1 PRE-CONGRESS TOUR to DALARNA and round LAKE SILJAN May The ancient province of Dalarna ( Dalecarlia) with Lake Siljan is situated in central Sweden about 3 hours drive from Stockholm. Dalarna, sometimes called Sweden in miniature is the very essence of Swedish nature and culture. The varied landscape includes mountains in the north giving the setting to a world- famous cross-country ski race the 90 km Vasalopppet-, waterfalls, rivers, deep forests, glittering lakes and open rolling farmland. Dalarna is known for red painted cottages, men and women in colourful folk costumes celebrating midsummer, dancing around a maypole and handicraft not to least the brightly coloured wooden Dala Horse. The beautiful landscape and the flourishing culture has inspired many of Sweden s most well known artists such as painters Anders Zorn and Carl Larsson, composer Hugo Alfvén and poet Karl Axel Karlfeldt,who in the late 19th and early 20th century settled in Dalarna. Many of their homes are open to the public. The people of Dalarna have played an important part in the Swedish history when they 1521were instrumental in helping the future King Gustaf Vasa free Sweden from Danish rule. Since then no foreign country has managed to invade or rule Sweden The copper mine at Falun and the many iron mines of Bergslagen have been of great importance to the developing of Swedish economy, contributed to Sweden s rise to a European power in the 17th century and became the foundation of the Swedish industry The Great Copper Mine, parts of Falun and the charming neighbouring master miners s estates were appointed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in * * * * * 1

2 May Departure from Clarion Hotel Lunch at Staberg Garden Café. Gamla Staberg is one of the best-preserved mineowner s estates in Kopparbergslagen. Here the visitors will find both red-painted timber buildings from the end of the 17th century and a newly restored baroque garden. Gamla Staberg gives an unusually good all-round picture of how a prominent mine-owning family was able to manifest its status at the end of the 17th century and in the 18th century by shaping its estate in the baroque style of the Caroline era. Carl Larsson Gården Välkommen kära du till Carl Larsson och hans fru (Welcome to the house of Carl Larsson and his spouse) This is written above the entrance to Carl and Karin Larssons s beloved Lilla Hyttnäs in Sunborn just outside Falun. Here at Carl Larsson gården we will have a guided tour in one of the world s best known and most depictured artist s home. On our way to the hotel we make a short stop at the Linnaeus Wedding House with its splendid wall paintings from the 18 th century. Carolus Linnaeus great botanist is said to have celebrated his wedding here with the daughter of the estate owner Arrival at the Green Hotel in Tällberg. 3 May A whole day Tour round Lake Siljan First stop at Nusnäs handicraft centre. Here we can follow the manufacturing of The Dala Horse - a brightly coloured symbol of Sweden. In Mora, 45 minutes drive from Nusnäs we will meet Anders Zorn ( ). He has often been called the painters painter. A virtuoso artist in everything he did, Zorn created art that is simultaneously earnest and sensuous, everyday and exclusive. No one painted water like Zorn or created portraits with the same bravura or depicted women as sensually. We will visit Zorn in The Zorn Museum and be seduced by his art. There will also be a guided tour of Zorngården - the unique residence of Anders and Emma Zorn from the 1880ies Lunch Next visit is to the village Våmhus known for its handicrafts tradition of basketry and hair work jewellery. Hair work is an old tradition in Våmhus. During the 19th century many hair workers, hårkullor travelled far away to sell their products. Today Våmhus is a major centre of hair works such as bracelets, necklace and brooches. The way back to the hotel goes on the eastern side of the lake Siljan and will give us beautiful scenery Dinner Entertainment by folk musicians will give examples of the traditional folk music much maintained in Dalarna. 3

4 May Leaving the hotel for Stockholm with interesting stops on the way. First stop close to Leksand at Jobs Handtryck- a print workshop started 1944 by the three siblings Jobs. Here we can follow how these floral fabrics with their timeless unique design are printed entirely by hand. There will be time for some shopping. Next stop at Hildasholm- a manor house beautifully situated by Lake Siljan built in 1910 by the doctor and writer Axel Munthe, physician to Sweden s Queen Viktoria and creator of San Michele on Capri. Axel Munthe had the house built as a gift to his English wife Hilda Pennington, who primarily lived there during the summers together with the couple s two sons. The home remains intact and is open to the public Lunch at the Falun copper mine. In the 17 th century, the Great Copper Mine in Falun was the biggest in the world and provided copper for coins, church spires and castle roofs across Europe and financed Sweden s Age of Greatness. The Falun Mine is one of the best preserved historical mining areas in the world and part of Falun, the mine and the industrial landscape were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage sites in There will be a guided tour 67 metres underground, walking and exploring winding passageways and mighty caverns (many stairs). If you prefer remaining above ground a guided walk will be arranged around the open pit-mine Stora Stöten. Please notice that the registration for the tour is valid first after that Lyceum Club Stockholm has received the payment not later than January 31, 2019 The Pre-tour will be carried through with a minimum of 35 and maximum 48 participants. Cancellation policy: Before March 1, 2019 the full amount will be refunded except an administration fee of 500 SEK. Thereafter no refund. When booking a double room, please indicate with whom you are sharing. Otherwise you will be charged a single room. In the Great Copper Mine of Falun there is a choice of a guided tour 67 m under ground and a guided walk above ground around the open pit-mine. The underground tour is a little more adventurous. Please indicate your choice, above- or under ground when registering for the Pre-tour. There will be some walking and staircases and visits with no elevator during the trip. Comfortable shoes are recommended.
