It is important to identify specific challenges regarding implementation of the Project onboard a vessel. The Quality Safety Coach needs to share knowledge and best practices between vessels.

The motive behind this seminar is to bring to the notice of the seafarers relevant safety concerns. An analysis of accidents and incidents onboard Frontline ships over the last decade was made at the seminar; this helped delegates identify the root causes of accidents. As over 80 per cent of the accidents that occur onboard are due to human factors. In 2001 that Frontline decided to focus on these in an effort to improve safety onboard our ships. Frontline started a campaign 9 years ago in order to create an incident free environment for seafarers. It is important to identify specific challenges regarding implementation of the Project onboard a vessel. The Quality Safety Coach needs to share knowledge and best practices between vessels. He also needs to assist, guide and follow up the quality and safety work onboard. Captain Vinod George, the newly appointed Training Superintendent and Quality Safety Coach introduced himself to the delegates at the seminar. Since I have just taken over as the Training Superintendent, my first task will be to visit all the vessels. This will give me a better idea of the status of the campaign launched by Frontline, he said. Endorsing transparency, the newly appointed Superintendent stressed on the need for better communication between seniors and juniors. The task is to identify a hazard and then be able to take feedback. The juniors need to be involved in every process to be able to achieve success, Captain George said.

During the two day event, staff from SeaTeam Singapore, SeaTeam Chennai, and SeaTeam/CTI Manila joined in the feastivities which included the following Team Challenges: Sarong Race SeaTeam was divided into groups and each group 5 persons had to lip into sarong then hop across a stretch of tare, proceed to a point and then hop back to the starting point and pass the sarong to the next team member, continuing the next team member until the team complete. Each group member was blindfolded and when the instructor gave the signal, the groups had to find their group member and form a line from the tallest member to shortest member. 5 Message from the Event Coordinator Trust all of you had a great time in Batam! As the coordinator, I would like to thank all members and their families for participating actively to make our first SeaTeam event a big success. First of all, we thank our M.D. Mr Alasdair Smith for giving us an opportunity to meet one another in person, to build up our rapport, better understanding and also for his full support throughout the trip. All of us know that Alasdair took over the duty of conducting business as usual so that all of us could participate, enjoy and complete our Team Building Program with a free mind. For our India colleagues, due to time constraint, you had not sufficient time to do your shopping in Singapore City. However, it is thoughtful and considerate of Alasdair to arrange a special city-tour by taxi so that you could at least have a glimpse of the Singapore Skyline. I hope you had a great time shopping at the Duty Free shops at Changi Airport (one of the best in the World). For Capt and Mrs Maniego, thank you for making the Karaoke so lively and for recovering the camera for Madam Jayalakshmi. There is no more regret for her now. For those who could not make it this trip, we hope to have a 100% attendance in our future group gathering/s. 6 M/T Sea Hope Transit Through the Gulf of Aden A never ending love for the sea and an eternal hope for a safe and healthy life; put these two together and you get a bunch of jolly men who make up the heart and soul of our ship, known as the Sea Hope. After a spate of tiring short voyages within the Persian Gulf, the Master gave us the wonderful news of a relatively long voyage spanning to about a week. I Know the VLCC folks will be chuckling at the thought of a week s voyage being long, but trust me, when you ve been doing voyages that rarely last a day over two, a week s sailing seems to be a godsend. Obviously everyone on board was thrilled to bits but this euphoria, however, came at a cost. We would have to cross the dreaded Gulf of Aden. God must have been a happy man because from the looks of things, the 24 men onboard seemed to show a heightened sense of religion and reverence to God. Basically what I m saying is, and I try to stifle a laugh when I say this, we all started praying a lot more than we are known to. So anyway, brains were running at full ahead and ideas a brew to try and figure out how we would fend off the pirates, armed with guns and rocket propelled grenades, from coming aboard when the most potent weapons we had were a bunch of charged fire hoses. Hardly a fair fight I would think, but at the end of it all, the Master decided to make the Sea Hope a fortress no pirate could easily penetrate. Razor wires were brought in, night vision binoculars employed, armed guards planned for the laden passage and we even recreated Niagara Falls in all her glory around our ship to deter the continued on page 7

For, if not for their immense support, who knows, I might just as well be writing a ransom note, instead of this article, to the gentlemen at Seateam with a rusty gun pointed at my head. The team, headed by Captain Joemarie Hinolan, were blessed by sunny skies and ideal sea conditions that allowed waterborne deployment of both the life boat and rescue boat. Emergency drills conducted onboard are routinely photographed as a Best Practice that supports documentation that drills were carried out, providing graphic depiction of the extent of the drill so there can be no doubt that good and regular emergency exercises are in fact routine. Good routines include assessment of risks involved in performing emergency drills. HSQE form 33 job hazard analysis and risk assessment should be completed prior to launching life boats or rescue boats.
