It s all about the Value Beads At YMCA Day Camp, value beads play an important role as a sign of character and personal achievement. As a form of recognition and encouragement, beads at camp promote positive behaviour, and are worn as a constant reminder of what we value as a camp community. Throughout the week, beads are awarded to campers for demonstrating the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, inclusiveness, health, responsibility, and respect. We cannot wait to go on a Day Camp adventure with you and your family this summer, as we truly believe in the power of camp and the uniqueness of a YMCA Day Camp experience! Our goal is to provide opportunities for young people to meet new peers, discover new talents, try new activities and learn more about themselves, all while having fun. What s new for summer 2018? Each year we collect feedback through our Day Camp survey from our camp families. This feedback helps us to plan for future summers, and make necessary improvements. Based on your feedback summer 2018 will include a number of enhancements including: a new camp registration process, a new platform for family involvement, and new and enhanced partnerships. New Registration Process YMCA of Niagara Day Camp is making a leap forward and moving to online registration. Our new registration system has been selected to make the registration process convenient and faster for our families. 3 Selecting the Right Camp Before you register for YMCA Day Camps, make sure you are selecting the right camp for your child. Here are some helpful hints to guide you to picking the right camps: Take the time to select camps with your child that match their interests and meet your needs. Our outdoor camps are the building blocks of our camp programming. We recommend you also select a few weeks of sports, specialty or leadership camps to give your camper a well rounded experience. At outdoor sites, activities will be offered rain or shine. Campers should dress appropriately for the weather, and will have access to a pavilion or shelter. In order to ensure developmentally appropriate activities and programming, your camper needs to be the correct age for the camps that you have selected prior to the start date. ST. 5 Outdoor Camps Our goal is to provide every child with the opportunity to experience adventure in an outdoor setting. Exploration of nature increases children s creativity and imagination, while developing an appreciation for the world around them. Outdoor camps are structured in a unique way to offer campers a residential camp experience without leaving their city. Junior Adventure/Maun Kiki (Ages 5-6) Junior Discovery (Ages 5-6) If your camper is ready to set off on a new adventure, then this is the camp for them! Campers will explore the great outdoors as they rotate through a variety of nature based activities such as hikes, creek exploration, crafts, songs and more. This camp is sure to satisfy their adventurous side while helping them gain an appreciation and awareness for the outdoors. Mini Camp (Ages 5-12) This camp offers campers the opportunity to learn and play in the great outdoors! Through team building and adventure based initiatives, campers will rediscover nature and appreciate the world we live in. In this camp, campers will rotate through various outdoor and traditional camp activities. Support from the Town of Fort Erie ensures every child has the opportunity to participate. Junior Explorers (Ages 5-6) Campers will set out on explorations right in our backyard! Campers will experience a variety of activities planned around the theme for that week that allow them to develop their imagination and exploration skills. Junior Explorers is for the curious camper who loves learning new things and going on exciting adventures. At YMCA Day Camps, we believe that every day at camp should be full of fun and discovery! From special events, value beads, camp activities and much more, this camp is designed to give campers a shorter camp experience. If your camper is ready for a blast of excitement, then this is the camp for them. To ensure all campers have the opportunity to develop friendships and experience skill development, a minimum registration of 3 days per 5 day camp week is required. Discovery (Ages 5-12) Whether it is 3 or 4 days, Daily Discovery will give campers an exciting camp experience! The day will be jam packed with fun discoveries, sports, active games, swimming, special events and more! To ensure all campers have the opportunity to develop friendships and experience skill development, a minimum registration of 3 days per 5 day camp week is required. Adventure (Ages 7-9/10-13) Through outdoor education and exploration campers will gain confidence, learn about the environment around them, and gain an appreciation for the great outdoors. Adventure campers will experience nature based programming, archery, canoeing (at select locations), nature crafts, adventure based initiatives and more! New for summer 2018, campers will be divided into Pathfinder and Challenger groups by age at the point of registration. Come on an adventure with us and spend each day outdoors exploring all that nature has to offer! 