CHAIRMAN S MESSAGE Greetings fellow volunteers, when things happen at Polly Woodside, it certainly isn t by halves. Management:- Our temporary manager Sean De Coury who is also the manager of The Old Melbourne Gaol, will now stay with us until the end of this year. The Site: The site is now closed to the public during the dry-docking period. This is disappointing for the National Trust as they have had to cancel a number of functions. To compensate for this, the National Trust have given their hirers new dates at no charge. Combine this with being closed over the school holidays, and it is not good for the Polly s finances. Spar Ceiling: Another part of the restoration is finished, thanks to Don, Barrie, Heinz, John, Peter, Richard and yours truly. The spar ceiling is finished down to the tween deck (see the photos). This was completed in 6 working days. Take a bow gentlemen. What is next? Ship s pump or pump action windlass. Dry-Docking the Ship: Due to the concerns of flooding in the pump-house, Major Projects (The State Government are now the declared owners of the pump-house) hope to rectify this problem by draining the dry-dock and sealing the pump inlets. This decision was made in June, but there was no action until Monday 17 th September. Bridge and Marine, are the accepted tenders, with Samantha Tait and Sean Johnston of the Ship Committee being the Co Dock-Masters. On receiving confirmation by the diver that the ship was 2

3 correctly aligned with the keel blocks, pumping out the dock commenced at 8am at the rate of 800 litres per minute which lowered the water level in the dock 120mm per hour. The pump-out continued for 8 hours, having pumped out 384,000 litres of water. Next day the props were fitted 5 per side, and a further 120mm of water was pumped out. Once the ship was settled on the keel and bilge blocks, and with the set-up completed, the remaining water was pumped out, leaving Polly high and dry out of her natural element. High pressure cleaning of the hull has commenced. Mission to Seafarers: Things are changing at the Mission. As you may be aware, No.5 North Shed is to be developed. A building is planned to be built spanning the heritage listed shed, and extending towards the Mission. In the Mission they are moving up to the first floor, and the ground floor is to be operated by commercial interests. As a result we feel our days there are numbered. Sweet memories! Christmas Party: Due to the Mission s proposed changes, we have altered the Christmas Party venue, your invitation is included in this Wave.. The plan is, we will commence at 10:30am with drinks in our new workshop/function room at Polly Woodside, enabling you to have a look at all the changes that taken place both on board and ashore. At noon we move to the Boat Builders Yard (ex No.4 Shed) for lunch, where you purchase your own. Drinks will be put on a tab to be covered by your Committee. Santa will arrive per usual to continue our tradition. As this venue is close to Polly, by the river, it is a great location, and we look forward to seeing you all there. 5 MELBOURNE S TALL SHIP STANDS TALL Polly Woodside sailed into first place this week, winning one of only two awards for a Permanent Exhibition (Level 3) at the Museums & Galleries National Awards (MAGNAs) in Adelaide. MAGNAs encourage the continuous improvement and development of Australian museums and galleries, inspire and recognise best practice and innovation in the collecting sector, and enhance the profile of museums and galleries in local and wider communities. The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) s new museum to tell the story of the Polly Woodside tall ship moored in the adjacent dock. Using its object collection, the Polly Woodside employs innovative museum interpretation and programs to engage wide visitor interest in the ship s history and Melbourne s maritime culture. Judges felt this was a very well developed project that pressed far into an expert interpretation of its material and subject matter, not just relying on the obvious historical strength of the major artefact (the Polly Woodside ship). Judges were impressed at how interpretation supported living conservation project objectives, thereby strengthening values of sustainability longer term. (extracted from the Museums Australia MAGNAs website) It is a real credit to the hard work and effort of many staff that this innovative experience has beaten much larger organisations efforts and placed the National Trust on top said Martin Purslow, CEO of the National Trust of Australia (Victoria). It was developed with enthusiasm and imagination on a very limited budget from a blank piece of paper and no funding over five years back, to relate a story in a way that was enjoyable and informative but also related the hardships, lows, and highs, of life on a tall ship he continued. Andy, a member of the PWVA since 1997, has been a true friend to all of us for many years. His woodworking skills, examples of which are on display all over Polly, will be sorely missed.
