3 Easter Sunday of the Resurrection April 21, 2019 When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory. Colossians 3:4 HAPPY EASTER! Happy Easter! Or as most other languages prefer: Blessed Pasch Passover! Pasqua, Pascua, Páscoa, Pâques! Israel s Passover through the Red Sea to the Promised Land! Jesus Passover through the Cross to resurrection! Our catechumens Passover last night, and ours once upon a time, through Baptism s waters to our family s Eucharist! Welcome, everybody! As someone once said of the Catholic Church, Here comes everybody! So in this Jubilee of Mercy, we make our own Saint John Chrysostom s Easter welcome from fourteen hundred years ago: Let everyone enjoy this radiant feast! You who fasted from Lent s beginning, and you who didn t fast at all, rejoice! The table s richly set! Come, take from it, everybody, no worries, no embarrassment! Paluch Co TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Over the centuries, the Church has demonstrated a wonderful ability to adopt a culture s favorite symbols and customs and assign them new meaning. Easter eggs have a very ancient pedigree: nature s perfect package, emblem of new life, dyed and decorated and given as gifts in ancient Egypt, Rome, China, and Persia. Just as the long hard winter is over, the egg bursts with promise of life and nourishment. Long ago, Christians came to see the egg not as a symbol of spring s rebirth, but of ours, and as a sign of Christ s tomb. A Polish legend says that Mary, in compassion for the soldiers at the cross, gave them eggs, but that her tears stained their shells with brilliant color. Legends have their origin in tales told around a hearth, but they often contain a profound truth. The idea of Mary, the first Christian, engaged in a merciful act of forgiveness and tenderness even in the shadow of the cross, describes the age old wish that Christ Easter in us. Caring Project for the Sisters In an effort to help the Sisters of the Destitute with projects around their convent, a caring group of diocesan parishioners have created a home projects plan which will include yard work, heat and air, carpet, appliances, paint and windows. As a way to thank the Sisters of the Destitute for all that they do for our community, you are invited to be a part of this project. 5 Bread for the Journey EASTER SEASON: A TIME OF NEW LIFE AND TRANSFORMATION Dear Brothers and Sisters, Happy Easter! You are reading this article after the Easter Vigil or after Easter Sunday Mass. We have completed our celebration of Lent and the Triduum and now begin our celebration of the Season of Easter. The Season of Easter begins on Easter Sunday morning and will continue for 50 days until the celebration of the Feast of Pentecost. In order to not lose sight of this Season, let us reflect on its meaning and implications. Let me first say that I enjoyed our celebration of the Triduum: from Holy Thursday to The Easter Vigil. I found each of the celebrations helped me experience the meaning of the paschal mystery. This often used phrase comes from the two Greek words pasha which means Passover and musterion which means secret reality. We normally think of the paschal mystery only in terms of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord. Actually the Paschal Mystery includes the Ascension and sending of the Spirit as well. Thus our celebration of the Paschal Mystery does not end on Easter Sunday morning but continues throughout the entire Easter Season which ends on the Feast of Pentecost. Pentecost celebrates the sending of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles and on Mary. God s salvation of Israel from Egypt anticipated God s salvation of humanity through the saving events in the life of Jesus. The Paschal Mystery refers to Christ passing over from death to life and in so doing drawing all humankind and history with him. The Easter Season began as the Jewish Feast of Passover. The Passover is the Feast in which the Jewish people celebrated and continue to celebrate the liberation of Israelite slaves from their captivity in Egypt. Jewish Christians celebrated the Feast of Passover along with the deliverance of Christians through Jesus passing over from death to new life. Very early this deliverance was celebrated not only through words but also through the deliverance from sin and death in the waters of baptism. At the Easter Vigil the Church continues to celebrate the reception of new life through the waters of baptism. During the Easter Season the first reading of each Sunday Mass is taken from the Acts of the Apostles. The meaning of these readings helps us to understand the Easter Season. The readings focus on the work of the Spirit in the lives of the apostles especially through their bold preaching about salvation in Christ Jesus and in the establishment of new communities. The readings from Acts portray a community that was filled with the Holy Spirit and who fully lived out their faith. Each reading challenges us to use this Easter Season as a time in which we live out and share our faith in a full way. As we approach the Feast of Pentecost let us be aware of the presence of the Holy Spirit within our lives, as was the early Christian community. During this Holy Season I ask that you keep in prayer those who will be fully initiated into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday Masses this year: Alice Cathryn Dosser and James Gregory Tanner who will be baptized and Jose Antonio Ortega, Maria de la Luz Ortega who will receive First Eucharist and Confirmation. Three children will be baptized at the Mass on Easter Sunday in English: Shunta a Jackson, Tay eiona Jackson and Wayne na Napoleon. Roberta Marie Herd will receive the initiation sacraments on the Sunday in the Octave of Easter (Divine Mercy Sunday). At this same Mass in Spanish Michel Sofia Olvera and Maria Fernanda Garcia Mendoza will be baptized. Please continue to pray for Evelyn Fabela who will soon be baptized in our parish. Please also pray for those who will receive their Confirmation and First