Dear Girl Scout Family, From her first hike to rolling out her sleeping bag under a starry sky, Girl Scouts and the outdoors go together like graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate. You and your Girl Scout may be just beginning to explore all that Girl Scouts of Orange County (GSOC) has to offer-or maybe you re an expert on all things GSOC Outdoors. Our outdoor programs provide all girls with life-changing opportunities to unplug, experience adventure, learn new skills, build confidence, and make lifelong memories and friendships. Whether she s getting her feet wet with our Volunteer-led Day Camps or is excited to spend a few days or a week or more away from home at our beautiful Camp Scherman in the San Jacinto Mountains, she ll seek challenges, become a resourceful problem solver, work cooperatively, develop a strong sense of self, and have fun! With camp experiences packed full of Girl Scout tradition and extras in everything from art, to outdoor cooking, horseback riding, and STEM, there s an adventure waiting for every girl at camp. She ll find supportive counselors who encourage her to try new things and she ll make friends who cheer her on as she overcomes obstacles. 3 Camp is for Everyone! Girl Scout camp is a special place where every girl can practice independence, make friends, learn new skills, problem solve, and have fun in an all-girl, girl-led environment! Our life-changing camp experiences are open to ALL girls entering 1st 12th grades. THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS Attend as an individual! She doesn't need to attend camp with her troop. Many girls visit camp on their own and make new friends. Grab a buddy, be a pair! Girls can bring a buddy from their troop or a friend who is not yet a Girl Scout. Buddies are placed together according to program session, age, and Girl Scout level. Not yet registered as a Girl Scout? Not a problem! Day Camp At our Volunteer-led Day Camps, girls learn new skills, connect with older Girl Scout mentors, and explore and connect with new friends outdoors. Day camp is typically held Monday through Friday. Learn more about day camps on pages 4-5. Family Camp Experience why camp life is the best life at our annual weekend Family Camp! Whether you choose to camp, RV, or stay in one of our cabins, you'll join the fun as and your Girl Scout participate in traditional camp activities, explore the outdoors, and even learn a few camp songs! Summer Camp At Summer Sleepaway Camps, girls make new friends, develop life skills, and experience Girl Scout traditions in the outdoors with the support of trained and caring staff. There's a camp session for every interest - from art, to STEM, to horseback riding. Summer camp runs Monday morning through Friday afternoon. Turn to pages for more information. Weekend Camp Our Weekend Camp program is more exciting than ever with themed camp experiences to fit everyone's schedules and interests. Troops, service units, and parents can select from a variety of weekend camp sessions that also include traditional Girl Scout camp activities, like archery, canoeing, hiking, and more. 4 HER ADVENTURE BEGINS HERE OUTDOOR PROGRESSION Outdoor progression is important to us. It s the opportunity for girls to build skills over time through new and increasingly challenging experiences. The camp setting provides the perfect environment for girls to try new things and develop skills in a safe and supportive environment. A girl who attends camp over multiple years has the opportunity to advance each year in an activity she loves, while continuing to have unique experiences each summer. Below are programs focused on the progression of skills over time, as well as experiences girls can look forward to in the future. Day Camp & Other Outdoor Events Volunteer-led Day Camps are held in the summer and provide a great local introduction to the outdoors for first-time campers. Day Camps also offer seasoned campers opportunities to practice their leadership skills as counselors or activity hosts. Weekend Camp & Family Camp Weekend Camp provides troops and parents with the opportunity to experience overnight camp and be part of the camp community. Campers will spend the weekend making new friends, learning new skills, and going on outdoor adventures. Summer Sleepaway Camp Summer Camp is an enriching outdoor experience for Girl Scouts in grades Campers experience independence as they explore the world around them, challenge themselves to try something new, and build self-confidence while making new friends. Campers are also be able to complete steps towards earning their favorite outdoor badges! Camp Leadership High school-aged Girl Scouts who are experienced campers are invited to become a C.I.T. I/II (Counselor in Training) at Camp Scherman and a Day Camp volunteer or other outdoor adventure leader! Every Girl Benefits from camp From Day Camp and Summer Camp to troop field trips and weekend getaways, enriching outdoor experiences support her development as a G.I.R.L. (Go-Getter, Innovator, Risk-Taker, Leader). By attending camp, a time-honored Girl Scout tradition, girls: Develop leadership skills through girl-led experiences with supportive staff and volunteers by their side. Discover a sense of self by participating in activities that build confidence. Overcome obstacles by challenging themselves to try activities they've never done. Erin Johnson (a.k.a. Maverick) is our Camp Director now, but she started out as an camper herself, right here in Orange County! Cultivate life skills by interacting with fellow campers and exploring the outdoors. 