This seaside resort, once a village of fishermen and stonemasons, today makes an interesting holiday destination with a tradition of tourism reaching back more than a century. Selce has won many awards for the excellence of its tourism offer and the overall appearance of the town. It has also won the title of best holiday resort on Kvarner four times. In addition, it came second twice and first once (in 2002) in the Blue Flower campaign organised by the Croatian National Tourist Board for the best holiday resort on the Adriatic. Selce is a perfect place for pleasant summer holidays, with well-tended Blue Flag beaches, a wonderfully clean sea, a seaside promenade, and many cultural, entertainment and sporting events (folklore, concerts, painting exhibitions, fish festivals on the waterfront, sportfishing for visitors, sailing regattas and much more). The town also has a diving centre with diving school and various water sport facilities. Selce can accommodate several thousand visitors in private homes and hotels, holiday villas and two campsites set amidst the area s beautiful natural scenery and crystal clear sea. INFO: Selce Tourism Society Šetalište Ivana Jeličića 1, Selce, Tel: +385 (0) , fax: +385 (0) td-selce@tzg-crikvenice.hr POSITION Crikvenica is located in Kvarner Bay in the Adriatic Sea, about thirty kilometres from the town of Rijeka, the centre of the Primorje and Gorski kotar region. The Crikvenica Riviera includes Crikvenica itself and a string of smaller resorts Selce, Dramalj and Jadranovo. The town area extends over ca. thirty square kilometres of the mainland and the waters of the Vinodol Channel. Its excellent geographical position and good traffic connections are two of the main reasons why tourism began developing here more than one century ago. The Crikvenica area can be easily reached from many towns throughout Central Europe. Apart from by road, Crikvenica can also be easily reached by sea or by air. Boat owners can find moorings in the central town harbour or in some of the small ports in the area. The nearby marina in Punat on the island of Krk provides winter mooring services. The island of Krk also hosts Rijeka Airport, only twenty kilometres from Crikvenica. CLIMATE Crikvenica is sheltered from strong winds by the slopes of the Kapela mountain range to the north and by the island of Krk to the south. This favourable position gives the local climate a combination of Mediterranean and continental features. Predominant, however, is the mild, stable Mediterranean climate, characterised by many hours of sunshine and the presence of currents of both mountain and sea air. The summers here are dry, clear and pleasantly warm. The winters are cloudy and rainy, yet relatively mild with balmy local breezes. The average temperature in winter is ca. 9 C, and in summer around 23 C. Snow, fog and temperatures under 5 C are rather rare. The sea air is noted for its cleanliness and for containing dispersed trace elements that are beneficial to human health, but only a minor concentration of harmful pollen allergens and waste gases. The beneficial effects of the local air are further boosted by high percentages of ozone, chlorine, sodium and iodine. A salinity of 4% and continuous currents from south-east to north-west make the seawater here particularly clear. Average sea temperatures in summer reach from 23 C in June to 27 C in July and August.

6 RICH HISTORY For centuries, the area around today s Crikvenica Riviera has witnessed periods of war and peace, reign of various rulers, and the establishment of new governments and boundaries. It has been a meeting point of different languages and alphabets, different cultures and civilisations, from the times of the Liburnians and the Romans, through the Hungarian and Austrian periods, right up to the present day. Traces of this are still visible in the area s remnants of settlements, burial mounds and defensive dry-stone walls, or in the weapons, jewellery, ceramics and specific amphorae that have been found here. Less tangible traces of these civilisations also still exist, in barbarian curses, the Pauline prayers, weeping of local labourers, in the jokes and songs of the fishermen... The best-known map of the Roman Empire, the Tabula Peutingeriana from the 3rd century AD, whose medieval copy from the 12th century has been preserved and named after Konrad Peutinger who owned it in the 16th century, indicates the position of a station in the northern part of the Liburnian coast between Tarsatica (today, Rijeka) and Senia (Senj). This station, marked on the map as Ad Turres, had a military garrison that protected the entire local area and the important Roman road that connected the north of Italy (the town of Aquileia), through Tergesta (Triest) and Tarsatica (Rijeka), with Dalmatia. In the area of Ad Turres at the turn of the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD was the workshop of Sextus Metilius Maximus with facilities for producing ceramic items. For the effective operation of such a workshop, some essential natural requirements had to be met: closeness to the source of the raw material (clay pits), availability of freshwater, large amounts of combustible material (firewood) and, finally, proximity to a road or sea route. Crikvenica fulfilled all these prerequisites. The history of Crikvenica, Dramalj, Jadranovo and Selce was closely intertwined with the development of the nearby fertile valley of Vinodol and its medieval fortified towns of Drivenik, Grižane and Bribir. During the Middle Ages, each of these towns had its own harbour on the coast, which led to the development of fishing villages around them. The stone houses were built in a very specific way, characterised by vaults and small courtyards enclosed by high stone walls. Between these walls wind narrow lanes, just wide enough for two people to go by. Today we can still find remnants of the work of the area s skilled bricklayers and stonemasons, who often had to earn their bread far from home. The Crikvenica area also produced many skilled fishermen, and the beginning of the 20th century saw the rapid rise of tourism as the primary economic activity. This stagnated, however, in the period between the two world wars, and during the Croatian Homeland War in the 1990s. But a new era of social and economic prosperity began in 1993 with the establishment of the Town of Crikvenica as a local government within the independent Republic of Croatia. info@tzg-crikvenice.hr CRIKVENICA Before the area of the present town became populated, people lived in the hinterland, around Kotor on a nearby hill. The name Kotor comes from the Latin name Ad turres, which was translated as kid tor (at the towers) by the Croats after their arrival. The parish of Kotor used to be part of the small medieval town of Grižane. Local people engaged in agriculture, livestock breeding and fishing, and learned to grow vines from the Roman people domiciled here. In 1225, the noble family of Frankopan came into possession of the Vinodol parish and continued to rule the area until the Croatian noblemen Petar Zrinski and Fran Krsto Frankopan were executed in Wiener Neustadt in Under the Frankopan rule, the free citizens of the towns in the Vinodol area compiled the Vinodol Law, the first Croatian legal document. This was in 1288, at a time when many parts of Europe were still regarded as barbarian. People from the Vinodol area used to trade goods between the coast and the hinterland on carriages, an activity locally known as kirijašenje. This is why the people from Crikvenica are sometimes called Kirci, although they never actually engaged in such activities. In 1412, Nikola IV Frankopan renovated the old church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and built a monastery, and gave it to the Pauline monks, which was confirmed by a deed of donation in which the name of Crikvenica was first mentioned in an official document. In the following centuries, until the Pauline order was abolished in 1786, Paulists, also sometimes known as the white friars because of their white habits, played an important role in almost all areas of life of local people. Paulists knew the Glagolitic alphabet and Glagolitic liturgical books and were meritorious for education and spreading literacy among children. They cultivated music, arts, and philology and played an important role in the local economy because they owned arable land in the plain of Crikvenica and watermills and a sawmill on the stream of Dubračina. They also had the right to levy income from trade across the entire coastal area of Crikvenica. After the abolishment of the Pauline order, their monastery today the Hotel Kaštel had various functions and was converted several times, which is why today there are no traces of the monastery architecture. Unlike the monastery, the former Pauline church preserved many works of art and traces of renewals from different style periods. These all attest to the

