It is ours in summer and winter, but we conquer it on snow, take a break with a good culinary offer in the Stara koča cabin and ride with our grandchildren along the adrenalin toboggan run. 6 Winter FOR WINTER EXPERIENCES At 1,517 metres of altitude the world is white like a fairytale. Especially on winter days, when the plains rest under a thick fluffy blanket of snow and the mighty pines of Pohorje are bending under their carpet of snow. 6

7 Also for the most demanding Excellently prepared ski slopes and ski-run tracks where the best Slovene ski-runner, Petra Majdič, is also preparing to provide many sport enjoyments for skiers and ski-runners. 100 days of skiing Rogla offers ski pleasures from late fall to early spring. At least 100 skiing days are ensured for skiers on carefully organised ski slopes, since all ski slopes are equipped with devices for the production of artificial snow. Children A family-friendly centre offers pleasures also for small children. Some enjoy their first turns in the snow sports school, while others have fun in the kindergarten on snow. Free-style Those who have plenty of energy and adrenalin get around well at the hurdles in the Fun Park Rogla, on a polygon for free-style snowboarders and skiers, located along the left side of the ski slope Mašin Žaga. The Fun park Rogla consists of a half pipe in the upper part and fifteen»slope-style elements«where free-style snowboarders and skiers perform their own elements in the middle or even the lower part. Some ski jumps made from the natural contours of the ground, referred to as»kickers«, are in the lower part and two»big air«ski jumps are placed directly before the finish line. Cross-country skiing The increasing popularity of crosscountry skiing is also reflected in the new ski-run polygon which is intended for recreational ski-runners, numerous pupils who get to know ski-running in the school in nature and top ski-runners. Tracks for recreational and competition ski-running and a start-finish arena are organised within the framework of the Ski Centre Rogla. With the renewal and completion of the system of existing ski-run tracks, the conditions for the realisation of the most demanding international competitions are fulfilled. In the 2009/2010 season Rogla hosted the competition for the World Cup Cross-country for the first time. Skomarska hiša house Skomarska hiša was built in 1803 and clearly bears witness to the lifestyle of the local people of Pohorje almost two centuries ago. Apart from the Museum of Farm Building Architecture it is mainly the scene of all cultural events. It consists of an memorial room arranged in dedication to the Poet and Actor Jurij Vodovnik of Pohorje. 26 Ošlak forge From all the remains of the old blacksmith s craft ion the area of Zreče, only the O šlak s forge in Boharina is still preserved. According to the written sources, the forge is said to be built around the year However, the narrower side of the facade above the entrance reveals, besides some forge decorations, also the year 1789, when the building got its present image. The main room in the building is the blacksmith s workshop. The smaller room is a storeroom for the materials and products. Besides the sledge-hammer and whetstone, one can also see the water-powered air pump, and the dual-direction piston air pump. The forge put out the fire only five years ago. Today, it is protected as a technical museum. Brinjeva gora Brinjeva gora is a popular excursion site at 623 m above sea level, and it prides itself upon its extremely rich history. The first traces of settlement date back to around 2000 B.C., to the days of the New Stone Age. Brinjeva gora was inhabited throughout the entire Bronze Age and Iron Age. Later, even the Celts and the Romans came and settled the land, and the process was finally ended by the Old Slavonic people. In the Middle Ages, the place was most known for the Freudenberg Castle. Today, a traveller is welcomed by the Mother of God Church and the Church of St. Agnes. Moreover, a few steps further above the vineyards one can visit the Church of St. Martin. In addition, the nearby Zimrajh Inn offers the unique experience of drinking a cup of coffee on the ancient Roman burial grounds.

27 Beškovnik s Granary Beškovnik s Granary is a part of a house in the hamlet of Šentvid, some 7 km from Vitanje on the slope of a hill with the picturesque Church of St. Vid. A Roman cemetery with a chapel below it is also located in the vicinity. The house from the beginning of the 19th Century consists of the plastered wooden house, the farmer s retirement house, a commercial facility and a Granary dating from This unique Granary is wooden, covered with shingles and placed on a cellar built with stone. It has a Museum of old objects which used to be used for the sowing of cereals, baking bread and as household utensils and tools for craftsmen. Pilgrim Church Prihova The Pilgrim Church Prihova was built in the middle of the 15 th Century. The stimulation for its construction was a Cherry tree which was flowering at Christmas, which people saw as a special hint from God. At this location firstly a Chapel to honour Mary the Flower was built, followed by the Church in Anton Martin Slomšek also served the Church in Prihova. Carthusian Monastery at Žiče Through the village of Žiče and then the valley of St. John, the path brings us to the mysterious Carthusian Monastery at Žiče. In this isolated and narrow valley the owner of the property at the time, the Styrian Border Count Otokar III decided to establish a home for the monks from the Great Carthusian Monastery in France around These started with the construction of most buildings, at first wooden and later wholly made of brick after their arrival in In the 15 th Century the building where the Gastuž Pub is located today was constructed, which is one of the oldest preserved Pubs in Central Europe. The Order s life died away when in 1782 the Emperor at the time, Joseph II, abolished the functioning of the Carthusian Monastery at Žiče with a Decree. After 1827 the buildings began to decay slowly, but over the last few years life is returning to the Monastery. Old town centre of Slovenske Konjice The Roman path winds through the old town centre of Slovenske Konjice and, according to one of the legends, it was from this period that the town of Slovenske Konjice got its name from the resting place for harnesses. The town of flowers and wine is becoming an example of kindness and organisation. A walk through the town and the old square, with a stop in the Town Gallery Riemer, at the Church of St. George or at the very edge of town in the Trebnik Mansion, offers the greatest experiences. The latter surprises the traveller with its variety despite its peaceful appearance. Guests are accepted by real Castle staff and invited into the herb gallery. Ethnological Museum near the Church of St. Barbara The Ethnological Museum with the Sacristan s house and black kitchen can be found near the Church of St. Barbara. It was built in the 16 th Century. It was very simple, which was a characteristic of houses at the time. Today, different activities are organised in the Sacristan s house by Societies and local people, thus preserving the old farm customs. Herman Potočnik Noordung People are proud if any famous people lived in their home town. The local people of Vitanje are especially proud of the name of Herman Potočnik who has recently become more known and marked the field of rocket engineering. In 1928 a book titled The problem of space travelling under the pseudonym Noordnung was published. The book is a breaking point in the world of space rocket engineering. The book offers many solutions which enable the residence of a human in space. In the Mansion where the grandfather of Potočnik was the Manager of the property of Vitanje, a memorial room dedicated to Potočnik which is equipped with modern projection units and monitors for the presentation of the ideas of Potočnik and his solutions for conquering space is open to visitors. 27
