Welcome to SUMMER CAMP 2018
Welcome to Chatham Camp 2018! We would like to thank you for enrolling your child(ren) in our Chatham Summer Camp. The camp is at Lafayette Ave. School, 221 Lafayette Ave., Chatham, NJ. We are planning an amazing summer of activities. As a reminder, we go swimming Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in the afternoon. We have theme based field trips on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This year, our teachers will be planning awesome summer clubs for your kids to participate in on pool days (in the AM). These clubs will be lesson planned and include many varied options with the same quality as what we run during the school year. Camp Orientation will be Thursday, June 21 promptly at 5:30 pm in the Lafayette Ave. School cafeteria. Important information and camp T-shirts will be distributed. All camp directors and administrators will be on hand to answer your questions. We hope you can attend. I would like to introduce myself as the Site Coordinator. 8 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SUMMER CAMP I worry about the trips. We have been going on trips for a very long time and we know the places that we go to very well. For example, Dorney Park is one of our first trips every year. Our staff to camper ratio is as low as 1 staff with up to 5 campers for water trips to a maximum of 1 staff to 10 campers for a non- water trip. 2 groups stay together and we use a buddy system for the campers in the groups. Our staff is experienced, carry camper ID cards with emergency information, first aid kits, and cell phones. Most of our staff is CPR and First Aid Certified. All of the children wear tye dye camp T-shirt s for quick identification. All campers can choose to go on rides or stay behind, staff is always with them. Also, from our experience the children are more aware that they are in a group and not with their parents and are very careful to stay with their groups. How are campers grouped on the trips? Campers are grouped by age for most trips. This keeps campers with the same interests and abilities together so all things we participate in are age appropriate. For a few of the trips campers will be grouped by height because of the ride restrictions at some parks. What type of transportation is used on the trips? All of our campers ride in a late model Air Conditioned certified yellow school bus with seatbelts. All buses are driven by experienced certified drivers who operate buses all year long, not just during the summer. All staff rides on the buses with the campers and sit scattered throughout the bus for proper supervision. My child does not swim well and I m worried about the pool? Our counselors are in the water with the campers at all times and lifeguards are also on duty. It is a good idea to relay your camper s swimming ability to the camp director on the first day. Campers have the option of taking the Deep Water test in order to swim in the deep sections (all other sections are below 4 ft). There is a snack bar at the pool, you may send money with your children for this. There is also a sandy play area with some games and a beach in front of the shallow section. What if something happens to my child on a trip? On every trip all of your camper s emergency and medical information (Child ID cards) is taken with us and carried by your camper s group leader. If anything should happen you would be contacted immediately. Our camp director s and most of our staff is CPR and First Aid certified. If we should have a serious emergency, we would call 911 or go to the emergency station at the trip location.
Week 1 Wipe Out - Wednesday June 27th Wear Your Best Surfer Gear! Week 2 Born in the USA, Party in the USA Monday, July 2 Wear Red, White & Blue! Week 3 Mountains to the Sea - Wednesday July 11 Bring in your Favorite Beach toy! Week 4 On the Border - Wednesday July 18 Wear Your Favorite Hat! Week 5 Frontiers Old and New - Wednesday July 25 Dress like a Cowboy or Cowgirl Week 6 icamp - Wednesday August 1 Bring in a picture of your favorite video game Week 7 Sitting on a Dock of the Bay- Wednesday August 8 Bring in a picture or dress like your favorite sea animal
Camp Important Notes: Medication authorization forms & medical plans are required for any chronic medical conditions that require medications to be held at the program (i.e. epipens, inhalers, etc). Medical authorization forms are also required for sunscreen should you wish to have camp staff assist with application. *Please Note: Epi Pens require doctor s action plan paperwork along with WFC medical authorization form* Allergies: We take allergies very seriously, please make sure you inform camp directors of all allergies your child has. We are nut-free at Chatham Summer Camp. No peanuts or peanut containing products will be allowed at camp. We reserve the right to confiscate any such food items that may pose a health risk to other campers at camp. Proper footwear is HIGHLY recommended for our walk to Colony Pool. Please send campers in comfortable walking shoes i.e. sneakers. Should your child wish to wear sandals or flip-flops they may pack them in their backpacks and change once we arrive at the pool. It is advisable that backpacks remain light for easy carrying by campers. Electronic devices such as ipads and cell phones will not be permitted to be used at camp. The camp is not be responsible for any lost belongings including toys and electronic devices. Anything brought to camp will be the responsibility of the camper. Please have your child wear their bathing suit under their clothes on pool days and any water trip days. This will help make the time needed to get ready for departure quicker. Please send in two water bottles with your child daily. Suggestion: freeze 1 of the 2 you send in for the day. Children will need spending money on most of our field trips. Money for the snack bar at the pool is optional. It is the parents discretion on whether they would like their child to manage the money provided OR if they would prefer a staff member to oversee spending for the day. Please let a camp staff member know (at drop off) if you would like a staff member to be in charge of your child s money for that day. All money should be in a labeled plastic baggie.