RICH HISTORY 7 devotion of the Paulists and local people to the Virgin Mary, who had been worshipped in the Dubračina area from the early Middle Ages. Major settlement of Crikvenica as we know it today started in the 17th century, especially in 1776 after fire devastated a great part of Kotor. Among the destroyed buildings was the parish church of St. Simon, which led to the centre of the parish moving to Crikvenica. This was a period when the Turks and Venetians no longer posed any threat, making life along the coast much safer. But due to the lack of arable land, people from Crikvenica soon started turning more towards the sea and quickly gained a reputation as the best fishermen in the northern Adriatic. They became known as Saragari because of their skill at catching small oily fish, mostly pilchards, locally called sarag. In the mid-19th century, local people started migrating to other continents, particularly well-known being the groups of fishermen who settled in San Pedro and Seattle. People from Crikvenica were also widely known as skilled stonemasons and bricklayers. At the end of the 19th century, Crikvenica was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. A period of intense tourism development especially health tourism followed the construction of the first wooden swimming baths in 1888 and the hotels Therapia (1895) and Miramare (1906). With the development of steam ships and passenger traffic to Rijeka, Crikvenica became more easily accessible and thus better known among tourists from the nearby areas and abroad. Over time, as its reputation for tourism continued to grow, Crikvenica became one of the leading holiday resorts on the Adriatic and a popular destination for many generations of visitors. DRAMALJ In the beginning, Dramalj was a fishing harbour surrounded by olive groves owned by people who lived in the valley of Tribalj. It was first mentioned only at the beginning of the 18th century, when it was permanently populated and known as Zagorje-Dramalj. The settlement formed and then began to grow around the small church of St. Helen, which was renovated and expanded at the beginning of the 19th century. This church was built on the spot of an old chapel, which had been converted in the Baroque style and expanded in the 18th century, when Dramalj was a chaplaincy of the parish of Belgrad. In 1796, a famous artist from Rijeka, Giuseppe Capovilla, made a marble altar for this church. The Parish of St. Helen was founded in 1809, but the Parish House and the Church of St. Helen were only built after Mate Balas, the parish priest at that time, used his own money and the contributions of his parishioners to initiate construction of the new church. The interior of the church was decorated in the 19th century: the pulpit in 1837, and the main altar in The town was soon renamed Sveta Jelena (St. Helen), after the church, but after World War Two got its old name back again Dramalj. In the immediate vicinity of the church is the House of Culture, which hosted the first people s library (founded in 1939). Construction of the first tourist accommodation facilities began between the two world wars. Over the following years, Dramalj grew into a resort that particularly appeals to weekenders and holidaymakers. JADRANOVO A favourable local climate and an interesting location on the coast were what attracted people to Jadranovo in ancient times. The oldest preserved traces of human settlements here date back to the Early Stone Age ( BC). In the Early Iron Age, the cove of Lokvišće in the present Jadranovo area was used as a shelter and a harbour for the Drivenik fort. Archaeological research in recent years in the cove of Lokvišće has revealed traces of a more ancient archaeological layer with remnants of items from the period between the end of the 2nd century BC and mid-1st century BC. A large number of broken amphoras indicates that wine and oil were produced in the area. In the Middle Ages, Jadranovo was known as Sveti Jakov (St. James) and was a littoral property and harbour of Drivenik Castle and Municipality. The end of the 18th century saw the arrival of settlers from the Drivenik area, who established several hamlets in the surroundings of the old church of St. James. The new centre of the parish developed around the renovated and expanded church of St. James. Most people from Sveti Jakov made their living from fishing, predominantly tuna fishing, but some of them were also skilled bricklayers. In the 17th century, the tuna lookout posts around Crikvenica and in Selce were owned by administrators of the Zrinski noble family estates, but later these lookout posts were managed by various tenants. The only preserved tuna lookout post in the Crikvenica area is located in Jadranovo. The first tourists came here in the 1930s. Since then, Jadranovo has developed into a popular holiday resort with many regular guests. Jadranovo today includes several scattered hamlets (Ivani, Kloštar, Katun, Neriz, Smokovo, Šiljevica etc.), and has managed to preserve its identity and coastal village charm despite the newly built properties and tourism development.

