3 FLAG ETIQUETTE The fundamental rule of flag etiquette is treat all flags with respect and common sense. It is the universal custom to display the American flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness. The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously. Inside the US and it s territories, the United States flag always is given the place of highest prominence or honor above, and not equal to, the flag of the United Nations of any other national or international flag. State When flags of states, cities, or localities, or pennants of societies are flown on the same flagpole with the US flag, the US flag should always be at the peak. When the flags are flown from adjacent flagpoles, the US flag should be hoisted first and lowered last. No such flag or pennant may be placed above the US flag, or to the right of the US flag. From our experience, it is nearly impossible to answer the question accurately. Avoid flying your flag in the rain. Wind, when combined with water weight, puts undue strain on the fabric and stitching. To extend the life of a flag, when it becomes torn or frayed in should be repaired immediately and should never be flown when wet. Smog and exhaust fumes will dim the colors and shorten the life of the flag. Always be aware of abrasion from rough surfaces as this will cause damage to the materials and stitching.
