3 CLIA Europe NEWS July 17 CLIA UK Conference 2017 Brings the Travel Industry #Together CLIA UK & Ireland welcomed the cruise industry s most prominent figures to speak at its 11th annual CLIA Conference, which took place in Southampton from 24 to 26 May A record number of over 460 travel agents attended networking, training and conference sessions. The 2017 CLIA Conference theme Together reflected again the tremendous collaboration with cruise experts, and enhanced the sense of community that enables agents and industry figures to share knowledge and continue to grow sales for this innovative sector. This year s event welcomed influential figures to the stage. They included Christine Duffy, President, Carnival Cruise Line; Rudi Schreiner, President and Co-Owner, AmaWaterways; Gavin Smith, Senior Vice President International, Royal Caribbean Cruises Limited and Cindy D Aoust, President and CEO, CLIA. The event shone a spotlight on the high quality of cruise entertainment and its innovative developments. On the morning of day one, agents were invited to visit Cunard s newly refurbished Queen Mary 2, before learning and networking at the Great British Cruise Fair in the afternoon. Day two was dedicated to conference sessions, seminars and a gala dinner. Andy Harmer, SVP Membership & Director, CLIA UK & Ireland had announced exciting plans including the agent Do Something New June campaign, names of destination experts speaking at this year s Cruise360 Copenhagen and news that the River Cruise Conference 2018 will be held in Vietnam. Agents spent the final day visiting Royal Caribbean International s Navigator of the Seas, hosted by Stuart Leven, Vice President EMEA and Managing Director RCL Cruises Ltd, where they were invited to lunch and entertainment. News that the River Cruise Conference 2018 will be held in Vietnam A memorable press conference for more than 150 attending journalists... Media focus in Berlin Photo source: ITB In March 2017, the tourism industry gathered in Germany for ITB Berlin, the world s largest travel trade show. It features more than 10,000 exhibitors each year. Also on board for the fourth time: the European cruise industry. The cruise industry regularly comes together for a press conference at ITB Berlin, hosted by CLIA Germany, the German Travel Association and IG RiverCruise. The event confirmed CLIA s position as a go-to source for cruise-related information. A memorable press conference for more than 150 attending journalists and industry representatives was organized by CLIA Germany. Holiday mood was created with palm trees and the room lighted all blue. A film featuring footage by CLIA s cruise line members was a highlight. It showed the variety and benefits of cruising, such as the comfort on board and the adventures awaiting passengers. Presentations of the annual reports on the German ocean and river cruise markets were made by Karl J. Pojer, Chairman of CLIA Germany s Leadership Council, and two industry peers. The ocean cruise market continued its growth: for the first time ever, more than 2m passengers went on a cruise in 2016 an increase of more than 11% compared to The presented figures triggered broad media coverage generating more than 1,300 pick-ups by now. A new record as well. These numbers show that the trend of the early 1990s has turned into a success story that continues to be written, Pojer said. German National Director Helge Grammerstorf added: Cruising stands for variety, mobility and an excellent priceperformance ratio. That s its formula for success. The positive development is about to continue. Proud to be Part of the Prize Winning HELCOM Maritime Working Group The HELCOM Maritime Working Group, of which CLIA is an active member, has been awarded the Baltic Sea Fund Prize 2017 for its work to reduce pollution from maritime traffic in the Baltic Sea. The Baltic Sea Fund (Östersjöfonden) based in Mariehamn, Åland, has awarded the Baltic Sea Fund Prize to individuals and organizations for significant and outstanding contribution to the Baltic Sea environment since The HELCOM Maritime Working Group established in 1975 is an advisory body of the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) which consists of representatives of coastal countries, EU and observer organizations (industry and environmental NGOs). CLIA Europe is currently working actively with HELCOM on sewage discharge issue in the Baltic, in particular in light of the entry into force of MARPOL annex IV in 2019, to further secure cruise lines operation in the region. CLIA joins Confcommercio in Italy CLIA joined Confcommercio, the General Confederation of Enterprises, Professions and Self-Employment, the largest business association in Italy, on February 12. CLIA s European Secretary General, Tom Fecke, came to Rome to sign the agreement. He met key media on the day and presented the new agreement, also explaining CLIA s policies for protection of air and oceans and its best practices. The agreement and positioning was well reported in newspapers, radio, television and press agencies, this activity countered some of the NGO s communication. Moreover, CLIA generated awareness in a wide variety of the Italian media. 3
