4 The Detroit Princess Built in Jennings, Louisiana, in 1993 for use as a gambling boat, the Detroit Princess riverboat was purchased by CJC Cruises in May 2004, and shortly after embarked on its long journey from Orange, Texas, to the Detroit River. Because the 222 foot-long, 88 foot-tall riverboat is too large to navigate the northern Mississippi River, it traveled through the Gulf of Mexico, around Florida via the inter-costal waterway, and up the eastern seaboard of the United States to Nova Scotia, where it entered the St. Lawrence Seaway, which connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes. The boat finally arrived in Toledo, Ohio, in October of 2004, where the interior was renovated to accommodate a full-service restaurant. The maiden voyage of the newly-dubbed Detroit Princess took place on June 18th, The Detroit Princess cruises the Detroit River year-round and can accommodate up to 1500 passengers at a time. The Detroit Princess The Detroit Riverfront The Detroit Princess is an integral part of the Detroit s East Riverfront, which also includes the GM Plaza and Promenade, Hart Plaza, the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority, Chene Park Amphitheater, Rivard Plaza, and Milliken State Park and Harbor, all of which are connected by the Detroit Riverwalk. The Riverfront is in a state of constant development, and it stands as a symbol of the ongoing revitalization of the city. Since 2003, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy has been working to shape the Riverfront, and it is the ultimate goal of the DRC to eventually develop all five and a half miles of Riverfront, from the Ambassador Bridge to the Belle Isle MacArthur Bridge. 3
5 Detroit Works Detroit Works in an initiative that was created by Detroit Mayor Dave Bing in 2010 to construct a blueprint that redefines the physical, social, and economic landscape of our city. The project involves two separate tracks, Short Term Actions and Long Term Planning. Short Term Actions Using a Neighborhood Analysis, a study to review the condition of the city s housing stock, vacant land and homes, median sales prices of homes and other factors, city leaders concluded that Detroit neighborhoods fall into three different market-types: Steady, Transitional and Distressed. With this information in hand, the city government is ready to guide decisions about how to best to leverage resources and make adjustments to how some city services are delivered today. Long Term Planning A steering committee oversees the technical and civic engagement teams that have been charged with developing meaningful and inclusive engagement strategies to gather the expertise of the community. Once this is complete, a strategic framework plan for the future of Detroit can be developed. The farm, which is owned, operated, and staffed exclusively by those who live, work, and play in the city, breathes new life into downtown Detroit by morphing urban decay into sustainable agriculture. Apart from the aesthetic transformation and marketable produce, Hantz Farms hopes to stimulate the Detroit s economy by creating new jobs for local residents, synergy for local businesses, and all-around better environment in a once desolate urban location. 6 Fountain Bistro Fountain Bistro, located in Campus Martius Park in the heart of Downtown Detroit, first opened in the summer of 2010 as café, primarily catering to the breakfast and lunch crowds. Since that time, Fountain Bistro has evolved into a first class dining experience, featuring a newly-renovated interior, full bar, and expanded menu. Fountain Bistro is owned by John Lambrecht, Jr., who also owns Detroit hotspot Bookies Bar and Grill, and Matthew and Kevin Morin, owners of the Detroit technology consulting firm Macro Connect. Speaker: John Lambrecht Fountain Bistro Campus Martius Park The original Campus Martius Park spanned several acres and was considered to be the central gathering point of the city. During the early 1900 s, the park began to shrink gradually as the bustling city streets were reconfigured to accommodate the increasing traffic associated with the introduction of the automobile. Eventually, Campus Martius disappeared beneath the urban growth experienced by the city during that period. It wasn t until the 1990 s that a public outcry for the re-establishment of Campus Martius Park was heard. In 1999, the community action group Detroit 300 added Campus Martius into its Legacy Project, and together with Dennis Archer, the Detroit Mayor at that time, formed the Campus Martius Park Task Force charged with planning and designing the park. Indianapolis-based architectural firm Rundell Ernstberger Associates were commissioned to design the park, and construction began in the spring of The new Campus Martius Park was dedicated on November 19, Speaker: Bob Gregory Campus Martius Park 5
