1 MHS 218 Summer Module Itinerary: May 14-June 11 Overview Wednesday, May 14: Arrival to Guatemala City airport and Antigua Thursday, May 15: Antigua Friday, May 16: Antigua to Tecpán Saturday, May 17: Tecpán to Sololá (Manna) and Quetzaltenango (Primeros Pasos) Sunday, May 18: Sololá (Manna) and Quetzaltenango (Primeros Pasos) Week 1 (May 19-23): Sololá (Manna) and Quetzaltenango (Primeros Pasos) Weekend 1 (May 23-25): Quetzaltenango/ Sololá to Panajachel Week 2 (May 26-May 30): Quetzaltenango/Sololá Weekend 2 (May 30-June 1): Quetzaltenango Week 3 (June 2-June 7): Quetzaltenango/Sololá Sunday, June 8: Quetzaltenango/Sololá to Antigua Monday, June 9: Antigua Tuesday, June 10: Antigua Wednesday, June 11: departures to US Note: Guatemala is currently one hour behind CDT. Detailed Itinerary Wednesday, May 14: Arrival to Guatemala City airport and Antigua You will be picked up by a pre-arranged shuttles from La Aurora Airport in Guatemala City Airport to our hotel in Antigua, La Casa de Don Pedro (see below for address and contact information). The shuttle driver from Adrenalina Tours will meet you immediately outside of the airport; he will be holding a sign that says VISAGE. The trip to Antigua is approximately 45 minutes. Group dinner, 6pm (we will meet at our hotel). We will distribute cell phones at or before dinner.
2 Thursday, May 15: Antigua Breakfast and then orientation to Guatemala at our hotel in Antigua, followed by a group lunch. Afternoon free and dinner on your own. Lodging: La Casa de Don Pedro. Friday, May 16: Antigua to Tecpán Breakfast at our hotel in Antigua, then 10am departure for Tecpán, where we will visit one of the clinics run by Wuqu Kawoq. We will have lunch together en route, and then dinner in Tecpán with a local family. Lodging: Albergues de Tecpán. Saturday, May 17: Tecpán to Sololá (Manna) and Quetzaltenango (Primeros Pasos) Breakfast at our hotel in Tecpán; tour of Iximché and lunch together. 1pm: departure from Tecpán to Sololá, arriving at the Manna House at 2pm. Then continue to Celas Maya in Quetzaltenango to meet with homestay hosts by 5pm. Dinner with host families/in Manna house. Lodging: Manna House and homestays. Note: Celas Mayas arranged our homestays. Sunday, May 18: Sololá (Manna) and Quetzaltenango (Primeros Pasos) Respective orientations with partner organizations: Primeros Pasos students: breakfast on your own; meet at Casa Doña Mercedes at 12pm for lunch with Jamie (volunteer coordinator for Primeros Pasos). Dinner with your host families. Manna students: all meals at Manna house; Ginny Savage will give you an orientation to Sololá and Chaquijyá. Week 1 (May 19-23): Sololá (Manna) and Quetzaltenango (Primeros Pasos) Primeros Pasos students: you will meet Elizabeth and Jamie at the Calavario at 7:50am and travel to the clinic together (be on time, the bus to the clinic leaves at 8:05am). Elizabeth will bring bus fare for all of you for the week. Manna students: you will travel with Ginny to Chaquijyá from the Manna house.
3 Wednesday, May 21: Weekly afternoon seminar to discuss readings and projects. Elizabeth travels to Sololá on Wednesday May 21 afternoon. Weekend 1 (May 23-25): Quetzaltenango/ Sololá to Panajachel Friday, May 23, 1pm: Primeros Pasos students depart Quetzaltenango (meet at Casa Doña Mercedes) to travel to Chaquijyá where Manna works (we will arrive at approximately 3pm). After seeing Manna s projects in the community, we will all continue to Panajachel. Lodging: Hotel Dos Mundos in Panajachel. Saturday, May 24: Breakfast at the hotel, and then visit to Naturopathic Medicine for Global Health. The rest of Saturday afternoon/night are free. Lodging: Hotel Dos Mundos in Panajachel. Sunday, May 25: Breakfast at the hotel. Our shuttle will leave Panajachel at 2pm (from Hotel Dos Mundos) for Sololá and then Quetzaltenango. Week 2 (May 26-May 30): Quetzaltenango/Sololá Thursday, May 29: Weekly afternoon seminar to discuss readings and projects. Elizabeth travels to Sololá on Thursday May 29 afternoon. Weekend 2 (May 30-June 1): Quetzaltenango Friday, May 30: 2pm Manna students depart Sololá/Chaquijyá to travel to Quetzaltenango for the weekend. Group dinner Friday night. Lodging for Manna students: Casa Doña Mercedes. Saturday, May 31: 10am all students meet at Casa Doña Mercedes to visit communities in the Palajunoj Valley and/or visit ACAM maternity clinic in Concepcion Chiquirichapa. Saturday night free. Lodging for Manna students: Casa Doña Mercedes. Sunday, June 1: 2pm Manna students and Elizabeth depart from Casa Doña Mercedes to return to Sololá. Week 3 (June 2-June 7): Quetzaltenango/Sololá Wednesday June 4: Weekly afternoon seminar to discuss readings and projects. Saturday, June 7: free day in Quetzaltenango/Sololá
4 Sunday, June 8: Quetzaltenango/Sololá to Antigua 10am: Shuttle picks up Primeros Pasos students from Quetzaltenango. 12pm: Shuttle picks up Manna students in Sololá then continues to Antigua (group lunch en route).