6 Sports Camps At the YMCA we know that physical activity can contribute to children s physical, emotional, and mental development. While participating in camp, all campers have the opportunity to meet or exceed the daily recommended guidelines of 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity per day. Campers will gain confidence in their ability to participate in a variety of recreational and sport activities through activities focused on developing their fundamental movement skills; and have the opportunity to explore different traditional and non-traditional sports in a supportive and non-competitive environment. Junior Sports (Ages 5-6) Designed for the physically active camper, this camp is at an introductory level and emphasizes fair play, team work and sportsmanship. A portion of every day is spent learning the rules and basic skills in a variety of traditional and non-traditional sports. Campers will develop fundamental movement skills, confidence and learn the importance of staying active. If your camper is an athlete at heart then this is the camp for them. Soccer (Ages 7-12) Designed for campers with an interest in soccer, this camp focuses on developing basic skills needed for the game. There will be daily instruction that focuses on kicking, shooting, passing and trapping as well as a variety of scrimmages, tournaments and soccer games. This camp is designed to enhance fundamental soccer skills and learn the importance of teamwork in a fun, non-competitive environment. Youth Fit (Ages 10-14) This camp will give youth the opportunity to learn what they can do to live a healthy, active lifestyle. Campers will be guided through a fitness program with one of our certified YMCA Fitness Coaches, and have supervised access to fitness equipment. Each day campers will experience a new fitness class or activity. Campers will also be learning and cooking healthy recipes based on the You re the Chef guidelines developed by Niagara Region Public Health with a balanced life in mind. Campers will also participate in traditional camper activities for a portion of the day. Join Youth Fit to have fun while embracing a healthy lifestyle! Junior Soccer (Ages 5-6) Campers are introduced to the fundamentals of soccer in a fun, non-competitive environment. Various skills, drills and games will be scheduled into the week to teach campers how to play the game. Campers will improve their skills like passing, shooting, kicking, defending, and much more. If your child has a passion for soccer, then send them to join the fun, get active, and kick it with us at Junior Soccer Camp. Sports (Ages 7-12) Campers will stay active while learning developmental skills in both traditional and non-traditional sporting activities. They will also try a variety of sports including baseball, basketball, football, soccer and much more. A portion of the day will also include traditional camp activities including swimming, special events and more. We focus on fair play, teamwork, fitness and fundamental skills all while having fun at this camp. Aquatics (Ages 7-12*) This camp is a splash! Designed to increase skills and develop an appreciation for the water, campers will participate in two swimming periods per day. One will focus on personalized instruction and goal setting while the other is recreational in nature. The remainder of the day will be spent participating in traditional camp activities such as crafts, sports and cooperative games. If your camper has a love of water then this is the camp to dive in to! *Campers must have successfully completed YMCA Swimmer Level or equivalent to register for this camp. We enjoy the variety of camps. This summer was my child s first experience with Y camp, and they enjoyed learning new activities and meeting new friends! 7 Specialty Camps Participation in a wide variety of different activities allows children to discover the activities they enjoy, while developing skills and confidence in their own abilities. Specialty camps are designed to allow children to explore new activities, while still enjoying traditional Day Camp activities. Collaboration with various professionals in their field allows the YMCA to provide campers with educational based instruction in a number of different areas. Movement and Rhythm (Ages 5-6) Campers will participate in a variety of activities that develop coordination, rhythm and balance. Campers will also have the opportunity to experience a variety of traditional camper activities including cooperative games, arts and crafts, sports, camp songs and more! Junior Mad Science (Ages 5-6) In partnership with Mad Science Niagara, our favourite high-energy scientists are ready for fun and exciting experiments. Explore a different STEM topic each day in a fun and hands-on way! Spend a day travelling through time with a visit to the Jurassic before blasting off to explore the future of space travel. Get Sticky with Chemistry and Magnetism. Investigate meteorology, and round out the week with a day of discovery