8 RICH HISTORY SELCE The oldest traces of human dwellings in the area surrounding Selce were found on the nearby hill of Sv. Juraj (St. George). The plateau on this hill is enclosed by a stone mound that was created by the demolition of the massive prehistoric wall. The settlement was located inside the stone wall, which once reached three metres in height. However, traces of this settlement have been erased by the passing centuries and washed away by rain. The early Romanesque church on the Sv. Juraj hillfort was originally an early Byzantine guard-house. The advantages of a natural harbour and the beautiful landscape of the local area were also appreciated by the Romans. The amphorae that were found in the cove of Jasenova south of Selce attest to the existence of an ancient port here; there was also a larger settlement in Roman times whose name remains unknown to this day. By the end of the 6th century AD, Croatian tribes had penetrated the area along the Roman roads from the north-west. These tribes adopted some of the skills of the Roman population that they encountered here, such as vine-growing. In the Middle Ages, Selce was famous for its good vineyards. In addition to agriculture and cattle breeding, local people gradually took up fishing and sea-faring. Then, in the 13th century, Selce, as part of the Old Croatian municipality of Bribir, came into the possession of the Frankopan noble family. Due to its position in a naturally sheltered cove, Selce gained importance as the venue for accepting and handling of goods and played an increasingly important role in trade. In 1572, Selce and almost the entire Vinodol estate was taken over by the Zrinski family. They encouraged trade by land and sea routes, which led to a more intense development of the trade harbour in Selce. Local people traditionally engaged in vine and olive growing, sheep breeding and tuna fishing. Olives were processed in three olive mills. In addition to fishing, people from Selce in the 19th century also engaged in sea-faring and trade: at the end of the century, there were ca. twenty large sailing ships for the transport of wine, oil and other goods. The end of the 19th century saw the construction of the first public baths in Selce. This was also when the first accommodation facilities were being opened to visitors, marking the beginning of hospitality and tourism here, which over time became the town s main business. JURAJ JULIJE KLOVIĆ Julije Klović, or Don Giulio Clovio de Croatia ( ), was a great artist of the late renaissance period and the leading exponent of the European miniature. He was born in the small village of Grižane in the Vinodol area of Crikvenica s hinterland. He spent most of his life abroad, working for popes and cardinals, kings and dukes. Upon the order of his patrons, he illuminated numerous manuscripts, missals, breviaries and prayer books. He also produced a large number of drawings and graphics. Several self-portraits are also attributed to him. In 1546, after nine years of effort, he finished his masterpiece, the Officium Virginis or Časoslav Farnese for Cardinal Alessandro Farnese.Although art history makes no record of his youth and early schooling, local tradition of his birthplace says that he was a talented boy who obtained first knowledge of painting in Crikvenica s Pauline monastery. When he was eighteen years old, he went to Venice and then to Rome, Mantua and Buda. But he retained vivid memories of his homeland of Vinodol throughout his entire life, and used these motifs in his genial miniatures. Klović died in Rome in 1578 and was buried in the church of San Pietro in Vincoli. His grave is close to Michelangelo s statue of Moses. The inscription on his tombstone reads that here lies Julije Klović from Croatia. In the roofed passage leading to the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Crikvenica there is a permanent exposition dedicated to Juraj Julije Klović. info@tzg-crikvenice.hr

WHAT TO SEE 9 CRIKVENICA The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the oldest preserved church in Crikvenica. Together with the former Pauline monastery in its immediate vicinity, it represents the old part of the town. Nikola IV Frankopan had it built in The Church of St. Anthony of Padua The foundation stone for this church was laid in The church was consecrated in 1939, but the impressive 35 m-high belfry was only finished in the first decade of the 21st century. The Russian Orthodox Church was built in 1924 on the initiative of Russians who had fled to Crikvenica after the October Revolution. The church is dedicated to St. Nicholas and was constructed in the typical style of Russian church architecture. It has been closed for many years. The Zvonko Car Atelier is located near the Crikvenica Town Beach. Zvonko Car ( ) was a student of the famous Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović and the creator of many valuable works of art. These include the stone statue of the Mother of God in front of the parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the bust of Juraj Julije Klović-Croata in Drivenik, the bust of the writer Vladimir Nazor, the bronze statue of the Girl with the Seagull in Opatija and many more. A monument to the prominent politician, founder of the Croatian Peasant Party and publicist Stjepan Radić ( ) is located in the park that bears his name in the centre of Crikvenica. A stone memorial book naming the people from Crikvenica who were killed in World War Two, a monument to the partisans and a memorial tomb are located in the Park of the Fallen Soldiers in the centre of Crikvenica. In Stjepan Radić Park are monuments to Nikola Car-Črni ( ), national hero and one of the initiators of the anti-fascist struggle in Vinodol, and the antifascists Dr. Ivan Sobol ( ) and Franjo Car ( ). The bronze statue of a fisherman, a work by the sculptor Zvonko Car, was erected in Crikvenica harbour to commemorate the fishermen of Crikvenica. The Sundial, awarded by the Croatian Tourist Association to the best holiday resorts in the 1970s, was won by Crikvenica in It is located in Stjepan Radić Park. An interesting and original fish sculpture, by the architect and painter from Crikvenica, Zdravko Gržičić, can be seen in Stjepan Radić Square. This fine example of the sculptor s work symbolises the strong link that local people have with the sea. Olive Mill - Toš, located in Frankopanska Street, is a reminder of the past times when people from Crikvenica tended olive groves in the surrounding areas and on the island of Krk. The weather station was founded in It is located in Stjepan Radić Park and continuously records temperature and other meteorological data. It is a valuable part of the local historical and cultural heritage. Kalvarija (Calvary), a hill on the top of Jurišićeva Street, is both a religious monument and a vantage point. It was named after the hill where Jesus Christ was crucified. In 1895, a statue of Christ was erected here. The AQUARIUM is located in the centre of Crikvenica. In its pleasant ambience of ca. 200 m2 live more than hundred fish species from the Adriatic Sea (moray, dogfish, red scorpionfish, dusky grouper etc., ca. fifty tropical fish species (angelfish, clownfish, blowfish, zebrafish etc.) and several freshwater fish species, the most interesting being piranha and neonfish. The Aquarium also includes a souvenir shop offering a wide range of items for sale.

