Hills Loma Prieta Cape Medocino Landers Northridge Between 1971 and 1994 in only 23 years 12 significant earthquakes occurred for a 2 year average interval: DOES THIS MEAN THAT THE BIG ONE IS OVERDUE? 8 WGMS Field Trip Whittier Club Honey Onyx Claim November 2-3, 2013 by Jay Valle After the WGMS Show, our field trip is typically an outing to the Whittier Gem & Mineral Society s Honey Onyx Claim, located just east of Barstow. The honey onyx is still there but it is hard rock mining. If you have any or have seen it, you know that it is well worth the effort involved. Usually we use our Claim as a base of operations (campers and tailers) for daily field trips to the surrounding collecting areas. The access to the camp area requires unlocking a combination lock and opening a locked gate. You will find a combination lock on the gate. The combination is After you pass through the gate, you must lock it behind you. Follow the W or PLS signs to camp. There will be guided field trips on both Saturday and Sunday and we will leave from the Oak Tree Inn (each day) at 8:00-8:30 AM. To get to the Oak Tree Inn, take the Ghost Town Rd exit off the 15 freeway, turn right, turn right again and go past the gas station, and you will seeth the Inn on the right.saturday evening we will meet at Peggy Sue s Restaurant fo dinner. Materials which may be collected: Honey onyx, red moss agate, petrified wood & palm root, algae agate, and other unnamed agates, jasp-agates, jaspers, fossils, etc. Tools: Rock pick & bag for general collecting; Sledges, wedges, chisels, pry bars, etc. for those rockhounds who really want to get serious with the honey onyx. Supplies: Barstow is very close. For beginning rockhounds (without campers, trailers, etc.) you may wish to stay in a motel in town and drive to the Oaktree Inn each morning or stay at the Oaktree Inn. This is also an easy way to get to know the workings of a rock club field trip. Contact: Jay Valle at (626) for questions or further information. Information on the Oaktree Inn for those who would like to stay in a room for the two nights: Oaktree Inn Yermo Dr. Phone: (760) Take the Ghost Town Road Turnoff AARP or AAA Discount $79.75 per night Dinner is open 24 hours a day 8 News - October 2013

Not All Theives are Stupid! fom the October, 2013 RMFMS Newsketter 1. LONG-TERM PARKING Some person left their car in the long-term parking at San Jose while away, and someone broke into the car. Using the information on the car s registration inthe glove compartment, they drove the car to the people s home in Pebble Beach and robbed it. So, I guess if we are going to leave the car in long-term parking, we should NOT leave the registration/insurance cards in it, nor your remote garage door opener. This gives us something to think about with all our new electronic technology. 2. GPS Someone had their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard. When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen. The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents. 3. CELL PHONES This lady has changed how she lists her names on her cell phone after her handbag was stolen. Twenty minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says I received your text asking about our Pin number and I ve replied a little while ago. When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already with-drawn. The thief had actually used the stolen cell phone to text hubby in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account. Moral of the lesson: Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list. Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mom, etc. And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts, CONFIRM by calling back. Also, when you re being texted by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don t reach them, be very careful about going places to meet family and friends who text you. 4. PURSE IN THE SHOPPING CART A lady went grocery-shopping at a local mall and left her purse sitting in the children s seat of the cart while she reached something off a shelf...wait till you read the WHOLE story! Her wallet was stolen, and she reported it to the store personnel. After returning home, she received a phone call from the Mall Security to say that they had her wallet and that although there was no money in it, it did still hold her personal papers. She immediately went to pick up her wallet, only to be told by Mall Security that they had not called her. By the time she returned home again, her house had been broken into and burglarized. The thieves knew that by calling and saying they were Mall Security, they could lure her out of her house long enough for them to burglarize it. NOC NEWS - October