Communion during this Easter Season. Please pray for the students who will be confirmed on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at Christ the King Catholic Church. Pray for students who will receive their first communions on Mother s Day, May 12, This Easter we also pray for Kevin Mues who will be ordained to the priesthood at the Cathedral on Saturday, May 18. Also pray for Magdalena and Salvador Cardenas who will be married on Saturday, May 18; Alison Grantham and Derrek Adams who will be married on Saturday, June 1, 2019; and Christian Lara and Lourdes Salais who will be married on Saturday, June 8, During this Easter Season we rejoice that Jesus Christ is our risen Savior. Fue a rezar como muchos hacemos ante la tumba de un ser amado. Esa mañana ella se convertiría en apóstol de los apóstoles, primera testigo de Jesús resucitado de entre los muertos. Siglos después el testimonio de la Magdalena sigue siendo importante en la historia cristiana. Durante estos días en Anguiano, España, hombres y jóvenes de las viejas familias de la zona bailan y caminan con una pequeña imagen de la Magdalena. Se visten con camisas y faldones largos de muchos colores, mostrando la belleza de la diversidad hispana. Ellos bailan en honor de esa santa mujer de Magdala y lo hacen sobre andas de casi un metro de altura. Ellos toman la imagen desde la iglesia de su pueblo en las montañas en el norte del país y la llevan bailando por las calles empedradas bajando al santuario que han preparado para ella. 9 TIEMPO DE LA PASCUA: UN TIEMPO DE NUEVA VIDA Y TRANSFORMACIÓN Queridos hermanos y hermanas: Pan para el Viaje Felices Pascuas! Estás leyendo este artículo después de la Vigilia pascual o después de la misa del Domingo de Pascua. Hemos completado nuestra celebración de la Cuaresma y el Triduo y ahora comenzamos nuestra celebración del Tiempo de Pascua. El Tiempo de Pascua comienza con el domingo de Pascua por la mañana y continuará durante 50 días hasta la celebración de la Fiesta de Pentecostés. Para no perder de vista este tiempo, reflexionemos sobre su significado e implicaciones. Primero, permítanme decir que tengo muchas ganas de celebrar el Santo Triduo con la comunidad. Tengo ganas de celebrar el misterio pascual de la muerte y resurrección del Señor con nuestra comunidad: desde el Jueves Santo hasta la Vigilia Pascual. Cada una de las celebraciones me ayuda a experimentar el amor que Jesucristo tiene para nosotros. La frase de uso frecuente proviene de las dos palabras griegas pasha, que significa "Pascua" y mysterion, que significa "realidad secreta". Normalmente pensamos en el misterio pascual solo en términos del sufrimiento, la muerte y la resurrección de nuestro Señor. En realidad, el misterio pascual incluye también la Ascensión y el envío del Espíritu. Por lo tanto, nuestra celebración del misterio pascual no termina el domingo de Pascua sino que continúa durante todo el tiempo de Pascua que termina en la fiesta de Pentecostés. Pentecostés celebra el envío del Espíritu Santo a los apóstoles y a María. La salvación de Dios de Israel de la esclavitud en Egipto anticipó la salvación de Dios de la humanidad a través de los eventos de salvación en la vida de Jesús. El misterio pascual se refiere a que Cristo pasó de la muerte a la vida y, al hacerlo, trajo consigo a toda la humanidad y toda la historia. El Tiempo de Pascua comenzó como la fiesta judía de la Pascua. La Pascua es la fiesta en la que el pueblo judío celebró y continúa celebrando la liberación de los esclavos israelitas de su cautiverio en Egipto. Los cristianos judíos celebraron la fiesta de la Pascua junto con la liberación de los cristianos a través del paso de Jesús de la muerte a la nueva vida. Muy temprano, esta liberación fue celebrada no solo a través de las palabras sino también a través de la liberación del pecado y la muerte en las aguas del bautismo. En la Vigilia Pascual, la Iglesia continúa celebrando la recepción de una nueva vida a través de las aguas del bautismo. Durante el Tiempo de Pascua, la primera lectura de cada misa dominical se toma de los Hechos de los Apóstoles. El significado de estas lecturas nos ayuda a entender el Tiempo de Pascua. Las lecturas se centran en la obra del Espíritu en la vida de los apóstoles, especialmente a través de su audaz predicación sobre la salvación en Cristo Jesús y en el establecimiento de nuevas comunidades. Las lecturas de Hechos retratan a una comunidad que fue llena del Espíritu Santo y que vivió plenamente su fe. Cada lectura nos desafía a usar este Tiempo de Pascua como un tiempo en el que vivimos y compartimos nuestra fe de una manera completa. Al acercarnos a la fiesta de Pentecostés, tomemos conciencia de la presencia del Espíritu Santo en nuestras vidas, como lo fue la comunidad cristiana primitiva. Durante este Tiempo santo, les pido que mantengan en oración a los que serán iniciados por completo en la Iglesia Católica en la Vigilia Pascual y en las Misas las dos primeros domingos de la Pascua este año: Alice Cathryn Dosser y James Gregory Tanner, quienes serán bautizados y José Antonio Ortega, María la Luz Ortega que recibirán la primera Eucaristía y la Confirmación. Tres niños serán bautizados en la misa el domingo de Pascua en inglés: Shunta a Jackson, Tay eiona Jackson y Wayne na Napoleon. Roberta Marie Herd recibirá los sacramentos de iniciación el domingo en la Octava de Pascua (Domingo de la Divina Misericordia). En esta misma misa en español se bautizarán Michel Sofía Olvera y María Fernanda García Mendoza. Por favor, continúe orando por Evelyn Fabela, que pronto será bautizada en nuestra parroquia. Por favor, ore también por aquellos que recibirán su Confirmación y Primera Comunión durante esta temporada de Pascua. Oremos por los estudiantes que serán confirmados el miércoles 1 de mayo de 2019 en la iglesia católica de Cristo Rey. Ore por los estudiantes que recibirán sus primeras comuniones en el Día de la Madre, 12 de mayo de Esta Pascua también oramos por Kevin Mues, quien será ordenado al sacerdocio en la catedral el sábado 18 de mayo.