7 Bedrock Real Estate Services Created by Quicken Loans founder Dan Gilbert and seasoned Detroit real estate professional Jim Ketai, Bedrock s one and only mission is to revitalize Detroit, Cleveland, and other promising urban centers. Bedrock Real Estate Services currently owns and manages 11 properties in downtown Detroit, including the Dime Building, the Chase Tower, most of the 1500 block of Woodward Avenue adjacent to Grand Circus Park, the Madison Theater, and the newly acquired former Federal Reserve Building. Bedrock is currently the second largest private owner of office space in Detroit, behind Renaissance Center owner General Motors. Speaker: Jim Ketai Bedrock Real Estate Services Slows BBQ Slows BBQ Located on Michigan Avenue in the trendy Corktown neighborhood of Detroit, Slows BBQ has gained local and national acclaim since it opened in This comes as no surprise to those who have indulged in the delicious, slow-cooked barbeque ribs, pulled pork, or Slows famous Mac-N-Cheese. Even more impressive than the menu is the story of Slows origin and the impact it has had on the Corktown neighborhood, home to iconic Detroit landmarks like the old Michigan Central Train Depot and the old Tiger Stadium, which has since been demolished. Owner Phil Cooley took a considerable risk by opening a restaurant in an area of the city that many businesses were scrambling to leave. Slows BBQ has seen phenomenal success throughout the last few years, and has ushered in a new era for Corktown, with Phil Cooley becoming the poster child for Detroit s revitalization. With the original restaurant s success, a second location has since opened, designed by architect Noah Resnick. He is the Director of the Master of Architecture Program at the University of Detroit Mercy, and a founding principal of urbandetail, an intimate research based architecture and urban design studio that operates under the interrelated concepts of the architectonics of multiple scales; the architect as urban collaborator; and the architect as community builder. 8 Eastern Market Eastern Market The original Farmer s Market in Detroit opened in 1841 in the city s downtown area. Satellite markets eventually opened on the eastside in the 1850 s, and in 1891 the Farmer s Market officially relocated from downtown to the eastside location and was renamed Eastern Market. Currently, Eastern Market occupies 43 acres, making it the largest historic public market district in the United States. On most Saturdays, the market may see as many as 40,000 visitors browsing the vendor s selection of locally grown and harvested fruit, vegetables, flowers, meat and poultry, and dairy products, as well as antiques, crafts, wines, and many other hidden treasures. 9 Westin Book Cadillac In 1917, brothers J. Burgess, Frank, and Herbert Book commissioned Detroit architect Louis Kamper to design a new building for the recently acquired Cadillac Hotel. After years of delays, mainly due to the materials shortage caused by World War I, building commenced in 1923 and the hotel opened in 1924 as the Book Cadillac. After the Book Brother s lost ownership during the Great Depression, hotel industry pioneer Ralph Hitz s National Hotel Management Company took control. The Book Cadillac was purchased by Sheraton Hotels in 1951, renamed the SheratonCadillac, and underwent considerable renovations. The hotel s ownership and name changed again in 1976 when Radisson Hotels purchased the property. Westin Book Cadillac It operated as the Radisson-Cadillac until 1979 when it was once again sold and then faced possible closure due to declining business. During this time, the city of Detroit, via the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, entered into a partnership with the owners to keep the Book-Cadillac open. In 1983, the hotel was slated to be converted into a mixed-use property and closed its doors in 1983 for renovations. The renovations never happen, and after the last retail tenants moved out in 1986, the building remained vacant for 20 years. Finally, after years of legal battles, the Cleveland-based Ferchill Group announced that the building would become a part of the Starwood Hotels family, and would be operated as a Westin Hotel. After two years of construction and renovations, the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel opened in October