6 VOLUNTEER-LED DAY CAMPS GET MOVING AND GET OUTDOORS! Our Volunteer-Led Day Camps are offered from late June through early August and provide girls with enriching local outdoor experiences. The adventures she has at Day Camp will add to the amazing Girl Scout experiences she will have over her lifetime. FRIENDS Girls make new friends, create lifelong memories, develop healthy relationships, and learn how to practice cooperation and team building. FUN Day Camp activities and themes vary year to year. There's always plenty of fun in store. Past day camps have included: Competing in obstacle courses Learning how to pitch a tent and setup a safe campsite Cooking outdoors with a Dutch Oven and Buddy Burner Participating in community service projects Making and exchanging SWAPs with fellow campers Building volcanoes and watching them erupt Attending a STEM panel with female engineers Swimming, singing, hiking, and more! BADGES Girls will have the opportunity to work on and earn their favorite (and NEW!) outdoor badges! Local Day Camps provide leadership experiences for older girls who serve as mentors as they help plan and run camps in partnership with adult Girl Scout volunteers. Girl Scouts who fill Day Camp leadership roles collaborate with volunteers, campers, and community members to plan and execute camp themes and events, gaining valuable life skills that have a lasting impact on themselves and hundreds of campers. 8 CAMP SCHERMAN Located just a few hours outside of Orange County in the San Jacinto Mountains, Camp Scherman has been a special place for Orange County s Girl Scouts for over 50 years. Under the soaring Jeffrey Pines (that smell like butterscotch!), girls take on new challenges, learn to collaborate with others, become self-reliant, and develop lifelong leadership skills. Whether she s hiking the Cedar Springs Trail, playing games in the pool with friends, kayaking across Promise Lake, or participating in Camp Scherman s many timeless traditions, there are endless possibilities for her to connect with nature and discover her greatness. WEEKEND CAMP Get away with your Girl Scout for a weekend of adventure! Whether she attends with her troop or you join her on a special parent-and-me getaway, she ll have fun and develop new skills. All campers can try their hand at favorite camp activities, including archery, canoeing, hiking, swimming, and ropes courses, all led by trained camp staff. Weekend campers must be accompanied by troop leaders and/or a parent for the entire weekend to meet required adult:girl ratios.* Weekend participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from camp. *Adult:girl ratios vary by level and can be found on page 20 of Volunteer Essentials on girlscoutsoc.org under Forms & Docs. SUMMER SLEEPAWAY CAMP The adventure begins when she climbs on the bus and travels to camp. With many sessions to choose from, she can explore her artsy side, build her outdoor science skills, horseback ride, cook up a storm, and more. No matter which sessions she chooses, she ll also participate in traditional camp activities, go on adventures with new friends, and make lifelong memories singing cherished songs. Summer campers travel to camp on air conditioned chartered buses, along with Girl Scout Volunteer Chaperones. Buses are driven by experienced mountain drivers. Stay tuned for details on our new High Ropes Course coming in 2019! American Camp Association (ACA) accreditation recognizes that safety is a top priority at Camp Scherman. 9 IS SHE READY FOR CAMP? We know that sending your daughter to camp is a big decision especially when it s her first time away from home. Girls as young as second grade can attend Camp Scherman, which is a great way for them to explore their independence in a safe and supervised environment. She ll problem solve, learn to work with girls her age, and return home excited to share the many new skills she learned. While bringing a friend might help her feel comfortable, if she doesn t, she ll quickly make new friends on her many camp adventures! Weekend camps are a great way for first-time campers to try a bit of everything with a parent or troop leader by her side before she returns for summer sleepaway camp! KEEP IN TOUCH WITH YOUR CAMPER CAMP SCHERMAN While your daughter is having the time of her life at camp, you can see what she s up to and let her know you re thinking about her by: Viewing photos from camp through service*, a secure free online Sending one-way s to her through (fees apply). Your will be printed and delivered daily with the rest of camp mail. Mailing her letters and packages at camp. Leaving letters in the Camp Mailbox at dropoff. We ll deliver them to her throughout camp - no postage required! Hiding notes inside her bag for her to discover at camp. Purchasing a Camp Care Package at our Shop. We ll deliver it to her at camp! She ll have caring counselors encouraging her every step of the way, but an I m so proud of you note from family and friends adds a special touch! *Please note - while we try our best, it is not possible for us to capture photos (or multiple photos) of every girl each day. If you have designated during the registration process that your camper cannot have her photo taken, she will not appear in the daily photos CAMP INFO NIGHTS Have questions? Come to one of our Camp Info Nights! Parents, volunteers, and girls are invited to meet camp staff and get more information about Camp Scherman. 12 MEET THE STAFF Meet the Staff Our camp staff are positive, encouraging role models for girls. They are professionally trained counselors who are energetic, experienced, and know how to make your Girl Scout feel at home and confident in the outdoors. Many of them began as campers at Camp Scherman! We have more than 75 paid and volunteer camp staff members who work to support and lead girls at Camp Scherman, including waterfront, riding, program, health center and kitchen staff. They all are committed to making your daughter's camp experience safe and memorable. Here are just a few of our terrific camp staff! ENSIGN Hometown: Buena Park Camp staff since 2015 MAVERICK Hometown: Garden Grove Camp staff since forever Camp Director since 2013 I ve spent more than 20 years working with children. I now get to come full circle and work at the very camp I attended as a child with an amazing team focused on making a positive difference in girls' lives. VERSUS Hometown: San Diego Camp staff since 2014 Seeing a girl realize that she is capable and can overcome self-imposed limitations is a beautiful thing. Sharing and experiencing this wonderful outdoor space is priceless. Camp names are a rich camp tradition and often reflect a counselor s interests, favorite animal or character, or a childhood nickname. Once you pick your camp name, it stays with you forever! "I love seeing campers try something they never considered doing before --swamping, cooking outside, backpacking/hiking-- and adoring it. Every time I hear a camper say that the scenery looks like it is out of a movie, I know I am in the right place." 14 WEEKEND CAMP Weekend Camp Every adventure at Camp Scherman is girl-led, with girls selecting the activities they want to do. Whether it s her first time at camp on a "Mom and Me" weekend, or she s attending with her troop to complete a Journey, there s something incredible waiting for every girl at camp. ACTIVITIES No matter which weekend you choose, all campers get to try their hand at traditional camp activities like archery, canoeing, and hiking, led by trained camp staff. Weekend campers must be accompanied by troop leaders and/or parents for the entire weekend to meet required adult:girl ratios*. Detailed weekend information sent out 4-6 weeks prior to registered weekend. TRANSPORTATION Weekend campers are responsible for their own transportation to and from camp. ACCOMMODATIONS Weekend campers stay in small cabins with bunk beds in Lower Camp (fully-equipped restrooms are a short walk away!); dormitory-style cabins with bunk beds in the Ranch House area; or tents with their parent or troop leader (see photos right). GIRL SCOUT LEVELS BY GRADE Daisy - Grades K-1 Brownie - Grades 2-3 Junior - Grades 4-5 Cadette - Grades 6-8 Senior - Grades 9-10 Ambassador - Grades BRIDGING WEEKEND Bridging from one level of Girl Scouts to the next is a time-honored tradition for girls and their troops to celebrate all they have accomplished and look forward to adventures that lie ahead. Participate in a special bridging ceremony at camp where you will plan and decorate for your ceremony while enjoying camp activities. And, no celebration would be complete without cake! All Grades, May 31-June 2 Ranch House Cabins, Fee: $155 BROWNIE JOURNEY WEEKEND Journey through camp like only a Brownie can! Paddle around the lake, take aim at archery, explore your creativity at arts and crafts, and complete your day of adventure stargazing with friends. Get a taste of all that Camp Scherman has to offer while completing a Girl Scout Brownie Journey (to be decided closer to weekend date). Journey books and awards will be provided to each girl. 18 SUMMER CAMP Summer Sleepaway Camp At Camp Scherman, girls lead their own adventure. In addition to traditional camp programs available at every camp session, summer campers choose from a variety of specialty activities called Camper Choice. Camper Choice activities can include synchronized