4 Welcome to Rwanda Overview Rwanda is a landlocked country in Central East Africa. With an estimated population of nearly 12 million, Rwanda is one of the most densely populated countries in Africa, there is only one time zone in Rwanda (GMT+2), which does not change throughout the year. Since the devastating 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi, Rwanda has emerged as an impressive story of transformation in Africa. Guided by the long-term Vision 2020, and by comprehensive policy reforms over the last two decades, the country has achieved remarkable socio-economic progress per capita GDP from $206 in 2002 to $ 729 in Real GDP growth averaged 7.3% for , much higher than the averages for Sub- Saharan Africa. The Government is focused on rebuilding the country and improving the quality of life. Good governance, productive and market oriented agriculture, and regional and international economic integration are three of the six pillars of the Rwanda s long-term Vision The average temperature during the day varies between C and goes down during the night to C. Rwanda enjoys a subequatorial climate all year moderated by the altitude (1,500 to 2,500m above sea level). Rwanda has two rainy seasons. The first heavy and persistent rainy season lasts from mid-march to May, then from June to mid-september is the long dry season. The second rainy season starts in October to December. However, during Rwanda s dry seasons, there is often light cloud cover. This helps to moderate the temperatures, but also occasionally brings light rain showers. 4

5 Welcome to Rwanda Religion More than half of the population is Roman Catholic (56.5%). Others are Protestant (26%), Adventist (11.2%) and Muslim (4.6%). The rest of the population follows other indigenous beliefs. You can ask any Rwandan about his/ her religion, but never ask about ethnicity. Languages Kinyarwanda, English, French and Kiswahili are widely spoken in the country. However, the national language is Kinyarwanda, while English and French are official languages. Currency & Banking The Rwandan currency is the Rwandan Franc (RWF). Many hotels, some restaurants, and main supermarkets accept Visa cards. Cash can be withdrawn with local debit cards as well as with international credit cards from ATMs scattered around the city. Access Bank, Bank of Kigali and I&M Bank have special counters for international credit cards. However, commissions are relatively high. FOREX Bureaus in town offer better exchange rates than banks. 5

