2016 Japan Home Stay By Kailee Stinnett Harney County
When I First Got To Japan When I first got to Japan, we all stayed at a hotel and had an orientation to tell us about what was going to happen when our host families came. The next day we got up and we were separated into groups. The people who had to go to a farther place and had to ride a train or bus or even a plane to their host family and the kids who were getting picked up. We got to talk for awhile before any of the host families started coming. When all the families came all the exchange students had to go up and tell the families what our name was and where we were from in Japanese. It was hard. Then we got to go to our host families. They talked more and we got to go to our month long home. When we got to my host families house I taught my host mother and host sister how to play spoons, which is a card game and we played memory. After that we sat on the couch and I fell asleep with my host sister Manaka. Once I woke up we had to go to a Labo party. We stayed there for awhile. I got to talk about my family and show pictures of them.
Going to School in Japan Going to school in Japan was interesting because they wear slippers or special shoes in the school. The only time that I went to the school was for Band Club which my host sister Manaka went to. It was fun listening to their song that they were practicing for a big concert. While Manaka was practicing sometimes I would help her English teacher teach some kids English. It was kind of fun. I even got to see a skit Manaka and the other older kids put on for them moving on to high school.
Shopping In Japan, since there are so many people, they have a lot of stores even in a small town. I went to a few stores and I got presents almost every time that I went there. One of the stores was a mall and we went to a Pokémon center. I got a few presents and a few things for myself. Another one had an arcade in it. Manaka and I played there and we took pictures in the photo booth. We had a lot of fun!
Labo Camp While I was staying in Japan I went to Labo camp. It took about 6 hours to get there. We went to our cabin that we were going to be staying in. There were 30 other people staying in the cabin, mostly boys. There was an upstairs and a downstairs. The boys slept upstairs and the girls downstairs. In the cabin there was another American whose name was Mike. He and I talked a lot because we were the only Americans near our cabin. The two other Americans were in a cabin across the camp. We went on a high ropes course for one of the activities and that was fun. We also got to paint the kid s faces, set up a booth and sell American things such as candy, nonpermanent tattoos and buttons that said 4-H on them.
Tokyo Disney While I was in Japan I got to go to Tokyo Disney Sea. Manaka and I went with a few kids from her Labo family. One of the kids had an American exchange student too but he came by himself not with the 4-H program. I got to talk to him a lot. His name was Ben. We went on many rides and had fun walking around. There was a lot of tourists there enjoying the rides like we were even though it took about 2 hours to get through some of the lines. Some of the kids went home earlier then we did. Manaka, 3 other people and I stayed until the park closed. We had to ride the train back home. My host mother picked us up and we went back to our house.
Making American Food for My Host Family While I was in Japan I made my host family 4 kinds of food. I made macaroni and cheese, apple pie, rice crispy treats, and cherry flavored cake. My host family liked them all and complimented me on everything. They really liked the rice crispy treats that I made. My host brother came into the room that I was in and said that he really liked it, which made me happy that they enjoyed what I had made.
Mock Old Time Japanese Village One of the places that we went to in Japan was a mock Old Time Japanese Village. It took us awhile to get there but once we did it was fun. We got to paint wind chimes and catch gold fish. In the gold fish game, you got to keep the fish that you caught. I was good at it so we got a lot of fish. My host family didn t have any pets so we had to go and get supplies for the fish. We also got to do a traditional tea ceremony and drink the green tea that they had. I didn t like the tea because it tasted too much like fish.
Japanese Sea World While I was in Japan I went to a Japanese Sea World. We got to see penguins, dolphins, sea turtles, orcas, beluga whales, squid, different kinds of fish, and Japanese spider crabs. We got to see an orca show, a seal show, and a dolphin show. We had a lot of fun walking around and seeing the animals.
My Last Day With My Host Family On the last day with my host family Manaka and I went to the mall with the arcade. We played a bunch of games. In one of the crane games I won a giant hamster stuffed animal, but that was all that I won. After that we went home and played games.
Saying Goodbye The day that I had to leave my host family, I had mixed feelings. I was excited to be able to go home but yet I didn t want to leave my Japanese family. I had made new friends and I had a lot of fun in Japan. I also wanted to see my friends that I missed at home. It took us about 2 hours to get to the hotel that I would be staying at for the rest of the day and night with the other exchange students. We had to wait for a bit. They talked to us and some people told about what they did in Japan. Then it was time to say goodbye to our host families. I cried because I really enjoyed my stay in Japan and Manaka cried. There was a lot of crying going on. After awhile they had to leave. After the host families left they told us about what was going to happen for the rest of the day. We also got assigned rooms that we had to share with at least one other person from the exchange program. After that we got to go to a few different places. We were separated into groups to do this. In my group, we went to a Cat Café which was really fun because we all liked cats. Then we went back to the hotel and went to bed.

Leaving Japan Flights When we left the hotel it took us about 1 hour to get to the airport. Once we were there we checked in our luggage. We went to check ourselves in and get to an area that was close to where we would get on the plane. Once we got on the plane it was an 8 and a half hour flight. After we got to Seattle another girl and I had to go to a different area because we had a flight to Portland and then one to Redmond where we would be picked up by our families. Both of the flights were about minutes long. I don t know the exact timing because on both of the flights I fell asleep even before the plane left the runway. We had no trouble with any of the flights.
Coming Home When we got off of the Redmond flight we were really excited. We hadn t seen our families in a month and we missed them a lot. We were almost running and jumping for joy. When we saw our families, I was so excited that I ran to my parents and I cried a bit. I was really tired because I basically had only slept a few hours in 2 days.
