HE NEW ENGLAND OF CANADA, w h e n t h c tourist crosses the border from Vermont or New Hampshire into Canada he will notice that the new country he enters into has many of the characteristics of his own home land. There is much of a similarity in the style of buildings, in the manners and. customs of a goodly portion of the people, many of them speak his own tongue and their mode of living is in many respects similar to that of their own forefathers in the New England States. But he will not have travelled very far before he realizes that he is no longer in the United States, but in quite a different country. The topography is not the same, and an harmonious blend of two distinct nationalities immediately attracts his attention.

On Beautijul Lake Massawippi A LAND OF SCENIC BEAUTY. The Eastern Townships, as the country in that part of the Province of Quebec is called, never fail to delight the visitor by the beauty of their landscapes and the great variety <>l the scenery that greets his gaze. It is a land of plenty and of absorbing scenic beauty. The tourist passes from thriving industrial and commercial towns, into long stretches of highly cultivated farm land, and hence through districts where nature has gathered some of its most charming natural attractions. It is a continuous succession of prosperous communities and most delightful summer resorts.

i A Prosperous Village in the "Townships' PERFECT BONNE-ENTENTE. Side'by side, in every town, village or settlement, descendants of Imperial Loyalists who crossed, the border at the time of the War of Independence, live in constant harmony and good understanding with the representatives of another great race, the sons of the original settlers who came from "la Vieille France". Both groups have maintained their own language, their religion and distinctive customs and habits, and both remain faithful to their ancient traditions. But they live in an atmosphere of goodwill and of perfect peace, a striking example of what can be accomplished by a true "bonne-entente".

Making Sugar jrom the Maples APPINESS AND PROSPERITY. Descendants of French, English, Scotch and Irish, through their perfect cooperation and community of ideas, their thrift and their courage, have created and developed a most wonderful agglomeration of prosperous industrial centers and great farming districts. Agriculture, which lies at the basis of the economic life of Quebec, is undoubtedly the pioneer industry of the Eastern Townships, the farmers in that region deriving an annual income of over eighty-three millions of dollars from their lands and cattle. Maple syrup and sugar, one of the staple and national products of Quebec, is produced in large quantities in the "Townships".

A Lake, Source oj Grcut Power MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES. The storage of the water of many of the streams, that flow through that part of the Province of Quebec, has greatly contributed to the development of manufacturing industries which have made the "Eastern Townships" somewhat like a New England of Canada. The capital invested in those manufacturing industries is estimated at over one hundred million dollars and there are about twelve thousand hands employed in the many manufacturing plants throughout the Townships. The forests of that part of the Province produce pulp wood and building timber to a value of about fifteen million dollars a vear.

Entrancing Scenery along the Highway * REAT MINERAL WEALTH. Nature was extremely generous in endowing the Eastern Townships with its most abundant and richest gifts. It gave it huge productive fields and acres of magnificent grazing land, a wealth of water power and practically unlimited forest resources. But in addition it offered it a treasure chest of mining wealth. There are quarries in large numbers in the region, but the greatest of its mineral resources lies in the vast deposits of asbestos near the town of Thetford Mines. The mines are the largest of their kind in the world, nearly eighty-live per cent of all the asbestos used in all countries being extracted from those great mines.

Q UEEN OF THE TOWNSHIPS. Sherbrooke, miles from Montreal, and known as the "Queen of the Eastern Townships", is the main city in that entire region. It is located at the point which represents the shortest distance to the largest number of important cities and supply centers. It is the electric city of the east and its great abundance of power has caused, it to grow into one of the most important industrial localities in the Province It has a population of nearly 30,000 people, and no less than 60 different manufacturing plants producing a variety of goods. Sherbrooke is a modern city in every way and contains some very line buildings. The visitor of the "Queen of the Townships" will find first class accommodation in well managed hotels.

A Beautiful Stretch oj Roadway A NETWORK OF HIGHWAYS. No less than a dozen of improved highways criss cross the Eastern Townships, and they are all hard surfaced and kept in excellent condition That great network of roads lead to every point of interest in the region and radiate to all the leading cities and towns in the Province, and in addition provide several means of entrance and egress from and to the United States. The principal highways are: routes Nos. 1, 20, 34, 27, 22, 13, 39, 26, 40, 32, 5 and 28, and they are clearly outlined on the Road Map. In the very brief description of the more important localities no attempt has been made to classify them according to population or prominence from a commercial, industrial or scenicpoint of view.

Brome Lake, a Small Inland Sea ROSPEROUS COMMUNITIES. East Angus, which has a population of over 6,000, is a very prosperous industrial center; Victoriaville, with a population nearly as large, has a number of factories and is situated in a productive farming district. In the immediate vicinity there are many picturesque sites along the Nicolet river; Drummondville is known for its cotton and artificial silk factories and is a great business center; near the town is a large wireless station. The town of Arthabaska has several industries. It is located in a first class farming district. The town which is situated on "Monte-Cristo", has some interesting buildings, including the former home of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, former Premier of Canada, which has been converted into a museum.

An Old French-Canadiun Oven HERE INDUSTRY FLOURISHES. Granby, miles from Montreal, has a population of nearly (),")()() and is an important manufacturing town where products of many kinds are made. The place is very neatly laid out and the visitor should visit the Brownie Castle and the beautiful Church of St. Georges. Magog, about 83 miles from Montreal, founded by Loyalists, has some manufacturing and is also a well known summer resort; Farnham is a town of industrial and commercial activity on the picturesque banks of the Yamaska river; Cowansville is situated on Highway No. 2(>, in a most picturesque country. Most of those localities are near some of the most attractive beauty spots in the Townships, but they will be dealt with later.

An Ideal Spotjor a Day's Fishing ^OME PROGRESSIVE TOWNS. Waterloo is the county-town of Shefford. Mixed farming, cattle raising and dairying, and some manufacturing make it a prosperous town; Bromptonville is a manufacturing center of some importance; Coaticookand Compton, both on Highway No. 22, have several industrial plants and there is considerable splendid farming land in their immediate vicinity; Richmond is an important railway center and farming in general and dairying in particular occupy a large portion of the population. Danville is located in a rich farming district; Plessisville owes its prosperity to industry, farming and dairying, and there is some excellent fishing and shooting in the neighborhood.

Orjord Mountain and Lake Memphremagog AKES AND MOUNTAINS. As has already been stated very briefly, the Eastern Townships are replete with natural beauty spots ancf beautiful landscapes. Besides the vast expanses ol splendid emera I green meadows and. fields which provide such abundant pasture for the rich herds of cattle, there are some entrancing valleys, lofty mountains and hills, and lakes along the shores of which are some enchanting vacation resorts. Orford Mountain, near Magog, is 2,800 feet above sea level, and that town is built on the extremity of Lake Memphremagog 30 miles long. Among the other beautiful lakes are: Lake Magog, Lake Brome, and Lake Waterloo, while Mounts Shefford and Brome always appeal to the tourist.
