CELEBRATING A LIFETIME OF PASSION The Order of the Leaf Lifetime Passion Achievement Award was established in 2004 as we celebrated Camp Airy s 80th birthday. This award honors individuals who demonstrate their Airy passion by embracing the guiding principles of the Order of the Leaf friendship, loyalty and service during and following their active participation on the Camp Airy staff. Tonight, on the 43rd Alumni Reunion Weekend, we honor Rick & Pam Frankle as the 2013 recipients of the Passion Achievement Award. Building Better Campers camp airy - order of the leaf lifetime passion achievement award recipients for 2013: rick & pam frankle So, how did Rick Frankle and wife Pam begin their long association with Camps Airy and Louise, and each other? The story begins after World War II, when Reva Frankle of Norfolk, Virginia was a camper at Louise. Reva went on to a nursing career at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. In 1968, Reva returned to the Camp family, serving as CIT, Rick the new nurse at Airy. And with the new nurse came a new camper her 12-year-old son, Rick. Rick and Reva spent the next 29 summers together at Airy: Reva as nurse, and Rick as a camper, CIT, Counselor, Unit Leader, Swim Department Head, and Assistant Camp Director. Following a five-year full-time hiatus with the Howard County school system 3
lifetime PASSION (Rick s off-season career until that time), he returned to Airy in the fall of 2001 to serve as Director under Executive Director Michael Schneider. Reva and husband Jerry raised Rick and brother Scott in the Northwest Baltimore area, where Rick attended Milford Mill High School. Rick then went on to Western New England College, where he earned his Bachelor s Degree in Education and enjoyed playing ice hockey for the school. Rick was then accepted to George Washington University, where he earned a Master s Degree in Educational Technology Rick (center, row 1), Unit Leader and Counselor. Reva was not only instrumental in bringing Rick to camp, she also introduced him to Pam in Pam, daughter of the late Jack and Ethel Meyer, was raised in Chevy Chase, Maryland, then attended the University of Arizona where she studied nursing. Her first career job was at Sinai Hospital, where she became fast friends with Reva. The inevitable introduction soon followed; Rick and Pam were married less than a year later! Pam is currently a nurse for the Baltimore County school system. Pam s association with the Camp family began as a Louise camper from Since 1985, Pam has been a camp nurse and also provided support in many other areas. She carried and raised both Seth and Hilary during her many years working at camp. Both children became members of the Order of the Leaf in their early teens. Seth, born in 1987, was a camper for eight years, then worked at the Post Office and Canteen before becoming a CIT, Counselor, Assistant Unit Leader, Division Head, Human Seth, Pam, Hilary and Rick Frankle 4
ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Resources Coordinator and Dining Service Coordinator. Following graduation from the University of Maryland, Seth lives in New York City, where his love of the food service industry cultivated at Airy continues in his career. Daughter Hilary, born in 1990, was a camper at Camp Louise from , worked at the Post Office, was a CIT, Counselor, GAN Counselor, and Unit Leader, earning both Circle and Leaf memberships. Having graduated from Gettysburg College, she currently teaches at 2002 Administration Team top left: Mike Schneider, Rick Crane, Rick Frankle, Marty Rochlin, Larry Cantor, Gene Makely, Steve Goldklang Sid & Helen Chernak with Rick & Pam Frankle at a Camp Airy banquet. Kenwood High School in Baltimore County. Jerry Frankle was a frequent visitor to Camp, and passed away in Jerry is survived by Reva, who is with us tonight celebrating her family s long service and love for camp. Thank you Reva; may God bless you and your family. Thus, you have the short story version of Reva, Rick, Pam, Seth and Hilary s unbelievable love, service and dedication to Camp. We all thank you for your passion to Camp Airy and we award you with this distinguished Camp Airy Order of the Leaf Lifetime Passion Achievement Award. Congratulations! We look forward to many more years of Passion and Service from the Frankle Family, where being at Camp Airy is best served by Building Better Campers. Written by Stan Mazer 5
Our beloved Phil and Mitzi Band were so much a part of the Airy & Louise family for over 65 years. It s impossible to remember a time when their influence was not felt. Their story began when they met in 1946 at a Camp Louise function. Phil, a native Washingtonian, immediately asked New Yorker Mitzi for a date, but she refused because her good friend had already expressed interest. Naturally, Phil persevered and Mitzi finally consented to meet for tea. They maintained a longdistance relationship for two years, then both snuck out of camp one night. Phil gave Mitzi his fraternity pin and when she got back to camp, she woke up all 80 of her closest friends to share the news! She had to hide the pin under her clothes so that Miss Ida would not find out about her adventure. Mitzi was finally able to announce her good news shortly thereafter. IN MEMORIAM Phil & Mitzi Band Mitzi & Phil Band They were subsequently married in 1949 and began raising their treasured children: David, Steven and Lisa. The children were immediately immersed in Camp Airy life. Lisa was nine months old her first summer at camp. From 1938 to 2010, Phil Band was a camper, counselor, editor of the Camp Airy newsletter and physician. During that time, Mitzi was a counselor and Director of Athletics at Camp Louise. During Phil s summers as Airy doctor, Mitzi was a fixture on the Health Center porch, always willing to help whenever needed. We were so fortunate to have Phil and Mitzi for so long, supporting camp in every way: financially, physically and spiritually. They