Heleine Gonzalez Camp Director Hello! My name is Heleine Gonzalez and I have had the pleasure of working with different age groups through my 17 years with WFC. Over the years, I earned a degree from William Paterson University in Elementary Education and I am currently working on my masters. I have had the pleasure of being the Summer Camp director in Chatham for over 14 years. I love to cook with my two children and work on my garden with my husband and kids!
Sandy Benjamin Asst. Director Hi, I'm Ms. Sandy! I have been working as a Site Director with Work-Family Connection for 10 years. I have worked as a Camp Supervisor for 6 years with WFC. Working with kids and families is a great deal of fun. I love to cook, dance, travel, dabble with science experiments and experience world cultures. I just returned from a two-week trip to London and Paris with my daughter Racquel who is also working with us at the camp as a junior counselor. My goal is to make learning fun through discovery in history, language, food, cultures, family heritage and most of all learning about others. Learning about others helps us to embrace our differences and our uniqueness; It helps us to make new friends, meet new people and have new experiences. That's what makes learning and camp a great deal of fun. See you there!
Sara Cole Cooking Club Hi, I m Sara. This is my eighth year with The Work Family Connection. I graduated from Rowan University with a degree in elementary education. I then continued my education at Montclair State University and graduated with a degree in Nutrition and Food Science and obtained my Registered Dietitian credentials. In addition to my time with WFC I have worked in a variety of settings with children including teaching cooking classes. I am passionate about combining my love for teaching, nutrition, and cooking to show both children and adults how healthy eating can be fun and easy. During the school year I run a weekly cooking club at our after school programs at Southern Boulevard School and Milton Avenue School. During this time I teach the students basic cooking skills and the importance of teamwork as we work together to create delicious recipes. I am looking forward to being the cooking instructor at camp this summer continuing my tradition of introducing the campers to new food in exciting ways. Joe Garcia Sports/Gym Club Joseph Garcia has been with Work Family Connection for three years as a teacher for the Roselle Park School District. He currently attends Kean University where he will receive a teacher s certification in Physical Education and Health. He serves as an assistant coach for football, baseball, and basketball youth leagues. Joe also has a dog named Porkchop, who he loves.
Jessica Gullett Art Club Hello! My name is Miss Jess. I started with WFC in 2016 and am currently a Co-Site Director at Patrick McGaheran Elementary. I graduated from Centenary University with a major in Psychology and a minor in Fine Arts. I'm very interested in becoming either an art therapist or an art teacher for elementary aged children. This summer I will be teaching our campers about different fine arts techniques, from watercolor paints to sculpting and collage! Art is the biggest passion in my life and I hope to instill that passion into Joelle Menza Yoga, Creative Arts and Dance Club This summer I am excited to be leading Yoga, Creative Arts and Dance! I am currently a Teacher at Southern Boulevard s K-Wrap Lunch and After-School Program. This past school year, I had the pleasure of teaching five different clubs: Dance, Cheerleading, Yoga, Drama and Character Club. I am a graduate of Montclair State University and received my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Family Science and Human Development. Working with children has always been my career interest and I have worked as a Toddler Teacher, Nanny, Kid s Club Attendant and Camp Counselor. Throughout my educational journey, I volunteered at Children s Specialized Hospital and gained experience within various forms of recreational therapy. I also completed an internship within the Guidance Department of Jonathan Dayton High School and Florence M. Gaudineer Middle School, in the district of Springfield, NJ. In the near future, I plan to attain a Master s Degree in Behavior Analysis and pursue a career as a BCBA.
Isabel Monteiro STEM Club My name is Isabel Monteiro. I was born and educated in Portugal where I received a Medical Doctor degree from the University of Coimbra. After coming to the US, I worked at New York University for 23 years as a Clinical Research Scientist specializing in Alzheimer s disease.
