Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy Located 43 mi/69 km west of Rome, Civitavecchia, Italy, is one of the most popular destinations for travellers in the Mediterranean and the start of their trip. The train station is a 10-minute walk from the port. Trains leave for Rome's Termini Station every 20 minutes and take about one hour and 15 minutes. Buses also come from Rome. Trains do not run direct to Fiumicino Airport; travelers must go first to Rome, and transfer trains. Total travel time one-way is at least two hours. Civitavecchia was settled in 108 A.D. by the Emperor Trajan and has since served faithfully as a gateway to the capital of the Empire Rome. Once the center of the Ancient World from which emperors ruled over nearly all of western civilization, Rome is still a cultural mecca. Stroll the ancient halls of the Colosseum or gaze upon the ceilings of the Sistine Chapel. Rome seems to have its own gravitational pull, attracting not only millions of tourists each year, but also the most creative artists and thinkers of every era. All that surrounds a visitor in Rome, the stunning art and architecture, the grandeur of scale and the lively citizens guarantees an unforgettable trip. If it's Rome's views you're after, climb up into the dome of St. Peter's or admire the panorama from the top of the Spanish Steps at sunset. Wear comfortable shoes as walking in Rome is the best way to experience the city. As a rule, most churches are open in the morning, close around 12:30 pm for lunch and reopen at 3:30 pm. Keep these guidelines in mind and you'll avoid the dreaded chiuso (closed) sign. The city of Rome has a wide selection of passes that offer discounts on admission to many of the most popular historic sites, museums and galleries. Rome is a great open-air museum with a high concentration of monuments, churches and artwork, enmeshed in a modern city. Even the smallest courtyard hidden in the narrowest street may hold a tiny, wonderful detail whether that is a decorated sidewalk or a stray column, fresco or fountain. The ancient Forums, Palatine Hill, Foro di Traiano, Piazza del Campidoglio Basilica di San Pietro; the Fountains of Piazza Navona; the Spanish Steps; The Pantheon; Trevi Fountain; Circo Massimo; the catacombs and monuments along the ancient Appian Way; Piazza del Popolo and the Pincio Gardens above it. The Colosseum of course, is a must see and one of the defining architectural designs of human history as the largest Amphitheatre ever built. Vatican City must be seen as is the centre of the catholic world. The Musei Vaticani, are the museums that are located within the Vatican s boundaries highlighting the history of the Vatican and the Catholic Church. The Sistine Chapel is found in the Apostolic Palace, the official residence of the pope. St. Peter s Basilica is the world s largest basilica of Christianity and a historic landmark. There are countless pieces of Art to be found including the sculptures, frescoes and Tabularium of the Musei Capitolini, the phenomenal art at the Museo e Galleria Borghese, Palazzo Barberini, Galleria Nazionale d'arte Moderna e Contemporanea and the privately owned Galleria Doria Pamphilj. These are just some of the countless number of historic and modern sights to see in Rome.

La Spezia, Italy Beaches overlooking a crystal-clear sea, spectacular views, a marvelous artistic legacy, and small villages set within green valleys, alive with ancient traditions: all this and much more await visitors in the Province of La Spezia. One of the most wonderful stretches of the Ligurian Riviera can be found here: Golfo dei Poeti (Poets Gulf), named for the love that many great writers and poets have demonstrated for this land. Steep cliffs, dense pine woods, romantic coves and exceptional beaches, along with picturesque villages perched atop the bluffs, draw the coastal landscape, striking the visitor's eye with all their beauty. The beauty of the coast and the maritime villages are, undoubtedly, the main attraction of the area; however, La Spezia has in store a few surprises. A walk along the promenade reveals a great panorama over the entire bay, with the Apuan Alps dominating the view. Another scenic gem can be admired from Castello di San Giorgio, renovated over time and recently restored to house the Museo Civico Formentini and its interesting archaeological collection. Among the other museums, noteworthy are the CAMeC the Center for Modern and Contemporary Art - exhibiting a vast collection from the early 20th Century, and the Museo Civico Amedeo Lia, with masterpieces from Sebastiano del Piombo, Tintoretto, Tiziano and Pontormo. The town offers fantastic shopping opportunities, as well as plenty of trattorias to enjoy local, Ligurian cuisine. Its 1800s maritime arsenal and the Technical Naval Museum, with ship models and navigational instruments, attest to the city s seafaring heritage. The hilltop St. George s Castle houses an archaeological museum with artifacts from prehistory to the Middle Ages. The nearby Amedeo Lia Museum exhibits paintings, bronze sculptures and illuminated miniatures in a former convent. Lerici and Porto Venere, facing each other across the Gulf of La Spezia, are must-see destinations. The icon of Lerici is its impressive Castle, one of the most interesting defensive structures in the Region, and where one can enjoy an unobstructed view of Palmaria Island. Narrow carruggi and steep stairs wind past the picturesque houses of Lerici s old town. Nice (Villefranche), France Nice, capital of the Alpes-Maritimes department on the French Riviera, sits on the pebbly shores of the Baie des Anges. Both elegant and simple, Nice s charm comes from its exceptional climate as well as its beauty. Even in the winter, the café terraces are filled with people happily drinking and contemplating the ultra famous Promenade des Anglais. Always in flower, this wonderful walk follows

