7 3. Saturday 2nd June 2018 EXCURSION VISIT TO BIDDULPH GRANGE GARDEN - A NATIONAL TRUST PROPERTY Described as a formal Victorian horticultural masterpiece, this 15 acre garden was created by James Bateman in 1840 and reflects his interest in Botany and the sponsorship of overseas plant collectors. Grade 1 listed, the garden is noted for its separate rooms or zones, which by virtue of their microclimates, plants and architecture, illustrate places as diverse as China and Italy. Of interest too is the oldest Stumpery in the country. There are also exhibitions, a plant centre, kitchen garden, tea room and shop to visit. After coffee, on arrival at Bidduph we are hoping to have an introductory talk about the garden and its history. Members can then explore the garden at their leisure; there are some inclines and steps. In the afternoon for those interested and if time allows, there will be an optional walk of about 2 miles in Biddulph Grange Country Park - this is next to the Garden and was once part of the Grange estate. Bring a packed lunch and drink - the picnic area is near the car park or use the tea room. Boots or stout shoes and waterproofs are recommended, and walking poles if normally used. There are toilets in the Garden and Country Park. Leaders: Betty Smith & June Patterson More details: or Admission to Garden: Non- NT members: 9.05 Free to NT members Coach Fare: 22 Please book by Friday 18th May 2018

The area is designated as an Area of Special Conservation with many limestone fossils and interesting flora. There are fabulous views over the Dee Estuary and Clwydian range. Bring a packed lunch and a drink. Binoculars, stout footwear, walking poles and waterproofs are recommended. Cars leave Prestatyn Car Park at 10.00am or meet at the Blue Bell Inn at 10.45am. Directions: Take Junction 32 off the A55 to B5123. Proceed through Pentre Halkyn to arrive at Halkyn (Helygain). Park at the Blue Bell Inn. 9 5. Saturday 30th June 2018 WALK 4 miles A CIRCULAR WALK FROM LLANGYNHAFAL THROUGH THE AONB IN THE VALE OF CLWYD Leaving the village we will walk a short distance to the Church of St Cynfal, part of which dates to 15th century. The Church retains its late medieval roof and font and has a double nave. Leaving the church we join the Country Park route with spectacular views of the Vale of Clwyd. We take a short detour to visit the holy well known as Ffynnon Cynhafal; these waters were famous for curing warts and other ailments and were also used for baptisms in the church. There are five stiles and depending on the weather the path could be muddy, so wear stout footwear, and bring waterproofs and walking poles if used. Also a packed lunch and a drink. Cars leave Prestatyn car park at 9.30am or meet at Llangynhafal ready to start the walk at 10.30am. Directions: Via Rhuddlan take the A525 to Trefnant and turn left at the traffic lights on to the A541 signed Mold. Just before Bodfari turn right onto the B5429 signed Llandyrnog. Drive into the car park on left of the pub. OS ref: SJ129635; Postcode: LL16 4LN Leaders: Pam Collins & Margaret Redford. More details: or Car Share: 3

10 6. Saturday 21st July 2018 EXCURSION NORTON PRIORY MUSEUM & GARDENS The Priory is the most excavated monastic site in Europe; there are ruins of an Abbey, a 12th Century under croft and an 18th Century Georgian walled garden. It is located in tranquil woodland and wild flower meadows. The new museum, opened in 2016, displays thousands of artefacts from Norton s 900 year history, including a 14th Century statue of St Christopher. The museum site is surrounded by woodland gardens with paths leading to a summer house, a sculpture trail and a meandering stream. The Georgian walled garden is about 500 metres away, a 10 minute walk from the museum site, and is home to the National Collection of Quince, fruit trees, a herb garden and a rose walk. Wear comfortable shoes as there are uneven surfaces around the ruins, waterproofs as ever and a packed lunch and a drink. There is a picnic site outside the museum, or The Brooke café in the Museum serves hot meals, sandwiches, soup and cakes etc. The tearoom in the Walled Garden serves tea, coffee and cakes. Toilets are located in both the museum and walled garden. A small lake, Llyn Ochyn and the Millenium Oak trees, planted by Nercwys Community can also be seen. It is also hoped that we will visit Bryn Alyn, the second largest limestone pavement in Britain. It is relatively easy walking in the forest but can be muddy as horses and bicycles use it. There are several stiles on the route to Bryn Alyn.