10 WHAT TO SEE DRAMALJ The church of St. Helen was built on the spot of an old chapel, which had been converted in the Baroque style and expanded in the 18th century, when Dramalj was a chaplaincy of the parish of Belgrad. In 1796, a famous artist from Rijeka, Giuseppe Capovilla, made a marble altar for this church. The interior of the church was decorated in the 19th century: the pulpit in 1837, and the main altar in In the immediate vicinity of the church is the House of Culture, which was built from 1925 to 1928 and hosted the first people s library (founded in 1939). JADRANOVO The oldest cultural monument here is the archaeological site of Lokvišće from the Roman era, which has the remnants of several ancient buildings. Apart from this archaeological site, the cove of Lokvišće is noted for the balneological qualities of its natural medicinal mud. The Church of St. James the Apostle was built in the first decade of the 19th century. Based on available documents and the overall appearance of the church, it can be assumed that it was built in several phases. The chapel of St. James the Hermit was constructed first. The nave of the church was added in 1812 due to the effort of Father Mate Balas. The Parish of Šiljevica was established in 1806 on the initiative of Bishop Ježić of Senj and Modruš. info@tzg-crikvenice.hr The Church of St. James was built of stone in the Romanesque style. It is oriented in the east-west direction, with the main altar on the east, and façade towards west. The wooden statue of St. James, patron saint of the village, is more than 350 years old and is placed on the main altar. Apart from this statue, there are also the statues of Saints Fabian and Sebastian and Saints Peter and Paul in the middle of the altar. Several votive chapels have also been added over the years by local people in gratitude for various occasions. The old tuna lookout post symbolises the local tradition of fishing and is one of the few such posts that have remained preserved throughout the Kvarner region. SELCE Parish Church of St. Catherine This church was built in The main marble altar is the work of the famous master from Rijeka, Pietro Rizzi. The painter Giovanni Fumi, of Venetian origin, created the painting of St. Catherine, located above the tabernacle. The ceiling in the sanctuary was painted in 1910 by Ferdinand Ludwig from Senj. The organ and the baroque stone baptistery, which is now located beneath the choir, were transferred here from the old church. This church also holds a baroque reliquary of St. Catherine. Chapel of St. Catherine This little church, located in a small, secluded park, is thought to date back to the pre-romanesque period. In the 15th century it was already rather dilapidated. After renovation in 1498, it was consecrated anew by the bishop of Modruš. Chapel of St. Joseph This was originally the sanctuary of the baroque single-nave church of St. Catherine. The church altar, the former main altar of the baroque church of St. Catherine, was made by Jacopo Businello and Antonio Capovilla. Their work was influenced by the Venetian masters who had built several baroque gold altars in this area. 11 WHAT TO SEE 11 y e s e. n y f e e d Chapel of Saint Fabian and Saint Sebastian Located outside the village, near the crossing of the main coastal road and the road to Bribir, this chapel is dedicated to the two patron saints offering protection from plague and cholera. It was built in the mid-19th century in a historicist, neo-baroque style. Chapel of St. George It is assumed that the oldest part of this church was built in the pre- Romanesque period (9th-11th centuries AD) on the spot of a Late Antiquity military guardhouse. It is dedicated to St. George, the most popular medieval saint, who is often connected to the pre-christian pagan tradition of Green George, which symbolises the arrival of spring. Selce Library The Public Reading Room in Selce, forerunner of the present library, was established in The library today hosts two valuable collections: the first is the legacy of Ivan Lončarić Papić (the Younger), a chronicler and prominent personality from Selce, and the other is the collection of Dr. Vinko Antić, which among other items includes material about the great Croatian writer Janko Polić Kamov. Olive mill (Toč) The last olive mill in Selce was built using stones from the nearby Roman ruins, probably in the 18th century. It consists of a monolithic stone wheel, a press for crushing the olives, stone vessels for the oil, and various wooden vessels. Today this is an interesting and valuable monument to the local tradition of olive-growing. The building with its completely preserved equipment has long been an art gallery. All water sources in the area are locally known as polača. The last of these with a dedicated washing area is located beneath the church of St. Catherine and represents an interesting example of traditional local architecture. On the wall next to the source is a mosaic by the painter Hajrudin Kujundžić, representing a woman from Selce in folk costume. CRIKVENICA TOWN MUSEUM The Crikvenica Town Museum is located on Preradovićeva Street in the very centre of the town. The museum collects tangible and intangible heritage from the areas of Crikvenica, Dramalj, Jadranovo and Selce, and then categorises it and divides into individual categories. 12 12 WHERE TO STAY Hotels surrounded by verdant Mediterranean vegetation, air-freshened by the sea and set right next to beautiful beaches offer a variety of sporting facilities as well as cultural and entertainment programmes. In addition to a selection of healthy Mediterranean food, our hotels also offer the traditional dishes of the Crikvenica Riviera. The first hotel in Crikvenica, the Archduchess Clotilda, which opened in 1891, marked the beginning of a tradition of tourism and hospitality that has continued developing for generations until the present day. Apart from its hotels, some small and intimate, others large, within whose walls an eventful history of hosting aristocratic parties has given rise to many interesting stories, Crikvenica Riviera also offers accommodation in private rooms and apartments, villas, traditional stone houses, holiday homes, guesthouses, bungalows and campsites in Selce and Dramalj. Jadranovo only offers private accommodation, mostly right by the sea. Frankopan cake is a typical speciality of the Crikvenica area. It recalls the era when members of the noble Frankopan family ruled the Vinodol region. The recipe for the cake was reconstituted at the beginning of the 1990s in the Institute for Ethnology and Folklore in Zagreb on the basis of a cookery book from 1686 by the duchess Eleonora Maria Rosalia von Eggenberg. The cake can be sampled in the café of the Hotel International in the centre of Crikvenica.

