EDGEFIELD COUNTY Founded in 1785, Edgefield County has played a large role in South Carolina s history. The county is best known for having produced ten governors and five lieutenant governors. GREENWOOD COUNTY Located in the center of the Old 96 District, Greenwood County has an abundance of history, culture, and outdoor recreational opportunities. 5 Before you have kids, it s tough to imagine yourself making promises you cannot possibly keep. Like assuring your 4-year-old daughter that you won t run into any skunks in the woods on your first camping trip together. You see, my daughter we ll call her Bear had never been camping before, but we had read all about it in Curious George Goes Camping. The goal was simple: get outdoors, roast a few marshmallows and spend some quality daddy-daughter time together. Finally, the day arrived and we headed to South Carolina s Freshwater Coast. We had a campsite reserved at one of the state parks in the Old 96 District. After checking-in at the park office, we pulled up to the campsite, hopped out and admired the scenery. We walked down to the lake and took a quick look around. The water was surprisingly calm. Then we returned to our site and setup camp. Once the tent was setup, Bear crawled inside. She looked around the tent, stuck her head out and said, Daddy, I need you to find a flower to make our tent pretty. When your daughter asks for a flower to decorate the tent you ll be taking down in less than 24 hours, it s so unexpected, so innocent, so tender, your heart does a backflip and you immediately start scanning the forest floor for color. The sun dropped behind the trees across the lake. It was getting dark quickly, so I hung the lantern and built a small fire. Then I taught Bear the delicate art of making S mores while asking her to shine the flashlight toward me while wiping the melted marshmallow off her hands. The darker it got the more eager she became about calling it a night and crawling inside the tent. After we read a couple of books together, she slowly started to wind down and eventually fell asleep and so did I. The sun rose, and Bear woke up. She was excited to get out of the tent and get the day started. I told her that she could sit by the fire and drink her apple juice while I loaded the car. Bear asked me several times to come sit down beside her. So that s what we did. I pulled our two chairs closer to the fire and we talked. It s good to sit beside the fire and get warm, she said. It sounded like a line from Hemingway or a bit of wisdom from my grandfather. But it came from my four-year-old daughter, and it was true. We finished our breakfast, packed up the car and departed. The trip had been a success. No rain or strong winds. No crying out for Mom in the middle of the night. While driving home, we passed fields and pastures that seemed untouched by time. I glanced in the rearview mirror. Bear had already nodded off. We rode home like that after our first camping trip together. Just Bear and me. 800/ South Carolina s Old 96 District Bear & Cam 5

10 THE MEANING OF THE NAME Old 96 District

11 Why is this area of South Carolina called the Old 96 District? Ninety Six. We are happy to say the locals believe Issaquena and David lived happily ever after. Or so the story goes! It is reported that our region was named after a judicial district dating back to the Colonial era when law and order came to the South Carolina backcountry. This district was 96 miles from the Cherokee Path around Keowee, a major Cherokee town in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains on the plot of land called South Carolina. Note: The above are legends and folklore. We do not guarantee the accuracy of this information. How did the name Ninety Six originate? Legend says that at one time there were nine creeks running east and west and six creeks running north and south. They came together at one central point. The locals named this point Ninety Six. The Cherokee Path was a primary trade route between the coast and the backcountry Indian villages, and these creeks seem to form near these villages. Along with many other Indian paths, several of the routes crossed near a trading post that was called Ninety Six. Hence, another numerical explanation for the name. We think the best legend of all is the tale of Issaquena, an Indian maiden. She fell in love with David Francis, a silversmith, who lived near what is now the town of Ninety Six. Learning that her tribe planned a surprise attack on the settlement, Issaquena mounted her horse to warn the settlers and her soulmate, David. Folks said it was 96 horse s paces from Issaquena s village to where David was living. Hence, another explanation for the name 800/ South Carolina s Old 96 District 11

