1 987 \ ATV/BC NEWSLETTER Issue 25 1 ATV/BC NEWSLETTER February 2015 Volume 4. Issue 25 Mount Baldy (Clearwater, B.C.) October 2014 Q.S.S.C. Ride Editors notes: Well I thought winter was over but I guess Im just hopeful as the snow has been falling for the last 7 hours. Lots of new things are starting to show up, New Machines & Products from the manufactures. I was in one of the shops the other day and saw a small jump starter using a lithium ion battery as a power source. I could have used that product when my battery died at the top of the mountain during the GPS poker ride at Three Valley Gap. So If you are starting to get the winter blues why not checkout the Sportsman show on March 6 th, 7 th & 8 th at the Tradex in Abbotsford. While at the show stop in at the ATV/BC booth and say hi to everyone. Again this year we are offering two scholarships (1 male & 1 female) to grade 12 students furthering their education. At the end of the newsletter you will find the application form. These scholarships are available to ATV/BC members and their immediate family, so if you know of someone please pass it on. 4 987 ATV/BC NEWSLETTER Issue 25 4 PRESIDENTS BLOG by Jeff Mohr The New Year has started and all the pieces are coming together, the ATVBC Poker Ride is set for Clearwater, the Jamboree and ATVBC AGM will be held in Greenwood and I see that several clubs are planning their events. To the Clubs, please send the date(s) and particulars of your event(s) to Elly at atvbc@atvbc.ca and Allen at Allen@atvbc.ca and they will be posted on the events calendar and provincial map. To have the information posted on ATVBCs Facebook page send the info and dates to Jay at ironman0731@hotmail.com. The more events people know about the more opportunities they have to get out and enjoy our sport and discover all the diverse riding opportunities we have in BC. Registration and licensing of OHVs is now available from your ICBC Broker and it is voluntary until June 01, 2015 when it will become mandatory. So far I have heard of some brokers that are very knowledgeable and informative and others that are still trying to understand and learn so if you have any questions please talk with other club members, any ATVBC Director (contact info for each on the ATVBC website ) or post your question on the ATVBC web site forum with the heading Off Road Vehicle Legislation. I will be monitoring the site and get the answers. The first round of the NTC Grants has been approved and the various recipients are discussing the next steps to get the cash to move forward on their projects. A well done to all those that submitted projects as we understand how much work had to be done before the shovel even hits the dirt. The grants total approximately $200,000 for the ATV Clubs and this combined with the local funding and work with other Organizations will probably put more than a half million dollars into trails, signage and infrastructure. Lets make this the safest year ever Jeff ATV/BC FACE-TO-FACE The board of directors for ATV/BC will be having a face to face meeting in Williams Lake on April 18 th 2015 the meeting will held at the Pioneer House. There will be three speakers: The Rec officer from Williams Lake, Terry Wardrop / Land and Environment Coordinator and someone will be talking about R&L. (we are hoping for someone from the Government). We have gotten a special rate from the Ramada Hotel in Williams Lake, so if you would like to stay there, just mention you are attending the ATV/BC face to face and you will get this rate. So hope to see everyone there. (More details will be posted in the next newsletter and on ATVBCs website soon) Ralph Matthews

5 ATV/BC NEWSLETTER Issue 25 5 Times have really changed for ATVBC. QUAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION OF BRITISH COLUMBIA LAND AND ENVIROMENT National Trails Coalition 2014 Program February 2, 2015 In 2009 the National Trails Coalition partnered with the Federal Government in a $25 million Dollar program to build trails in Canada. British Columbia got 3 million dollars and of that 1 million was to be shared between BCORMA and ATVBC to establish or enhance trail. Well we really tried but only 3 projects were proposed by ATVBC of which only 1 was proposed by a club. That year the total value of all projects including in kind was $146,116 of which $45316 was provided by NTC. BC didnt lose the money as BCORMA was better organized and they got to spend the other $ 950,000 of NTC Funding which when combined with their matching dollars meant they got $1,900,000 worth of trails built. The big difference was their clubs wanted the trail and they worked for and got them. Now in 2014 it is a different story but in a lot smaller program. This years program was only $10 million and BC got 1.2 of that. In turn summer motorized (ATVBC and BCORMA) got $400,000 which was split evenly. This time we had a total of 13 projects submitted for a total value including in kind of $1,252,574 which would have required a contribution of $376,362 from NTC or the Federal program. I had my work cut out as I had to get the total contribution from NTC down to just $200,000. This exercise required a lot of stick handing but the outcome was the approval of 10 individual projects and 2 joint projects with the snowmobile sector with a total combined value including in kind of $578,016. What is really great is that to get this federal money the clubs were able to obtain contributions of $112,000 from the Provincial Government and another $169,785 from other sources like private companies and civic government. In addition we have submitted 3 more projects from clubs under round 2 but are awaiting work. We will keep you posted. A great Job and this is what makes it worthwhile to see this kind of growth On Page 6 is the ATVBC NTC Project Master List from 2014, for