along the bay, looking out onto the Baie des Anges and the beaches. Founded by the Greeks and later a retreat for 19th-century European elite, the city has also long attracted artists. Former resident Henri Matisse is honored with a career-spanning collection of paintings at Musée Matisse. Musée Marc Chagall features some of its namesake's major religious works. This jewel of the French Riviera is home to some of the world s most luxurious hotels and terraced cafés. Stroll the ultra-famous Promenade des Anglais or see masterpieces by Matisse, Renoir, Monet and Chagall in one of Nice s many museums. The only way to get to know the real Nice is by strolling through the ochre coloured streets listening to the Nicois speaking their own language (Nissart) and by tasting their savory cooking. Barcelona, Spain Barcelona, located at the Mediterranean sea in the very north of the Spanish coast, is certainly the most cosmopolitan city in Spain. It has always proved its will to be modern, to follow the latest international tendencies or be ahead of them. To the tourist this is evident specially in its architecture, which so well reflects the general approach to life in this always pulsating city. Of course, Barcelona has an old history, and there are monuments of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance periods or still before, but most characteristic is what has been built during the last 100 years. Barcelona has been a center for Modernist architecture and is distinguished specially by the works of genial Antoní Gaudí, who together with his great contemporaries gave new and exciting looks to it, but has remained since then at the top of modernity.

Barcelona, the cosmopolitan capital of Spain s Catalonia region, is known for its art and architecture. Formerly a sleepy Spanish city, Barcelona has recently been reborn as an eclectic fusion of the modern and medieval. Seek inspiration from the creations of its modernist architect, Antonio Gaudí, or the Picasso Museum. Or, take in the breathtaking cathedrals in the Gothic Quarter. Visit the Sagrada Familia by Antonio Gaudi (Giant Basilica), which has been under contrsutcion since Take a stroll along Las Ramblas, Barcelona s most famous boulevard. Here you will not only find many interesting shops, restaurants and buildings but also street performers. Park Güell is a wonderful large park designed by Antoni Gaudí. You can enter the park free of charge however there is also an area called the "Monumental Area" which you would have to pay to get into. When you visit the park you will see amazing stone structures, colourful ceramic tiles and the house were Gaudí lived. You can easily spend half a day on a visit to this park. Málaga, Spain Málaga is the gateway to the Andalusian countryside and the Costa del Sol, some of the region s most impressive beaches. It also is home to a number of magnificent palaces, including the Moorish Alcabaza and Gibralfaro. Málaga is a world apart from the adjoining Costa del Sol: a historic and culturally rich provincial capital which has long lived in the shadow of the iconic Andalucian cities of Granada, Córdoba and Seville. Yet, it has rapidly emerged as the province's city of culture with its so-called 'mile of art' being compared to Madrid, and its dynamism and fine dining to Barcelona.

The tastefully restored historic centre is a delight: its Gothic cathedral is surrounded by narrow pedestrian streets flanked by traditional and modern bars, and shops that range from idiosyncratic and family owned, to urban-chic and contemporary. Cast your eyes up to enjoy a skyline that reflects the city s eclectic character; church spires jostle for space with russet-red tiled roofs and lofty apartment buildings while, like a grand old dame, the 11th-century Gibralfaro castle sits grandly aloft and provides the best view of all. Gibraltar, United Kingdom Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory and headland, on Spain's south coast. It s dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar, a 426m-high limestone ridge. First settled by the Moors in the Middle Ages and later ruled by Spain, the outpost was ceded to the British in Layers of fortifications include the remains of a 14th-century Moorish Castle and the 18th century Great Siege Tunnels, which were expanded in WWII. The great Rock of Gibraltar is a sight to behold. Made of limestone, it towers 1,400 feet above the mouth of the majestic Mediterranean Sea and is surrounded by beautiful countryside and a nature reserve. Gibraltar's swashbuckling history quickly unfolds in the Gibraltar Museum, which is comprised of a labyrinth of rooms ranging from prehistoric and Phoenician Gibraltar to the infamous Great Siege ( ). Don t miss the well-preserved 14th-century Islamic baths, and an intricately painted 7th-century BC Egyptian mummy found in the bay in the 1800s.

