The city is steeped in history, yet today is a growing cosmopolitan area. Travel along US Hwy. through the almost vertical canyon walls of Logan Canyon to Bear Lake. The canyon slices through the peaks of the Wasatch Mountains following the Logan River. Activities include rock climbing, fishing, bird watching, camping, hiking, boating and more at Bear Lake. Or travel west to visit the Golden Spike National Historic Site, the location of the meeting of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroads on May 10, 1869 which completed the transcontinental rail link. 5 Salt Lake Metro/ Wasatch Back The Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City Great Salt Lake: Located west of Salt Lake City, the remnant of the ancient Lake Bonneville is impressive, whether you stand on the shore or take to the water via kayak or dinner cruise. The lake varies in depth some 20 feet and is six or seven times saltier than the ocean. Visit Antelope Island to view its resident buffalo herd. Or hike, bike or camp along the sandy shoreline. Metro Salt Lake City: This beautiful capitol city lies in a valley east of the Great Salt Lake and is surrounded by mountains. Tour the capitol building or explore Temple Square, home of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly known as the LDS or Mormon Church). Within the Square, visitors find the massive Mormon Temple and other buildings that celebrate the history of the Mormon settlers. The city is also home to the University of Utah, numerous museums, and businesses with local, as well as global influence. Salt Lake City and the surrounding small cities also have wonderful shopping areas. Visit competition venues used during the 2002 Winter Olympics or take in an NBA game with the Utah Jazz, a baseball game with the Salt Lake Bees, a hockey match with the Utah Grizzlies or enjoy a soccer match with Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer. With an international airport, and a location at the intersection of I-80 and I-15, Salt Lake City is used by many as a base from which to experience the many activities available throughout the west. Choose from eleven ski resorts, numerous golf courses, and hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails. The city is central to Jackson Hole and the Grand Tetons in Wyoming, Sun Valley in Idaho, Yellowstone National Park in Montana, Utah s National Parks in the state s southeast and southwest, the Grand Canyon, and numerous Native American sites of the Four Corners.