18 HEALTH TOURISM The area s utter suitability for the development of health tourism had been noticed as early as the 19th century, especially its beneficial Mediterranean climate and microclimate, fresh air, clean sea, and beautiful unspoilt natural surroundings. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, two of Crikvenica s large hotels the Archduke Joseph (today the Therapia) and the Miramare were the first to open hydropathic establishments. That period also saw the opening of a number of health institutions for adults and children (Ladislav s Children s Home, Czech Colony, Mojmir etc.), and dedicated sanatoriums (Dr. Seidl Sanatorium, Villa Ružica Teacher s Sanatorium etc.). The area s Health Commission was established according to the new Law on Health Care on the 25th of March 1906, the same year that Crikvenica was officially declared a climatic health and sea resort. The Primorka Recovery Centre for Convalescent Children was opened in the former building of the Czech Colony in Then in 1960 the Institute for Adult Thalassotherapy, for the prevention and rehabilitation of upper and lower respiratory tract diseases, was opened in the Hotel Therapia. In 1967, the Institute for Thalassotherapy Crikvenica and the Primorka Recovery Centre merged into one hospital, known as Thalassotherapia Crikvenica since The medical part of the Thalassotherapia consists of four departments: Department for Children, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, and the Pulmonary-Internal Department. In September 2009, the Polyclinic for Baromedicine OXY was opened within the Thalassotherapia, the only such centre in the Kvarner region. The polyclinic focuses on curing various types of disease, speeding up recovery from sporting injuries or after extreme physical effort, improving physical fitness in athletes, diving preparation and emergency cases. Of the private health institutes in the area, particularly important are the Policlinics Katunar in Crikvenica, which includes a medical clinic for tourists and offers various specialist services, and the Policlinics Terme Selce in Selce, which offers numerous therapeutic and prevention programmes, especially in the fields of physical medicine and rehabilitation of sport injuries. info@tzg-crikvenice.hr THALASSOTHERAPIA CRIKVENICA Gajevo šetalište 21, Crikvenica, Telephone: , fax: info@thalasso-ck.hr Clinic for Baromedicine OXY Clinic Crikvenica Gajevo šetalište 21, Crikvenica, tel/fax: +385 (0) poliklinika.ck@oxy.hr TERME SELCE 1. prilaz I. In 1900, the Society for the Embellishment of Crikvenica and Surroundings established a meteorological station, which is today one of the three oldest such stations in Croatia. In 1910, Czech Marie Steyskalová, with the help of her associate Berta Drgáčova, founded the Czech Colony (Česka detska ozdravovny Marie Steyskalove) in Crikvenica, a health and convalescence centre for poor Czech and Slovak children. Until 1948, many scrofulous, anaemic, weak and asthmatic Czech and Slovak children came here for healing and convalescence. The property had its own baths, pool with warm and cold seawater, play areas, gym, x-ray machine, various devices for physical therapy, and a laboratory. The centre could accommodate about 400 children.

BEACHES 21 FROM SECLUDED CORNERS TO SANDY PARADISE The first public wooded swimming baths in Crikvenica were constructed in 1888, marking the beginning of the era of modern tourism. Over time, more and more attention was given to maintenance and up-keep of the beaches. Today the beaches of the Crikvenica Riviera are known for their exceptional beauty, crystal clear seawater, and an abundance of Mediterranean plants growing alongside well-tended footpaths. Moreover, the beaches are well diversified and offer a variety of facilities. Long sandy and pebble beaches, numerous peaceful coves and romantically secluded natural beaches, sport and recreational facilities, children s playgrounds, a variety of bars and restaurants, and a wide range of cultural and entertainment programmes that at night turn the beaches into quite magical stages. The beaches of the Crikvenica Riviera really do have plenty to offer, justifying exactly why this area has often been declared the riviera with the best beaches Thanks to the high-quality cleanliness of the sea, the beaches in Crikvenica (Balustrada, Town Beach), Dramalj (Omorika) and Selce (Poli mora, Rokan, pools of the Hotel Varaždin) have for several years been awarded the Blue Flag, the well-established European certificate of excellence. Beach for the Disabled The Crikvenica Town Beach is accessible to people with disabilities and includes a ramp for entering the sea and sanitary facilities with the Euroblock locking system. To the delight of animal lovers, in July 2010 Crikvenica got its first beach for pets, which is located next to the port of Podvorska on top of the breakwater. In addition to an information board explaining the rules of behaviour, in 2011 it is planned to construct special canopies offering protection from direct sunlight. Admission to this beach is free.

