5 Force and Army, both of which are supported by this organization. MOTTO NICKNAME OPERATIONS Thus in mid-1966, the 1st Weather Group was activated at Tan Son Nhut under the 1st Weather Wing. Subordinate to it were three weather squadrons. From Udorn Air Base the 10th Weather Squadron supported Air Force units in Thailand. The 30th Weather Squadron remained at Tan Son Nhut and supported Seventh Air Force units in the Republic of Vietnam. Lastly, the 5th Weather Squadron, activated at Tan Son Nhut and moved to Long Binh Army Installation in July, rendered meteorological service to various elements of the United States Army, Vietnam, (USARV). That basic organizational structure remained intact until nearly the end of the conflict. At the group's peak manning, over 700 of AWS1 10,000 weathermen were assigned to various theater units, with 200 of them devoted to Army support. When the 30th Weather Squadron activated in November 1950, it took over Korean weather stations from the overextended 20th Weather Squadron. The squadron headquarters served at Seoul except for the period from December 1950 to July 1951 when enemy troops in or near the South Korean capital forced it to function at Taegu. The 30th managed many mobile detachments all over Korea to provide weather information to the Fifth Air Force, Eighth Army, and other UN forces. By the end of the war these detachments had served at 20 different locations around Korea, including some in the north when UN troops were there. In addition to the detachments, the squadron deployed a number of two-man teams with portable weather stations. Some of these teams served with UN ground units in forward areas, on islands off the Korean coast, or at airfields where full detachments were not required. In late 1951, the 30th Weather Squadron began training Korean observers and forecasters, whose work eventually allowed the squadron to reduce the number of its detachments. The squadron served the U.S. Eighth Army so well in Korea that the Department of the Army subsequently decided to rely on the Air Force for weather services. The 30th Weather Squadron was constituted on 29 August 1945, at Harmon Field, Guam. It was subsequently assigned to the 2nd Weather Group through the 43rd Weather Wing on 20 September The 30WS was reassigned in-place to the 1st Weather Group on 1 August 1946, where it remained until 1 June 1948, when the 1st Weather Group was renamed the 2100th Air Weather. On 25 October 1949, the 30WS was reassigned to the 2143rd Air Weather Wing, and moved to North Guam AFB, Guam. It remained at North Guam AFB until its first inactivation on 9 November Just over a year later, our squadron was brought back to life. On 16 November 1950, the 30WS was reactivated at Seoul, Korea, and reassigned to the 2143d Air Weather Wing. It was moved to Taegu, Korea on 22 December 1950, and back to Seoul on 3 July 1951, where it remained until
6 moving to Osan AB, Korea on 25 January Two weeks later, on 8 February 1954, the 30WS was assigned to the 1st Weather Wing. As the Air Force reorganized the structure of its weather forces, the 30WS was reassigned to the 10th Weather Group through the 1st Weather Wing on 18 February It then underwent yet another period of frequent movement, being reassigned to Moriyama AS, Nagoya, Japan on 9 May Just two months later, it was moved to Komaki AB, Honshu, Japan on 27 July Less than a year after that, on 10 March 1958, the 30WS was moved to Yamato AS, Japan, where it remained until its second deactivation on 8 August The Vietnam conflict called for the 30WS to rise from the ashes yet a third time. On 5 October 1962, the 30WS was reactivated at Tan Son Nhut AB, Vietnam. Shortly thereafter, it was organized under the 1st Weather Wing on 8 November 1962, and assigned in place to the 1st Weather Group on 8 July The 30WS remained at Tan Son Nhut AB until its third deactivation on 1 July September 1976 saw the fourth reincarnation of the 30WS. On this date, the 30WS was reactivated at Yongsan AIN, Korea and assinged to the 1st Weather Wing, where it remained until the fourth inactivation on 1 June This dormant period would be extremely short lived, however. On 1 July 1992, after only 30 days of deactivation, the 30WS was resurrected a fifth and final time, right here at Vandenberg AFB, CA, assigned to the 30th Operations Group, Air Force Space Command. Defend the United States through launch and range weather operations.
