TONTOUTA: ON TRACK FOR A WORLD-CLASS AIRPORT The Water Festival begins on Monday 2 May and will run for a week. Kids and adults alike will be enchanted by the festive exhibitions and attractions (particularly the big live music event scheduled for Tuesday evening at the Socio-Cultural Centre). The Festival will end in style on Saturday 7 May with an extravaganza of kayaking trails, a game fishing competition and introductory paraglider flights... La Foa s central square will be the venue for a lively bumper market overflowing with fresh local produce and the day will also feature an exhilarating morning s entertainment with well-known samba band La Banda Momo, who will also take part in the sports and water-themed parade. This will be followed by the launching of an outrigger river canoe built on the spot, shows featuring giant puppets, a concert starring Les Poules Sultanes and traditional dances performed by La Foamako and Mauga Uta. The third Passion Wednesday (4 May) is about to hit Anse Vata beachside, with the spotlight this time on Pilou & Bougna. The program includes two hours of attractions inspired by the traditional Kanak Pilou dance and the opportunity to treat your tastebuds to the legendary and delicious Bougna, undisputed star of Kanak cuisine (a Melanesian speciality stew steamed for hours to draw out the flavours). You can be sure of a really cheerful and relaxed atmosphere under the Anse Vata lagoon side farés. The new complex already looks pretty impressive. For a few years now, New Caledonia s need for a larger, more functional and generally more prestigious airport has become increasingly pressing. The work begun three years ago has recently reached a key stage, with final delivery of the spacious and sparkling new arrivals hall, designed to optimise passenger comfort. So much space! Travellers using the airport will henceforth be able to enjoy all the facilities of a vast and airy 3,200 m 2 hall. A first bank of 13 check-in desks for outgoing passengers is now in service, making check-in procedures faster and more convenient. And facilities include a central island housing the information desk, the Aircalin and Air Austral ticket sales desks, the postal agency, the shop selling flowery welcome garlands and more... The area at the heart of the island is a sumptuous indoor garden planted with sweet-scented local plants and flowers and equipped with rest areas for passengers with reduced mobility. Work goes on But the extensive renovation and modernisation work is not yet complete. In fact, the changes scheduled for unveiling during 2011 will be quite frankly spectacular! This year should see the commissioning of a plateglass walkway running right across the new arrivals hall. Thanks to the walkway, welcome parties waiting in the hall will be able to wave to incoming passengers long before they are processed through landing procedures. A number of wetlands discovery days have been organised as part of International Year of Forests initiatives. The chosen destination for Sunday 8 May is the fascinating Rivière Blanche wetlands area. 4 HOT PICKS AND LIFE STYLE Art & Culture History 29 APRIL - 12 MAY PAGE 4 GREEN GOLD RECREATING THE PAST The Villa Museum at Païta, located 20 minutes drive from Noumea, paints an intriguing picture of the town s past history. The little museum, run by enthusiastic volunteers, is a real treasure house. Old documents, photographs, artefacts and furniture provide fascinating insight into what brought European settlers to the area in the late 19 th century and how they lived their lives. Much of the exhibition is dedicated to the life and times of James Paddon, who came to New Caledonia from England in Paddon began by bartering with local Kanak tribes and gradually built up a flourishing business, extending his trading activities to all the South Sea islands and also breeding cattle, horses, sheep and pigs. The museum s collection not only traces part of Paddon s life story and progress as a local worthy but also includes a kitchen and bedroom faithfully reconstructed from period furniture and everyday items, giving visitors a wonderfully clear idea of how people lived over 150 years ago. The beginnings of local nickel mining go back a long way and nickel remains a key pillar of New Caledonia s economy. In 1864, French engineer Jules Garnier not only discovered nickel in New Caledonia but also how to extract it from mineral ore. He had been sent to Noumea to take up a post as head of the Feel Good Mines Inspectorate. He fell in love with the country and decided to explore the Main Island. During his travels, he discovered a strange new pale green mineral which was later named garnierite in his honour. This magical mineral, known as green gold soon attracted crowds of speculators and a fully fledged nickel rush began. In 1876, Jules Garnier filed a patent to undertake nickel mining on an industrial scale and was one of the founders of a company which later became the powerful Société Le Nickel (SLN smelting plant in Noumea). Nickel continues to play a key role in local economy: New Caledonia possesses around 25% of the world s known resources. A second company (Brazilian giant Vale) is poised to start production at its process plant in the South near Prony Bay, while a third process plant is under construction in the North of the Main Island. READY, SET, GO! Sunday 8 May is the date scheduled for one of New Caledonia s premier annual sporting events: the International Triathlon. This year s race will be the 26 th International Triathlon and every year top triathletes from all over the Pacific Region, including Australia and New Zealand, flock here to battle it out for victory. The Noumea triathlon is unusual in that competitors can enter the race as individuals or in teams of 3 to 7, with classic sprint distances applying for each discipline: a 700m swim, a 40km bike ride and a 21km run. Early in the morning, crowds of spectators gather at Anse Vata Bay to watch Move it the start of the race. This is the major competition of the year for our home-grown athletes and one they are determined to shine in. Over the years, the Noumea International Triathlon - Banque de Nouvelle-Calédonie has gained a reputation as a well-organised event popular for its friendly atmosphere. The Nature Spot On the day before the race, all