swimming, science of food, LARPing (Live Action Role Playing), creating advanced lanyards, lashing, Thai Chi, and so much more! ACTIVITIES With unique themes for every interest, your Girl Scout can explore her artsy side, cook up a storm, test her endurance on the trails, or experiment with STEM. No matter which session she chooses, she ll also have fun participating in traditional camp activities like swimming, canoeing, arts and crafts, and archery. And she ll explore nature as she hikes with friends and makes memories singing songs under a starry night sky. TRANSPORTATION The adventure begins when she climbs on the camp bus in Orange County and meets new friends on the way to camp. 24 REGISTRATION & FEES Camp Registration WHEN TO REGISTER FOR CAMP SCHERMAN Registration for all summer sleepaway camps opens Monday, January 21, Registrations are processed on a firstcome, first-served basis. Weekend camp registration is open year round. HOW TO REGISTER Register online at girlscoutsoc.org/registerforcamp. If you have questions regarding the registration process, please send a message to our Customer Care team at girlscoutsoc.org/contactus. Non-Girl Scout Members: All girls are welcome at camp, regardless of their scouting background. After completing the camp registration process, families of girls who are not already Girl Scouts will be contacted to register as a member and pay the $35 membership fee before they attend camp. All campers will have opportunities to earn Girl Scout badges and recognitions through a variety of fun and meaningful activities. is the main form of camp communication. Please provide an address you actively use. PAYMENTS/DEPOSITS A deposit of $75 made upon registration will hold your camper s summer camp spot. A deposit of $30 made upon registration will reserve your weekend camper's spot. Our online payment system accepts Visa, Mastercard, and Discover. Camp fee balances are due four weeks prior to the start of every camp session. Late payments may result in loss of placement in the camp session and forfeit of the deposit. A medical form and details will be provided in your parent information packet, which will be ed after the deposit for camp has been paid. All forms must be completed with signatures from parents and physicans and brought with the camper to the bus drop off. Health History forms are required for weekend campers attending as a troop and are available at girlscoutsoc.org under Forms & Docs. TRANSPORTATION Taking the bus to summer resident camp is part of the overall camp experience. Girls enjoy riding with their camp friends! Bus drivers are certified and familiar with the route to camp. Campers need to arrive at the drop off and pick-up location at 7:00 a.m. to check in. Buses depart promptly at 8:00 a.m. The bus pick up is located in the city of Orange, close to where the 91 & 55 freeways meet (exact address provided in camper packet upon registration). Campers returning home depart camp promptly at 2 p.m. and should arrive on the specified return date at approximately 4:15 p.m or 4:30 p.m, depending on traffic. An confirmation will be sent to camper parents informing them of the campers safe arrival and when the buses have departed. *Weekend Camp participants must provide their own transportation to and from camp. Summer Camp Bus Chaperones Needed! Chaperones are needed for the bus rides to and from camp! Chaperones must be at least 21 years old and will be provided lunch and a Camp Scherman T-shirt. 25 REGISTRATION & FEES Summer Campers enjoy the fresh air and brush up on their outdoor cooking skills over a propane stove near Camp Scherman's Museum. CAMP FEES Fees for attending Camp Scherman are largely subsidized by Girl Scouts of Orange County to keep life-changing camp experiences accessible to all Girl Scout families. Our tiered pricing program enables families to see the actual per girl cost (Tier 3) to operate Camp Scherman and choose from three pricing tiers. Please choose the fee plan most appropriate for your family s financial circumstances. All girls have the same unforgettable camp experience, regardless of the amount paid. See summer session tiered pricing on page 17. Financial assistance is available for girls who qualify. Visit girlscoutsoc.org/campinfo for more information. DAY CAMP Day Camps are volunteer-led. If a camper returns home early due to homesickness, unacceptable behavior or upon parental request, a refund will not be issued. 26 OUTDOOR ADVENTURES More Outdoor Adventures When girls spend quality time outdoors and increase their exposure to nature, they thrive physically, emotionally, and intellectually. Girl Scout volunteers, many of whom are Girl Scout alum themselves, pour their heart and soul into sharing Girl Scout traditions, providing outdoor experiences by way of skill-building competitions, sailing, canoeing, and flag folding to name a few. At Girl Scouts of Orange County, we are fortunate to have the following volunteer-led outdoor events available to girls.