About 25 minutes' walk south down St Michael's Rd from the top cable-car station (or up from the Apes' Den), St Michael's Cave is a big natural grotto that was once home to Neolithic inhabitants of the Rock. Today, apart from attracting tourists in droves, it's used for concerts, plays, even fashion shows. Cartagena, Spain Cartagena is a port city and naval base in the Murcia region of southeast Spain. Founded by the Carthaginians around 220 B.C., the city boomed during the Roman period. Among its many Roman ruins are a 1st-century B.C. theater and Casa de la Fortuna, a villa with murals and mosaics. The Muralla Púnica (Punic Wall) interpretation center houses the remains of a 3rd-century B.C. defensive wall. During the 16th and 17th centuries, when Spain held sway over the rest of Europe and the New World, much of its naval power was projected from the port of Cartagena. Many of the coastal fortifications from that era still exist, although instead of guarding the city, they provide splendid views of the harbor. Situated on a hill facing the city, Castillo de los Morosstands is a reasonably well-preserved eighteenth century castle built in a French-influenced neoclassical style. The History Interpretation Center located within the castle is designed to help visitors understand the history of Cartagena. A well-tended garden covers the castle s hill. To get there you can walk uphill from town or ride the panoramic lift from in calle Gisbert. The Roman theatre exemplifies the rich history of Cartagena. Discovered in 1987 and rebuilt until 2003, this theatre was built between the 5th and 3rd century BC and used as such until the 3rd century AD, when a market replaced it. In 435 the entire city was destroyed by the Vandals. In the 13th century, after Byzantine, Visigoth and Muslim occupations, a cathedral was built onsite using stones from the theatre but was destroyed in the 16th century. Today, a museum passes underneath a palace and a church before reaching the theatre at the end. Located at the south-east of the Murcian Community, the Little Sea (Mar Menor) is the largest salt water lagoon in Europe. The saline water is separated from the mediterranean by a sand bank with a

length of 24 km of La Manga (The Strip). The area is known for its mineral-rich water that is thought to have therapeutic effects. Ibiza, Spain Ibiza, an island in the Mediterranean Sea off the eastern coast of Spain, is, to many, synonymous with world-famous mega-clubs, which are the summertime meccas for so many celebrities and DJs. However, Ibiza is also one of the Mediterranean s most beautiful islands Ibiza Town is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site with mystical islets and hidden coves that beg to be explored. Ibiza s most contemporary attraction is a stunning monument that locals have called Stonehenge. A semicircle of 13 basalt columns, it was created by Australian artist Andrew Rodgers and commissioned by Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté. One of the columns is 20m high with a gilded top. Stonehenge is on a rocky coastal shelf, a 10-minute walk south of Cala Codolar. It's a perfect sunset spot, away from the crowds. The Museu Etnogràfic concentrates on Ibiza's rural heritage and occupies a stunning old casament (farmhouse). In its porxo (long room) are carpentry tools and musical instruments including drums made from pine and animal skins. Other exhibits include billowing wedding dresses, ceremonial necklaces, and an huge olive oil press. The beautiful whitewashed structure of Esglesia de Puig de Missa dates back to Its most impressive features are its defence tower (used as a shelter during pirate attacks) and wonderful entrance porch (complete with mighty supporting pillars). Inside, its interior is simple and whitewashed throughout, except for the dramatic Churrigueresque-style altar.

Currency & Tipping in Italy Currency in Italy is the Euro ( ). Italians usually do not tip, as waiters, housekeeping staff and so forth are paid a wage. Most times, a service charge (servizio) is tacked onto restaurant bills and is designated separately. If the service charge is included, do not tip. If it is not included and you have had very good service, most Italians will round up the bill a few extra Euros. Tipping in taxis is not obligatory, either, but most people round up to the next euro. Currency & Tipping in France Currency in France is the Euro ( ). It is expected to tip taxi drivers approximately 10% of the fare. You should also tip waiters and waitresses 1 to 3 at a casual eatery or 5% of a bill for a fancier spot.

Currency and Tipping in Spain Currency in France is the Euro ( ). Leaving the small change behind to round up to the nearest Euro is the most common. Maybe an extra Euro or 2 if the service was very good and added value. In restaurants then upscale tipping can be expected. The usual is 10%. There are no added service charges on the final bill at most restaurants or bars, although some higher priced restaurants may add IVA (Value added tax, currently 18% going up to 20% on the 1st September 2012) to the final bill. This should be clearly seen in the menu. Currency and Tipping in Gibraltar Currency in Gibraltar is the Pound Sterling. Some businesses accept euros, although exchange rates may not necessarily be favourable. Change is normally given in Sterling. In restaurants, 10% tips are acceptable.
