Mining Park receives big drill Kinross Mining donated a Gardner-Denver Hydra-Trac SCH3500A big drill which had been purchased in October The big drill was used to cut roads to the top of the mountain when it was first on site. It was also used to drill around wells and break large rocks up that didn't fracture during regular blasting. The drill ran when it was parked. The only preparation needed for the relocation to the park was attention to batteries and some antifreeze. Dave Fanning, Interim Director of Public Works gave the approval for the manpower and heavy equipment used. Three volunteers from Nye County Public Works transferred the big rig from Round Mountain to the mining park. Stretch Baker coordinated the move, Dave Manhire was the flat bed driver and Ted Thompson figured out how to get the big drill loaded and moved. On the Kinross Mining end we wish to thank our Park Foundation member, Bill Goodhard and Chris Swanson who helped with the loading. We appreciate their generous support. A snapshot of E Clampus Vitus by Mark Hall- Patton, XNGH, DS-3 E Clampus Vitus is a revival of a gold rush era humorous fraternal group. Today s E Clampus Vitus is a men s historical fraternity, dedicated to merriment and the marking of our historic sites and events. Clampers, as members are known, belong to one of forty chapters throughout the western states, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, and Washington, with outposts in Idaho and Oregon. Members meet at Clampouts, initiating new members, called Poor Blind Candidates, or PBCs, and enjoying a convivial atmosphere of history and humor. No dues are charged, and members attending an event pay the costs of the event. Under the leadership of each chapter s Humbug, the clamper term for president, members erect markers to historic events or sites. In southern Nevada, the clamper chapter is the Queho Posse, Chapter 1919 (each chapter comes up with its own name and number), which honors the incompetent posses that chased the renegade Indian Queho during the first three decades of the twentieth century in the Eldorado Canyon area of Clark County. In July a plaque will be dedicated at the Tonopah Historic Mining Park. It will be placed by a group within E Clampus Vitus called the Transierra Roiterous Alliance of Senior Humbugs, or TRASH. This group is open to Humbugs and X-Humbugs of all the chapters, and meets yearly for an historical trip to various locations in the west. Stay Out Stay Alive When you arrive at the visitor's center at the Park, you will want to watch an informative and entertaining video in the Jim Butler Theater. First you will learn the importance of the "Stay Out- Stay Alive" program sponsored by the Nevada Division of Minerals, not only here at the Park but through out Nevada at mine sites. Then the video will take you back into the time of the discovery of the big strike in Tonopah by Jim Butler and set the stage for you before you depart on one or more of the tours that are offered at the Park. Thanks to the Nevada Division of Minerals, much of the access in the Park has been made available by funds for fencing through this program. When the fencing project is completed it will open up 100% of the Park for your enjoyment and exploration. Tailings Volume 7-1 Page 2 Spring 2009

Spooks and Ghouls invade the mining park on Halloween 2008 Spooktacular was a huge success with over 200 kids and their parents attending. Once again 4-Our Kids the was reason. Buildings were turned into haunted houses, and a human butcher shop. All attendees were both frightened and amazed. At Visitor s Center guest enjoyed chili, nachos, and the hot apple cider that warmed all on hallows eve. Don t miss Frankenstein s Lab and the haunted graveyard as our annual Spooktacular takes place in the Tonopah Historic Mining Park. Rainbow Girls Visit the Park The Nevada State International Order of the Rainbow for Girls Celebrated their 19 th Annual Tonopah Rainbow Camp by touring the Tonopah Historic Mining Park. Although they call it "camp," they all stay in hotel rooms in Tonopah. Heather Ingalls, and Dave Tobey, mining park tour guides and gift shop attendants gave three tours to a total of one hundred and twenty four Rainbow Girls and their adult chaperones on Saturday, March 14 th. Tours started in the main exhibit building where the groups watched the history of the mining park video and then went on a guided tour of the property. Rainbow Girls is a world wide service organization for girls ages eleven to twenty. Rainbow provides an environment where girls gain self-confidence and self-respect. Rainbow teaches leadership skills, service to the community, and respect for all. Each year, the girls choose a statewide service project. Assemblies help the Grand Worthy Advisor by providing service hours or raising money for her chosen project. The service project was the Alzheimer's Association. Nevada Rainbow Girls provided hours of service for this cause. At minimum wage of $6.30/hour, this equates to about $3, in time. In addition, girls and adults formed walk teams and gathered donations for the Alzheimer's Association. A total of $3,390 was raised from events in Reno, Carson City and Las Vegas. Through coordination of additional fundraising efforts this brought their total donations to a value of $11, Tailings Volume 7-1 Page 3 Spring 2009

