1 USS Constellation Overnight Adventure Historic Ships in Baltimore Pier 1, 301 East Pratt Street Baltimore, MD Revised August 2009
2 Introduction to the Overnight Adventure! The USS Constellation Overnight Adventure offers groups a unique opportunity to walk in the footsteps of sailors and learn about life aboard a mid-19 th century, U.S. Navy warship. Contained in this pre-trip package are materials that will provide you and members of your group with information about the ship, your upcoming adventure, and information that will assist you in preparing your group for the event. Participants in the overnight program become Constellation s newest crew members. Younger participants sign on as Ship s Boys and adults sign on as Landsmen, which denote novice ranks. Overnight recruits will learn the ropes and quickly develop both a working nautical vocabulary and a familiarity with the basics of life aboard a man-of-war. The items listed below are provided for you to review and to share with your group. Enclosed you will find: Introduction to the Overnight Adventure, pg. 2 Overnight Invoice & Agreement Form, pg. 3 Overnight Schedule and Activity Description, pg. 5 Overnight Checklist, pg. 7 Overnight Menus, pg. 8 To the Ship! 4 Overnight Schedule and Activity Description Please note, the schedule is subject to changes due to varying factors such as group arrival time and weather. 5:00 PM/1700 Hours Group will assemble on Pier I in Baltimore s Inner Harbor and meet the lead educator for the overnight. During inclement weather, meet in the sheltered space between the Ship s Store entrance and Museum entrance. 5:15 PM/1715 Hours Lead educator will brief participants about safety aboard ship and will induct them into life aboard Constellation. Afterwards, participants will board the ship and stow their gear. 6:00 PM/1800 Hours Hands-on Activity: Brace the Yards! Overnight participants haul the lines (braces) that move the yards that hold the sails. Participants heave round the ship s capstan. The capstan was used for lifting and moving most of the heavy objects found on a ship such as the anchors and cargo. 7:00 PM/1900 Hours Presentation: All Things Edible and Inedible: Food in the Navy! The ship s cook leads a discussion about Civil War dining. Come and find out the difference between slush, squares, and dandyfunk, and what they each have to do with dining on board a U.S. naval warship. 7:15 PM/1915 Hours Dinner 8:00 PM/2000 Hours Fire Drill followed by a full tour of Constellation. 9:00 PM/2100 Hours Scavenger Hunt! 4

12 Overnight Watch Bill Description About the Overnight Watch. A navy vessel never sleeps! Aboard Constellation during the Civil War, officers and crew remained attentive throughout each night to insure the ship s safety and security while the majority of the crew slept below decks. Although there is no risk of being attacked by Confederates, the need remains to maintain a watchful presence throughout the night and to take similar precautions. The Overnight Watch is an integral part of the Overnight Adventure. It provides a unique opportunity for participants to learn about some of the shipboard procedures and routines carried out on a man-of-war, and, perhaps most importantly, it fosters responsibility. Upon completion of the day s programming the Master-at-Arms, or lead educator, will lead a discussion about the Night Watch. After explaining the procedure and answering all pertinent questions, overnight participants will be assigned hammocks by the ship s crew according to the Night Watch Bill. Once everyone has a hammock and understands his or her duties, the Night Watch will begin. Overnight Watch Bill. The Overnight Watch Bill identifies, by name, each Watch Leader and each Watch Crew member. There must be at least one adult (Watch Leader) 21 years old or older to be responsible for each watch shift. If there are not enough adults in your overnight group, the Constellation crew will assist in manning the remaining watches. The Watch Crew are the youths in your overnight group and please be advised that when filling out the Night Watch Bill you are arranging where you will be sleeping. If you wish to be in an adjacent hammock to your child, you must be in the same watch whether or not the child is actually going to man a watch. To help expedite the evening activities, please have the Night Watch Bill filled out before arriving for your overnight adventure. Further instructions about the Night Watch will be explained by the ship s crew before Lights Out. 12
