Central Coast Woodturners Of California CCW a chapter of American Assoc. of Woodturners Bill Kandler President Gordon Rowland Vice President Terry Cohen Treasurer Don Barr Librarian Newsletter Edit. George Paes Next Meeting Sat. Dec. 18th All meetings are held on 3rd Saturday of the month Newsletter for December Busy December Well here we are, close to end of a year, where did the time go. Seems like just yesterday we had our picnic and now it s time for the annual Holiday Luncheon. Here s the facts. It will be held on Sunday, December 12th at Steamers of Pismo Beach, gathering time about 12:45. If you haven t placed your meal request, now s the time, Its a choice of Tri Tip,Roast, Chicken or Salmon, cost per person is $26.00 Send your selection and check to Terry Cohen at 375 Plancha Way, Arroyo Grande, CA by the 4th of December. Be sure to list your choice. There will be a spouse drawing for the many demonstrator turned items, and spouses, be sure to bring your own samples of your creations. Last year there was a great array of goods, lets top it this year. Gordon Rowland has requested that if anyone hears of an upcoming demo in other chapters in our general vicinity that he be contacted and have him see if that demonstrator would be available to us. Odd Fellows Hall 520 Dana St San Luis Obispo

P A G E 2 Minutes from November Meeting Bill Kandler gave a recap on his participation at the 2nd Segmented Turners Symposium. Attendance is up and growing. Next problem is to make plans for future sessions. Bill s comment, If you think you have seen everything in segmented, be aware a lot more is coming. To our CCW members, Bill is a good resource for segmented turning info, Pick his brain. Current number of enrolled member is over 600 and growing. It must be noted that a 3rd segment of the Woodturners is the Ornamental Turners, guys like Gerald Davis and Ernie Miller attended their mini symposium in San Jose and should be able to bring us up to speed. Connie Calahan of Paso Robles is seeking a turner for some spindles for chairs, if interested call her at Laney Means of 37396Oakview St, Burney, CA has Manzanita Burls for sale. Challenge for December The January meeting site has been changed for this month ONLY to a Sawdust session at George Paes shop. It will be a good time for our advanced turners to help our rookies. Hear that, Barry, Ernie Mikes like in Magrill & Rude. Regular start time, 9:00 AM at 1240 West Tefft St, Nipomo, for directions call C E N T R A L C O A S T W O O D T U R N E R S O F C A L I F O R N I A

Show & Tell; Bill Kandler started off this portion of the meeting explaining how he has assembled two different patterns for his Segmented turnings. 1st was a Diamond pattern, some what like a Navajo set up. 2nd was a Wrapping snake arrangement, now all we can do is to wait and see what the finished products look like. The woods incorporated are Wenge, Maple & Bloodwood Gerald Davis Proudly showed his entry in a Lompoc Art festival in which he won FIRST PLACE for his Tremblar turning. Terry offered his Bark Edge Bowl of Osage Orange (Shown in bottom left) Don Barr showed us what you can do with a piece of Buckeye Burl that he has kicked around in his shop for a couple of years Bill Winchell with his Segmented creation of Maple, Birch &Purpleheart

Show & Tell Contd. Kenny Moore (left) got caught up with his finished piece which was a collaborative with Will Hanneman s pen and holder. Kenny, being resourceful, showed the Deer Antler pen mounted in a Ball and set on a Coaster, Two birds with one stroke. Kenny was glad to be back after missing the last meeting due to a cornea transplant Tom Bullock was sort of shy in showing his attempt in a Green wood turned lamp shade (ala Berger). His attempt was not photographed but he must be commended for the great attempt, Near the end of the turning that terrible gremlin popped up and a snag sent it to the floor resulting a crack. The wall thickness was comparable top Berger s. Challenge for December This could come in handy for those of you who have children or grand children or great grand children, It s a Baby rattle Note Terry, NOT A SNAKE

Maybe we can coax Gerald to bring his Rose Engine Lathe to the January Sawdust meeting Gordon Rowland gave us a view of what can be turned at the last minute while entertaining guests. His was multi beaded Redwood coaster. Will Hanneman showed his Texas Ebony and Rosewood.creations George Paes re-showed two Coasters from a past challenge along with this years version of two square with bead turned from Western Maple. There were more Coasters but your reporter failed to make the proper notes

Important announcements Chris Hanson from Santa Ynez has a contact in Lompoc who has Satine/Bloodwood for sale. If interested call Joel Gruenberg at Available are boards in 6 lengths of 4/4 5/4 6/4 & 8/4. Price is $7.00 per b/f. Olympia Peninsula will be holding a Mini Symposium the weekend of July 23rd. If interested go to opportunity for those of you who travel to Washington STATE. The next meeting of CCW will be held on December 18th, Odd Fellows Hall in SLO, starting time will be 9:00 AM. Those of you who have attended the last two meetings noted that we have a much bigger room with access to the kitchen NOTE The January meeting will be held as a SAWDUST SESSION in George s Shop as the hall had a prior reservation, This is for January only News has been received that Ken Ray is on the road to recovery after his fall and hip problem. Mike McGrill is also getting better after a quad bypass surgery. We wish both gents a speedy return to the lathe and future meetings. You still have time to get your reservations in for our annual Holiday Luncheon. Send or hand carry your check and menu choice to Terry Cohen. Don t forget your exchange gift, come with one, go home with one. Photo Gallery Continued Warren Hanson describing his method of turning Gerald Davis with Rose engine product