Bob Beers, Treasurer, is a multi-faceted businessman with a Certified Public Accountant license. After years of small business ownership, Bob was elected to the legislature. He served as an Assemblyman and was later elected to the Nevada State Senate. A member of the National Mining History Association, Bob is fascinated by the idea of putting sweat into a hole in the ground and producing money. He is a partner at Moore & Associates, a Las Vegas CPA firm specializing in small business financial management. Bob has been an active volunteer, serving as president of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce Business Expo and as treasurer of the Nevada Republican Party. Bill Wahl has been a member of the Tonopah Historic Mining Park Foundation Meet Your Foundation Board Members Board since His special interest in the park deals with the restoration or stabilization of the remaining structures. He recently received his 50th year golden engraved silver diploma as an Engineer of Mines from the Colorado School of Mines. Back in 1958, he was trained to be a manager of 200 to 400 ton a day underground hard rock metal mines. Within five years, those kind of mining operations were history. Bill s interest in hard rock mining has never wavered. He recently has acquired a major part of the town site of Tybo, Nevada and is arresting the collapse of the Trowbridge Store. His day job for the last thirty plus years is owner and operator of a limestone quarry in California and for the last ten years, a clay mine in Nevada. Both operations are year round, with just under fifty employees. Best investment of all, on a personal basis, is still Tybo! Michael Dunk Dunkerley, a resident of Tonopah, has been an active volunteer and benefactor at the mining park for several years. Recently, he has built life size mining displays and has worked on the bike and hike loop trail throughout the mining park. Dunk repairs diorama exhibits and creates miniature mining park replicas. Dunk aided in the purchase of a six seat Polaris Crew Vehicle which provides ADA access to the park. Dunk has a duel degree in Management and Administration and a minor in Earth Sciences. As a teenager he worked in collections and exhibits for the San Bernardino County Museum. He was a major contributor and renovation volunteer at the Kern County Museum in Randsburg, California. As a new member and a jack of all trades on many facets of museum work Dunk is a great addition to our Tonopah Historic Mining Park Foundation board. Mimi Rodden, a native Nevadan, comes from a pioneer ranching family and has been interested in history all her life. She was a tireless volunteer for the Carson City Mint, now the Nevada State Museum and was instrumental in starting the first state Docent Program. Mimi spearheaded raising $100, for the purchase of the Garcia saddle, the start of our world class western exhibit. She single handedly raised the money needed to illuminate the exterior of the old mint building and helped to reopen the structure when the state closed it for seismic problems. She lobbied Tailings Volume 7-1 Page 4 Spring 2009

Meet Your Foundation Board Members the legislature and helped the state secure a seismic specialist capable of doing the work. The project employed new technology, came in under budget and ahead of time. Mimi also served on the Nevada State Museum Board. She was the first active State Historic Preservation Officer or SHPO with responsibilities for the administration, implementation and coordination of programs at federal, state and local levels. Mimi supervised the National Register Program and awarded appropriate grants. As a part of the multilevel study, Mimi served as Cultural Resource Coordinator for the proposed MX project in Nevada. She served as Coordinator to the Bureau of Land Management for five-state prehistoric-historiccultural resource exhibit, A Great Basin Tribute, a component of Bureau of Land Management Adventures in the Past program and was a facilitator to the Nevada Mining Association to improve the relationship between the Nevada Mining Association and local, state and federal agencies. Appointed by President Reagan, she was an expert member of the President s Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. A published author of Boulder City, Nevada and numerous technical papers, she was the principal of her own historic preservation consulting firm, Mimi Rodden Preservation Consultant (MRPC) from 1980 to Mimi has worked on the development of numerous projects across the state of Nevada and California. She was the Facilitator for the development of the Tonopah Historic Mining Park. This project established an interpretive park/museum dealing with the history of mining. Mimi raised just over a million dollars in grants for park development. These funds included grants, bequests, inkind services and the donation of mining memorabilia, including one of the largest private mineral collections in the United States. The Tonopah Historic Mining Park was voted the best rural park in Nevada. Bill Goodhard currently works for Round Mountain Gold Corporation (Kinross/Barrick) as Vice President, General Manager. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Geological Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado. Bill started his career doing geophysics and exploration for an exploration company in Denver. When the opportunity presented itself he went on the Sunnyside Mine in Southwest Colorado as a mine geologist. Bill stayed with the Sunnyside Mine for twenty years and progressed through technical services and operations then spent his last eight years there as Manager. Bill managed the end of the mine life and then permitted and implemented the closure of the operation. From there Bill spent two years at the AJ Mine in Juneau, Alaska as Project Manager then moved on the reclamation and environmental affairs for Echo Bay Mines until the merger with Kinross Gold Corporation. After the merger Bill worked for two years as Manager then Vice President of the Reclamation Unit for Kinross. In 2006 he came to Round Mountain in his current position. Bill is a member of the SME, North West Mining Association, Colorado Mining Association, and is Chairman elect for the Nevada Mining Association. He is the recipient of the Cooperative Conservation Award for his work with Animas River Stakeholders Group at the Sunnyside Mine given by the Department of the Interior. Jim Marsh, long time Las Vegan, is an ad vocational historian. He is known as a collector of Western Americana Memorabilia. Jim is a business man who runs a large car dealership as well as several other companies. He is recognized as the organizer and promoter of several historic trips around the state. His back country tours of Goldfield and Tonopah, as well as many other mining communities and ghost towns are well attended. He is a supporter of Republican principals and quietly active in the politics of Nevada. Tailings Volume 7-1 Page 5 Spring 2009

Park Improvements After almost two years of effort and planning the Tonopah Historic Mining Park is open for even more fun. Covering almost one hundred thirteen acres the idea was to create a safer park for visitor s use. You can now explore almost two miles of trails and roads on the grounds that were previously closed due to safety issues by using a new trail system. The new trail systems also opens improved routes to the existing mines and opens up hiking and mountain bike opportunities. The Visitor s Center and store is refurbished with more displays, artifacts, books and gifts. The parking lot has been expanded with new rock walls completed in cooperation with the City of Tonopah, our Conservation Camp Crews and our own park employees. A special thanks to Carl Harris Fencing and to James Eason, Town Manager, for their hundreds of hours of dedication. This was made possible by a generous grant from the Nevada Department of Minerals under their Abandoned Mines Safety Program. Now is the time to plan that trip, bring your mountain bike, hiking boots and running shoes and spend a day at the mining park. A personal guided tour for up to five people can be reserved at the Visitor s Center. The new Polaris Crew that seats six can provide a true off road adventure for those with limited mobility. For them the ride is without charge. It is an on going project within the boundaries of the park to offer an even wider array of experiences. For additional information call the Visitor s Center at (775) Signage Project Under Way Five descriptive signs are completed and mounted at the mining park. They help tell the story of the Tonopah Boom and the impact of the riches found in the surrounding area. The Foundation is excited and happy to report that five more signs are being fabricated at this time. They will be placed at strategic spots around the park site. Gold Creek Productions worked with the Tonopah Historic Mining Park Foundation on this exciting addition to the park. Tailings Volume 7-1 Page 7 Spring 2009