22 BEACHES CENTRAL TOWN BEACH - THE PRIDE OF CRIKVENICA ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT The Murvica Municipal Company is responsible for cleaning the beach every day during the bathing season. The beach is equipped with waste bins and dedicated areas for disposing of recycling materials such as paper, ALU and PET packaging. Environmental information is clearly displayed for all users of the beach. The beach s eco-centre contains information about the Blue Flag criteria applied by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and the Lijepa naša Since the beginning of tourism on the Crikvenica Riviera, its particular pride has been the main town beach. Being entirely natural, Crikvenica Town Beach has inevitably been changed over recent decades by the effects of waves and sea currents. Above the waterline it is now a mix of fine sand and pebbles, and below it, the sea is shallow with fine, golden-yellow sand. Crikvenica s favourable position, sheltered from strong winds, gives it a mild, relaxing climate. The summers here are pleasantly warm without significant variation between the average annual maximum and minimum air temperatures. The annual average temperature is 14.2 C, while the average summer temperature is 23.6 C. In high season, the sea temperature can reach up to 27 C. Sea air is distinctive for its purity and dispersed trace minerals that are beneficial to human health, as well as for its absence of harmful pollen allergens and polluting gases. The TWH index (temperature, wind speed and humidity ratio) is very favourable here throughout the year. The area s favourable climatic and ecological conditions have been attracting tourists here for health reasons for more than a century. Crikvenica was officially declared a climatic health and sea resort in CAPACITY OF THE CRIKVENICA TOWN BEACH Beach area: 30,584 m2 (onshore part) 69,816 m2 (offshore part) Length: 1,837 m Width: from 12 to 68 m Number of cabins to rent: 6 WC: 22 (4 for people with disabilities) Showers: 48 Capacity: ca. 5,000 people info@tzg-crikvenice.hr Association. The parking or driving of cars is not allowed on the beach. Car parking is regulated by the municipal decision on traffic regulation. Murvica is also in charge of maintaining plants and parks in the beach area. QUALITY OF THE SEA AND COAST The quality of seawater meets the requirements of the EU Directive on bathing water quality (Council Directive 76/160, EEC, 1975) and the Regulation on Quality Standards for seawater on the beaches and other relevant regulations applicable at national and local levels. Seawater samples are taken every 14 days at four locations along the beach and the results are published on local notice boards. The Town of Crikvenica and the Murvica Municipal Company control the sewerage system, which is in line with the EU wastewater directive. PUBLIC INFORMATION The public is informed every day about actual or possible beach pollution. During the bathing season, the Crikvenica Tourist Board and the management of the beach provide public information at two locations from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. SAFETY AND RESCUE SERVICES Rescue service is available daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from the 1 st of June to the 15 th of September (infotelephone ). In the immediate vicinity of the beach are numerous restaurants and café bars, hotels, the Jeličić Sports Centre, tourist agencies and the Polyclinic Katunar. THE BLUE FLAG MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN The Mediterranean Garden with a list of its plant species is a distinctive feature of this beach. The garden aims to promote awareness and educate the public about the importance of protecting Mediterranean plant species. TOWN BEACH CONCESSIONAIRE: THE MURVICA MUNICIPAL COMPANY The Blue Flag is an international ecological programme for sea and coast protection. Its primary goal is to foster sustainable development and management of the sea and the coast. The Blue Flag is the most recognised model of ecological education and informing the public about taking care of the sea and the coast, especially areas that are most exposed to risk of pollution, that is, beaches and marinas. The Blue Flag is an internationally renowned label and the key factor for many tourists when deciding about the destination for their holidays. The Blue Flag s intellectual property owner and international manager of the programme is the Foundation for Environmental Education FEE (Scandiagade 13, DK-2450 Copenhagen, Denmark, coordination@blueflag.org), which was established by the Council of Europe in At present, the programme encompasses ca. 30 European and ca. 10 non-european countries that rate tourism amongst their strategic goals. So far, more than 3,000 Blue Flags have been awarded across the world; more than 2,500 for beaches and more than 600 for marinas. The Blue Flag is only awarded for one season at a time, which means that candidate locations must be re-submitted every year in the prescribed manner. The Blue Flag programme is based on strictly defined criteria. In addition to national and international inspections during the season, visitors and users of Blue Flag beaches and marinas are encouraged to inform the FEE should they notice any violation of the criteria. In charge of implementing the programme in each individual country is an ecological association whose structure and programme meet the criteria for FEE membership. The national coordinator and manager of the Blue Flag project in Croatia is the Lijepa naša Association. Thanks to its high quality, Crikvenica s central town beach has been awarded the Blue Flag since

24 EVENTS Throughout the year, Crikvenica, Dramalj, Jadranovo and Selce host a variety of cultural, entertainment and sporting events, many of which have become traditional but are still getting better every time. During high season, there are fish, folklore and other traditional festivals all along this Riviera. Crikvenica and Dramalj also put on concerts of men s and women s klape traditional singing groups from all over Croatia. AD TURRES DAY In 2007, Crikvenica started hosting this culturaleducational event as a way of celebrating the area s rich architectural heritage. Originally named Antiquity Night, the event later got its present name after recent archaeological research showed that Ad Turres was the name for Crikvenica in Roman times, and that the history of the town dates back more than 2,000 years. The event evokes Roman times in a vivid, picturesque way, so that visitors can reexperience the atmosphere of ancient Crikvenica. It presents many aspects of everyday Roman life (clayprocessing, clothes, jewellery, hairstyles, perfumes, music, dance, food and drinks) and traditional crafts (pottery, basket-making, stone masonry, blacksmith s craft, producing frescoes and mosaics etc.). The festival also includes interesting lectures and educational workshops for adults and children (making laurel wreaths, painting fabric, filling amphorae with wine, clay-modelling, making mosaics and drawings with motifs from ancient times, and playing games from that era). Visitors also have the opportunity to enjoy specialities of the ancient gastronomy prepared to original recipes. FISHERMEN S WEEK For centuries, our ancestors in Crikvenica lived hard lives, trying to make the best of the barren stone landscape or sailing overseas in pursuit of their fortune. In the mid- 19th century, due to lack of fish in the Vinodol Channel, people from Crikvenica started migrating to America, Canada, Australia, Greece, Israel and Albania in search of new fishing grounds. Wherever they went, they taught their skills and knowledge to the indigenous people. Today s Crikvenica wants to draw the attention of new generations to the importance of this tradition. One small way in which the town pays tribute to fishing, once the most important activity in the area to which Crikvenica owes its development and very survival is Fishermen s Week, a festival that has been going on since It is also a way to acknowledge the persistence and endurance of our fishermen ancestors and to thank them for their contribution in creating the town s identity, one of the oldest events in the area, Fishermen s Week takes place every year at the end of August. Over time, the festival included more and more programmes and events, mostly connected to the sea. Fishermen s Week includes concerts, performances of theatrical and folklore ensemble, exhibitions, painting workshops, sporting competitions and other activities. Of particular interest are the various original gastronomic programmes in which local people prepare traditional fish dishes for their visitors. Then at midnight of the last day, a fireworks display marks the end of the festival and the arrival of autumn s quieter days... More information about Fishermen s Week may be found at info@tzg-crikvenice.hr

