They will likely have to rely on their charms to attract more people to the Lancaster area amusement park next year rather than state tourism promotion dollars. Gov. Ed Rendell's proposed budget calls for $11.2 million in state funding for tourism marketing, which is a $3 million cut from this year and a $21.2 million cut from two years ago. About 150 tourism industry representatives joined Duke and the princess at a Capitol Rotunda rally on Wednesday to call for the lost tourism promotion funds to be restored to at least $24 million. "Tourism cannot endure another budgetary cut," said Scott Bowzer, owner of the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire near Cornwall. "Tourism creates jobs." Industry representatives, including merchants and peasants from Bowzer's faire, came to Harrisburg to remind the General Assembly of the impact of tourism money as lawmakers get to work on next year's state budget. They said that conservatively, every $1 the state puts into tourism promotion translates to at least $25 in tax revenue derived from visitor spending. State Sen. Jane Earll, R Erie, said she understands that. "But the fact still is we don't have the money to invest, and I don't think anyone should be out there with any false hopes," she said. She said the funding restoration prospects are bleak and suggested even deeper cuts could be needed. The tourism industry is going to have to "get along for a year or two with more imaginative ways of promoting than cash," said Mickey Rowley, deputy secretary for tourism at the state's Department of Community and Economic Development. He said the state has increased its usage of social media tools like Facebook and Twitter to help get the word out about the state's tourist attractions and related services. They are helpful at a time when money for radio and TV ads is scarce, he said. This year, for the first time in years, he said the state is not promoting Pennsylvania tourism through radio, television or billboard outside the state. According to data from the U.S. Travel Association, three in every five states have cut spending on tourism promotion. Mary Smith, president of Hershey Harrisburg Regional Visitors Bureau, said larger tourist attractions such as Hersheypark can afford to do their own marketing, but "there are many that are far too small to be able to do some advertising on their own." That's the benefit of a regional tourism promotion agency, she said. Its marketing efforts can bring exposure to small companies such as Dee Fagan's Pheasant Field Bed and Breakfast in Middlesex Twp. At the rally, Fagan said her bed and breakfast opened 16 years ago and has grown from four guest rooms to 1

7 eight. She said she has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars into the local economy. Her business employs five part timers, and her guests visit art galleries, golf courses and restaurants. "If you listen to my story and multiply that times 785 for each of the B&Bs in Pennsylvania, you'll see Pennsylvania tourism means jobs to Pennsylvanians," she said. Pennsylvania boasts thousands of acres of natural woodlands that are perfect for a weekend camping trip or extended vacation. Add in a scenic or themed train ride on one of the state's famed rail systems, and it's a getaway treat for the entire family. Although campers are drawn to the outdoors by activities such as hiking, fishing, and swimming, train rides near some of Pennsylvania's campgrounds are sure to enhance the experience of the great outdoors for the little campers. Stony Fork Campground Campers and train enthusiasts alike will enjoy Stony Fork Campground and the nearby Tioga Central Railroad. With over 90 acres of scenic woodlands and 214 tent, RV, and cabin sites, Stony Fork is located near the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, also known as Pine Creek Gorge, a 47-mile long and 1,450-foot deep natural canyon. Campground activities include a swimming pool, fully stocked fishing streams and ponds, pedal boats, hiking on the Pine Creek Rail Trail, and special weekend activities for kids. The Tioga Central Railroad is just miles away from Stony Fork in the Wellsboro area. Its 34 miles of rails extend north from Pennsylvania to Corning, New York. Family-friendly rides include Dining Trains with meals or appetizer selections; the Ice Cream Express, a Friday night one-and-a-half-hour ride with make-your-own sundaes and a special souvenir cup; and the Santa Express offered in November, where children get to pick up Santa for a magical ride. For the time in many years, Bender spent last winter in her native Sweden. The impetus for the trip was family the body of work that emerged while she was there is unique. Bender, who works primarily in waterco that has its underpinnings in pencil drawings, took the stark light and raw winter landscape and created fresh and contemporary works. Using smaller format paper, which was given to her by a friend, these winter landscapes are minimalist and form a new contemporary aspect to her work. On view through 1 May. For those familiar with Bender s lush representations of the flora and fauna of the Mt. Gretna area, these never-before-exhibited works will provide an insightful contrast to those works, and help to unlock the artist s methodology. The second portion of the exhibit will focus on Bender s summer travels to Sweden. This portion of the exhibit will contrast to the winter scenes in that sparse scenes are infused with green blades of grass, bright spots of colorful wild flowers and unexpected details such as a branch full of leaves, a red mushroom or a few ripples in the water, allowing the viewer to sense the vastness of the sea, the calm of a meadow, a quiet front porch, or the coolness of a rock. Bender studied painting but found herself working in the field of journalism because she thought it was "safer." After studying as an exchange student in the US, Bender married and continued to live here. She is self-taught in watercolor and employs the traditional techniques; yet the artist allows herself freedom to explore the medium in new ways. As a teacher, she affords her students this freedom as well. Bender believes letting the watercolor bloom or leaving the work in what others would consider an unfinished state is an important experience for her as an artist as well as a teacher. The Demuth Museum, established in 1981, is dedicated to developing awareness, understanding and appreciation o artwork and legacy of Charles Demuth ( ). As a leader of the American Modernist movement, Demuth is known as a pioneer of the precisionist style and a master watercolorist. Located in the artist s former home and stud Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the Demuth Museum has a permanent collection of over 30 Demuth works, along with an extensive archive and library. The Demuth Tobacco Shop, the oldest operating shop of its kind in America, and othe historic buildings surround the museum; all are open to the public. All exhibits are supported in part by a grant from Pennsylvania Council for the Arts. The Demuth Museum is also supported by a grant from the Pennsylvania Historica Museum Commission.