the athletes, from New Caledonia and elsewhere, are invited to attend a pasta party, a cheerful and relaxed shared lunch. Then they all jump on their bikes and set off together for a pre-race reconnaissance. By Fabrice Chassaing, Chef at Le Roof restaurant THE CUSTOMARY WELCOME The traditional welcome or coutume is a cornerstone of Kanak culture. In its broadest sense the term coutume refers to all the social rules that govern everyday life but in the above instance it refers to the traditional welcome ceremony, which is a mark of respect (at the beginning of a meeting, on arrival on tribal land, etc). A simple gift is offered. Originally this took the form of Kanak money, which was made from shells, flying fox fur, etc. Today a gift of tobacco and money (around F 1,000) is laid upon a piece of material (known as le manou ). The person who is giving the gift explains his/her reasons (to give thanks, make a request for authorisation to enter tribal lands, etc). The person, who receives the gift, replies and touches the gift as a sign of acceptance. CUSTOMARY AREAS New Caledonia has eight customary areas (Ajië - Aro, Djubéa- Kaponé, Hoot Ma Waap, Paci-Camuki, Xaracuu, Nengone. A TIME- HONOURED TRADITION Kava (Piper methysticum) is a large shrub with broad, heart-shaped leaves, native to many islands of the South Pacific. Kava roots are pulped to make a drink also known as kava, traditionally measured and drunk from a coconut half-shell. Due to its rather earthy taste, drinkers swallow it at one gulp then rinse their mouths to take away the taste. People come to drink kava at a Nakamal after sundown, to socialise and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere. Kava, which is non-addictive, has a very calming effect and Nakamals are places of quiet discussion and contemplation, dimly lit and peaceful. You can recognize a Nakamal by the discreet red or orange lamp at the entrance. The authentic kava experience is a great way to wind down at the end of day The trail climbing to the top of Pic Malaoui (nicknamed the Gendarme s Hat ) is a favourite with keen New Caledonian hikers. The summit commands stunning panoramic views over Noumea. Meet up with your fellow hikers at the Auberge du Mont Koghi, a cool oasis perched high above Noumea on the borders of a lush rainforest, barely 20 minutes drive from the city. You can t miss the signs marking the start of the trail. It will take you about 2 hours to reach the summit of the Gendarme s Hat ; the route winds through the lush forest vegetation which gradually gives way Experience to wild niaouli savannah as you climb higher. You ll need to be in good shape as the trail is a fairly challenging one but you ll be amply rewarded by the awe-inspiring beauty of the view at the summit, an endless vista over the Dumbea valley and Noumea, cradled in its setting of lagoon and mountains. Don t forget to wear sturdy walking shoes and to take plenty of water. And on your return to the Auberge du Mont Koghi, you can look forward to a cool refreshing drink and a tasty bite to recoup your energy. Tourism Office, Tel (toll-free phone) THE ESSENTIAL OUTRIGGER CANOE Bwakalaa m move (movement of the outrigger canoe) is the main Tjibaou Cultural Centre collective exhibition for the first half of The exhibition is a cultural and spiritual quest. Ingredients (serves 4): Zest from 2 oranges, 2.5 g powdered cinnamon, ½ litre milk, 5 egg yolks, 125 g sugar, 50 g flour, 200 g black chocolate, 4 sheets of brick pastry. Mint oil: 300 g olive oil, 150 g fresh mint (to infuse), 100 g honey, juice of 1 lemon. Preparation: Confectioner s custard Infuse orange zest and cinnamon in the pre-heated milk. Whiten egg yolks with sugar and flour, pour hot milk onto mixture and re-heat for one minute. Pour final mixture over chocolate and add orange and cinnamon. To make the spring rolls: Leave the filling mixture to cool then pour into an icing bag with a 2cm nozzle and squeeze out into 6cm long sausages. Wrap each sausage in a strip of brick pastry. Mint oil: Heat oil to 70/80 C then pour over fresh mint and mix in a blender. Stir in honey and lemon juice and reserve. Presentation: Fry spring rolls at 180 C. Arrange 5 rolls on a plate with a bouquet of lettuce. Drizzle with mint oil. Serve and enjoy! Le Roof, 134 promenade Roger Laroque, Anse Vata It reflects the journey accomplished by young Kanak artists as they seek the true meaning of the outrigger canoe. Jean-Philippe Tjibaou has made this quest the focus for his work as artist-in-residence at the Centre, involving young Kanak artists working in various media in his project. The result is a harmonious and surprising mix of sculptures, paintings, videos and photographs. This exhibition also has a story. In 2003, the young people of Hienghène were given the task of resuscitating the ancient art of outrigger canoe construction. In some parts of the East Coast no canoe had been built for at least 50 years. Artistic creativity reached its full fruition in September 2010 at the 4 th Melanesian Arts Festival, where the lovingly carved canoe was first put on display. Wander round the stalls spread out on both levels of the building and choose your own special souvenirs of New Caledonia. Postcards, sarongs, local costumes, T-shirts, fashion jewellery, traditional sculptures... Your only problem will be making up your mind! So set off on a tour of the displays and meet the friendly stallholders who are all delighted to show off their wares and chat to visitors. Just so you know: all items sold at the Maritime Terminal have been approved by the Plant Health Authorities for import into Australia. I came over for the Annual General Meeting of the PITA (Pacific Islands Telecommunication Association). However, I did manage to set aside some time to visit the country. I went on a helicopter flight over the lagoon and the coast which gave me a much better idea of what New Caledonia is all about. It is an outstandingly beautiful country with a wealth of natural scenery; I had no idea it was so green. I think that local tourism could be further developed because there are so many magnificent places to visit and there is huge potential. I have already visited Martinique, Guadeloupe and Reunion Island but here I found a cultural tradition that is completely different and with much closer ties to the people.