EVENTS 25 r, f t w e h l s l e t SPORT FEST In the early 1990s, Crikvenica hosted its first ever beach volleyball championship. Over the years, this turned into the Week of Sport and Entertainment and, eventually, in 2003, into the sporting and entertainment event known as Sport Fest. In addition to various sporting competitions on land and at sea, the festival also includes a wide range of other programmes for all age groups. Through Sport Fest, Crikvenica presents itself as a town that unites tourism with health through sport, a town that is open to everybody from professional athletes (who find excellent conditions here for preparing for competitions), to recreational hikers and visitors looking for simple relaxation. In previous years, the festival included tournaments in handball, football and beach volleyball, sailing regattas, water polo matches, and challenging wakeboard, jet ski and swimming competitions. The competitions take place at various locations across the town from the Town Beach to the Aquarium and are followed by concerts and entertainment programmes in the evenings. To find out more about Sport Fest, please visit CARNIVAL The Crikvenica Riviera s winter slumber receives a rather cheerful awakening with the arrival of carnival. It s a time for hosting numerous events, typified by the cheerful atmosphere and a great variety of colourful and imaginatively designed masks. Every year, as they make their way through the local villages, the carnival s participants sing and bang their drums loudly to chase away the spirits of winter and to summon spring back to life. Traditionally, masked parties take place on Saturdays, and tea parties with tombola on Sundays. There are also large carnival parades with groups from across the Kvarner area. On Ash Wednesday, local people read out the sentence, a text criticising the state of society and making fun of certain events. After that comes the burning of the Pust a puppet that gets held responsible for everything that has gone wrong in the previous year and that is named after actual social or political events in the area. Each year, masked groups from Crikvenica, Dramalj, Jadranovo and Selce participate in the International Carnival in Rijeka. In recent years, Dramalj has hosted the Summer Carnival at the end of July an event aimed at presenting the area s carnival traditions to its summertime visitors. More information about carnival in Crikvenica can be found at CRIKVENICA SEA GAMES During the main tourist season, Crikvenica s swimming baths host the Crikvenica Sea Games competitions in various sports between teams from Crikvenica and its neighbouring towns. All the teams compete simultaneously, and the list of events sounds rather interesting: punching balloons in a water polo goal, triathlon (swimming, running, pedalo driving), swimming with a water polo ball, swimming with the hands tied up, a sack race, and a tug of war in the sea. The games are great fun for everyone and contribute not only to developing the competitive spirit, but also to strengthening friendship among the competing towns. THE PADDLES OF JADRANOVO In this cheerful, energetic and exciting event in Jadranovo, several teams of local men, women and children row wooden boats from Tunera to the cove of Grabrova and back, urged on all the way by the beating of drums. Sometimes a paddle gets broken, but this race is all about the taking part and having fun, not winning. After the race there is a big fishermen s feast, with plenty of good food on offer.

26 EVENTS TUNA PARTY This event was created with the aim of evoking Jadranovo s past tradition of tuna fishing. It includes sampling various tuna specialities (salads, spreads, brodetto, grill, etc.) in an ambience decorated in fishermen s style accompanied by music a perfect guarantee for great fun and a most enjoyable atmosphere in the small coastal town of Jadranovo. PRIMORJE NIGHT This is an entertainment-gastronomic event that takes place in all the Riviera s towns and includes the presentation of ecological and natural products (homemade cheeses, olive oil, brandies, wine...), authentic souvenirs, traditional customs, folks dances and songs of the local area. ŠILO-CRIKVENICA SWIMMING MARATHON The Šilo-Crikvenica swimming marathon has been bringing these two towns together since In that time, it has grown into a unique sporting event attracting both recreational and professional swimmers. The international swimming competition, between Šilo on the island of Krk and Crikvenica on the coast, took place for the first time in 1910, when it was organised by the Health and Tourism Commission. Since then, the marathon has always taken place on the 14th or 15th of August on the feast of the Assumption of Mary, the patron saint of Crikvenica. A legend of this marathon is Ivan Blašković Ico, who took part in the race every year from 1978 until 1993, regardless of the weather conditions, and earned recognition for his butterfly swimming style. Today the marathon is organised by the members of the Crikvenica Swimming Club, employees of the Harbour Master s Office, the Marine Police and the Town of Crikvenica Administration, divers and medical services. A particularly important role is played by members of the local fishing clubs who sail behind the swimmers, making sure they are safe at all times during the marathon. FEASTS OF PATRON SAINTS Each village along the Crikvenica Riviera has always celebrated the feast of its own patron saint. Dramalj celebrates the feast of St. Helen on the 22nd of May; Jadranovo, St. James on the 25th of July; Crikvenica, the Assumption of Mary on the 15th of August; and Selce, St. Catherine on the 25th of November. Every year, Crikvenica holds a festival dedicated to its central public holiday (14th of August), known as Crikvenica Days. This includes numerous cultural, entertainment and sporting events, exhibitions, theatrical and folklore performances, literary evenings, concerts, sailing regattas and the traditional Šilo-Crikvenica swimming marathon, which is one of the oldest events of its kind in Croatia. The Feast of St. James, locally known as Jakovlja, the central summer event in Jadranovo, takes place in July before the feast of St. James, the patron saint of this town. DID YOU KNOW? The 14th August 2012 will be the 600th anniversary of the first written record of the name Crikvenica in an official document. The document was the deed of donation in which Prince Nikola IV Frankopan gave the castle and church next to the stream of Dubračina to the Pauline monks. In 2012, Crikvenica will host numerous interesting events dedicated to celebrating this important anniversary. Thanks to the efforts of Nikola Miko Šnjarić, from 1952 until the 1970s, Crikvenica regularly hosted international Speedway races. In 1956 it hosted the World Speedway Zone Championship for which it commissioned the first guidebook of the town to be published after World War Two. Carnival in Selce includes some very specific traditions, such as the threshing and burning of straw. Should the smoke blow towards the sea, it will be a good year for fishing, and if it blows inland, it will be a fertile year on land. Another tradition involves the making of a straw puppet known as the Pust: if it gets stolen before being presented to the public, there must be no carnival for the next seven years. info@tzg-crikvenice.hr

