SECURTY Admission to security areas (shown as dark green on the Area 3 map) is restricted to cleared or escorted persons on official business and requires advance notice and approval. Arrangements should be made with your host s office 4 days in advance of your visit. All visitors must wear avisitor s badge, and uncleared visitors must be escorted while in security areas. People under age 8 are not permitted in Laboratory areas unless they are on an approved tour. TAXS ndependent Taxi Service ( ) provides round.the.clock transportation throughout Los Alamos and White Rock and to Santa Fe and Albuquerque, if desired. Government taxi service ( ) is available free for official Laboratory visitors from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on a limited basis from 4:30 to p.m. Altravel must be approved by the host group. On request, taxis meet Ross flights at the LosAlamos airport and pickup Ross passengers at the Santa Fe or Albuquerque airports when flights to Los A]amos are diverted or canceled. ARLNES Ross Aviation is the only commercial carrier that flies to and from Los Alamos. For flight informs. tion, refer to the Airline Guide or call Ross Aviation, nc., at (505) (Albuquerque) or (Los Alamos). Official visitors should have their host make their reservations. RENTAL CARS AND BUS SERVCE Rental cars are available in Los Alamos, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque. Shuttle bus service (Shuttlejack, , and Greyhound, ) is available from the Albuquerque airport to Santa Fe. Limited bus service from Santa Fe to Los Alamos is offered by Sierra Stage Lines ( ). A nonprofit community transportation system (Los Alamos Bus System, nc.) seines the Laboratory, White Rock, and the LosAlamos townsite. Route infer. mation and schedules are available at the J. ACCOMMODATONS There are three motels in Los Alamos County: Hill Top House ( ), LosAlamos nn ( ), and White Rock Motor Lodge ( ). CAFETERL4 The Laboratory s main cafeteria is [ocated on the top floor of the Otowi Building (TA-3, SM.26). t is open to employees and visitors from 7 a.m. to 3:5 p.m. Dial 7-MENU for the daily menu. There is also hot food service at TA.6,,53, and -55. CLMATE At an elevation of 7,300 feet, LosA]amos enjoys a semi-arid and mountain climate. At this altitude the air is thinner and the sunshine stronger than at sea level. Visitors who are not acclimated to these conditions should take proper precautions. Those new to higher elevations should also realize that one alcoholic drink at this altitude has the effect of two at sea level. The area receives about 8 inches of precipitation yearly. Summer temperatures range from the eighties during the day to the fifties at night; winter temperatures range from the fifties to the teens.