with Colour and Bubbling Potions! Campers take home cool Mad Science take-homes every day! Campers will participate in Mad Science activities for up to three hours per day, and spend the remainder of the day participating in traditional camp activities. Each day, campers will head to the Lightning Gymnastics club to receive instruction by certified coaches. Campers will get to try the trampoline, balance beam, bars, vault and floor routines! The remainder of the day will be spent participating in traditional camp activities. Campers will develop flexibility, coordination and movement skills. Campers are instructed in Cheerleading, Ninja, Acro, and Tumbling by Niagara Cheerleading at their training facility. Campers will spend the remainder of the day participating in traditional camp activities at the camp site or pool. Cheerleading (Ages 7-13) Campers will learn cheers, dances, lifts and gymnastic floor skills throughout the week. This camp is designed to introduce campers to the fundamentals of cheerleading including proper technique, routines and the importance of practice and dedication. Campers will also build their confidence by preparing a final performance every Friday to showcase their routines. Ninja (Ages 7-13) In partnership with Niagara Cheerleading, campers will experience a hybrid of parkour, gymnastics and obstacle course training during this camp. Campers will be instructed by trained coaches who will lead them through a series of challenges and obstacles. The Ninja program focuses on building confidence, physical activity and movement education. 8 Leadership Camps Special Needs Integration Day Camp Themes The development of leadership skills provides children and youth with lifelong attributes that contribute to their character development. YMCA campers gain hands-on experience working in collaboration, problem solving, developing creative solutions, and leading others in a fun and supportive environment. Not only do we develop children and youth into role models, the skills they learn at camp can be applied to teams, clubs, school projects, and down the road, their career. Staff asked a lot of questions and were eager to make sure my son had everything he needed and was safe! The staff was warm and friendly, and my son enjoyed his time here. Leaders In Training (Ages 11-14) This two week long camp program is designed to teach youth what it takes to be a leader in our community. They will have a chance to volunteer, participate in exciting team building activities, and build new leadership skills. They will also experience a memorable one night camp sleep-out at Camp Wetaskiwin. During the sleep-out, campers will have fun participating in leadership initiatives, team challenges and a traditional campfire program. My favourite part of camp was the soccer game with the counsellors. Camper 14 YMCA of Niagara Counsellor in Training (Ages 14-15) This three week program is geared towards teens who are looking to gain experience working with children, and want the fun and leadership skill building that camp brings. CITs will have the opportunity to learn how to plan and facilitate camp programs, understand group dynamics, and during the third week volunteer in one of our camps. Participants who complete 35 or more hours of volunteer work during the summer can receive a letter of confirmation from YMCA Day Camps. CITs will participate in a over-night trip planned at YMCA Cedar Glen in Schomberg, Ontario. This trip is designed to foster growth through team challenges and leadership initiatives to allow our participants to develop their skills in a new environment. Assistant Counsellors (Ages 15-16) Join our team and develop your skills! The Assistant Counsellor program is for potential counsellors who are looking to gain experience. You will have the opportunity to lead games, songs, and activities with a group of campers under the mentorship of one of our counsellors. Assistant Counsellors are required to attend pre-camp training in June and commit to 3-4 weeks of camp. This program is available in all camp cities with limited spaces available. Assistant Counsellors will also receive a letter at the end of the summer confirming the amount of volunteer hours spent with YMCA Day Camps. Applications are available at ymcadaycamp.ca. A limited number of spaces and weeks are available for children who require an additional Helping Hand in a smaller ratio. The fee for Helping Hands is $245 per week. Fort Erie Community Living Learning Disabilities Camp SLAM (Ages 6-10) In Port Colborne Wainfleet and Fort Erie, the YMCA partners with Community Living to offer children with intellectual challenges that are supported by the agency additional support in camp. Port Colborne Wainfleet please contact Rita Smith at (905) ext Fort Erie please contact Nikki Boon at (905) ext The Learning Disabilities Association offers a full-day learning camp called S.L.A.M. for children with a suspected learning disability/adhd (diagnosis NOT required). At S.L.A.M., children will spend half the day involved in literacy related games and activities (ex. word hopscotch). The other half of a S.L.A.M day includes social skills and recreational activities (ex. cooperative games, crafts, sports and/or swimming). The instructors at S.L.A.M. are trained to support and guide children with learning difficulties. The adult to child ratio is typically very low with a maximum of 14 children and a minimum of four trained staff at all times. Two instructors will provide academic one-on-one support to each child every day. Each activity is also commonly supported by volunteers. 