7 General information Getting An Entry Visa Nationals of all countries traveling to or transiting through Rwanda obtain a 30 days entry visa upon arrival without necessarily making prior application and pay for a visa ($30) where applicable. For more information, please contact the Rwandan Immigration Authorities website: gov.rw/ or by contacting an official Rwandan delegation in your country of recruitment. Office Working Hours Government offices and businesses are generally open between 7:30am-5:30pm with a short lunch break between 12:00pm-1:00pm. Most shops and banks do not break for lunch. Some banks close early at 6.00pm, others close at 7:00pm. Some banks open on Saturdays and Sundays as well. Depending on the neighbourhood, some shops stay open 24/7 including The Nakumatt supermarkets. Practical Information Electricity: In Kigali, there are mostly 220/240-volt electrical circuits. Plugs are mainly 2-pin, however some hotels have the UK 3-pin plug. 3-pin adaptors are available in the markets and shops. Internet: There are currently various internet service providers in the country namely MTN Rwanda, Airtel Rwanda, Tigo Rwanda, ISPA, 4G Square, ktrn and liquid telecom among others. The providers offer different deals and packages and it is recommended to compare the latest offers before choosing. Some offer simple modems with a sim card that create a wireless network. You can also access internet using your mobile phone if connected with any of the internet service providers. It is best to buy an internet bundle or internet pack instead of using airtime directly which is more expensive. All hotels and most public spaces provide Wifi connections. 8 YouthConnekt Africa Summit 2018 Transport Facilities: The summit will provide transport for all delegates from the airport to hotels and from hotels to summit venues. VIPs will be given private cars with liaison officers. For VIPs without assigned cars, some VIP cars will be available on standby. Assistants will be available at the airport, venue and some hotels to help coordinate transit. 10 Cultural Activities Kigali has several cultural activities to attend: Art : There are several art galleries in Kigali, including Inema Arts (www. facebook.com/inemaarts) and Ivuka Arts ( They often host monthly exhibitions and other activities in their spaces, in addition to selling artwork. Theatre: The Goethe institute in Kiyovu is the German cultural centre. They usually air free movies on Tuesdays and hold regular cultural events. Cinema The movie theatre Century Cinema is located in Kigali City Tower and can be rented out for private events. Nightlife: Friday and Saturday nights are often eventful in Kigali. The Kimihurura area is particularly buzzing. During the week, there are several live music options at Heaven, Marriott Hotel or Mille Collines on Thursday and Friday. Museums: The Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre is usually the first stop for visitors to Rwanda. The old Presidential Palace Museum also has an informative museum and tour, as does the Belgian Memorial. Many museums and memorials are found just a short drive outside of Kigali. For more information, please visit: museum.gov.rw Dining/ Going out Kigali There is a variety of cuisines and restaurants, with new places opening all the time (see or The Eye for new information) and smaller and local restaurants can also be an option to explore. Most restaurants are located in Kiyovu, Kimihurura or in Nyarutarama. Cafes also tend to be located in these areas, Bourbon being the biggest chain. Kigali has many bars in all neighbourhoods, which get going in the afterwork hours. Reading in Rwanda The biggest bookshop in Kigali is the Librairie Ikirezi Bookshop in Kacyiru with a wide selection of books in both English and French ( biz/ikirezi.html). Librairie Caritas is located in the city centre (Avenue du Commerce), and offers a variety of books mostly in French. The Kigali Public Library is located next to the American embassy in Kacyiru, with a wide, if unorganized book selection. 11 Health Medical Facilities: The Dental Clinic in Kiyovu can be contacted at This is the most widely recommended clinic. The Adventist Dental Clinic (tel: ) and The Clinique Dentaire A.D.A in Nyarutarama (tels: or ) are also highly recommended. The KING FAISAL Hospital is the hospital of reference (see contact details on page 3). The BAHO international hospital has recently opened in Kigali and has international medical staff in gynaecology, surgery and internal medicine. The UN Clinic is available to all UN staff and dependents for any check-up, immunization, medical clearance, and implementing health and safety policies. Most well-known drugs are available in local pharmacies and can be purchased without a doctor s prescription. Proof of Yellow Fever vaccination is required upon entering the country. Make sure you bring your updated vaccination card. Hepatitis A & B and Typhoid vaccinations are recommended to all travellers. Additional immunisations may also be needed and staff should always seek current advice on vaccinations from the UN Clinic. Malaria : Cases of Malaria have been reported in Kigali as well as in other parts of the country (especially in the eastern and southwestern parts). Using mosquito nets is highly advisable. These can be easily bought locally (markets, pharmacies and supermarkets). When searching for a house, make sure that the windows have mosquito nets as well. Depending on the length of your stay, you should also consider taking anti-malarial medication, such as Malarone, upon the advice of your physician. Do note that chloroquine is not an effective antimalarial here. Mosquitoes tend to be most active from dusk to dawn. If you are prone to bites, insect repellent is available in most stores here. Water and food-borne diseases: Currently there are no reports of any epidemic on Rwandan soil. However, tap water must be boiled before drinking. In fact, it is strongly recommended to purchase bottled water for drinking. Some feel more comfortable brushing their teeth with bottled water as well. Swimming in the lakes (like Lake Muhazi for example) places you at risk for the bilharzia parasite (schistosomiasis). However, many expats do swim in Lake Kivu (Gisenyi and Kibuye). Bilharzia treatment is available in local pharmacies. HIV/AIDS: Based on UNAIDS statistics, the HIV prevalence in Rwanda is 3%. There are no restrictions for people living with HIV, nor is a medical certificate or an HIV test required on entry. There are no regulations regarding the control, deportation or expulsion of those concerned. Antiretrovirals (Combivir, Epicir, Crixivan and Sustiva) are available in Rwanda (further information Treatment is also available at the UN Dispensary. Condoms are easily available in Rwanda. PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) Starter Kits are available. 11

