The first traces of settlement in the Chiusi della Verna zone date back to the Etruscan-Roman age, as shown by the numerous archaeological remains found in the zone, such as necropolises dating from those periods. During the Middle Ages, its position on the major roadway axis known as the "Via Romea", which connected the city of Arezzo with the Romagna, lent it noteworthy importance. During the 15thcentury Chiusi della Verna was repeatedly attacked by outside enemies: at first the troops of the Duchy of Milan, led by Niccolò Piccinino, and then those of Bartolomeo d'alviano, who, having allied themselves, for the occasion, with the House of Medici, conquered the burgh and placed it under the jurisdiction of the Republic of Florence. From that point on, Chiusi della Verna remained under the influence of Florence, being governed first by the Grand Dukes of the Medici family and later by the Dukes of Lorraine, who came to power at the start of the 18thcentury.