THE VINODOL LAW is one of the oldest legal documents in Europe. It was compiled by the representatives of nine towns and municipalities in the Vinodol area (Grobnik, Trsat, Bakar, Hreljin, Drivenik, Grižane, Bribir, Ledenice and Novigrad today Novi Vinodolski). These representatives met in the Frankopan castle of Novigrad on the 6th of January 1288 to draw up a list of the old legal traditions of the Principality of Vinodol. The aim of compiling this law was to protect serfs from their feudal lords, and especially from their juridical power. In 1996, the Croatian Institute for Human Rights was founded in the very same room in Novi Vinodolski in which the ancient law had been signed. The manuscript of the Vinodol Law is today kept in the National and University Library in Zagreb.

34 THINGS TO SEE THE CRIKVENICA AMPHORA Crikvenica is a town of impressive cultural heritage that dates right back to Roman times. This has been confirmed by recent archaeological exploration of the Ad Turres settlement, located on the site of today s Crikvenica. Among other findings, which all attest to life in this area around the 1st century AD, particularly worth mentioning is a unique type of Roman amphora, known as the Crikvenica Amphora after the location where it was discovered. Adriatic Flat-Bottomed Amphora of the Crikvenica Type is the official name of this special type of amphora, which was first discovered at the Ad Turres archaeological site, and whose type/uniqueness has been confirmed by the relevant experts. The Crikvenica Amphora is of a flat-bottomed Roman type and represents a local variant of the Forlimpopoli amphora type that was manufactured in Italy in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. Due to the many formal characteristics that distinguish this from the Forlimpopoli type, it has been concluded that the amphorae from Crikvenica were indeed an original product of Ad Turres. They were manufactured in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD in the large ceramic workshop that was discovered at the site of the present sports hall in Crikvenica. Today, two thousand years later, the production of these amphorae has been started anew. EELS IN DUBRAČINA The small river Dubračina in Crikvenica is home to a species of eel (Anguilla Linnaeus, 1758) that migrates 5,000 kilometres to spawn in the Sargasso Sea, where the females lay several million eggs and then die. The larvae, which hatch from the eggs, take three years to grow to a length of up to 7 centimetres and then make the exact same journey in reverse. Male eels stay at the mouth of the Dubračina, and the females swim upstream to the lake in Tribalj where they stay until sexual maturity and the migration to the Sargasso Sea. VRTARE MALE CAVE Vrtare male cave in Dramalj represents one of the richest palaeontological sites in Croatia. It attests to the life in prehistory and the Late Pleistocene, that is, the end of the long period of the Ice Age, in which present man emerged. The cave is ca. forty metres deep and contains a variety of fossil remnants of long extinct animals and a great biodiversity of cave organisms. Palaeontological research has confirmed the presence of bones and teeth of the elephant, wild rhino, aurochs/bison, horse, fallow deer, chamois, cave lion, cave bear, bear, and wolf. There are also numerous remnants of small mammals and birds: common vole, hamster, rabbit, bat, mole, wood pigeon, chough, goshawk, snowy owl, raven etc. The cave has been given preliminary protection by listening in the Croatian Register of Nature Monuments. Although palaeontological research in the cave has only begun, it has already yielded some extraordinary results. The Crikvenica Town Museum hosts the exhibition called The Lion s Cave, which is dedicated to the treasure trove of unique fossils that was discovered in the cave of Vrtare male. info@tzg-crikvenice.hr

THINGS TO SEE 35 KOTOR Before coming to populate the present Crikvenica area, local people used to live in Kotor on a nearby hill, which was first mentioned as early as the 13th century. The Kotor parish was part of the medieval town of Grižane, and seems to have had some very devout residents, going by the number of churches here, some of which were linked to monastic brotherhoods (St. Simon, St. Trinity, Most Holy Body, St. Mary, St. George and St. Nicholas). In 1776, a big fire devastated Kotor, causing most people to move to the coast.

36 THINGS TO SEE BADANJ FORT In the immediate vicinity of Crikvenica, alongside the stream of Dubračina, is the rather small yet strategically very well positioned fort of Badanj, the oldest remnant of medieval fortification architecture in the Vinodol region. The original name of this hilltop fort, which was abandoned after a big earthquake in the 14th century, remains unknown. Connected to the history of Badanj is the legend of a buried treasure trove that is protected by a large snake. The first Croatian settlers to this area heard about this legend from the indigenous people who lived here before they arrived. The snake is an Old Mediterranean divinity symbol, and legends of buried treasure are quite common in the areas of Crikvenica Riviera and Vinodol. info@tzg-crikvenice.hr