your perusal. T. J. 7 ATV/BC NEWSLETTER Issue 25 7 A STEWARDSHIP IN TERRACE You never know what you will stumble across when you go out riding. A weekend ride turned into a steward ship between Terrace ATV & SxS Society and The Natures Trust. We all (Myself, Brian, Dave, Robin, Carissa, and Les) decided on one of our Sunday rides. We were going to check out a trail I had recently been down in Terraces Thunderbird area. The ride there and the trail had a little bit of everything including forestry roads, power line right of ways, mud, some of off camber areas, and nice trail ride area. During the ride out there we came across a few muddy areas that the locals like to play in. Some of us have never seen the other side on the first try or at least not without the help of a winch. We made the ride through the trail to the connecting forestry road. Although its not a long trail maybe 20km tops its still fun. After a short break we decided to continue on down the road and see what else we could find. We proceeded down the road about a km when Dave hit the brakes and turned around. He had spotted another trail. Strange Im pretty sure last month that trail was not their when I had been in that area. We proceeded in, within about 60 feet we came across an old deactivated bridge. There were plenty of signs that someone had made a bypass down into the creek with some old logs to get around the bridge. The trail looked like someone had been maintaining it. Eventually we came across a sign that had The Natures Trust on it. We thought it was pretty strange that a fairly new sign was out in the middle of no were? A little further down the trail we came across another one. Guess what none of us wrote down the name or took a picture. We continued on to see where the trail ended. We got to the end of the trail and found that it came out in Terraces White Bottom area. We finished off our day with not to much more excitement except for someone getting up close and personal with the ground. All in all we had a great day. When I got home I tried to remember what the name on the sign was, amazing how many thing come up when you just search Nature. I asked everybody on the ride and no one could remember. I continued trying to remember and even sent an to my contact in forestry asking if they knew anyone that owned property in the area with no success. After a few days of trying to remember what the sign said Robin finally remembered. I looked it up and came across their website. I ed them explaining about our club and that we were not out to destroy but maintain and keep our trails going for the future to enjoy. I also asked for permission to ride the trail on their property and possibly maintain the trail as well. They responded back with a very positive stating they would like to work with us and create a stewardship Between the Society and there selves but he would like to talk to me before proceeding and to give him a call. I gave them a call and had a great conversation with them in a positive way. They were looking forward to creating a stewardship with us but before they could proceed they would have to get approval from other areas of the Natures Trust before final paperwork. We proceeded to fire s back and forth over the next few months with no issues. Finally we received the we had been waiting for the approved stewardship between The Natures Trust and Terrace ATV & SxS Society. So its official we have 2-5km of trail we can ride with permission. This may not seem like a big deal to most people but it was huge to us. During this time I had been in contact with ATVBC several times having them look over things and asking for advice to make sure I was not going to do something that would hurt the club or the ATV community. As well I had contacted my contact in forestry during the process letting him know what was happening and also making sure I was doing nothing to hurt the club or ATV community. During this process I asked if we could start a trail system back in this area and connect up to The Natures Trust trail. He asked me to provide him with some GPS tracks and he would look into it. Great news so one night after work I loaded up the ATV and grabbed the GPS and out I went. I got a GPS track of the trail that The Natures Trust trail was on for some reason was not tracked in my GPS since the batterys had died. I walk the last 60 feet to the creek crossing as I went in on the White Bottom side as it was the shortest route and I was alone and felt it was better to be safe than sorry. Once I got back I compiled all the routes and submitted them to my contact in forestry. We flipped s back and forth with the final outcome of a nice trail system that is now in the works for approval of roughly about 30-50km in total including forestry roads. With the only setback and extra scouting we have to do is some of the access to the trails runs on current active logging roads and need to find a way to join the existing trails. Also our forestry contact wants to come out and do explorations with us to create a loop so we can join the ends of the trails and create a full loop in the tail. And look at some areas of the trails that are going to need some work for bridges and see what kind of plan we can come up with between us. We now have a base to expand on so as we continue to find trails in the Thunderbird White Bottom area we can add them to the existing trail and create a huge network of trails. So not too bad for a newly formed club that was just doing an exploration run that went from no trails to a stewardship for 2-5km of trail then roughly 30-50km of trail that is in the approval process. During the whole process we have had great support from The Natures Trust, Forestry, and ATVBC. Small steps turn into big accomplishments. By: Brian Deacon, President Terrace ATV & SxS Society