4 CLIA Europe NEWS July 17 DESTINATION FOCUS The Future of the Adriatic CLIA sends encouragement This region deserves the cruise industry s economic contribution as it will increasingly provide genuine interest from international cruise visitors, and CLIA can assist with such expansion 4 The Adriatic, this jewel in the Mediterranean crown, this cul de sac ending in Venice, is home to historical ports and cities still little known by non-european cruisers. The Adriatic Sea is that ancient Mediterranean buffer between Europe s Italian Peninsula and the Balkan Peninsula. Historically, economically and cultural they link two spheres of Europe historically, yet the differences between the two peninsulas are vast and intriguing. There is even more to discover said Tom Fecke, General Secretary CLIA Europe, invited to speak at the 2017 Budva Adriatic Sea Forum on 27 April on the Future of the Adriatic. He encouraged Croatian decision makers to further engage with cruise lines and tourism partners to improve their visibility and sustainability for tourism in their countries and the Adriatic Balkans. This region deserves the cruise industry s economic contribution as it will increasingly provide genuine interest from international cruise visitors, and CLIA can assist with such expansion, he added. Here is a quick tour of six top stops of the amazing Balkan side destinations: Brac an island that makes its living from limestone quarries. This limestone was used to build some of the columns in the White House ; Mljet boasts Croatia s oldest national park and a delightful walk around two brilliant blue salt-water lakes, with a challenging hike to an amazing vista over the lakes and the Adriatic beyond Hvar the sunniest island in Croatia, this was a Venetian naval base during the golden era of Venice and a thriving modern-day lavender producer; Dubrovnik a UNESCO World Heritage Site and amongst the most beautiful cities on the Croatian coast, once an independent republic and medieval rival to Venice; Bay of Kotor, Montenegro arguably one of the most beautiful bays in Europe featuring UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kotor; Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina offering a flavor of Islam and the Orient, with remnants of the Turkish occupation.
5 CLIA Europe NEWS July 17 Marseille: first French port to provide incentive to eco-friendly ships Lower port fees for all ships performing better than required under air pollution regulations Marseille Fos has joined the World s Ports Climate Initiative (WPCI) and is set to reduce port dues for ships performing better than required under air pollution regulations. From July 1, this year the incentive will apply to eligible ships among the 236 container carriers and cruise vessels a 60/40% split that call at the port. Other sectors will be added in The WPCI features the Environmental Ship Index (ESI), which scores atmospheric pollution on a zero to 100 scale. Currently around 50 ports worldwide offer reduced call charges based on this index. Marseille Fos reductions will apply from a score of 35 - the level attributed to ships equipped to take shoreside electrical power at berth instead of using onboard diesel generators. In a further green initiative, Marseille Fos has launched a website link to reinforce its cooperation with AirPACA, the air quality monitoring association for the Provence-Alpes-Cote d Azur region. More passengers in the Baltic in 2017 A survey, conducted by Cruise Baltic amongst its 29 destinations, predicts record cruise traffic figures for With 4,333,529 passengers visiting the Baltic Sea Region in 2016 (1.2% over 2015), the number is expected to grow by 13.0% compared to 2016 with an increase of no less than 561,972 passengers to a total of travellers. With its rich world heritage and increased capacity, the number of calls to Cruise Baltic ports will see an increase of 15.2%, expecting 2,492 calls. The number of turnarounds should also see an increase of 3.7% from 460 in 2016 to an estimated 477 in The top five ports, Stockholm, St Petersburg and Copenhagen will grow (34%, 17.5% and 14.9%); Rostock will remain stable, while only Kiel is expecting a decrease of -13.5%.