10 Preparing for Camp How to Register / Payment Methods / Financial Assistance Hours of Operation The camp day operates from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. For your convenience, drop off directly to the camp site begins at 8:00 am and pick up by 5:00 pm for no additional fee. Please note that Day Camp will not be offered on August 6 for the Civic holiday. Extended Care This fun, safe and supervised program is available at the YMCA Health, Fitness & Aquatics branches* for an additional fee. AM: 7:30-8:30 am Cost: $17/week PM: 4:30-6:00 pm Cost: $22/week Daily extended care is available for Discovery camps only at a pro-rated fee. * In Welland extended care is available at Quaker Road Public School. Sign In and Out of Children Identification is required at sign out. s/guardians or other authorized pick-ups will be asked to present valid government issued photo identification. Please bring valid government issued photo identification with you each day to camp. Authorized Pick up If you are unable to pick up your child and would like to add someone to your pick up list, please call your local YMCA Health, Fitness & Aquatics branch. The staff will ask you specific questions to confirm your identity, and pass along the information regarding the individual who is authorized to pick up to camp staff. Please remind authorized pick-ups to bring valid government issued photo identification. Behaviour Management Procedures At Day Camp, we strive to provide a healthy, safe and secure environment for all participants. We are a fully integrated Day Camp that values diversity and the differences that form our camp community. We expect all campers to adhere to our behaviour guidelines. Busing is available in West Niagara, St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and Welland from the extended care location to camp site(s) within that community. Healthy, Nut-Free Lunches Please send your child with a litter-free, healthy and nutfree lunch that will provide them with the nutrition they need to participate in an action packed day. Aquatic Admission Criteria for School Age Camps We are committed to providing a safe and enjoyable aquatic experience. The following age restriction admission criteria for children under 10 years of age are based on Public Health requirements. Children 7 to 10 years of age participating in a YMCA school age camp: if able to successfully demonstrate comfort in the water and complete the facility swim test (2 widths uninterrupted), children may swim independently. If not able to successfully complete the facility swim test, children must be accompanied by an adult/guardian (4:1 ratio) in the water in the shallow end. Swimming For School Age campers, the frequency of recreational swimming may vary based on the week. Most school age camps will have the opportunity to participate in swimming between 3 and 5 times per week. The swim schedule is weather permitting at outdoor pools. In St. Catharines Junior campers that swim at a City of St. Catharines municipal pool will participate in a recreational swim class two times a week. In other cities or at other St. Catharines sites, Junior campers will participate in water games and/or splash pad. For camps that swim at outdoor pools, swim schedules may be adjusted due to weather. NEW! Credit card payments (Visa or MasterCard) are required at the time of registration. If you do not have a credit card, please contact the Day Camp Office to make alternate payment arrangements. Minimum deposit of $25 per 5-day week is required at the time of registration and is non-refundable. For Discovery camps the deposit will be pro-rated. For your convenience the balance of fees may be spread out through pre-authorized credit card payments. All camp fees must be paid by June 30, Registrations received after June 15, 2018 must be paid in full at the time of registration. Registrations will be accepted until the camp is full or 24 hours before the camp is scheduled to begin. Refund/Cancellation Policy All deposits are non-refundable. Requests for refunds made up to two weeks prior to camp will be issued within 14 business days. Refund requests can be made by contacting the YMCA Day Camp office at ymcadaycamp@niagara.ymca.ca. Camp fees are non-refundable within two weeks of camp. Exceptions may be considered for confirmed medical reasons with proper documentation. Refunds will not be given if a camper is sent home for misconduct or if they are ill. Camp fees are tax deductible. A final statement will be made available to each family by the end of February 2019 for income tax purposes.