17 To understand the true meaning of the Old 96 District, South Carolina, one must make their way through a tunnel of trees and back roads. As the road winds for miles and miles, you will pass through five counties in the western section of South Carolina. Along these roads, you will encounter beautiful unspoiled countryside of the Old 96 District. You will see six state parks, four pristine lakes, and several beautiful 18-hole championship golf courses all within the Old 96 District. There are hiking and biking trails spread throughout the counties. Many of them allow you to have magnificent views of our lakes. A few of our state parks have skeet shooting, which is quickly becoming a very popular sport for families, young and old. If you have never shot skeet before, you need to try it! If skeet shooting is not your fancy, then perhaps you would like to rent a kayak or a stand-up paddle board and explore our lakes. The coves of our well-preserved lakes offer you an opportunity to connect with nature as you spot all kinds of wildlife along the lake. Our lakes are not crowded, so you will have ample space to learn how to paddle the lake. Little River Blueway organization has prepared a map for your information at You don t have to worry about wakes from nearby boats. It is also a great, relaxing way to unwind from the day s activities. After having worked up quite an appetite, you may decide to check out a few local restaurants in the downtown and uptown areas of our district. And, don t forget we have five microbrew pubs in the district, with one making their own beer onsite. After a full day of adventures and good food, check out one of our many hotels, state parks, B&Bs or Inns for a good night s rest. 28 RELIVE HISTORY in the Old 96 District The Old 96 District of South Carolina is home to two Revolutionary War battles that played a significant role in the American Revolution. Ninety Six National Historic Site and Musgrove Mill State Historic Site were sites that impacted the quest for freedom. The Ninety Six National Historic Site was the site of the very first southern land battle of the Revolutionary War in November 1775 south of New England. This historic site is located off Interstate 26 at Exit 74. It is about 30 miles off the interstate. The park is located just outside of the town on Highway 248. The battle at Ninety Six was seeking to push the 28 British out of their last stronghold in South Carolina, American Gen. Nathanael Greene attacked on May 22, Anticipating Greene s arrival, Loyalists soldiers erected additional barriers atop the earthen walls of the fort and settled in for the longest field siege of the American Revolution. Greene s soldiers stormed the fort on June 17, 1781, in a last ditch attempt to win South Carolina s Old 96 District DiscoverSC.net

29 the battle. The troops commanded by Gen. Greene were forced to evacuate and suffered heavy losses, and eventually withdrew. In a surprising move, the Loyalists abandoned the fort and burned the town down. The visitors center offers audio tour rentals and a museum. Located off Interstate 26 near Clinton, South Carolina at Exit 54, Musgrove Mill State Historic Site, was the site of the 1780 American Revolutionary War Battle where British troops and Loyalists encountered a small detachment of Colonial Patriots. The Patriots were outnumbered, but by securing a high ground position, they lured the British troops and Loyalists into quick defeat. At the Musgrove Mill Visitors Center, one can listen to a short pre-recorded narrative of the battle aided by a large-scale relief map highlighting troop locations and movements by way of LED lighting. The site of the battle was the home of Edward Musgrove and it was used as a British encampment and his gristmill provided a source of food for the soldiers. There were rumors his daughter was a spy for the Patriots and would listen in on the British conversations as they camped on her father s land and then run to the Patriots camp to relay their plans. The Ninety Six National Historic site is an area of unique historical significance. There is always curiosity as to the origin of the name Ninety Six. There are several legends surrounding how Ninety Six got its name but the most popular one is a romanticized legend that revolves around an Indian maiden named Cateechee. It is told that she learned of an Indian attack and rode to warn her British boyfriend. As she traveled, she named the streams and found her boyfriend at a trading post near the 96th stream. By the mid-1700 s, European colonists found this outpost a favorable place to settle. During Ninety Six s early days, trouble with the Indians increased. In 1760, Cherokees twice attacked Fort Ninety Six, built for the settlers protection. Ninety Six village had reached its peak with a growing population, 12 houses, and a newly constructed courthouse and jail during this time. Throughout the war, this small trading post town of Ninety Six remained an important outpost for Loyalists. Here settlers struggled against the harsh backcountry to survive. It is easily accessible by hiking along the Battlefield Trail for about a quartermile. There are two separate interpretive trails that start at the Visitors Center parking lot and wind along the Enoree River. The trails offer views of where the old mill and home site used to be but unfortunately, washed away in And, one trail takes you along an ancient gully and features sites where the battle took place. 35 If a little quality family time is what you are looking for, then travel no further than the Old 96 District. Even your teens will put down their devices to melt marshmallows over the fire or paddle through clear, sun-kissed water lined with canopy of lush trees. Little ones will smile when she feeds the goats at the local farm or bests dad in an archery competition. There is a large array of activities to do at any of the six state parks in the Old 96 District, such as camping, archery, hiking, fishing, and kayaking. Friendly and knowledgeable park rangers will help you with many activities in the state park. Trying archery for the first time? The park ranger will show you how to shoot the bows and give you a few tips on hitting the target every time. If you are in the mood for a smaller target, try skeet shooting. Rangers instruct you on how to handle and shoot the guns. It s safety first for the novice and even the experienced shooter. You will get several skeets at each location on the course at varying speeds and heights. Once you understand the course and mastered your aim, skeet shooting may be your favorite part of the trip. Skeet and archery are great for a little family competition. But why let the day end there? It wouldn t be a great trip to the Old 96 without canoeing the Freshwater Coast. With 4 lakes covering 110,000 acres of water and over 2,000 miles of shore line, you will be in no hurry to get back to the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