12 Sport Those keen on sports will find enough to do, especially with the all-year-round good weather. Squash and Tennis The only squash court in Kigali is at the Cercle Sportif. Tennis is a well-practiced sport in Kigali by locals and expats. Tennis courts and trainers are available at Cercle Sportif, the Nyarutarama Tennis Club, and hotels like the Mille Collines and Umubano. Prices for classes in the hotels tend to me more expensive than in the clubs. Football The occasional games played at the national stadium attract huge crowds. In Cercle Sportif there is a fullsize grass field for rent for occasional matches. Golf An 18-hole course is located in Nyarutarama. Further information is available at www. rwanda-direct.com/rwanda-golf/vv/. Private classes can be organized at the course. Gym Most hotels have gym facilities (offering aerobic classes and others). The Amahoro Stadium has a gym as well as other sport facilities. 12

13 Sport Swimming There are swimming pools at most of the big hotels, notably the Serena, Radisson, Mariott Hotel, The Manor, Umubano and Mille Collines. Some offer memberships packages for the use of swimming and other sport facilities or classes for children, others only allow payment for day entrance. There are also swimming pools at the sports clubs (Cercle Sportif and Nyarutarama Tennis Club) that require membership. Yoga Weekly yoga classes are held at Mamba Club at Kimihurura ( or Classes are also available at City Arts Kigali ( com) and Inema Arts ( The classes at Mamba and Inema are run by Yego Yoga ( Bowling Mamba Club has a bowling alley with several lanes. Groups usually go on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Spa Sunset Spa in Kibagabaga offers massages, facials, manicures, pedicures, hair removal, and body scrub (Call ). Soul & Spa in Nyarutarama (behind Manor Hotel) offers similar services. Some hotels like the Serena and the Manor hotel also offer spa treatments, but at a much steeper rate. 13

15 APPENDIX: Kigali Map and Transport This map and other helpful resources can be found at the official website for the city of Kigali ( Gasabo District Boundaries Kicukiro District Boundary Nyarugenge District Bound- Sectors There is a detailed map on the site living in Kigali ( ). Road and Traffic Conditions: Road conditions within Kigali are very good on the main roads and some streets. Driving conditions, whilst not difficult, can be frustrating during rush hours when there are lots of cars, buses and motorbikes. Special attention should be paid to motorcycles as they contribute to many accidents in the country. For journeys outside Kigali, it is recommended to use a 4-wheel drive vehicle if you plan to drive off the main roads. Most of the roads outside Kigali have no streetlights, therefore it is recommended to travel only during daylight for security reasons. Public Transport and Taxis: There are bus services covering most of the city. Private companies providing public transport services are Kigali Bus Services (KBS) ( html), Rwanda Federation of Transport Cooperative (RFTC) and Royal Express. Prices start at 200 RWF to be paid by a smart card ( and are fixed for each route. Use of local buses is a safer alternative to the taxi moto (motorbike taxi). Motorbikes are cheap but can involve high speeds and careless driving. Price starts from 300 RWF per trip, and prices should be negotiated before you accept a ride. The driver provides an extra helmet that must be worn. For motorbikes, payment is made when you arrive at your destination and it is advisable to know your final destination. Many moto drivers speak Kinyarwanda only, but they are always ready to hear the name of the place and take you. Special hire taxis are available and are usually white cars with an orange strip, but some look like just regular cars. The authorised ones are metered (500 RWF per kilometre). For other taxis, you agree on the fare before starting a journey. It is recommendable to take those with reading meters. Taxi rides within the city centre start at 1500 RWF. Many drivers speak English or French, however directions are difficult, since there are not many observable addresses. Fees for taxis to/from the airport a fixed rate of 15,000 RWF (US$19-20). 15