were truly an asset to both Camps Airy and Louise. Their memories will be enshrined in our hearts with love and kindness forever. James Richter, a legendary and beloved Airy counselor and staff member from the 1950s and 1960s era, passed away on June 22, Jimmy as he was known at camp, was coaxed to come to Airy by Sam Woal, his Philadelphia high school teacher and guidance counselor, who was the director of the downhill senior camp and also a charter member of the Order of the Leaf. He made Jimmy one of the youngest ever to serve as a counselor. His Airy years were interrupted when Jimmy performed several summers with the U.S. Army Band at West Point playing the French horn. While Jimmy was an accomplished high school swimmer, he elected to serve on Airy s dramatics staff and over the years directed and performed in a number of musicals and political satires. Jimmy later served as the coordinator for the senior camp before the bunks Jimmy Richter Jimmy Richter performing at an Airy show, were moved uphill. Known and revered as a conversationalist, Jimmy regaled us with stories and imitations. His enthusiasm was reflected near the end of each story with now here s the funny bit. His love for Airy was expressed when he convinced, Jane, also a French horn musician and classmate at Temple University, to join the Camp Louise staff for the seasons. They would later marry and perform together with the Trenton Symphony and the Delaware Valley Philharmonic Orchestra. Jimmy also was the band director at several high schools during his 40 year teaching career. Jimmy is survived by Jane, three sons and six grandchildren. We will cherish his memory by our continuing love for Camp Airy. 6

CAMP AIRY ORDER OF THE LEAF FIRST ANNUAL ROAST PRESENTATION DR. STEPHEN J. THOMPSON, ROASTEE SEPTEMBER 21, 2013, 8:00 PM CAMP AIRY UPHILL SOCIAL HALL PORCH
Master of Ceremonies: Steve Goldklang Roasters Bob Mouse Silverman Jordan Frank Sybil Modispacher Eric Tublin Paul Ashcroft Marty Rice Ira Thompson DR. STEVE'S CAMP AIRY HISTORY GOES BACK TO 1971, HIS FIRST SUMMER AT Camp. Some might say his Airy connection began many years prior, when his mother, aunt and uncle attended Camps Airy & Louise, arriving by train from Baltimore. In 1971, Dr. Steve came to Camp Airy for 2 weeks, schlepped (by car) from New Jersey with his camp trunk as he recalls. and fondly remembers standing with Ed Cohen in the Office and calling home, arranging to stay for a total of 6 weeks tha year. He was 9 years old at the time. Dr. Steve was a Camper the following years: 1971 (Bunk 30), 1972 (Bunk 25), 1973 (Bunk 21, where he met Mike Schneider, who taught him archery and became a life-long friend and surrogate older brother), 1974 (Bunk 16), 1977 (Bunk 4), and 1978 (Bunk 1). Dr. Steve was a CIT in 1978, when his Counselors were Robert "Mouse Silverman and Bob Greenberg. Due to some staffing
changes that year, Dr. Steve was promoted to being a Counselor for the final 2 weeks of his CIT Summer. Dr. Steve was a Counselor in Bunk 30 in 1979 and In 1980 his co-counselor was Michael Hecker, with whom Dr. Steve has remained friends, and whose wife has worked with Dr. Steve as an Airy Health Center Nurse for several years, and whose boys have attended Airy as well. Dr. Steve attended Camp with his brother Michael (of blessed memory) and with many cousins, too. He remembers many of his favorite Camp Airy activities: archery, hikes (especially along the railroad tracks, collecting spikes, eating wild raspberries, and ending up at High's in Thurmont for an ice cream treat, or going to the swimming hole), arts and crafts (especially doing copper enamel and making lanyards out of gimp), working the spotlight for West Side Story perched on a platform hanging from the rafters in the Downhill Social Hall (the platform is still there today, but Dr. Steve doesn't think it would support his more mature weight despite how sturdily built he and the tech guys thought it was back then), swimming, softball, dodgeball, and of course being a Counselor in Unit A with Mike Schneider as his Unit Leader. He recalls movies on the Uphill Social Hall surrounded by his Campers. He remembers Friday night Shabbat dinners and the songs, and Saturday morning services at the old uphill campfire site. And, of course, walking THE HILL. As a Counselor he enjoyed nights and days off, many spent on brief road-trips with his BUNAC friends, and then and now Dr. Steve has been a huge fan of The Ott House Pub.
Dr. Steve went on to pursue his college and medical school degrees, leaving Airy after his Leaf summer in He returned in 2003, with his son Ira attending for his own first summer in Bunk 26. Dr. Steve had told Ira that Airy would be wonderful, but it was for Ira to decide for himself. Ira stayed for 4 weeks that year, and was hooked just as his dad had been. Dr. Steve worked as a Camp Doc that year, under the leadership of Ira Tublin (who was himself one of the Camp Docs when Dr. Steve was a Camper). Dr. Steve has been a Camp Doc at Airy since 2003, and in 2005 he received The Myer H. Stolar Award for his work in the Camp Airy Health Center. Dr. Steve and Ira have been at Airy together every year since Each year Dr. Steve added more and more time, now spending more than 4 weeks at Camp each summer. When not at Camp, he is the Chief or Pediatric Neurology and Director of the Pediatric Neuro- Oncology Program at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey. Prior to that, he worked at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Steve will gladly and proudly tell anyone who will listen about how he simply loves this place and the people, and that spending nearly all of his vacation time at Camp is time well spent. In 2006, Dr. Steve became the Medical Director for Camp Airy, and now performs the role for Camp Louise as well. In 2011 Ira was on staff for the first time, and thus made Leaf this past Summer in Dr. Steve hopes to be a fixture at Camp Airy for many years to come.
